The Buddha Speaks the Dharma Seal Sutra for the Dragon King of the Sea

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Yijing of the Great Tang Dynasty under Imperial Decree

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavan (World Honored One) was in the palace of the Dragon King of the Sea, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty bhikshus (monks), and also with many Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas).

At that time, the Sāgara (Ocean) Dragon King rose from his seat, stepped forward, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and said, 'World Honored One! Is there a Dharma that, if practiced even a little, can bring much merit?'

The Buddha told the Dragon King of the Sea, 'There are four supreme Dharmas. If someone upholds, recites, and understands their meaning, even with little effort, they will gain much merit, no different from the merit of reciting the eighty-four thousand Dharma teachings. What are the four? They are reciting that all conditioned things are impermanent, all is suffering, all dharmas are without self, and Nirvana is bliss. Dragon King, you should know! These are the four supreme Dharmas. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, with their inexhaustible wisdom of the Dharma, quickly realize non-origination and swiftly attain perfect tranquility. Therefore, you should always recite them.'

At that time, when the World Honored One spoke this Dharma Seal Sutra of four lines, those Shravakas (Arhats), great Bodhisattva assemblies, as well as the eight classes of gods and dragons, Asuras (demi-gods), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), and others, hearing what the Buddha said, were all greatly pleased, believed, accepted, and practiced it.
