如是我聞:

【English Translation】 English version 'The Great Vaipulya Sutra of the Tathāgatagarbha'

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) Mountain in Rājagṛha (Royal City), in the Jewel Moon Lecture Hall, a sandalwood double-storied pavilion. Ten years after attaining Buddhahood, he was with a great assembly of bhikṣus, a hundred thousand in number, and sixty Ganges sands worth of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, all of whom had achieved great vigor, had already made offerings to hundreds of thousands of millions of nayutas of Buddhas, and were all capable of turning the irreversible Dharma wheel. If any sentient beings hear their names, they will ultimately not regress from the unsurpassed path. 婆、阿修羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩睺羅伽俱,悉皆來集尊重供養。

爾時世尊于栴檀重閣,正坐三昧而現神變,有千葉蓮華大如車輪,其數無量,色香具足而未開敷,一切花內皆有化佛,上升虛空彌覆世界猶如寶帳,一一蓮花放無量光,一切蓮花同時舒榮。佛神力故,須臾之間皆悉萎變,其諸花內一切化佛結加趺坐,各放無數百千光明,於時此剎莊嚴殊特,一切大眾歡喜踴躍,怪未曾有咸有疑念:「今何因緣,無數妙花忽然毀變?萎黑臭穢甚可惡饜。」

爾時世尊,知諸菩薩大眾所疑,告金剛慧:「善男子!于佛法中諸有所疑,恣汝所問。」

時金剛慧菩薩知諸大眾咸有疑念,而白佛言:「世尊!以何因緣,無數蓮花中皆有化佛,上升虛空彌覆世界,須臾之間皆悉萎變?一切化佛各放無數百千光明,眾會悉見合掌恭敬。」

爾時金剛慧菩薩,以偈頌曰:

「我昔未曾睹,  神變若今日,  見佛百千億,  坐彼蓮花藏,  各放無數光,  彌覆一切剎。  離垢諸導師,  莊嚴諸世界,  蓮花忽萎變,  莫不生惡饜。  今以何因緣,  而現此神化?  我睹恒沙佛,  及無量神變,  未曾見如今,  愿為分別說。」

爾時世尊,告金剛慧及諸菩薩言:「善男

這時,世尊知道各位菩薩大眾心中的疑惑,告訴金剛慧菩薩(菩薩名)說:『善男子!對於佛法中的任何疑問,都可以隨意提問。』

當時,金剛慧菩薩知道各位大眾心中都有疑惑,於是對佛說:『世尊!因為什麼因緣,無數的蓮花中都有化身佛,上升到虛空中覆蓋整個世界,在極短的時間內全部都枯萎凋謝?所有的化身佛各自放出無數百千的光明,大眾都親眼看見,併合掌恭敬。』

當時金剛慧菩薩,用偈頌說道: 『我過去從未曾見到,像今天這樣的神通變化, 看見百千億的佛,坐在那蓮花寶藏之中, 各自放出無數的光芒,覆蓋一切的佛剎。 遠離塵垢的諸位導師,莊嚴著各個世界, 蓮花忽然枯萎凋謝,沒有不感到厭惡的。 現在是因為什麼因緣,而顯現這種神通變化? 我曾見過恒河沙數般的佛,以及無量的神通變化, 卻從未見過像今天這樣的,希望您能為我們分別解說。』

這時世尊,告訴金剛慧菩薩以及各位菩薩們說:『善男子!』

【English Translation】 English version: The Devas (婆), Asuras (阿修羅), Garudas (迦樓羅), Kinnaras (緊那羅), Mahoragas (摩睺羅伽), all gathered to respect and make offerings.

At that time, the World-Honored One, in the sandalwood-constructed pavilion, sat upright in Samadhi and manifested divine transformations. There were countless thousand-petaled lotuses, as large as chariot wheels, perfect in color and fragrance, but not yet in full bloom. Within each flower was a manifested Buddha, ascending into the sky, covering the world like a precious canopy. Each lotus emitted immeasurable light, and all the lotuses bloomed simultaneously. Due to the Buddha's divine power, in an instant, they all withered and decayed. All the manifested Buddhas within the flowers sat in full lotus posture, each emitting countless hundreds of thousands of lights. At that time, this Buddha-land was extraordinarily adorned, and all the assembly rejoiced and leaped with joy, marveling at this unprecedented event, and all had doubts: 'What is the cause today that countless wonderful flowers suddenly decay and wither? Withered, black, and emitting a foul odor, they are truly repulsive.'

At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing the doubts of the Bodhisattva assembly, said to Vajra Wisdom (金剛慧) Bodhisattva: 'Good man! If you have any doubts about the Buddha-dharma, feel free to ask.'

Then, Vajra Wisdom Bodhisattva, knowing that all the assembly had doubts, said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! What is the cause that countless lotuses each contain a manifested Buddha, ascending into the sky and covering the world, and in an instant, they all wither and decay? All the manifested Buddhas each emit countless hundreds of thousands of lights, which the assembly has seen with their own eyes, and they join their palms in reverence.'

At that time, Vajra Wisdom Bodhisattva, spoke in verse: 'I have never seen before, a divine transformation like today, Seeing hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddhas, sitting in those lotus treasuries, Each emitting countless lights, covering all Buddha-lands. The undefiled guides, adorning all the worlds, The lotuses suddenly wither and decay, and none do not feel revulsion. Now, what is the cause, that this divine transformation is manifested? I have seen Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and immeasurable divine transformations, But I have never seen one like today, I hope you will explain it for us.'

At that time, the World-Honored One, said to Vajra Wisdom and all the Bodhisattvas: 'Good men!'


子!有大方等經名如來藏,將欲演說故現斯瑞,汝等諦聽,善思念之。」咸言:「善哉!愿樂欲聞。」

佛言:「善男子!如佛所化無數蓮花忽然萎變,無量化佛在蓮花內,相好莊嚴結加趺坐,放大光明,眾睹希有靡不恭敬。如是善男子!我以佛眼觀一切眾生,貪慾恚癡諸煩惱中,有如來智、如來眼、如來身,結加趺坐儼然不動。善男子!一切眾生雖在諸趣,煩惱身中有如來藏,常無染污、德相備足,如我無異。又善男子!譬如天眼之人觀未敷花,見諸花內有如來身結加趺坐,除去萎花便得顯現。如是善男子!佛見眾生如來藏已,欲令開敷為說經法,除滅煩惱顯現佛性。善男子!諸佛法爾,若佛出世若不出世,一切眾生如來之藏常住不變,但彼眾生煩惱覆故。如來出世廣為說法,除滅塵勞凈一切智。善男子!若有菩薩信樂此法,專心修學便得解脫成等正覺,普為世間施作佛事。」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「譬如萎變花,  其花未開敷,  天眼者觀見,  如來身無染。  除去萎花已,  見無礙導師,  為斷煩惱故,  最勝出世間。  佛觀眾生類,  悉有如來藏,  無量煩惱覆,  猶如穢花纏。  我為諸眾生,  除滅煩惱故,  普為說正法,  令速成佛道。  我已佛眼見

佛說:『善男子!比如佛所化現的無數蓮花忽然凋謝,無數化身佛在蓮花裡面,相貌莊嚴,結跏趺坐,放出大光明,大家看到這種稀有的景象,沒有不恭敬的。像這樣,善男子!我用佛眼觀察一切眾生,在貪慾、嗔恚、愚癡等各種煩惱中,有如來的智慧、如來的眼睛、如來的身體,結跏趺坐,端然不動。善男子!一切眾生雖然在各種境界中,他們的煩惱身中都有如來藏,常時沒有染污,具足各種德相,和我沒有差別。又,善男子!比如有天眼的人觀察未開放的花,看見花裡面有如來身結跏趺坐,除去凋謝的花,如來身就顯現出來。像這樣,善男子!佛看見眾生的如來藏之後,想要讓它開放,所以為他們宣說經法,除去煩惱,顯現佛性。善男子!諸佛都是這樣,無論是佛出世還是不出世,一切眾生的如來藏常住不變,只是因為眾生的煩惱覆蓋著它。如來出世,廣泛地為眾生說法,除去塵勞,清凈一切智慧。善男子!如果有菩薩信樂這種法,專心修學,就能得到解脫,成就等正覺,普遍地為世間施作佛事。』

這時,世尊用偈頌說:

『比如凋謝的花,那花還沒有開放,有天眼的人看見,如來的身體沒有染污。除去凋謝的花以後,看見沒有障礙的導師,爲了斷除煩惱的緣故,最殊勝的佛出世間。佛觀察眾生,全部都有如來藏,無量的煩惱覆蓋著,好像被污穢的花纏繞。我爲了這些眾生,除去煩惱的緣故,普遍地為他們說正法,讓他們迅速成就佛道。我已經用佛眼看見』

【English Translation】 English version: 『Sons! There is a Great Vaipulya Sutra named the Tathagatagarbha (如來藏 - the Womb of the Tathagata), and these auspicious signs appear because it is about to be expounded. Listen attentively and contemplate it well.』 They all said, 『Excellent! We are eager to hear.』

The Buddha said, 『Good sons! It is like countless lotus flowers manifested by the Buddha suddenly withering and changing. Innumerable manifested Buddhas are within the lotus flowers, adorned with excellent marks and features, sitting in the lotus posture, emitting great light. All who see this rare sight are filled with reverence. Likewise, good sons! With my Buddha-eye, I observe all sentient beings, and within the various afflictions of greed, hatred, and delusion, there is the Tathagata's wisdom, the Tathagata's eye, and the Tathagata's body, sitting in the lotus posture, perfectly still. Good sons! Although all sentient beings are in various realms of existence, within their afflicted bodies is the Tathagatagarbha (如來藏 - the Womb of the Tathagata), always unpolluted, complete with virtuous qualities, no different from myself. Furthermore, good sons! It is like a person with divine vision observing an unopened flower and seeing within the flower the Tathagata's body sitting in the lotus posture. Removing the withered flower, it becomes manifest. Likewise, good sons! The Buddha, having seen the Tathagatagarbha (如來藏 - the Womb of the Tathagata) in sentient beings, desires to cause it to bloom, and so expounds the Dharma, eradicating afflictions and revealing the Buddha-nature. Good sons! Such is the Dharma-nature of all Buddhas. Whether a Buddha appears in the world or not, the Tathagatagarbha (如來藏 - the Womb of the Tathagata) of all sentient beings is constant and unchanging, but it is covered by the afflictions of those beings. When a Tathagata appears in the world, he extensively expounds the Dharma, eradicating defilements and purifying all wisdom. Good sons! If there are Bodhisattvas who believe in and delight in this Dharma, and diligently cultivate it with focused mind, they will attain liberation, achieve perfect enlightenment, and universally perform Buddha-deeds for the world.』

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse:

『Like a withered and changed flower, that flower has not yet bloomed, one with divine vision sees, the Tathagata's body is without defilement. Having removed the withered flower, one sees the unobstructed guide, for the sake of cutting off afflictions, the most supreme one appears in the world. The Buddha observes sentient beings, all have the Tathagatagarbha (如來藏 - the Womb of the Tathagata), covered by immeasurable afflictions, like being entangled by a defiled flower. For the sake of these sentient beings, I eradicate afflictions, universally expounding the true Dharma for them, enabling them to quickly achieve the Buddha-path. I have already seen with my Buddha-eye』


,  一切眾生身,  佛藏安隱住,  說法令開現。

「複次善男子!譬如淳蜜在巖樹中,無數群蜂圍繞守護。時有一人巧智方便,先除彼蜂乃取其蜜,隨意食用惠及遠近。如是善男子!一切眾生有如來藏,如彼淳蜜在於巖樹,為諸煩惱之所覆蔽,亦如彼蜜群蜂守護。我以佛眼如實觀之,以善方便隨應說法,滅除煩惱開佛知見,普為世間施作佛事。」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「譬如巖樹蜜,  無量蜂圍繞,  巧方便取者,  先除彼群蜂。  眾生如來藏,  猶如巖樹蜜,  結使塵勞纏,  如群蜂守護。  我為諸眾生,  方便說正法,  滅除煩惱蜂,  開發如來藏。  具足無礙辯,  演說甘露法,  普令成正覺,  大悲濟群生。

「複次善男子!譬如粳糧未離皮糩,貧愚輕賤謂為可棄,除蕩既精常為御用。如是善男子!我以佛眼觀諸眾生,煩惱糠糩覆蔽如來無量知見,故以方便如應說法,令除煩惱凈一切智,于諸世間為最正覺。」

爾時世尊,以偈頌曰:

「譬一切粳糧,  皮糩未除蕩,  貧者猶賤之,  謂為可棄物。  外雖似無用,  內實不毀壞,  除去皮糩已,  乃為王者膳。  我見眾生類,  煩惱隱佛藏,  為說除滅法,

『再者,善男子!譬如稻米還沒有脫離稻殼,貧窮愚昧的人輕視賤看,認為可以丟棄,經過舂搗精細后,常常被帝王所御用。像這樣,善男子!我用佛的眼睛觀察眾生,他們的煩惱糠秕覆蓋遮蔽瞭如來無量的知見,所以用方便的方法,隨應他們的根器而說法,使他們除去煩惱,清凈一切智慧,在世間成為最圓滿的覺悟者。』

這時,世尊用偈頌說道:

『譬如一切稻米,稻殼還沒有去除乾淨,貧窮的人還賤視它,認為是可以丟棄的東西。 外表看起來好像沒有用處,但內在實際上沒有損壞,除去稻殼以後,就成為帝王的膳食。 我看見眾生,煩惱遮蔽了佛的智慧寶藏,為他們宣說去除煩惱的方法,』

【English Translation】 English version In the bodies of all sentient beings, The Buddha's treasury securely dwells, expounding the Dharma to cause it to open and appear.

'Furthermore, good son! It is like pure honey in a rock tree, surrounded and guarded by countless bees. At that time, there is a person with skillful wisdom and expedient means, who first removes those bees and then takes the honey, freely consuming it and benefiting those far and near. Likewise, good son! All sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha (the womb of the Tathagata, the inherent Buddha-nature), like that pure honey in a rock tree, covered and obscured by various afflictions, also like that honey guarded by swarms of bees. I, with the Buddha's eye, truly observe this, and with skillful means, according to their needs, expound the Dharma, extinguishing their afflictions, opening their Buddha-knowledge and vision, universally performing Buddha-deeds for the world.'

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse, saying:

'Like honey in a rock tree, surrounded by countless bees, One who skillfully takes it, first removes those swarms of bees. The sentient beings' Tathagatagarbha (the womb of the Tathagata, the inherent Buddha-nature), is like honey in a rock tree, Bound by fetters and defilements, like swarms of bees guarding it. For the sake of all sentient beings, I expediently speak the true Dharma, Extinguishing the bees of affliction, developing the Tathagatagarbha (the womb of the Tathagata, the inherent Buddha-nature). Possessing unobstructed eloquence, expounding the nectar-like Dharma, Universally enabling them to attain perfect enlightenment, with great compassion saving all beings.

'Furthermore, good son! It is like unhusked rice, with the bran not yet removed, despised by the poor and foolish, considered discardable. Once cleaned and refined, it is always used for the royal meal. Likewise, good son! I, with the Buddha's eye, observe all sentient beings, their afflictions and husks covering and obscuring the Tathagata's immeasurable knowledge and vision, therefore with expedient means, according to their needs, I expound the Dharma, causing them to remove afflictions, purify all wisdom, and in the world become the most perfectly enlightened ones.'

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse, saying:

'Like all rice, with the bran not yet removed, The poor still despise it, considering it a discardable thing. Though outwardly it seems useless, inwardly it is not destroyed, Once the bran is removed, it becomes the king's meal. I see sentient beings, their afflictions concealing the Buddha's treasury, For them, I speak the Dharma of removing and extinguishing them,'


令得一切智。  如我如來性,  眾生亦復然,  開化令清凈,  速成無上道。

「複次善男子!譬如真金墮不凈處,隱沒不現經歷年載,真金不壞而莫能知。有天眼者語眾人言:『此不凈中有真金寶,汝等出之隨意受用。』如是善男子!不凈處者無量煩惱是,真金寶者如來藏是,有天眼者謂如來是。是故如來廣為說法,令諸眾生除滅煩惱,悉成正覺施作佛事。」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「如金在不凈,  隱沒莫能見,  天眼者乃見,  即以告眾人: 『汝等若出之,  洗滌令清凈,  隨意而受用,  親屬悉蒙慶。』  善逝眼如是,  觀諸眾生類,  煩惱淤泥中,  如來性不壞。  隨應而說法,  令辦一切事,  佛性煩惱覆,  速除令清凈。

「複次善男子!譬如貧家有珍寶藏,寶不能言:『我在於此。』既不自知又無語者,不能開發此珍寶藏,一切眾生亦復如是。如來知見力無所畏,大法寶藏在其身內,不聞不知耽惑五欲,輪轉生死受苦無量。是故諸佛出興於世,為開身內如來法藏,彼即信受凈一切智,普為眾生開如來藏,無礙辯才為大施主。如是善男子!我以佛眼觀諸眾生有如來藏,故為諸菩薩而說此法。」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「譬如貧

『如同黃金在不凈之處,被掩蓋埋沒,沒有人能看見, 有天眼的人才能看見,並且告訴大家: 『你們如果把它取出來,洗滌使它清凈, 就可以隨意享用,親屬都能得到喜慶。』 善逝(Sugata,佛的稱號之一)的眼睛也是這樣,觀察一切眾生, 在煩惱的淤泥中,如來佛性不會損壞。 隨著眾生的根器而說法,使他們辦成一切事情, 佛性被煩惱覆蓋,迅速去除使它清凈。

『再者,善男子!譬如貧窮人家有珍寶的寶藏,寶藏自己不能說話:『我在這裡。』 既不自己知道,又沒有人告訴他們,不能開發這個珍寶的寶藏,一切眾生也是這樣。如來具有知見的力量,無所畏懼,大法的寶藏就在他們自身之內,卻不聽聞不知道,沉迷迷惑於五欲之中,在生死輪迴中遭受無量的痛苦。所以諸佛出現於世間,爲了開啟眾生身內的如來法藏,他們就信受清凈一切智慧,普遍為眾生開啟如來藏,以無礙的辯才作為大施主。像這樣,善男子!我以佛眼觀察一切眾生具有如來藏,所以為諸位菩薩宣說這個法。』

這時,世尊用偈頌說道: 『譬如貧窮

【English Translation】 English version To enable (them) to attain all wisdom. Like my Tathagata-nature (Tathagata, one of the titles of the Buddha), all sentient beings are also like that, Enlighten and transform them to become pure, quickly accomplishing the unsurpassed path.

『Furthermore, good man! It is like genuine gold falling into an unclean place, hidden and not appearing for years. The genuine gold is not destroyed, but no one knows it. One with divine eyes tells the crowd: 『In this unclean place, there is genuine gold treasure. You should take it out and use it as you wish.』 Just like that, good man! The unclean place refers to limitless afflictions, the genuine gold treasure refers to the Tathagatagarbha (the Buddha-nature inherent in all beings), and the one with divine eyes refers to the Tathagata. Therefore, the Tathagata extensively preaches the Dharma, enabling all sentient beings to eliminate afflictions, all attain perfect enlightenment, and perform the deeds of the Buddha.』

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse, saying:

『Like gold in an unclean place, hidden and not seen, Only one with divine eyes can see it, and immediately tells everyone: 『If you take it out, wash it and make it pure, You can use it as you wish, and your relatives will all receive blessings.』 The eyes of the Sugata (one of the titles of the Buddha) are like this, observing all sentient beings, In the mud of afflictions, the Tathagata-nature is not destroyed. Preaching the Dharma according to their capacity, enabling them to accomplish all things, The Buddha-nature is covered by afflictions, quickly remove them and make it pure.

『Furthermore, good man! It is like a poor family having a treasure hoard, but the treasure cannot say: 『I am here.』 Neither knowing it themselves nor having anyone to tell them, they cannot uncover this treasure hoard. All sentient beings are also like this. The Tathagata has the power of knowledge and vision, and is without fear. The treasure of the Great Dharma is within their own bodies, but they do not hear or know it, and are deluded by the five desires, revolving in birth and death, suffering immeasurable pain. Therefore, all Buddhas appear in the world to open the Tathagata-dharma-garbha within the bodies of sentient beings. They then believe and accept, purifying all wisdom, universally opening the Tathagata-garbha for all sentient beings, and with unobstructed eloquence, act as great benefactors. Like this, good man! I observe all sentient beings with my Buddha-eye and see that they have the Tathagata-garbha, therefore I speak this Dharma for all Bodhisattvas.』

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse, saying: 『Like a poor


人家,  內有珍寶藏,  主既不知見,  寶又不能言,  窮年抱愚冥,  無有示語者,  有寶而不知,  故常致貧苦。  佛眼觀眾生,  雖流轉五道,  大寶在身內,  常在不變易。  如是觀察已,  而為眾生說,  令得智寶藏,  大富兼廣利。  若信我所說,  一切有寶藏,  信勤方便行,  疾成無上道。

「複次善男子!譬如庵羅果內實不壞,種之於地成大樹王。如是善男子!我以佛眼觀諸眾生,如來寶藏在無明殼,猶如果種在於核內。善男子!彼如來藏清涼無熱,大智慧聚妙寂泥洹,名為如來、應供、等正覺。善男子!如來如是觀眾生已,為菩薩摩訶薩凈佛智故顯現此義。」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「譬如庵羅果,  內實不毀壞,  種之於大地,  必成大樹王。  如來無漏眼,  觀一切眾生,  身內如來藏,  如花果中實。  無明覆佛藏,  汝等應信知,  三昧智具足,  一切無能壞。  是故我說法,  開彼如來藏,  疾成無上道,  如果成樹王。

「複次善男子!譬如有人持真金像,行詣他國經由險路懼遭劫奪,裹以弊物令無識者。此人于道忽便命終,於是金像棄捐曠野,行人踐蹈咸謂不凈。得天眼者見弊物中

【English Translation】 English version O people, within yourselves lies a treasure, But the master neither knows nor sees it, and the treasure cannot speak for itself, Year after year, you embrace ignorance and darkness, with no one to show or tell you. Possessing a treasure yet unaware, you constantly suffer poverty and hardship. The Buddha observes all beings with his Buddha-eye, even as they transmigrate through the five realms, The great treasure resides within them, ever-present and unchanging. Having observed thus, he speaks for the sake of all beings, Enabling them to obtain the treasure of wisdom, becoming immensely wealthy and gaining vast benefits. If you believe what I say, that all beings possess a treasure, With faith, diligence, and skillful practice, you will swiftly attain the unsurpassed path.

'Furthermore, good son! It is like an amra fruit (a type of fruit) whose inner core remains intact; when planted in the ground, it grows into a great tree king. Likewise, good son! With my Buddha-eye, I observe all beings, and the Tathagatagarbha (如來藏) is covered by the husk of ignorance (avidyā), just as the seed of a fruit is enclosed within its pit. Good son! That Tathagatagarbha is cool and free from heat, a gathering of great wisdom, the wondrously tranquil nirvana (泥洹), named Tathagata (如來), Arhat (應供), Samyaksambuddha (等正覺). Good son! Having observed beings in this way, the Tathagata reveals this meaning for the sake of the Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (菩薩摩訶薩) purifying their Buddha-wisdom.'

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in verse:

'Like an amra fruit, whose inner core is not destroyed, When planted in the great earth, it will surely grow into a great tree king. The Tathagata, with his undefiled eye, observes all beings, The Tathagatagarbha within their bodies is like the fruit within the flower and fruit. Ignorance covers the Buddha-treasure; you should believe and know this, Samadhi (三昧) and wisdom are complete; nothing can destroy it. Therefore, I preach the Dharma, opening that Tathagatagarbha, Swiftly attaining the unsurpassed path, like a fruit growing into a tree king.'

'Furthermore, good son! It is like a person carrying a true golden statue, traveling to another country, passing through dangerous roads, fearing robbery, and wrapping it in tattered cloth so that no one recognizes it. This person suddenly dies on the road, and the golden statue is abandoned in the wilderness; passersby trample on it, all thinking it is unclean. One who has obtained the divine eye (divyacakṣus) sees within the pile of tattered cloth


有真金像,即為出之一切禮敬。如是善男子!我見眾生種種煩惱,長夜流轉生死無量,如來妙藏在其身內,儼然清凈如我無異。是故佛為眾生說法,斷除煩惱凈如來智,轉復化導一切世間。」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「譬人持金像,  行詣於他國,  裹以弊穢物,  棄之在曠野。  天眼者見之,  即以告眾人,  去穢現真像,  一切大歡喜。  我天眼亦然,  觀彼眾生類,  惡業煩惱纏,  生死備眾苦。  又見彼眾生,  無明塵垢中,  如來性不動,  無能毀壞者。  佛既見如是,  為諸菩薩說,  煩惱眾惡業,  覆弊最勝身。  當勤凈除斷,  顯出如來智,  天人龍鬼神,  一切所歸仰。

「複次善男子!譬如女人貧賤醜陋,眾人所惡而懷貴子,當爲聖王王四天下;此人不知經歷時節,常作下劣生賤子想。如是善男子!如來觀察一切眾生,輪轉生死受諸苦毒,其身皆有如來寶藏,如彼女人而不覺知。是故如來普為說法,言:『善男子!莫自輕鄙,汝等自身皆有佛性,若勤精進滅眾過惡,則受菩薩及世尊號,化導濟度無量眾生。』」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「譬如貧女人,  色貌甚庸陋,  而懷貴相子,  當爲轉輪王,  七寶備眾德

【English Translation】 English version: 'Having a true golden image is equivalent to offering all respects. O good man! I see beings with various afflictions, transmigrating through endless cycles of birth and death in the long night. The wonderful treasure of the Tathagata (如來, one of the titles of a Buddha, literally 'one who has thus come' or 'one who has thus gone') is within their bodies, perfectly pure and no different from me. Therefore, the Buddha teaches the Dharma (法, the teachings of the Buddha) to beings, cutting off their afflictions, purifying their minds to reveal the wisdom of the Tathagata, and further transforming and guiding all the world.' At that time, the World Honored One (世尊, another title for the Buddha) spoke in verse: 'Suppose a person carries a golden image to another country, but wraps it in tattered, filthy rags and abandons it in the wilderness. A person with divine eyes (天眼, clairvoyance) sees it and immediately tells everyone to remove the filth and reveal the true image, and everyone rejoices greatly. My divine eye is also like that, observing those beings, entangled in evil karma (業, actions driven by intention which lead to future consequences) and afflictions, enduring all kinds of suffering in the cycle of birth and death. I also see those beings, in the dust of ignorance (無明, ignorance or delusion), yet the nature of the Tathagata is unmoving, and nothing can destroy it. Since the Buddha sees this, he speaks to the Bodhisattvas (菩薩, beings who are on the path to Buddhahood), that afflictions and various evil karmas cover and conceal the most supreme body. One should diligently purify and cut them off, revealing the wisdom of the Tathagata, so that one may be revered and relied upon by gods, humans, dragons, ghosts, and spirits. 'Furthermore, good man! Suppose a woman is poor, lowly, and ugly, hated by everyone, but she is pregnant with a noble child who will become a holy king ruling the four continents; this woman does not know this and always thinks she is carrying a lowly child. Like this, good man! The Tathagata observes all beings, revolving in birth and death, enduring all kinds of suffering, and their bodies all contain the treasure of the Tathagata, just like that woman who is unaware. Therefore, the Tathagata universally teaches them, saying: 'Good men! Do not despise yourselves, you all have the Buddha-nature (佛性, the potential to become a Buddha) within you. If you diligently strive to eliminate all faults and evils, you will receive the titles of Bodhisattva and World Honored One, transforming, guiding, and saving countless beings.'" At that time, the World Honored One spoke in verse: 'Suppose a poor woman, with a very ordinary and ugly appearance, is pregnant with a child of noble appearance, who will become a Chakravartin (轉輪王, a universal monarch), possessing the seven treasures and all virtues.


,  王有四天下,  而彼不能知,  常作下劣想。  我觀諸眾生,  嬰苦亦如是,  身懷如來藏,  而不自覺知。  是故告菩薩,  慎勿自輕鄙,  汝身如來藏,  常有濟世明,  若勤修精進,  不久坐道場,  成最正覺道,  度脫無量眾。

「複次善男子!譬如鑄師鑄真金像,既鑄成已倒置於地,外雖焦黑內像不變,開摸出像金色晃曜。如是善男子!如來觀察一切眾生,佛藏在身眾相具足。如是觀已廣為顯說,彼諸眾生得息清涼,以金剛慧捶破煩惱,開凈佛身如出金像。」

爾時世尊以偈頌曰:

「譬如大冶鑄,  無量真金像,  愚者自外觀,  但見焦黑土;  鑄師量已冷,  開摸令質現,  眾穢既已除,  相好畫然顯。  我以佛眼觀,  眾生類如是,  煩惱淤泥中,  皆有如來性。  授以金剛慧,  捶破煩惱摸,  開發如來藏,  如真金顯現。  如我所觀察,  示語諸菩薩,  汝等善受持,  轉化諸群生。」

爾時世尊告金剛慧菩薩摩訶薩:「若出家若在家,善男子善女人,受持讀誦書寫供養,廣為人說如來藏經,所獲功德不可計量。金剛慧!若有菩薩為佛道故,勤行精進修習神通,入諸三昧欲殖德本,供養過恒河

這時,世尊用偈頌說道:

『譬如大冶煉廠,鑄造無量真金佛像, 愚笨的人只看外表,只見焦黑的泥土; 工匠等到冷卻後,打開模子讓本質顯現, 各種污穢都已去除,美好的相貌清晰地顯現。 我用佛眼觀察,眾生也是如此, 在煩惱的淤泥中,都具有如來之性(Rúlái zhī xìng,指成佛的潛能)。 授予他們金剛智慧,擊碎煩惱的模子, 開發如來藏,就像真金顯現一樣。 正如我所觀察到的,告訴各位菩薩, 你們要好好地接受和保持,轉化各種眾生。』

I observe all sentient beings, their suffering is also like this, Embracing the Tathagatagarbha (Rúlái zàng, referring to Buddha-nature) within themselves, yet they are unaware. Therefore, I tell the Bodhisattvas (Púsà, referring to enlightened beings), be careful not to despise yourselves, Your body contains the Tathagatagarbha, always having the light to save the world, If you diligently cultivate and strive forward, you will soon sit in the Bodhi-mandala (Dàocháng, referring to the place of enlightenment), Attain the most perfect enlightenment, and deliver countless beings.

'Furthermore, good son! It is like a caster casting a true gold statue. After it is cast, it is placed upside down on the ground. Although the outside is charred black, the statue inside remains unchanged. Opening the mold and taking out the statue, the golden light shines everywhere. Like this, good son! The Tathagata observes all sentient beings, the Buddha-womb is in their bodies, complete with all kinds of beautiful features. After observing in this way, he widely explains it to them, so that those sentient beings can obtain cessation and coolness, and use Vajra wisdom (Jīngāng zhìhuì, referring to indestructible wisdom) to break through afflictions, opening the pure Buddha-body, just like taking out a golden statue.'

At that time, the World Honored One spoke in verse:

'It is like a great foundry, casting countless true gold statues, Foolish people only look at the outside, only seeing charred black earth; The caster waits until it cools, opens the mold to reveal the essence, All kinds of impurities have been removed, and the beautiful features clearly appear. I observe with the Buddha-eye, sentient beings are also like this, In the mud of afflictions, all have the nature of the Tathagata (Rúlái zhī xìng, referring to the potential for Buddhahood). Granting them Vajra wisdom, breaking the mold of afflictions, Developing the Tathagatagarbha, just like true gold appearing. Just as I have observed, I tell you Bodhisattvas, You should well receive and uphold this, transforming all kinds of beings.'

At that time, the World Honored One told Vajra Wisdom Bodhisattva-Mahasattva (Jīngāng zhìhuì Púsà mó訶sà, referring to a Bodhisattva with great wisdom): 'Whether a monk or a layperson, good men and good women, who receive, uphold, read, recite, write, make offerings, and widely explain the Tathagatagarbha Sutra to others, the merits they obtain are immeasurable. Vajra Wisdom! If there are Bodhisattvas who, for the sake of the Buddha-path, diligently practice and strive to cultivate supernormal powers, enter into various Samadhis (Sānmèi, referring to meditative states), wishing to plant the roots of merit, and make offerings to more than the Ganges River


沙現在諸佛,造過恒河沙七寶臺閣,高十由旬、縱廣正等各一由旬,設七寶床敷以天繒,為一一佛日日造立過恒河沙七寶臺閣,以用奉獻一一如來及諸菩薩聲聞大眾。以如是事普為一切過恒河沙現在諸佛,如是次第乃至過五十恒沙眾寶臺閣,以用供養過五十恒沙現在諸佛及諸菩薩聲聞大眾,乃至無量百千萬劫。金剛慧!不如有人樂喜菩提,于如來藏經受持讀誦書寫供養乃至一譬喻者。金剛慧!此善男子,于諸佛所種諸善根福雖無量,比善男子善女人所得功德,百分不及一千分不及一,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。」爾時世尊重說偈言:

「若人求菩提,  聞持此經者,  書寫而供養,  乃至於一偈,  如來微妙藏,  須臾發隨喜,  當聽此正教,  功德無有量。  若人求菩提,  住大神通力,  欲供十方佛,  菩薩聲聞眾,  其數過恒沙,  億載不思議,  為一一諸佛,  造立妙寶臺,  臺高十由旬,  縱廣四十里,  中施七寶座,  嚴飾備眾妙,  敷以天繒褥,  隨座各殊異,  無量過恒沙,  獻佛及大眾,  悉以此奉獻,  日夜不休息,  滿百千萬劫,  所獲福如是。  慧者聞此經,  能持一譬喻,  而為人解說,  其福過於彼,  乃至於算數

【English Translation】 English version 『Vajra Wisdom! Suppose there are Buddhas who create seven-jeweled pavilions as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. Each pavilion is ten yojanas (Yojana, an ancient Indian unit of length) high and one yojana in length and width. They set up seven-jeweled beds adorned with celestial silk in each pavilion, and day after day, they create seven-jeweled pavilions as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River for each Buddha, offering them to each Tathagata (Tathagata, 'Thus Gone One') and all the Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, 'Enlightenment Being') and Śrāvakas (Śrāvaka, 'Hearer') present. They universally serve all the Buddhas, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, in this way, creating a succession of jeweled pavilions exceeding fifty times the number of the sands of the Ganges River, offering them to the present Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Śrāvakas exceeding fifty times the number of the sands of the Ganges River, for countless hundreds of thousands of kalpas (Kalpa, an aeon). Vajra Wisdom! Although the good roots and blessings that this good man plants in the presence of the Buddhas are immeasurable, they are not even one percent, not even one thousandth, of the merit gained by this good man or good woman, and cannot be compared even with calculations or parables.』 At that time, the World Honored One (Lokajyestha) spoke again in verse: 『If someone seeks Bodhi, and hears and upholds this sutra, writes and makes offerings to it, even just one verse, and for the subtle treasure of the Tathagata, even for a moment generates joy and approval, when hearing this correct teaching, the merit is immeasurable. If someone seeks Bodhi, dwells in great supernatural power, and wishes to make offerings to the Buddhas of the ten directions, as well as the Bodhisattvas and Śrāvakas, their number exceeding the sands of the Ganges River, inconceivable for billions of years, and for each Buddha, builds a wonderful jeweled pavilion, the pavilion being ten yojanas high and forty li (Li, Chinese unit of distance) in length and width, setting up seven-jeweled seats in the middle, adorned perfectly and filled with wonders, spreading celestial silk cushions, each seat being different, using immeasurable treasures exceeding the sands of the Ganges River, offering them to the Buddhas and the assembly, offering all of these without rest day and night, for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, the blessings obtained are like this. A wise person who hears this sutra, is able to uphold one parable, and explains it to others, their blessings exceed the former, even beyond calculation.』


,  譬喻所不及。  眾生之所依,  速成無上道,  菩薩諦思惟,  甚深如來藏,  知眾生悉有,  疾成無上道。」

爾時世尊,復告金剛慧菩薩言:「過去久遠無量無邊,不可思議阿僧祇劫,復過是數。爾時有佛,號常放光明王如來、應供、等正覺、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。金剛慧!何故名曰常放光明王?彼佛本行菩薩道時,降神母胎常放光明,徹照十方千佛世界微塵等剎。若有眾生見斯光者一切歡喜,煩惱悉滅色力具足,念智成就得無礙辯。若地獄、餓鬼、畜生、閻羅王、阿修羅等見光明者,皆離惡道生天人中。若諸天人見光明者,于無上道得不退轉,具五神通。若不退轉者,皆得無生法忍五十功德旋陀羅尼。金剛慧!彼光明所照國土,皆悉嚴凈如天琉璃,黃金為繩以界八道,種種寶樹花果茂盛香氣芬馨,微風吹動出微妙音,演暢三寶菩薩功德,根、力、覺、道、禪定、解脫。眾生聞者皆得法喜,信樂堅固永離惡道。金剛慧!彼十方剎一切眾生蒙光明故,晝夜六時合掌恭敬。金剛慧!彼菩薩處胎出生,乃至成佛、無餘泥洹常放光明,般泥洹后舍利塔廟亦常放光。以是因緣諸天世人,號曰常放光明王。

【English Translation】 Parables cannot reach it. It is what sentient beings rely on, quickly accomplishing the unsurpassed path, Bodhisattvas contemplate deeply, the profound Tathāgatagarbha (tathāgatagarbha, the womb of the Tathagata), Knowing that all sentient beings possess it, quickly accomplishing the unsurpassed path.'

At that time, the World Honored One further addressed Vajramati Bodhisattva (Vajramati Bodhisattva), saying: 'In the distant past, immeasurable and boundless, inconceivable asaṃkhya-kalpas (asaṃkhya-kalpa, countless eons), even beyond that number. At that time, there was a Buddha named Sadāprabhāsa-rāja-tathāgata (Sadāprabhāsa-rāja-tathāgata), worthy of offerings (arhat, Arhat), perfectly enlightened (samyak-saṃbuddha, perfectly enlightened one), complete in knowledge and conduct (vidyā-caraṇa-saṃpanna, possessing wisdom and virtue), well-gone (sugata, well-departed one), understanding the world (lokavid, knower of the world), unsurpassed one (anuttara, unsurpassed person), tamer of men (puruṣa-damya-sārathi, tamer of men), teacher of gods and humans (śāsta deva-manuṣyāṇāṃ, teacher of gods and humans), Buddha (buddha, awakened one), World Honored One (bhagavat, the Blessed One). Vajramati! Why is he called Sadāprabhāsa-rāja? Because when that Buddha was practicing the Bodhisattva path, he constantly emitted light when he descended into his mother's womb, illuminating all directions, as many lands as there are dust particles in a thousand Buddha-worlds. If any sentient beings saw this light, they would all rejoice, their afflictions would be extinguished, their bodies and strength would be complete, their mindfulness and wisdom would be accomplished, and they would attain unimpeded eloquence. If beings in hell, hungry ghosts, animals, Yamarāja (Yamarāja, the King of Hell), asuras (asura, demigods), etc., saw the light, they would all be liberated from the evil paths and be born in the heavens or among humans. If gods or humans saw the light, they would attain non-retrogression on the unsurpassed path, possessing the five supernormal powers. Those who do not regress will all attain the forbearance of non-origination of dharmas (anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti, realization of the non-arising and non-ceasing of all dharmas) and the revolving dhāraṇī (dhāraṇī, mnemonic device) with fifty merits. Vajramati! The lands illuminated by that light are all adorned and pure like heavenly lapis lazuli, with golden ropes marking the eight paths, various precious trees with abundant flowers and fruits, fragrant and sweet, with gentle breezes blowing forth subtle sounds, proclaiming the Three Jewels (triratna, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and the merits of Bodhisattvas, the roots, powers, factors of enlightenment, the path, meditation, and liberation. Sentient beings who hear these all attain Dharma joy, their faith and delight are strengthened, and they are forever liberated from the evil paths. Vajramati! All sentient beings in those ten directions, because of receiving the light, join their palms together in reverence during the six periods of day and night. Vajramati! That Bodhisattva, from the time of being in the womb, being born, until becoming a Buddha, and entering complete nirvana (parinirvāṇa, complete nirvana), constantly emitted light, and after parinirvana, his relics, stupas, and temples also constantly emit light. Because of this cause, gods and humans call him Sadāprabhāsa-rāja.'

'Vajramati! Sadāprabhāsa-rāja-tathāgata (Sadāprabhāsa-rāja-tathāgata), worthy of offerings (arhat, Arhat), perfectly enlightened (samyak-saṃbuddha, perfectly enlightened one),


初成佛時,于其法中有一菩薩名無邊光,與二十億菩薩以為眷屬。無邊光菩薩摩訶薩于彼佛所,問如來藏經,佛為演說,在於一坐經五十大劫,護念一切諸菩薩故,其音普告十佛世界微塵等百千佛剎,為諸菩薩無數因緣百千譬喻,說如來藏大乘經典。諸菩薩等聞說此經,受持讀誦如說修行,除四菩薩皆已成佛。金剛慧!汝莫異觀,彼無邊光菩薩豈異人乎?即我身是。彼四菩薩未成佛者,文殊師利、觀世音、大勢至、汝金剛慧是,金剛慧!如來藏經能大饒益,若有聞者皆成佛道。」

爾時世尊重說偈曰:

「過去無數劫,  佛號光明王,  常放大光明,  普照無量土。  無邊光菩薩,  于佛初成道,  而啟問此經,  佛即為演說。  其有遇最勝,  而聞此經者,  皆已得成佛,  唯除四菩薩:  文殊、觀世音、  大勢、金剛慧。  此四菩薩等,  皆曾聞此法,  金剛慧為彼,  第一神通子,  時號無邊光,  已曾聞此經。  我本求道時,  師子幢佛所,  亦曾受斯經,  如聞說修行,  我因此善根,  疾得成佛道。  是故諸菩薩,  應持說此經,  聞已如說行,  得佛如我今。  若持此經者,  當禮如世尊,  若得此經者,  是名佛法主

【English Translation】 English version At the time when the Buddha first attained Buddhahood, among his teachings was a Bodhisattva named Wubian Guang (Boundless Light), accompanied by twenty billion Bodhisattvas as his retinue. The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Wubian Guang, at the Buddha's location, inquired about the Tathagatagarbha Sutra. The Buddha expounded it for him, remaining in the same seat for fifty great kalpas, out of compassion for all the Bodhisattvas. His voice universally proclaimed to the ten Buddha-worlds, as numerous as dust particles, in hundreds of thousands of Buddha-lands, using countless causes and conditions and hundreds of thousands of metaphors for the Bodhisattvas, to explain the Tathagatagarbha Mahayana Sutra. The Bodhisattvas, upon hearing this sutra being expounded, embraced, recited, and practiced it as instructed, and all except for four Bodhisattvas attained Buddhahood. Vajra Wisdom (Jingang Hui)! Do not think otherwise; is that Bodhisattva Wubian Guang someone else? It is myself. The four Bodhisattvas who have not yet attained Buddhahood are Manjushri (Wenshu Shili), Avalokiteshvara (Guanshiyin), Mahasthamaprapta (Dashi Zhi), and you, Vajra Wisdom. Vajra Wisdom! The Tathagatagarbha Sutra can bring great benefit; if anyone hears it, they will all attain the path to Buddhahood.'

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke again in verse:

'In countless past kalpas, the Buddha was named Guangming Wang (King of Light), Constantly emitting great light, universally illuminating immeasurable lands. The Bodhisattva Wubian Guang, when the Buddha first attained enlightenment, Inquired about this sutra, and the Buddha expounded it. Those who encounter the most excellent and hear this sutra, Have all attained Buddhahood, except for four Bodhisattvas: Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, Mahasthamaprapta, and Vajra Wisdom. These four Bodhisattvas have all heard this Dharma, Vajra Wisdom was their foremost spiritual son, At that time named Wubian Guang, who had already heard this sutra. When I was originally seeking the Way, at the place of Buddha Shizi Chuang (Lion Banner Buddha), I also received this sutra, practicing as I heard it, Because of this good root, I quickly attained the path to Buddhahood. Therefore, all Bodhisattvas should uphold and expound this sutra, Having heard it, practice as instructed, and attain Buddhahood as I have now. Those who uphold this sutra should revere it as the World-Honored One, Those who obtain this sutra are called the masters of the Buddha's Dharma.'

爾時世尊說此經已,金剛慧及諸菩薩,四眾眷屬,天、人、乾闥婆、阿修羅等,聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

【English Translation】 English version:   Then they become protectors of the world, praised by all the Buddhas.   If anyone upholds this Sutra, that person is called a Dharma Raja (King of the Dharma),   They are the eyes of the world, and should be praised like the Lokajyestha (World Honored One).』

At that time, after the Lokajyestha (World Honored One) finished speaking this Sutra, Vajra Wisdom (Vajra Wisdom) and all the Bodhisattvas (Enlightened beings), the fourfold assembly, along with Devas (Gods), Manushyas (Humans), Gandharvas (Celestial musicians), Asuras (Demigods), and others, hearing what the Buddha had said, joyfully accepted and practiced it.
