【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Difficulty of Repaying Parents' Kindness Sutra
Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripiṭaka Master from the An息 Kingdom of the Later Han Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World-Honored One) was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindada (Jetavana-anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma) in Shravasti (Śrāvastī).
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikshus (bhikkhu): 'Parents have great benefit for their children, nourishing them with milk, raising them to grow, and constantly caring for them, so that the four elements (the four great elements: earth, water, fire, and wind) are completed. Even if a child carries his father on his right shoulder and his mother on his left shoulder for a thousand years, and even if they defecate and urinate on his back, if the child has no resentment towards his parents, this is still not enough to repay their kindness. If the parents have no faith, teach them to have faith, so they may obtain a place of peace and security; if they have no precepts, give them precepts and instruct them, so they may obtain a place of peace and security; if they have not heard the Dharma, let them hear the Dharma and instruct them, so they may obtain a place of peace and security; if they are stingy and greedy, teach them to be generous in giving, encourage them and instruct them, so they may obtain a place of peace and security; if they have no wisdom, teach them to be wise, encourage them and instruct them, so they may obtain a place of peace and security. In this way, teach them to have faith in the Tathagata (Tathāgata), the Truthful One (Satya), the Perfectly Enlightened One (Samyak-saṃbuddha), the One accomplished in knowledge and conduct (Vidyā-caraṇa-saṃpanna), the Well-Gone One (Sugata), the Knower of the World (Lokavidū), the Unsurpassed One (Anuttara-puruṣa-damya-sārathi), the Tamer of Men (Śāsta deva-manushyānām), the Teacher of Gods and Men (Śāsta deva-manushyānām), called Buddha (Buddha), the World-Honored One (Bhagavan), teach them to have faith in the Dharma and instruct them, so they may obtain a place of peace and security. The Dharma is very profound, and one can obtain the fruit in this very life; its meaning and flavor are very deep. In this way, a wise person understands and penetrates these practices, and teaches his parents to have faith in the Sangha (saṃgha). The Sangha of the Tathagata is very pure, their conduct is upright and not crooked, they are always in harmony, and they are accomplished in Dharma, precepts, samadhi, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation. The so-called Sangha—the four pairs and eight types of individuals (referring to the practitioners of the four fruits of the Śrāvakas)—this is the Sangha of the Tathagata, the most honored and noble, worthy of respect and veneration, and is the unsurpassed field of merit in the world. Such children! Should teach their parents to practice loving-kindness. Bhikshus, there are two kinds of sons: a son born of oneself and an adopted son; these are the two kinds of sons of a bhikshu. Therefore, bhikshus! You should learn to be like a son born of oneself, speaking the true flavor of the Dharma. In this way, bhikshus, you should learn.'
At that time, the bhikshus heard what the Buddha said.
