如是我聞:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

爾時,長老阿難比丘在蘭若處獨坐思惟,作如是念:「諸善男子及善女人,若能受持三歸依處,作如是言:『我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』得幾所功德?」

生是念已,長老阿難日初出時于其住處,即從坐起齊整衣裳,安詳而出,往詣佛所。到佛所已,頂禮佛足,偏袒右肩,右膝著地,合掌向佛,而作是言:「世尊!我于曏者在空閑處,如是思惟:『若善男子及善女人,能如是言:「我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。」得幾所功德?』我實未解,惟愿如來分別演說,令諸眾生得正知見。」

爾時,世尊告阿難言:「善哉,善哉!汝善男子真實智慧微妙能善思量,能問如來如斯之義。如汝思量,彼善男子及善女人若能清淨髮如是心:『我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』得幾所功德者,諦聽,諦聽!善思念之!吾當為汝分別解說。」

阿難白佛:「唯然。世尊!愿樂欲聞。」

爾時,世尊告阿難言:「此閻浮提地縱廣七千由旬,形如車葙南狹北廣,假使滿中須陀洹人,譬

爾時,世尊告阿難言:『此閻浮提(Jambudvipa)地縱廣七千由旬(Yojana),形如車葙南狹北廣,假使滿中須陀洹人(Srotapanna),譬

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Buddha on the Incomparable Merits and Virtues

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika-arama (Jetavana Anathapindika-arama) in Shravasti (Śrāvastī).

At that time, the Elder Ānanda Bhikshu, while sitting alone in a secluded place, contemplated thus: 'If good men and good women can uphold the Three Refuges, saying thus: "I take refuge in the Buddha (Buddha), I take refuge in the Dharma (Dharma), I take refuge in the Sangha (Sangha)," how much merit would they obtain?'

Having had this thought, Elder Ānanda, as the sun rose, arose from his seat in his dwelling, straightened his robes, and calmly went to the Buddha's place. Having arrived at the Buddha's place, he prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms towards the Buddha, and said thus: 'World Honored One (Bhagavan)! I was just now in a quiet place, thinking thus: "If good men and good women can say thus: 'I take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma, I take refuge in the Sangha,' how much merit would they obtain?" I truly do not understand, I only wish that the Tathagata would explain it in detail, so that all beings may attain right knowledge and understanding.'

At that time, the World Honored One told Ānanda: 'Excellent, excellent! You good man, with true and subtle wisdom, are able to contemplate well, and able to ask the Tathagata about such a meaning. As you contemplate, if those good men and good women can purely generate such a thought: "I now take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma, I take refuge in the Sangha," how much merit would they obtain? Listen attentively, listen attentively! Think well upon it! I shall explain it to you in detail.'

Ānanda said to the Buddha: 'So it is, World Honored One! I wish to hear with joy.'

At that time, the World Honored One told Ānanda: 'This Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa) land is seven thousand yojanas (Yojana) in length and breadth, shaped like a cart, narrow in the south and wide in the north, suppose it is filled with Srotapannas (Srotapanna), for example,'


如竹葦、甘蔗、稻麻。如是一切須陀洹人,其有善男子、善女人,滿一百年,持於世間一切所有娛樂之具,盡給施與,復以四事具足供養恭敬禮拜,乃至滅度之後,收其舍利起七寶塔,一一塔廟皆以香華、蘇油、燈燭,作倡伎樂,繒彩、幡蓋種種供養。于汝意云何?彼善男子、善女人得福多不?」

阿難白佛:「甚多。世尊!」

佛言:「阿難!不如是善男子、善女人,以淳凈心,作如是言:『我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』所得功德,于彼福德百分不及一,千分不及一,百千萬分不及一,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置閻浮提。假使西瞿陀尼縱廣八千由旬,其地形狀猶如半月,皆悉滿中斯陀含人,譬如竹葦、甘蔗、稻麻。若有善男子、善女人滿二百年,復以世間種種四事,供養如前,乃至滅度之後,收其舍利起七寶塔,一一寶塔,亦以華香、燈燭、伎樂、繒蓋、幢幡種種供養。于汝意云何?彼善男子、善女人得福多不?」

阿難白佛:「甚多。世尊!」

佛言:「阿難!不如是善男子、善女人以淳凈心,作如是言:『我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』所得功德,于彼福德百分不及一,千分不及一,億分不及一,百千億分不及一,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。

【English Translation】 English version: The Buddha asked: 'Like bamboo reeds, sugarcane, rice, and hemp, so dense. If all Srotapannas (須陀洹, 'stream-enterers'), if there are good men and good women, spend a hundred years giving away all the entertainment items in the world, and fully provide them with the four requisites (food, clothing, bedding, and medicine), respectfully worshiping them, and even after their passing, collect their relics to build seven-jeweled pagodas, each pagoda temple adorned with incense, flowers, ghee lamps, candles, performing music, and various offerings such as silk banners and canopies. What do you think? Would those good men and good women gain much merit?' Ananda (阿難) replied to the Buddha: 'Very much, World Honored One!' The Buddha said: 'Ananda! It is not as good as these good men and good women, with a pure heart, saying these words: 'I now take refuge in the Buddha (佛), take refuge in the Dharma (法), and take refuge in the Sangha (僧).' The merit gained is not even one percent, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred millionth of that merit, not even comparable by calculation or analogy.' At that time, the World Honored One again told Ananda: 'Let's set aside Jambudvipa (閻浮提, the world we live in). Suppose Aparagodaniya (西瞿陀尼, one of the four continents) is eight thousand yojanas (由旬, an ancient Indian unit of distance) in length and breadth, its shape like a half-moon, all filled with Sakrdagamins (斯陀含, 'once-returners'), as dense as bamboo reeds, sugarcane, rice, and hemp. If there are good men and good women who spend two hundred years, and again use various worldly four requisites, offering them as before, and even after their passing, collect their relics to build seven-jeweled pagodas, each pagoda also adorned with flowers, incense, lamps, candles, music, silk canopies, banners, and various offerings. What do you think? Would those good men and good women gain much merit?' Ananda replied to the Buddha: 'Very much, World Honored One!' The Buddha said: 'Ananda! It is not as good as these good men and good women, with a pure heart, saying these words: 'I now take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Sangha.' The merit gained is not even one percent, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred millionth, not even one hundred thousand millionth of that merit, not even comparable by calculation or analogy.'


爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置一閻浮提、一瞿陀尼。假使東弗婆提縱廣九千由旬,其地形狀猶如滿月,皆悉滿中阿那含人,譬如竹葦、甘蔗、稻麻。若有善男子、善女人滿三百年,復以四事一切樂具,供養如前,乃至滅度之後,收其舍利起七寶塔,一一寶塔,皆以華香、伎樂、幡蓋,種種供養。于意云何?彼善男子、善女人得福多不?」

阿難白佛:「甚多。世尊!」

佛言:「阿難!不如是善男子善女人,以淳凈心作如是言:『我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』所得功德,于彼福德百分不及一,千分不及一,百千分不及一,億分不及一,百億分不及一,百千億分不及一,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置一閻浮提、一瞿陀尼、一弗婆提。假使北方郁單羅越,縱廣十千由旬,其地形狀四方端直,周匝齊整,滿中阿羅漢,諸漏已盡,無復煩惱,心得自在,具正解脫,正智得解脫,其心調伏,人中大龍,所作已辦,捨棄重擔,逮得自利,不受後有,梵行已立,身心無礙,達眾生意,得六神通、具八解脫,譬如竹葦、甘蔗、稻麻。若有善男子、善女人滿四百年,復以四事供養恭敬,一切樂具給足如前,乃至滅度之後起七寶塔,一一寶塔,皆以華香、伎樂、燈燭、繒蓋、

Suppose the Eastern Purvavideha (Purvavideha, the Eastern Continent) is nine thousand yojanas (Yojana, an ancient Indian unit of distance) in breadth and length, its shape like a full moon, and all filled with Anagamins (Anagamin, the third stage of enlightenment), as dense as bamboo reeds, sugarcane, rice, and hemp. If there is a good man or good woman who, for three hundred years, provides offerings with the four requisites (food, clothing, bedding, and medicine) and all kinds of delightful things, as mentioned before, and even after their passing, collects their relics to build seven-jeweled stupas, each stupa adorned with flowers, incense, music, banners, and canopies, and various offerings. What do you think? Would those good men and good women gain much merit?' Ananda (Ananda) replied to the Buddha: 'Very much, World Honored One!' The Buddha said: 'Ananda (Ananda)! It is not comparable to those good men and good women who, with a pure heart, make this vow: 'I now take refuge in the Buddha (Buddha), take refuge in the Dharma (Dharma), and take refuge in the Sangha (Sangha).' The merit they obtain is not even one percent of the previous merit, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred thousandth, not even one millionth, not even one hundred millionth, not even one hundred trillionth, and cannot be reached even by numerical analogy.' At that time, the World Honored One further said to Ananda (Ananda): 'Let us set aside one Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the Southern Continent), one Godaniya (Godaniya, the Western Continent), and one Purvavideha (Purvavideha, the Eastern Continent). Suppose the Northern Uttarakuru (Uttarakuru, the Northern Continent) is ten thousand yojanas (Yojana, an ancient Indian unit of distance) in breadth and length, its shape square and upright, its surroundings orderly, filled with Arhats (Arhat, one who has attained enlightenment), who have exhausted all outflows, have no more afflictions, whose minds are free, possessing true liberation, attaining liberation through right knowledge, their minds tamed, great dragons among humans, having done what needed to be done, having relinquished the heavy burden, having attained self-benefit, no longer subject to future existence, their pure conduct established, their bodies and minds without obstruction, understanding the minds of all beings, having attained the six supernormal powers, possessing the eight liberations, as dense as bamboo reeds, sugarcane, rice, and hemp. If there is a good man or good woman who, for four hundred years, provides offerings with the four requisites, respectfully and completely supplying all kinds of delightful things, as mentioned before, and even after their passing, builds seven-jeweled stupas, each stupa adorned with flowers, incense, music, lamps, and silken canopies,


幢幡,種種供養。于意云何?彼善男子、善女人得福多不?」

阿難白佛:「甚多。世尊!」

佛言:「阿難!不如是善男子、善女人以淳凈心,作如是言:『我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』所得功德,於前福德百分不及一,千分不及一,百千分不及一,百千億分不及一,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置閻浮提、瞿陀尼、弗婆提、郁單羅越。假使遍四天下,滿中辟支佛獨覺,譬如竹葦、甘蔗、稻麻。若有善男子、善女人滿十千年,復以四事供養恭敬,一切樂具給足如前,乃至滅度之後,收其舍利起七寶塔,一一寶塔,皆以華香、伎樂、燈燭、繒蓋、幢幡,種種供養。于意云何?彼善男子、善女人得福多不?」

阿難白佛:「甚多。世尊!」

佛言:「阿難!不如是善男子、善女人以淳凈心,作如是言:『我今歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』所得功德,於前福德百分不及一,千分不及一,百千分不及一,百千億分不及一,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置一四天下,一日月光所照之處。設復一千世界,所謂一千日月、一千四大海水、一千須彌山王、一千閻浮提、一千瞿陀尼、一千弗婆提、一千郁單羅越、一千四天王天、一千三十

這時,世尊又告訴阿難:『暫且放下閻浮提(Yán fú tí,四大部洲之一,我們所居住的這個世界)、瞿陀尼(Qú tuó ní,四大部洲之一)、弗婆提(Fú pó tí,四大部洲之一)、郁單羅越(Yù dān luó yuè,四大部洲之一)。假使遍滿四天下,都是辟支佛(pì zhī fó,又稱獨覺佛),像竹葦、甘蔗、稻麻一樣多。如果有善男子、善女人用滿十千年的時間,又用四事供養(sì shì gòng yǎng,指飲食、衣服、臥具、醫藥)恭敬他們,一切生活所需的樂具都充分供給,像前面所說的那樣,乃至他們滅度之後,收集他們的舍利(shè lì,佛教高僧火化后的遺物)建造七寶塔,每一座寶塔,都用華香、伎樂、燈燭、繒蓋、幢幡,種種供養。你認為怎麼樣?那些善男子、善女人得到的福報多不多?』

阿難回答佛說:『非常多,世尊!』

佛說:『阿難!不如這些善男子、善女人以純凈的心,說這樣的話:『我現在歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』所得到的功德,比前面的福德,百分之一都比不上,千分之一都比不上,百千分之一都比不上,百千億分之一都比不上,乃至用算術譬喻都無法比及。』

這時,世尊又告訴阿難:『暫且放下一個四天下,一個日月光所照之處。假設有一千個世界,所謂一千個日月、一千個四大海水、一千個須彌山王(Xū mí shān wáng,佛教宇宙觀中的中心山)、一千個閻浮提、一千個瞿陀尼、一千個弗婆提、一千個郁單羅越、一千個四天王天(Sì tiān wáng tiān,佛教六慾天中的第一層天)、一千個三十

【English Translation】 English version: 'With banners and various offerings. What do you think? Would those good men and good women gain much merit?'

Ānanda (Ā nán, one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha) replied to the Buddha, 'Very much, World Honored One!'

The Buddha said, 'Ānanda! It is not comparable to the merit gained by those good men and good women who, with a pure heart, say these words: 'I now take refuge in the Buddha (guī yī fó, taking refuge in the Buddha), take refuge in the Dharma (guī yī fǎ, taking refuge in the Dharma), take refuge in the Sangha (guī yī sēng, taking refuge in the Sangha).' The merit they obtain is not even one percent of the previous merit, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred thousandth, not even one hundred trillionth, and cannot even be reached by calculation or analogy.'

At that time, the World Honored One again told Ānanda, 'Let aside Jambudvīpa (Yán fú tí, one of the four great continents, the world we live in), Godānīya (Qú tuó ní, one of the four great continents), Pūrvavideha (Fú pó tí, one of the four great continents), and Uttarakuru (Yù dān luó yuè, one of the four great continents). Suppose the four continents were filled with Pratyekabuddhas (pì zhī fó, also known as solitary Buddhas), as numerous as bamboo reeds, sugar cane, rice, and hemp. If there were good men and good women who, for ten thousand years, offered them the four requisites (sì shì gòng yǎng, referring to food, clothing, bedding, and medicine) with reverence, providing all the necessary comforts as mentioned before, and even after their passing, collected their relics (shè lì, remains of highly virtuous Buddhist monks after cremation) to build seven-jeweled pagodas, and for each pagoda, made various offerings with flowers, incense, music, lamps, candles, and silken canopies and banners. What do you think? Would those good men and good women gain much merit?'

Ānanda replied to the Buddha, 'Very much, World Honored One!'

The Buddha said, 'Ānanda! It is not comparable to the merit gained by those good men and good women who, with a pure heart, say these words: 'I now take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, take refuge in the Sangha.' The merit they obtain is not even one percent of the previous merit, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred thousandth, not even one hundred trillionth, and cannot even be reached by calculation or analogy.'

At that time, the World Honored One again told Ānanda, 'Let aside one four-continent world, the area illuminated by one sun and moon. Suppose there were one thousand worlds, that is, one thousand suns and moons, one thousand great seas, one thousand Mount Sumerus (Xū mí shān wáng, the central mountain in Buddhist cosmology), one thousand Jambudvīpas, one thousand Godānīyas, one thousand Pūrvavidehas, one thousand Uttarakurus, one thousand heavens of the Four Heavenly Kings (Sì tiān wáng tiān, the first heaven in the desire realm), one thousand thirty


三天、一千夜摩天、一千珊兜率陀天、一千化自樂天、一千他化自在天、一千梵天,不相系屬,各于千世界中得大自在。阿難!是名一小千世界。阿難!從一小千世界,一一數之滿一千已,是名中千世界。阿難!從中千世界,復一一數還滿一千,是名大千世界。阿難!如是合數總名三千大千世界。假使滿三千大千世界中諸佛如來,譬如竹葦、甘蔗、稻麻,彼等諸佛、世尊、至真、等正覺。若有善男子、善女人二萬歲中,常以一切娛樂之具,衣服、飲食、床臥、湯藥,種種奉施,乃至滅度之後,收其舍利起七寶塔,一一寶塔,皆以華香、伎樂、繒蓋、幢幡、香燭、油燈,如是供養。于意云何?彼善男子及善女人得福多不?」

阿難白佛:「甚多。世尊!」

佛告阿難:「若復有人直能供養一佛世尊,滿二萬歲,四事具足供養恭敬,乃至滅度收其舍利,起七寶塔,一一寶塔,皆以華香、伎樂、幡蓋、香油、燈燭,一切奉施其福尚多,無量無邊不可稱數,何況滿三千大千世界諸佛如來!二萬歲中常以四事供養供給,乃至滅度,收其舍利,起七寶塔,一一寶塔,各以華香、伎樂、幡蓋及香油燈,種種所須悉皆供養,實得無量無邊、不可算、不可數福德之聚。」

佛言:「阿難!猶不如是善男子、善女人以淳

【English Translation】 English version Ananda, one thousand Yama Heavens (Yama Heaven, the third heaven of the Desire Realm), one thousand Tushita Heavens (Tushita Heaven, the fourth heaven of the Desire Realm), one thousand Nirmanarati Heavens (Nirmanarati Heaven, the fifth heaven of the Desire Realm), one thousand Paranirmita-vasavartin Heavens (Paranirmita-vasavartin Heaven, the sixth heaven of the Desire Realm), and one thousand Brahma Heavens (Brahma Heaven, heavens of the Form Realm), not belonging to each other, each attaining great liberation in a thousand worlds. If there is a good man or good woman who, for twenty thousand years, constantly offers all kinds of entertainment, clothing, food, bedding, and medicine, and various other things to them, and even after the Buddhas have passed away, collects their relics and builds seven-jeweled pagodas, each pagoda adorned with flowers, incense, music, silk canopies, banners, fragrant candles, and oil lamps, making offerings in this way. What do you think? Would this good man and good woman gain much merit?' Ananda said to the Buddha, 'Very much, World Honored One!' The Buddha told Ananda, 'If someone is only able to offer to one Buddha, the World Honored One, for a full twenty thousand years, providing all four requisites (clothing, food, bedding, and medicine) with complete reverence, and even after the Buddha has passed away, collects his relics and builds seven-jeweled pagodas, each pagoda adorned with flowers, incense, music, banners, fragrant oil, and lamps, offering all these things, their merit would still be great, immeasurable, and beyond calculation. How much more so if they were to offer to all the Buddhas and Tathagatas in the entire trichiliocosm! For twenty thousand years, constantly providing the four requisites, and even after the Buddhas have passed away, collecting their relics and building seven-jeweled pagodas, each pagoda adorned with flowers, incense, music, banners, and fragrant oil lamps, offering all the necessary items, they would truly gain an immeasurable, incalculable, and countless accumulation of merit.' 「阿難!若復有人能一日一夜,受八戒齋已,如說修行,所得功德勝前福德,千倍、萬倍、百千萬倍,乃至算數譬喻所不能及。

「阿難!若能受持五戒盡其形壽,如說修行,所得功德勝前福德,百倍、千倍、萬倍、千億萬倍,非算數、譬喻所能知及。

「阿難!若復有人受沙彌戒、沙彌尼戒,復勝於前百倍、千倍、萬倍、千億萬倍,非算數、譬喻所能知及。

「阿難!若復有人能受持式叉摩那戒,又復所得功德,勝前福德百倍、千倍、百千萬倍,乃至算數、譬喻所不能及。何況受持比丘尼戒,依波羅提木叉如說修行!況復有人盡形受持大比丘戒,依波羅提木叉戒如說修行,不缺不犯無有穢濁,清凈梵行,得無量無邊功德,勝前百倍、千倍、萬倍、百千萬倍,乃至算數、譬喻所不能及。」

爾時,長老阿難聞佛說此三歸依處,乃至盡壽護大比丘波羅提木叉,功德無量,嘆未曾有,白佛言:「甚奇!世尊!是經微妙不可

【English Translation】 English version: 'With a pure mind, one says thus: 『I now take refuge in the Buddha (Buddha, the Awakened One), take refuge in the Dharma (Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha), take refuge in the Sangha (Sangha, the monastic community).』 The merit gained surpasses the previous blessings by a hundredfold, a thousandfold, a myriadfold, beyond calculation, beyond what words and analogies can comprehend.'

At that time, the World-Honored One further told Ananda (Ananda, one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha): 'If someone can complete the taking of refuge in the Buddha, complete the taking of refuge in the Dharma, complete the taking of refuge in the Sangha, and even for the duration of a finger snap can uphold the ten good deeds, and after upholding them, practice accordingly, due to this cause and condition, they will obtain immeasurable and boundless merit.'

'Ananda! If someone can, for one day and one night, uphold the eight precepts and observe the fast, and then practice as instructed, the merit gained surpasses the previous blessings by a thousandfold, a myriadfold, a hundred thousandfold, even beyond what calculation and analogy can reach.'

'Ananda! If one can uphold the five precepts for the entirety of their life, and practice as instructed, the merit gained surpasses the previous blessings by a hundredfold, a thousandfold, a myriadfold, a hundred millionfold, beyond what calculation and analogy can comprehend.'

'Ananda! If someone takes the Śrāmaṇera (Śrāmaṇera, novice monk) precepts or the Śrāmaṇerī (Śrāmaṇerī, novice nun) precepts, it surpasses the aforementioned by a hundredfold, a thousandfold, a myriadfold, a hundred millionfold, beyond what calculation and analogy can comprehend.'

'Ananda! If someone can uphold the Śikṣamāṇā (Śikṣamāṇā, a female monastic in training) precepts, the merit gained surpasses the previous blessings by a hundredfold, a thousandfold, a hundred thousandfold, even beyond what calculation and analogy can reach. How much more so for upholding the Bhikkhunī (Bhikkhunī, fully ordained female monastic) precepts, practicing according to the Prātimokṣa (Prātimokṣa, the monastic code of discipline)! How much more so for someone who upholds the great Bhikkhu (Bhikkhu, fully ordained male monastic) precepts for their entire life, practicing according to the Prātimokṣa precepts as instructed, without deficiency, without transgression, without defilement, practicing pure conduct, obtaining immeasurable and boundless merit, surpassing the previous by a hundredfold, a thousandfold, a myriadfold, a hundred millionfold, even beyond what calculation and analogy can reach!'

At that time, the elder Ananda, hearing the Buddha speak of these three refuges, and of guarding the great Bhikkhu Prātimokṣa for his entire life, with immeasurable merit, exclaimed in praise, 'It is most wondrous! World-Honored One! This sutra is subtle and inconceivable!'


思議,明甚深義,功德廣大難可校量。當何名此經?我等云何奉持?」

佛告阿難:「此經名為『希有希有經』,汝當奉持。所以者何?是經中說希有之法,所演勝法一切世間難聞,故名希有。」

佛說是經已,長老阿難,聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

【English Translation】 English version: Ananda asked: 'World Honored One, what you have spoken is inconceivable, revealing profound meaning, and its merits and virtues are vast and difficult to measure. What should this sutra be called? How should we uphold it?' The Buddha told Ananda: 'This sutra is named the 『Rare and Wonderful Sutra (Xiyou Xiyou Jing)』, you should uphold it. Why? Because this sutra speaks of rare and wonderful dharmas, and the supreme dharma it expounds is difficult for all the world to hear, therefore it is named Rare and Wonderful.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the elder Ananda, having heard what the Buddha said, joyfully accepted and practiced it.
