如是我聞:

一時,薄伽梵在室羅筏住誓多林給孤獨園,與其無量大苾芻眾,無量菩薩、天、人等俱。

爾時,尊者阿難在空閑處獨坐思惟,生如是念:「若善男子或善女人,以凈信心受三歸依,作如是言:『今我某名,歸依于佛兩足中尊、歸依於法離欲中尊、歸依于僧諸眾中尊。』如是歸依得幾許福?」

作是念已,日初出時于本住處,從座而起整理衣服,安詳而出往如來所。到已,頂禮世尊雙足,偏袒一肩,右膝著地,合掌恭敬,而白佛言:「惟我向者,在空閑處獨坐思惟,作如是念:『若善男子或善女人,以凈信心受三歸依,作如是言:「今我某名,歸依于佛兩足中尊、歸依於法離欲中尊、歸依于僧諸眾中尊。」如是歸依得幾所福?』我未能了,惟愿世尊哀愍為說,令諸眾生得正智覺。」

爾時,世尊告阿難曰:「善哉,善哉!汝真妙慧能善思惟,能善請問如來斯義。汝今諦聽!極善思惟,吾當為汝分別解說。」

阿難白佛:「唯然。世尊!愿樂欲聞。」

爾時,世尊告阿難曰:「汝今當知,此贍部洲縱廣周匝七千逾繕那,北廣

阿難對佛說:『是的,世尊!我非常樂意聽聞。』

這時,世尊告訴阿難說:『你現在應當知道,這贍部洲(Jambudvīpa)縱橫周長七千由旬(yojana),北部寬廣

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Utmost Incomparability

Translated under Imperial Order by the Tang Dynasty Tripitaka Master Xuanzang

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Śrāvastī (city in ancient India), together with a countless great assembly of Bhikshus (monks), countless Bodhisattvas, Devas (gods), humans, and others.

At that time, the Venerable Ānanda (Buddha's cousin and disciple) was sitting alone in a secluded place, contemplating and thinking thus: 'If a good man or good woman, with pure faith, takes the Three Refuges, saying thus: "I, so-and-so by name, take refuge in the Buddha, the most honored among two-legged beings; take refuge in the Dharma, the most honored among those free from desire; take refuge in the Sangha, the most honored among all assemblies." How much merit is gained by taking refuge in this way?'

Having thought thus, at sunrise, he arose from his seat in his dwelling place, arranged his robes, and walked peacefully to where the Tathagata (Buddha) was. Having arrived, he prostrated himself at the feet of the World Honored One, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms respectfully, and said to the Buddha: 'Just now, I was sitting alone in a secluded place, contemplating and thinking thus: "If a good man or good woman, with pure faith, takes the Three Refuges, saying thus: 'I, so-and-so by name, take refuge in the Buddha, the most honored among two-legged beings; take refuge in the Dharma, the most honored among those free from desire; take refuge in the Sangha, the most honored among all assemblies.' How much merit is gained by taking refuge in this way?" I do not understand this, and I hope that the World Honored One will compassionately explain it for me, so that all beings may attain true wisdom and enlightenment.'

At that time, the World Honored One said to Ānanda: 'Excellent, excellent! You truly have wonderful wisdom, being able to contemplate well and ask the Tathagata about this meaning. Now listen attentively! Think very carefully, and I will explain it to you in detail.'

Ānanda said to the Buddha: 'Yes, World Honored One! I am eager to hear.'

At that time, the World Honored One said to Ānanda: 'You should know now that this Jambudvīpa (the continent where we live) is seven thousand yojanas (ancient Indian unit of distance) in circumference, and is wide in the north.


南狹形如車箱,人面亦爾。假使于中合為一段,或甘蔗林,或蘆葦林,或竹林等,或復稻田、胡麻田等,側塞充滿無有間隙。如是假使遍贍部洲諸預流果,側塞充滿亦無間隙,如甘蔗等。如是一切預流果人,若善男子或善女人,滿一百歲,以諸世間上妙樂具、衣服、飲食、臥具、醫藥,奉施供養,恭敬禮拜。于彼一一預流果人般涅槃后,如法焚身收其遺骨,起窣堵波高廣嚴麗,皆以種種涂香、末香、薰香、花鬘,上妙幡蓋、寶幢、音樂、燈燭光明,讚歎供養。汝意云何?由是因緣,彼所生福寧為多不?」

阿難白佛:「甚多。世尊!甚多。善逝!」

佛告阿難:「若善男子或善女人,以凈信心,作如是言:『今我某名,歸依于佛兩足中尊、歸依於法離欲中尊、歸依于僧諸眾中尊。』是善男子或善女人獲福無量。阿難當知,如前所說供養福德,比此三歸所生福德,于百分中不及其一,于千分中亦不及一,于百千分、數分、算分、計分、喻分,乃至鄔波尼殺曇分亦不及一。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置此方南贍部洲。於此東方毗提訶洲,縱廣周匝八千逾繕那,形如半月,人面亦爾。假使于中合為一段,或甘蔗林,或蘆葦林,或竹林等,或復稻田、胡麻田等,側塞充滿無有間隙。如是假使遍彼東方毗

【English Translation】 English version The southern continent is narrow and shaped like a cart box, and the faces of its people are also like that. Suppose it were all gathered together into one mass, like a sugarcane field, or a reed field, or a bamboo grove, or rice paddies, sesame fields, and so on, crowded and filled without any gaps. Suppose the entire Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the continent where humans reside) were filled with Stream-Enterers (Srotapanna, those who have attained the first stage of enlightenment), crowded and filled without any gaps, like sugarcane, and so on. Suppose all these Stream-Enterers, whether good men or good women, lived for a hundred years, and were offered and provided with the world's finest pleasures, clothing, food, bedding, and medicine, and were treated with reverence and respect. After each of these Stream-Enterers attained Parinirvana (Parinirvana, complete nirvana), their bodies were cremated according to the Dharma, their relics were collected, and stupas (stupa) were erected, tall, wide, magnificent, and adorned, all with various scented pastes, powdered incense, burning incense, flower garlands, exquisite banners and canopies, jeweled parasols, music, and the light of lamps and candles, praised and venerated. Ananda replied to the Buddha (Bhagavan): 'Very great, World-Honored One (Bhagavan)! Very great, Well-Gone One (Sugata)!'

The Buddha told Ananda: 'If a good man or good woman, with pure faith, makes such a statement: 'I, so-and-so, take refuge in the Buddha, the most honored among two-legged beings; I take refuge in the Dharma, the most honored among those free from desire; I take refuge in the Sangha, the most honored among all assemblies.' This good man or good woman will obtain immeasurable merit. Ananda, you should know that the merit of offering as previously described does not compare to even one part in a hundred of the merit generated by taking these Three Refuges, not even one part in a thousand, not even one part in a hundred thousand, not even in numerical division, calculation division, reckoning division, analogy division, or even Upanishad (upanisad) division.'

At that time, the World-Honored One further told Ananda: 'Let us set aside this southern Jambudvipa. In this eastern Videha (Videha), the continent to the east, which is eight thousand yojanas (yojana, a unit of distance) in length and breadth, and shaped like a half-moon, and the faces of its people are also like that. Suppose it were all gathered together into one mass, like a sugarcane field, or a reed field, or a bamboo grove, or rice paddies, sesame fields, and so on, crowded and filled without any gaps. 爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置東方毗提訶洲。於此西方瞿陀尼洲,縱廣周匝九千逾繕那,形如日輪人面亦爾。假使于中合為一段,或甘蔗林,或蘆葦林,或竹林等,或復稻田、胡麻田等,側塞充滿無有間隙。如是假使遍彼西方瞿陀尼洲不還果人,側塞充滿亦無間隙,如甘蔗等。如是一切不還果人,若善男子或善女人,滿三百歲,以諸世間上妙樂具、衣服、飲食、

【English Translation】 English version: The Buddha said to Ananda: 'In Purva-videha (Eastern Videha Continent), Arhats of Once-Returner (Sakrdagamin) are crowded and filled without any gaps, like sugarcane and other crops. If all these Arhats of Once-Returner, a virtuous man or virtuous woman, for two hundred years, with the world's most wonderful enjoyment tools, clothes, food, bedding, medicine, offer, provide, respect, and worship them. After each of these Arhats of Once-Returner attain Parinirvana (complete Nirvana), cremate their remains according to the Dharma, collect their relics, and build tall, wide, and magnificent Stupas, using various scented pastes, powdered incense, burning incense, flower garlands, supreme banners, jeweled canopies, musical instruments, lamps, candles, and light to praise and make offerings. This virtuous man or virtuous woman will obtain even more superior merit. Ananda, you should know that the merit of offering as mentioned earlier cannot compare to even one percent of the merit generated by taking the Three Refuges, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred thousandth, a numerical fraction, a calculated fraction, a comparative fraction, or even one Upanishad fraction.' At this time, the World Honored One again told Ananda: 'Let's put aside the Eastern Purva-videha Continent for now. In this Western Apara-godaniya (Western Godaniya Continent), which is nine thousand Yojana (an ancient Indian measure of distance) in circumference, shaped like the sun, and with human faces. Suppose it is all connected as one piece, or a sugarcane forest, or a reed forest, or a bamboo forest, etc., or rice fields, sesame fields, etc., crowded and filled without gaps. Suppose the entire Western Apara-godaniya Continent is filled with Arhats of Non-Returner (Anagamin), crowded and filled without gaps, like sugarcane and other crops. 臥具、醫藥,奉施供養,恭敬禮拜。于彼一一不還果人般涅槃后,如法焚身收其遺骨,起窣堵波高廣嚴麗,皆以種種涂香、末香、薰香、華鬘,上妙幡蓋、寶幢、音樂、燈燭光明,讚歎供養。汝意云何?由是因緣,彼所生福寧為多不?」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「且置西方瞿陀尼洲。於此北方大俱盧洲,縱廣周匝十千逾繕那,地形四方,人面亦爾。假使于中合為一段,或甘蔗林,或蘆葦林,或竹林等,或復稻田、胡麻田等,側塞充滿無有間隙。如是假使遍彼北方大俱盧洲阿羅漢人,諸漏已盡無復煩惱,心得自在具正解脫,正智解脫,其心調順如大龍象,所作已辦舍諸重擔,逮得己利不受後有,梵行已成,身心無礙,知眾生性,具六神通、證八解脫,側塞充滿亦無間隙,如甘蔗等。如是一切阿羅漢人,若善男子或善女人,滿四百歲

【English Translation】 English version: Bedding and medicine are offered as alms and offerings, with respectful prostrations. After each Anagamin (one who does not return, a stage in Buddhist practice where one will not be reborn into the desire realm) enters Parinirvana (the final nirvana, complete liberation), their body is cremated according to the Dharma, and their relics are collected. Stupas (Buddhist monuments) are erected, tall, wide, adorned, and beautiful, all with various scented pastes, powdered incense, burning incense, flower garlands, supreme banners and canopies, jeweled parasols, music, and the light of lamps and candles, praising and making offerings. What do you think? Due to this cause, is the merit they generate not great?'

Ananda (one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples, known for his memory) replied to the Buddha, 'It is very great, World-Honored One (Bhagavan, a title for the Buddha)! Very great, Well-Gone One (Sugata, an epithet of the Tathagata)!'

The Buddha told Ananda, 'If a good man or good woman, with pure faith, makes such a statement: 'Now I, so-and-so by name, take refuge in the Buddha, the most honored among two-legged beings; take refuge in the Dharma, the most honored among those free from desire; take refuge in the Sangha, the most honored among all assemblies.' This good man or good woman obtains even greater merit. Ananda, you should know that the merit of offerings described earlier, compared to the merit generated by these Three Refuges (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), is not even one percent, not even one-thousandth, not even one hundred-thousandth, not even a numerical fraction, a calculated fraction, a reckoned fraction, a comparative fraction, or even an Upaniṣad-aṃśa (the smallest unit of measurement) fraction.'

At that time, the World-Honored One further told Ananda, 'Let us set aside the western Godānīya Continent (one of the four continents). In this northern Uttarakuru Continent (one of the four continents), which is ten thousand Yojanas (an ancient Indian unit of distance) in length and breadth, with a square shape and people with faces of the same shape, suppose it were all connected together, either as sugarcane forests, or reed forests, or bamboo forests, etc., or as rice fields, sesame fields, etc., densely packed without any gaps. Suppose that the entire northern Uttarakuru Continent were filled with Arhats (one who is worthy, a stage in Buddhist practice where one has extinguished all defilements), who have exhausted all outflows, are without afflictions, have attained freedom of mind, possess right liberation, liberation through right knowledge, their minds are tamed like great dragon elephants, they have done what needed to be done, have relinquished all burdens, have attained their own benefit, are no longer subject to future existence, have accomplished the pure conduct, their bodies and minds are without obstruction, they know the nature of beings, possess the six supernormal powers, have realized the eight liberations, densely packed without any gaps, like sugarcane, etc. All these Arhats, if a good man or good woman, for four hundred years

佛告阿難:「若善男子或善女人,以凈信心,作如是言:『今我某名,歸依于佛兩足中尊,歸依於法離欲中尊,歸依于僧諸眾中尊。』是善男子或善女人,獲福轉勝。阿難當知,如前所說供養福德,比此三歸所生福德,復于百分不及其一,于千分中亦不及一,于百千分、數分、算分、計分、喻分,乃至鄔波尼殺曇分亦不及一。」

After each Arhat (A luo han, a perfected being who has extinguished all defilements and attained liberation) attains Parinirvana (Ban nie pan, complete cessation), cremating their body according to the Dharma, collecting their relics, and erecting stupas (Su du po, Buddhist monuments) that are tall, vast, adorned, and beautiful, using various scented pastes, powdered incense, burning incense, flower garlands, supreme banners, jeweled parasols, music, lamps, and bright lights to praise and make offerings. What do you think? Because of this cause, would the merit they generate be great or not?' Ananda (A nan, one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples, known for his strong memory) replied to the Buddha, 'Very great, World Honored One (Shi zun, a title of the Buddha)! This virtuous man or virtuous woman will obtain even greater merit. Ananda, you should know that the merit of offerings as previously described cannot compare to the merit generated by taking the Three Refuges, not even one percent, not even one thousandth, not even one hundred thousandth, nor a numerical fraction, a calculational fraction, a comparative fraction, or even an Upanishad (Wu bo ni sha tan, ancient Indian philosophical texts) fraction.' At that time, the World Honored One further told Ananda, 'Let aside the great northern Kuru Continent (Da ju lu zhou, one of the four continents). Suppose all the mountains and oceans within them were removed and combined into one continuous stretch, like sugarcane fields, reed fields, or bamboo forests, or like rice paddies and sesame fields, densely packed without any gaps. Likewise, suppose that throughout this entire circumambulatory area, all the Pratyekabuddhas (Du jue ren, self-enlightened beings who attain enlightenment without a teacher), having achieved all the merits surpassing those of Arhats, were densely packed without any gaps, like sugarcane. If a virtuous man or virtuous woman, for ten thousand years, were to offer, give, venerate, and pay homage to all these Pratyekabuddhas with all the most exquisite worldly pleasures, including clothing, food, bedding, and medicine. After each of these Pratyekabuddhas attains Parinirvana,

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「若善男子或善女人,歸依佛竟、歸依法竟、歸依僧竟,乃至復能一彈指頃受持十善,由是因緣獲福轉勝。阿難當知,如前所說惟受三歸所生福德,比此兼修一彈指頃十善福德,復于百分不及其一,于千分中亦不及一,于百千分、數分、算分、計分、喻分,乃至鄔波尼殺曇分亦不及一。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「若善男子或善女人,歸依佛竟、歸依法竟、歸依僧竟,乃至復能一日一夜受持八戒,獲福轉勝。阿難當知,如前所說,一彈指頃十善福德,比一日一夜八戒福德,復于百分不及其一,于千分中亦不及一,于百千分、數分、算分、計分、喻分,乃至鄔波尼殺曇分亦不及一。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「若善男子或善女人,歸依佛竟、歸依法竟、歸依僧竟,乃至復能盡其形壽受持五戒,獲福轉勝。阿難當知,如前所說,一日一夜八戒福德,比盡形受五戒福德,復于百分不及其一,于千分中亦不及一,于百千分、數分、算分、計分、喻分,乃至鄔波尼殺曇分亦不及一。」

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「若善男子或善女人,歸依佛竟、歸

It is not even one-thousandth, not even one hundred-thousandth, not even a numerical fraction, a calculative fraction, a countable fraction, a comparative fraction, or even an Upaniṣad-kalā fraction.'

At that time, the World Honored One further told Ānanda: 'If a good man or good woman, having completed taking refuge in the Buddha, having completed taking refuge in the Dharma, having completed taking refuge in the Sangha, and even being able to uphold the Eight Precepts (Aṣṭāṅga-śīla) for one day and one night, the merit obtained is even more supreme. Ānanda, you should know that the merit of the Ten Virtuous Actions for the duration of a finger snap, as previously mentioned, is not even one percent of the merit of upholding the Eight Precepts for one day and one night. It is not even one-thousandth, not even one hundred-thousandth, not even a numerical fraction, a calculative fraction, a countable fraction, a comparative fraction, or even an Upaniṣad-kalā fraction.'

爾時,世尊復告阿難:「若復有能盡形受持苾芻尼戒,獲福轉勝。阿難當知,如前福德比此福德,復于百分不及其一,于千分中亦不及一,于百千分、數分、算分、計分、喻分,乃至鄔波尼殺曇分亦不及一。」

無量無邊。歡喜踴躍嘆未曾有,而白佛言:「甚奇!世尊!如是法門,最勝希有不可思議,明甚深義,功德廣大難可挍量。其名何等,我當奉持?」

佛告阿難:「今此法門名『最無比』,挍量種種真實功德,以是名字汝當奉持。所以者何?此經中說最無比法,一切世間甚難聞故。」

時薄伽梵說是經已,尊者阿難、大苾芻眾,無量菩薩及諸天、人、阿素洛等,聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,嘆未曾有,信受奉行。
