佛說作佛形像經

佛至拘鹽惟國。有諸樹園主,名拘翼。時國王名優填,年十四。聞佛當來,王即敕傍臣左右,皆悉嚴駕,王即行迎佛。遙見佛,心中踴躍歡喜。王即下車步,罷傍臣、左右持蓋者,王趨迎佛前,以頭面著佛足,繞佛三匝,長跪叉手,白佛言:「天上、天下人民無有能及佛者!今佛面目身體行出,光明巍巍,好乃如是,我視佛無有厭極時。今佛是天上、天下人之師也,佛慈心,所愛者多。」

佛默然不應,王復白佛言:「人作善者,其得福祐當何趣向?佛去後,我恐不復見佛,我欲作佛形像,恭敬承事之。后當得何等福?愿佛哀,為我說之,我欲聞知。」

佛言:「年少王!汝所問大善!聽我言。聽已,當置心中!」

王言:「諾!受教。」

佛告王:「若作佛形像,其得福祐,我悉為汝說之。」

王言:「受恩!」

佛言:「天下人作佛形像者,其後世所生處,眼目凈潔,面目端政,身體手足常好。生天上亦凈潔,與諸天絕異,眼目面貌好。作佛形像,得福如是。

佛陀說:『年輕的國王!你所問的是極好的問題!聽我說。聽完后,要銘記在心!』

國王說:『是!謹遵教誨。』

佛陀告訴國王:『如果製作佛陀的形像,所得到的福報,我全部為你解說。』

國王說:『感謝您的恩德!』

佛陀說:『天下人制作佛陀形像,他們後世所出生的地方,眼目清凈明亮,面容端正美好,身體手足總是美好。生到天上也會非常清凈,與諸天神截然不同,眼目面貌美好。製作佛陀形像,得到的福報就是這樣。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra on Making Buddha Images Spoken by the Buddha

The Buddha arrived at Kusavati (拘鹽惟國). There were several garden owners, one of whom was named Kuyi (拘翼). At that time, the king was named Udyana (優填), and he was only fourteen years old. Upon hearing that the Buddha was coming, the king immediately ordered his ministers and attendants to prepare the carriages, and the king himself went to welcome the Buddha. Seeing the Buddha from afar, his heart filled with joy. The king alighted from his chariot, dismissed his ministers and attendants holding parasols, and hastened to the Buddha, touching the Buddha's feet with his head and face, circumambulating the Buddha three times, kneeling with palms together, and said to the Buddha: 'Among the people in heaven and on earth, none can compare to the Buddha! Now the Buddha's face, body, and demeanor are radiant and majestic, so beautiful that I will never tire of looking at the Buddha. Now the Buddha is the teacher of people in heaven and on earth, the Buddha is compassionate, and loves many.'

The Buddha remained silent, and the king said to the Buddha again: 'If people do good deeds, where will the blessings they receive lead them? After the Buddha leaves, I fear I will never see the Buddha again. I want to make an image of the Buddha, and respectfully serve and attend to it. What kind of blessings will I receive in the future? I hope the Buddha will be compassionate and explain it to me, I want to hear it.'

The Buddha said: 'Young king! What you ask is a very good question! Listen to me. After listening, keep it in your heart!'

The king said: 'Yes! I will follow your teachings.'

The Buddha told the king: 'If you make an image of the Buddha, I will explain all the blessings you will receive.'

The king said: 'Thank you for your kindness!'

The Buddha said: 'Those in the world who make images of the Buddha, in their future lives, their eyes will be clear and bright, their faces will be beautiful and upright, and their bodies, hands, and feet will always be beautiful. Being born in heaven will also be very pure, completely different from the gods, with beautiful eyes and faces. Making an image of the Buddha brings blessings like this.

完好。死後得生第七梵天上,復勝餘天,端政絕好無比,為諸天所敬。作佛形像,得福如是。

「作佛形像,後世當生豪貴家,其實與世間人絕異。所生處,不在貧窮家作子。作佛形像,其得福如是。

「作佛形像者,後世身體常紫磨金色,端政無比。

「作佛形像,後世所生處當生富家,錢財珍寶不可勝數,常為父母、兄弟、宗親所重愛。作佛形像,其得福如是。

「作佛形像,後世生閻浮利地,常生帝王、王侯家,為賢善家作子。作佛形像,其得福如是。

「作佛形像,後世作帝王中,復最尊勝於諸國王,諸國王所歸仰。作佛形像,其得福如是。

「作佛形像,後世作遮迦越王,上天上后,來下自恣,在所作為,無所不至。作佛形像,其得福如是。

「作佛形像,後世生第七梵天上,壽一劫,智慧無有能及者。

「作佛形像,死後不復在惡道中生。生者,常自守節;心念常欲求佛道。作佛形像,其得福如是。

「作佛形像,後世生常敬佛,慈心於經,常持雜繒彩、好華、好香、然燈火、諸天下珍寶、奇物持上佛舍利,其後無數劫,會當得泥洹道。人有出意持珍寶上佛者,皆非凡人,前世故作佛道。作佛形像,其得福如是。

【English Translation】 English version Perfectly crafting the image of the Buddha, after death, one will be reborn in the seventh Brahma heaven, surpassing other devas, with unparalleled beauty and respected by all devas. Such is the merit gained from creating the image of the Buddha. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will be born into noble and wealthy families, truly distinct from ordinary people. The place of birth will not be in a poor family. Such is the merit gained from creating the image of the Buddha. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, the body will always be of a purplish-golden hue, with unparalleled beauty. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will be born into wealthy families, with countless riches and treasures, and will always be cherished and loved by parents, siblings, and relatives. Such is the merit gained from creating the image of the Buddha. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will be born in Jambudvipa, often into the families of emperors and kings, becoming children of virtuous families. Such is the merit gained from creating the image of the Buddha. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, even if one becomes an emperor, one will be the most honored and supreme among all kings, revered and admired by all kings. Such is the merit gained from creating the image of the Buddha. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will become a Cakkavatti-rāja (wheel-turning king), ascending to the heavens and then descending at will, able to accomplish anything desired. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will always respect the Buddha, have compassion for the sutras, and constantly offer various silk ribbons, beautiful flowers, fragrant incense, lit lamps, all the treasures of the world, and rare objects to the śarīra (relics) of the Buddha. After countless kalpas, one will eventually attain the path of nirvana. Those who sincerely offer treasures to the Buddha are not ordinary people; in past lives, they have already vowed to pursue the path of the Buddha. Such is the merit gained from creating the image of the Buddha. Creating the image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will gain merit.


,無有窮極盡時,不可複稱數。四天下江、海水尚可斗量、枯盡;作佛形像,其得福過於四天下江、海水十倍。後世所生,為人所敬護。

「作佛形像,譬若天雨水,人有好舍,無所畏。

「作佛形像,後世死,不復更泥犁、禽獸、薜荔惡道中生。其有人見佛形像,以慈心叉手,自歸於佛塔、舍利者,死後百劫不復入泥犁、禽獸、薜荔中,死即生天上。天上壽盡,復來下生世間,為富家作子,珍寶奇物不可勝數,然後會當得佛泥洹道。」

佛告王:「作善者!作佛形像其得福祐,如是、不唐。」

其王歡喜,前為佛作禮,以頭面著佛足。王、群臣皆為佛作禮而去。壽終,皆生阿彌陀佛國。

【English Translation】 English version: There is no end to it, and it cannot be counted again. The rivers and seas of the four continents (Sì tiānxià, referring to the four continents around Mount Sumeru) can still be measured and dried up; making Buddha images brings blessings that exceed the rivers and seas of the four continents tenfold. In future lives, one will be respected and protected by others. 『Making Buddha images is like rain falling from the sky; people with good houses have nothing to fear.』 『Making Buddha images ensures that after death in future lives, one will no longer be born in evil realms such as Naraka (Nílí, hell), as animals, or as pretas (Bìlì, hungry ghosts). If someone sees a Buddha image, joins their palms with a compassionate heart, and takes refuge in Buddha stupas and relics, after death they will not enter Naraka, the animal realm, or the realm of pretas for a hundred kalpas. After death, they will immediately be reborn in the heavens. When their lifespan in the heavens ends, they will be reborn in the world as the son of a wealthy family, surrounded by countless treasures and rare objects, and will eventually attain the Nirvana path of a Buddha.』 The Buddha told the king: 『Those who do good! The blessings obtained from making Buddha images are like this, not false.』 The king was very happy, stepped forward to pay homage to the Buddha, and touched the Buddha's feet with his head. The king and his ministers all paid homage to the Buddha and departed. After their lives ended, they were all reborn in the land of Amitabha Buddha (Āmítuó Fó, the Buddha of the Western Pure Land).
