佛說造立形像福報經

闕譯人名附東晉錄

佛至拘羅懼國,有諸樹園主名拘翼。

時國王名優填,年始十四,聞佛當來,王即敕傍臣左右皆悉嚴駕。王行迎佛,遙見世尊心中踴躍,極大歡喜止車下步,罷卻左右傍臣侍從及持蓋者,即前迎趣,便以頭面著地作禮,起復前行,如是至三。

佛言:「來前。」

王復前到,以頭面著佛足,起繞三匝,長跪叉手,白佛言:「天上、天下諸天人民無及佛者,今佛面目身體行步,光明巍巍好乃如是。我今視佛無有厭極,佛是天上、天下諸天人民之大師也,佛所慈心哀救甚多。」佛默然不應。

王復白佛言:「人作善者,此之福祐,當何所獲?佛去已后,我恐不復見佛。今欲作佛形像,恭敬承事,得何福報?愿佛哀愍,為我說之,我欲聞知。」

爾時,佛告年少王:「汝所問,大善。諦聽吾說,以著心中。」

王即稽首言:「受教。」

佛告王曰:「若有作佛形像,所得福祐,我今悉當爲汝說之。」

王言:「諾!受恩。」

佛言:「天下人民能作佛形像者,其後世世所生之處,眼目凈

國王再次對佛陀說:『人們行善,會得到什麼樣的福報呢?佛陀離開之後,我恐怕再也見不到佛陀了。現在我想製作佛陀的形像,恭敬地供奉,會得到什麼樣的福報呢?希望佛陀慈悲,為我解說,我想知道。』

這時,佛陀告訴年輕的國王:『你所問的問題,非常好。仔細聽我說,要放在心上。』

國王立刻叩頭說:『遵命。』

佛陀告訴國王說:『如果有人制作佛陀的形像,所得到的福報,我現在全部都為你解說。』

國王說:『好!感謝您的恩德。』

佛陀說:『天下人民如果能夠製作佛陀的形像,那麼他們後世所生的地方,眼睛會清凈明亮。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Merits of Making Buddha Images Spoken by the Buddha

The Buddha arrived at the country of Kogarajha (拘羅懼國), where there were many tree gardens, and the owner of the gardens was named Kogayaka (拘翼).

At that time, the king was named Udayana (優填), and he was only fourteen years old. When he heard that the Buddha was coming, he ordered his ministers to prepare the carriages. The king went to welcome the Buddha, and when he saw the World Honored One from afar, his heart was very excited and extremely joyful. He stopped the carriage, got out, and walked on foot. He dismissed the ministers and attendants around him, as well as those holding umbrellas, and then went forward to greet the Buddha, prostrating with his head touching the ground. After getting up, he walked forward again, repeating this three times.

The Buddha said, 'Come forward.'

The king came forward again, touched the Buddha's feet with his head, got up and circled the Buddha three times, knelt down with his palms together, and said to the Buddha, 'Among all the gods and people in heaven and on earth, no one can compare to the Buddha. Now the Buddha's face, body, and walk are so bright and majestic. Today, I look at the Buddha without any weariness. The Buddha is the great teacher of all the gods and people in heaven and on earth. The Buddha's compassionate heart has saved so many people.' The Buddha remained silent.

The king said to the Buddha again, 'What kind of blessings will people receive for doing good deeds? After the Buddha leaves, I am afraid I will never see the Buddha again. Now I want to make an image of the Buddha and respectfully serve it. What kind of blessings will I receive? I hope the Buddha will be compassionate and explain it to me. I want to know.'

At this time, the Buddha said to the young king, 'The question you have asked is very good. Listen carefully to what I say, and keep it in your heart.'

The king immediately bowed and said, 'I will obey.'

The Buddha told the king, 'If someone makes an image of the Buddha, I will now explain all the blessings they will receive to you.'

The king said, 'Good! I am grateful for your kindness.'

The Buddha said, 'If the people of the world can make an image of the Buddha, then in their future lives, their eyes will be clear and bright.'


潔面貌端政,身體手足常好柔濡,生於天上亦復凈潔諸天中勝,眼目面貌甚好無比,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,所生之處無有諸惡身體具足,死後得生第七梵天上,復諸天中形貌端政絕好無比,為諸天所敬,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世常生勢尊貴家,受其氣力與世絕異,在所生處不墮貧家,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世所生身形殊妙,紫磨金色端政無比,常為眾人所共敬愛,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世生處常在富貴之家,財產珍寶不可稱數,常為父母兄弟宗族之所愛重,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世若生閻浮提中,常生帝王公侯賢善之家,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世得作帝王特尊勝諸國王,當爲諸王之所歸仰,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世得作遮迦越王,四天下諸王皆臣屬之,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世得作遮迦越王,飛行天上覆下自恣,在所施為無所不至,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,後世生於第七梵天,壽一劫餘,智慧尊勝無上無能及者,作佛形像其福如是。于梵天壽盡當復來下,生於孝順有道法家,作佛形像其福如是。

With a clean and upright appearance, and with hands and feet that are always beautiful and soft, one is born in the heavens and is exceedingly pure, surpassing all other beings in the heavens. One's eyes and face are incomparably beautiful. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, one is born in places free from all evils, with a complete and perfect body. After death, one is reborn in the seventh Brahma heaven, and among all the heavens, one's appearance is exceptionally upright and beautiful, revered by all the gods. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, in future lives, one is always born into powerful and noble families, receiving a unique fortune and strength that sets one apart from the world. In the places where one is born, one will not fall into poverty. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, in future lives, one's form will be exceptionally wondrous, with a body of purple-gold color, upright and incomparable. One will always be loved and respected by all. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, in future lives, one is always born into wealthy and noble families, with countless riches and treasures. One is always loved and valued by parents, siblings, and relatives. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, if one is born in Jambudvipa (閻浮提), in future lives, one is always born into the families of emperors, dukes, and virtuous individuals. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will become an emperor, especially honored and surpassing all other kings, and will be revered and looked up to by all kings. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will become a Chakravarti-raja (遮迦越王, Wheel-Turning King), and all the kings of the four continents (四天下) will be subject to him. Such is the merit of creating an image of the Buddha. By creating an image of the Buddha, in future lives, one will become a Chakravarti-raja (遮迦越王, Wheel-Turning King), flying in the heavens and descending at will, accomplishing everything one desires. 處常為父母之所愛重,壽終復得生於天上,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,死後不復墮三惡道,當自守意常欲求佛。

「作佛形像,後世生處尊重於經,意欲常持雜好香華、雜好繒彩、燈火光明,諸天下中名好珍寶奉上佛塔,后無數劫,會當得佛涅槃之道。人有出意持妙珍寶、所愛重物奉上佛者,非余凡人,皆是前世作佛形像者、習菩薩道者,作佛形像其福如是。

「作佛形像,其福無量,無窮盡時不可稱數,如是四天下江河海水尚可升量,作佛形像其福甚多,多四天下江河海水過出十倍,後世所生常護佛道。

「作佛形像,譬如天雨,人有好舍無所憂畏。

「作佛形像,死後不復入于地獄、畜生、餓鬼諸惡道中。其有眾生見佛形像生恭敬心,叉手自歸佛塔舍利者,死後百劫不復入于地獄、畜生、餓鬼道中。死即生天,天上壽終,復生世間勢富之家,如是受福不可稱數,會當得佛涅槃之道。」

佛告優填王:「人作善者作佛形像,其福祐功德如是,終不唐苦。」

爾時,優填王以偈贊佛:

「佛者大聖人,  為眾生說法,  拘深瞿師園,  優填叉手問,  聞梵音審諦,  不動百福成,  作佛形像者,  得何等福報?」

爾時,世尊說偈答曰:

【English Translation】 English version: Constantly loved and valued by parents, and after the end of life, one can be reborn in the heavens. Such is the merit of making Buddha images. Making Buddha images ensures that after death, one will no longer fall into the three evil realms (hell, hungry ghosts, animals). One should guard one's mind and constantly aspire to become a Buddha. Making Buddha images ensures that in future lives, one will be born in places where the scriptures are respected. One's mind will always desire to offer various fine incense, flowers, fine silks, bright lamps, and the most precious treasures in the world to Buddha stupas. After countless kalpas, one will eventually attain the Nirvana path of the Buddha. Those who sincerely offer wonderful treasures and cherished possessions to the Buddha are not ordinary people; they are those who have made Buddha images and practiced the Bodhisattva path in previous lives. Such is the merit of making Buddha images. Making Buddha images brings immeasurable and boundless merit, without end and beyond calculation. Just as the rivers and seas of the four continents can still be measured, the merit of making Buddha images is far greater, exceeding the rivers and seas of the four continents tenfold. In future lives, one will always protect the Buddha's path. Making Buddha images is like rain falling from the sky; people with good houses have nothing to worry about or fear. Making Buddha images ensures that after death, one will no longer fall into the evil realms of hell, animals, or hungry ghosts. If sentient beings see Buddha images and generate respectful minds, clasping their hands and taking refuge in Buddha stupas and relics (Buddha's remains), they will not fall into the realms of hell, animals, or hungry ghosts for a hundred kalpas after death. Immediately after death, they will be reborn in the heavens, and after their lifespan in the heavens ends, they will be reborn into wealthy and powerful families in the world. The blessings received in this way are countless, and they will eventually attain the Nirvana path of the Buddha. The Buddha told King Udayana (優填王): 'People who do good deeds and make Buddha images receive such blessings and merits, and they will never suffer in vain.' At that time, King Udayana (優填王) praised the Buddha with a verse: 'The Buddha is a great sage, teaching the Dharma to sentient beings. In Kusinaara (拘深瞿師園), Udayana (優填) asked with clasped hands, hearing the Buddha's Brahma-like voice, truthful and trustworthy. Without wavering, one can achieve a hundred blessings. What kind of blessings can those who make Buddha images obtain?' At that time, the World-Honored One answered with a verse:


「王諦聽吾說,  福地恢上土,  福德無過者,  作佛形像報。  恒生大富家,  尊貴無極珍,  眷屬常恭敬,  作佛形像報。  世世身無患,  常得天眼報,  無比紺青色,  作佛形像報。  父母見歡忻,  端政威德重,  愛樂終無厭,  作佛形像報。  金色身焰光,  猶妙師子像,  眾生見歡喜,  作佛形像報。  閻浮提大姓,  剎利婆羅門,  福人于中生,  作佛形像報。  不生邊地國,  不盲不醜陋,  六情常完具,  作佛形像報。  臨終識宿命,  見佛在其前,  不覺死時苦,  作佛形像報。  作大名聞王,  金輪飛行帝,  典主四天下,  作佛形像報。  作釋天名因,  神足典第二,  三十三天奉,  作佛形像報。  此過出欲界,  作梵梵天王,  迦夷眾梵恭,  作佛形像報。  受福正如是,  若能刻畫作,  天地尚可稱,  此福不可量。  是故供養佛,  華香香汁涂,  供養大士者,  得漏盡無為。」

佛說經竟,王大歡喜,即起前以頭面著佛足而起,比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,及其五百傍臣左右,皆起歡喜為佛作禮,后皆往生阿彌陀佛國,作大菩薩最尊第一。優填王聞

【English Translation】 English version 『O King, listen to what I say. Fortunate lands are built upon the earth. There is no greater merit than this: it is the reward for making images of the Buddha. One will always be born into wealthy and noble families, enjoying boundless honor and preciousness. One's family will always be respectful; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. In every lifetime, one will be free from illness, and will always attain the divine eye, possessing an incomparable sapphire-blue complexion; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. One's parents will be delighted to see one, possessing a dignified and upright appearance, and commanding great respect. They will love and cherish one without end; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. One will possess a golden body and radiant light, like the magnificent image of a lion. All beings will rejoice upon seeing one; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. One will be born into a great family in Jambudvipa (the world we inhabit), such as Kshatriyas (the warrior caste in the Indian caste system) or Brahmanas (the priestly caste in the Indian caste system). Only those with great merit are born into such families; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. One will not be born in a borderland country, nor will one be blind or ugly. The six senses (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind) will always be complete; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. At the moment of death, one will remember past lives and see the Buddha before one. One will not feel the pain of death; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. One may become a king of great renown, a Chakravartin (an ideal universal ruler who governs with righteousness) who rules over the four continents, governing the entire Jambudvipa (the world we inhabit); this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. One may become the cause for becoming Sakra (the lord of the Trayastrimsa heaven) in the Trayastrimsa heaven (the heaven located on the summit of Mount Sumeru in Buddhist cosmology), possessing divine powers and ranking second in the three realms. The thirty-three heavens (Trayastrimsa) will pay homage to one; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. Transcending the desire realm (Kama-dhatu, one of the three realms in Buddhism, the realm where beings have desires and material cravings), one may become a Brahma King (the chief of the Brahma heavens) in the Brahma heavens, revered by the Brahma assembly; this is the reward for making images of the Buddha. The blessings received are as described above. If one can carve or paint images of the Buddha, even if one could measure the size of heaven and earth, the merit of making images of the Buddha would be immeasurable. Therefore, one should offer flowers, incense, and fragrant water to the Buddha, and make offerings to the great Bodhisattvas, one will attain the state of no-more-learning (arahantship) and non-action (Nirvana).』 After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the king was overjoyed. He immediately rose, touched the Buddha's feet with his head, and then stood up. The bhikkhus (monks), bhikkhunis (nuns), upasakas (male lay devotees), upasikas (female lay devotees), and five hundred ministers and attendants all rose and joyfully prostrated themselves before the Buddha. Later, they were all reborn in the Buddha-land of Amitabha (the Buddha of the Western Pure Land), becoming the greatest and most honored Bodhisattvas. King Udayana (the king of Kausambi in ancient India) heard of this


其所說,歡喜受解,即得須陀洹道。
