【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Bathing the Buddha Image Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by the Shramana Dharmaraksa of the Western Jin Dynasty
At that time, the Buddha told Mahaksatru (great ruler) and all the gods and people: 'Listen attentively with one mind.' The Buddha said: 'It is difficult to obtain a human body, and so is the unconditioned path; it is rare to encounter the appearance of a Buddha in the world. From countless asamkhya kalpas (incalculable eons) ago, I was a layman, accumulating merit through many lifetimes. In each life, I disciplined myself, transmigrating through the five paths, not greedy for wealth, giving up my body to others, sparing nothing. Eventually, I became a crown prince, and on the eighth day of the fourth month, at midnight when the morning star appeared, I was born and walked seven steps, raising my right hand and saying: 'Above and below the heavens, I alone am the honored one; I shall be the supreme teacher of gods and humans.' When the prince was born, the earth shook greatly. The first four heavenly kings, and even Brahma and Trayastrimsa (the Thirty-three Heavens), each of the gods held twelve kinds of fragrant water and various kinds of famous flowers to bathe the prince. The prince eventually attained Buddhahood, revealed the sacred Dharma, and saved all beings.'
The Buddha told the gods and people: 'All Buddhas of the ten directions are born at midnight on the eighth day of the fourth month; all Buddhas of the ten directions renounce their homes and enter the mountains to practice the Way at midnight on the eighth day of the fourth month. All Buddhas of the ten directions attain Buddhahood at midnight on the eighth day of the fourth month; all Buddhas of the ten directions enter parinirvana (final nirvana) at midnight on the eighth day of the fourth month.'
The Buddha said: 'The reason for using the eighth day of the fourth month is that at the transition between spring and summer, all calamities and sins are finished, all things universally grow, poisonous vapors have not yet spread, it is neither cold nor hot, the climate is harmonious, and it is precisely the day of the Buddha's birth. All good men and good women, after the Buddha's extinction, should sincerely remember the immeasurable power of the Buddha's merits, and bathe the Buddha's image as if the Buddha were still alive, and the blessings obtained will be immeasurable and countless.'
The Buddha said: 'When I practiced the Bodhisattva path in the past, I was Indra (king of the gods) thirty-six times, a chakravartin (wheel-turning king) thirty-six times, and a flying emperor thirty-six times. All Buddhas
(Devas, Nagas and the other eight kinds of supernatural beings)、四天王(Four Heavenly Kings)等,都會一起擁護他。
【English Translation】 English version A disciple with faith and good intentions should remember the merits and virtues of all Buddhas in the ten directions. If one uses incense, flowers, and various objects to bathe the Buddha's image, all wishes will be fulfilled, and the devas (gods) and nagas (dragons) will always follow and protect them, and they will all bear witness.
The Buddha told his disciples: 'It is difficult to obtain a human body, and it is difficult to hear the Dharma (teachings). If there are devas (gods) or humans who can reduce their attachment to their wives and children, and reduce their attachment to the wealth of the five families (referring to water, fire, thieves, government, and unfilial descendants), and use it to bathe the Buddha's image, just as when the Buddha was in the world, all wishes will be fulfilled. If one wants to escape the world, seek the unconditioned path, and not meet with death in life after life, it can be achieved; if one wants to be diligent and courageous, like Sakyamuni Buddha, it can be achieved; if one wants to be like Manjusri Avaivartika Bodhisattva, it can be achieved; if one wants to become a Cakravartin (Wheel-Turning King), flying in the sky to teach sentient beings, it can be achieved; if one wants to become a Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha) or an Arhat (Worthy One), it can be achieved; if one wants to be forever free from the three evil realms (hell, hungry ghosts, animals), it can be achieved; if one wants to be born in the heavens or in the human world, enjoying wealth and happiness, it can be achieved; if one wants to have many children and grandchildren, it can be achieved; if one wants to have longevity and be free from illness, it can be achieved. The greed of the people in the world is as deep and vast as the sea; they would rather cut off a piece of flesh from their body than give a penny to others. When a person is born, they do not bring a penny with them, and when they die, they do not take a penny with them; wealth remains in the world, and when a person dies, they must leave alone, remembering how painful this is. If one can bathe the Buddha's image, then the merit held will accompany them through life and death, without end.'
The Buddha said: 'If a person has a good heart and performs such merit, then all the good devas (gods), the eight classes of devas and nagas (Devas, Nagas and the other eight kinds of supernatural beings), the Four Heavenly Kings, etc., will all protect them together. The blessings produced by bathing the Buddha's image will keep one pure, and from this cause and condition, one will eventually attain Buddhahood (the following thirty-one lines of scripture are not in the Dan edition, but are in the Song edition, so they are retained).'
The Buddha said: 'If one uses good incense to bathe the Buddha's image, one will receive blessings, wisdom will be pure, and merit will be renowned. If one uses good flowers to scatter on the Buddha, one will receive blessings, and one's appearance will be upright and beautiful, without equal. If one offers silken banners to the Buddha, one will receive blessings, and wherever one is born, one will naturally obtain good clothes without end.'
The Buddha said: 'I have accumulated merit, practiced good deeds with sincerity, observed precepts, endured insults,'
