如是我聞:
一時薄伽梵在王舍城鷲峰山頂,與大苾芻眾千二百五十人俱,復有無量無邊大菩薩眾、天龍八部,悉皆雲集。
爾時清凈慧菩薩在眾中坐,為欲愍念諸有情故,作是思惟:「諸佛、如來以何因緣,得清凈身,相好具足?」復作是念:「諸眾生類,得值如來,親近供養,所獲福報,無量無邊。未知如來般涅槃后,所有眾生作何供養、修何功德,令彼善根速能究竟無上菩提?」作是念已,即從座起,偏袒右肩,頂禮佛足,長跪合掌白佛言:「世尊!我欲請問,愿垂聽許。」
佛言:「善男子!隨汝所問,我當爲說。」
爾時清凈慧菩薩白佛言:「諸佛、如來、應、正等覺以何因緣得清凈身,相好具足?又諸眾生得值如來,親近供養,所獲福報,無量無邊。未審如來般涅槃后,所有眾生作何供養、修何功德,令彼善根速能究竟無上菩提?」
爾時世尊告清凈慧菩薩言:「善哉,善哉!汝能為彼未來眾生髮如是問。汝今諦聽,善思念之,如說修行!吾當為汝分別解說。」
清凈慧菩薩言:「唯然,世尊!愿樂欲聞

當時,清凈慧菩薩在眾人中就坐,爲了憐憫一切有情眾生,這樣思惟:『諸佛、如來以什麼樣的因緣,得到清凈的身體,具足各種殊勝的相好?』又這樣想:『各種眾生,能夠遇到如來,親近供養,所獲得的福報,無量無邊。不知道如來般涅槃(Parinirvana,完全的涅槃)后,所有的眾生應該作何種供養、修何種功德,才能使他們的善根迅速達到無上菩提(Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi,無上正等正覺)?』這樣想著,就從座位上站起來,袒露右肩,頂禮佛足,長跪合掌對佛說:『世尊!我想要請問,希望您能允許聽取。』
佛說:『善男子!隨你所問,我當爲你解說。』
當時,清凈慧菩薩對佛說:『諸佛、如來、應、正等覺以什麼樣的因緣得到清凈的身體,具足各種殊勝的相好?又各種眾生能夠遇到如來,親近供養,所獲得的福報無量無邊。不知道如來般涅槃后,所有的眾生應該作何種供養、修何種功德,才能使他們的善根迅速達到無上菩提?』
當時,世尊告訴清凈慧菩薩說:『很好,很好!你能夠爲了那些未來的眾生提出這樣的問題。你現在仔細聽,好好思考,如所說的那樣修行!我將為你分別解說。』
清凈慧菩薩說:『是的,世尊!我非常樂意聽聞。』
【English Translation】 English version 'The Sutra of the Merits of Bathing the Buddha'
Translated by the Shramana Yijing of the Great Tang Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Bhagavan (World-Honored One) was on the summit of Mount Grdhrakuta (Vulture Peak) in Rajagrha (Royal City), together with a large assembly of Bhikshus (monks) numbering one thousand two hundred and fifty. Moreover, there were limitless and boundless great Bodhisattva assemblies, as well as the eight classes of gods and dragons, all gathered together.
At that time, Bodhisattva Pure Wisdom was seated in the assembly. Out of compassion for all sentient beings, he contemplated thus: 'By what causes and conditions do all Buddhas, the Tathagatas (Thus Come Ones), attain pure bodies, complete with excellent marks and characteristics?' He further thought: 'Sentient beings who encounter the Tathagata, draw near, and make offerings, obtain immeasurable and boundless blessings. I do not know what offerings and meritorious deeds all sentient beings should perform after the Parinirvana (complete Nirvana) of the Tathagata, so that their roots of goodness may quickly attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unsurpassed perfect enlightenment)?' Having thought thus, he immediately rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, knelt with palms joined, and said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! I wish to inquire; may you deign to listen and permit me.'
The Buddha said: 'Good man! Ask whatever you wish; I shall explain it for you.'
At that time, Bodhisattva Pure Wisdom said to the Buddha: 'By what causes and conditions do all Buddhas, Tathagatas, Arhats, Samyak-sambuddhas (rightly and completely enlightened ones) attain pure bodies, complete with excellent marks and characteristics? Moreover, sentient beings who encounter the Tathagata, draw near, and make offerings, obtain immeasurable and boundless blessings. I wonder what offerings and meritorious deeds all sentient beings should perform after the Parinirvana of the Tathagata, so that their roots of goodness may quickly attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi?'
At that time, the World-Honored One said to Bodhisattva Pure Wisdom: 'Excellent, excellent! You are able to ask such questions for the sake of future sentient beings. Now listen attentively, contemplate well, and practice as instructed! I shall explain it for you in detail.'
Bodhisattva Pure Wisdom said: 'So it is, World-Honored One! I am eager to hear.'
。」
佛告清凈慧菩薩言:「善男子!應知佈施、持戒、忍辱、精進、靜慮、智慧、慈悲喜捨、解脫、解脫知見、力、無所畏、一切佛法、一切種智善清凈故,如來清凈。若於如是諸佛、如來,以清凈心種種供養:香花瓔珞、幡蓋敷具,布在佛前,種種嚴飾,上妙香水澡浴尊儀,燒香普熏運心法界。復以飲食、鼓樂、絃歌、讚詠如來不共功德,發殊勝愿,迴向無上一切智海,所生功德,無量無邊,乃至菩提常令相續。所以者何?如來福、智不可思議,無數無等。善男子!諸佛、世尊具有三身,謂法身、受用身、化身。我涅槃后,若欲供養此三身者,當供養舍利。然有二種:一者、身骨舍利;二者、法頌舍利。」即說頌曰:
「諸法從緣起, 如來說是因; 彼法因緣盡, 是大沙門說。
「若男子、女人、苾芻五眾應造佛像。若無力者,下至大如䵃麥,造窣睹波形如棗許,剎竿如針,蓋如麩片,舍利如芥子,或寫法頌,安置其中。如上珍奇,而為供養,隨己力能,至誠殷重,如我現身,等無有異。
「善男子!若有眾生能作如是勝供養者,成就十五殊勝功德而自莊嚴:一者、常有慚愧;二者、發凈信心;三者、其心質直;四者、親近善友;五者、入無漏慧;六者、常見諸佛;七者、恒持正

【English Translation】 English version: The Buddha told Bodhisattva Qingjinghui (Pure Wisdom): 'Good man! You should know that because of the purity of giving (dāna), moral conduct (śīla), patience (kṣānti), diligence (vīrya), meditation (dhyāna), wisdom (prajñā), loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity (metta, karuna, mudita, upekkha, the four immeasurables), liberation (vimoksha), the knowledge and vision of liberation (vimoksha-jnana-darshana), strength (bala), fearlessness (vaiśāradya), all Buddha-dharmas (sarva-buddha-dharma, all the teachings of the Buddha), and all-knowing wisdom (sarvākāra-jñatā, complete knowledge of all things), the Tathagata (tathāgata, title of the Buddha) is pure. If, with a pure mind, you make various offerings to these Buddhas and Tathagatas: fragrant flowers and garlands (mālā, flower wreaths), banners, canopies, and coverings, arranging them before the Buddha, decorating them in various ways, bathing the venerable image with excellent fragrant water, burning incense to universally perfume and direct the mind throughout the Dharma realm. Furthermore, using food, drums, music, stringed instruments, and songs to praise the unique merits of the Tathagata, making extraordinary vows, and dedicating them to the unsurpassed ocean of all-knowing wisdom, the merits generated will be immeasurable and boundless, and may they continue uninterrupted until Bodhi (bodhi, enlightenment). Why? The merits and wisdom of the Tathagata are inconceivable, countless, and unequaled. Good man! The Buddhas and World-Honored Ones (bhagavan, the Blessed One) possess three bodies, namely the Dharmakaya (dharmakāya, the body of truth), the Sambhogakaya (saṃbhogakāya, the enjoyment body), and the Nirmanakaya (nirmāṇakāya, the emanation body). After my Nirvana (nirvana, passing away), if you wish to make offerings to these three bodies, you should make offerings to the relics (śarīra, remains). However, there are two types: one is bodily relics; the other is Dharma verse relics.' Then he spoke the verse: 'All dharmas arise from conditions, the Tathagata has said the cause; when the conditions of those dharmas cease, this is what the great Shramana (śrāmaṇa, ascetic) has said.' 'If men, women, Bhikshus (bhikshu, ordained male monks), or the five assemblies (bhikshuni, śikṣamāṇā, śrāmaṇera, śrāmaṇerikā, nuns, probationary nuns, novice monks, novice nuns) should build Buddha images. If they lack the ability, even if it is as small as a barley grain, build a stupa (stūpa, Buddhist monument) in the shape of a date, with a flagpole like a needle, a cover like a bran flake, and relics like mustard seeds, or write Dharma verses and place them inside. Like the precious objects mentioned above, make offerings according to your ability, with utmost sincerity and reverence, as if I were present in person, without any difference.' 'Good man! If there are sentient beings who can make such excellent offerings, they will achieve fifteen extraordinary merits to adorn themselves: First, they will always have a sense of shame and remorse; second, they will generate pure faith; third, their minds will be upright; fourth, they will be close to good friends; fifth, they will enter into undefiled wisdom; sixth, they will often see the Buddhas; seventh, they will constantly uphold the Dharma.'
法;八者、能如說行;九者、隨意當生凈佛國土;十者、若生人中,大姓尊貴,人所敬奉,生歡喜心;十一者、生在人中,自然唸佛;十二者、諸魔軍眾不能損惱;十三者、能于末世護持正法;十四者、十方諸佛之所加護;十五者、速得成就五分法身。」
爾時世尊即說頌曰:
「我般涅槃后, 能供養舍利, 或造窣睹波, 及以如來像, 于彼像塔處, 涂拭曼荼羅, 以種種香華, 散佈于其上, 以凈妙香水, 灌沐于像身, 上味諸飲食, 盡持以供養。 讚歎如來德, 無量難思議, 方便智神通, 速至於彼岸。 獲得金剛身, 具三十二相, 八十隨形好, 濟度諸群生。」
爾時清凈慧菩薩聞是頌已,白佛言:「未來眾生云何浴像?」
佛告清凈慧菩薩言:「汝等當於如來起正念心,勿著二邊,迷於空有;于諸善品,渴仰無厭;三解脫門,善修智慧;常求出離,勿住生死;于諸眾生,起大慈悲,愿得速成三種身故。
「善男子!我已為汝說四真諦、十二緣生、六波羅蜜,今更為汝及諸國王、王子、大臣、後宮妃、后、天龍、人鬼說浴像法,諸供養中最為第一,勝以恒河沙等七寶佈施。若浴像時,應以牛頭栴檀、白檀、紫檀、沉

『我般涅槃之後,如果有人能夠供養我的舍利,或者建造佛塔(窣堵波),以及塑造如來的佛像,在那佛像和佛塔的地方,塗抹和清掃曼荼羅(壇場),用各種各樣的香和花,散佈在上面,用清凈美妙的香水,灌洗佛像的身體,用最好的美味飲食,全部拿來供養。讚歎如來的功德,無量無邊難以思議,以方便的智慧和神通,迅速到達彼岸。獲得金剛不壞之身,具足三十二種大丈夫相,八十種隨形好,救濟和度脫各種眾生。』
這時,清凈慧菩薩聽了這首偈頌后,對佛說:『未來的眾生應該怎樣浴佛呢?』
佛告訴清凈慧菩薩說:『你們應當對如來生起正確的信念,不要執著于有和空這兩種極端,而迷惑于空性;對於各種善行,要渴求而不知滿足;對於空、無相、無愿這三種解脫之門(三解脫門),要好好地修習智慧;經常尋求脫離輪迴,不要停留在生死之中;對於一切眾生,生起廣大的慈悲心,希望能夠迅速成就法身、報身、化身這三種身。』
『善男子!我已經為你說了四聖諦、十二因緣、六波羅蜜,現在再為你以及各位國王、王子、大臣、後宮妃嬪、天龍、人、鬼說浴佛的方法,各種供養中,浴佛最為第一,勝過用像恒河沙數那麼多的七寶來佈施。如果浴佛的時候,應該用牛頭栴檀(Gou-shirsha-chandana)、白檀(White sandalwood)、紫檀(Red sandalwood)、沉
【English Translation】 English version 『Eight, to be able to practice as said; nine, to be able to be reborn in pure Buddha lands at will; ten, if reborn among humans, to be born into noble and respected families, revered and offered to by people, with hearts full of joy; eleven, when born among humans, to naturally remember the Buddha; twelve, various demon armies will not be able to harm or disturb; thirteen, to be able to uphold the Dharma in the degenerate age; fourteen, to be protected and blessed by the Buddhas of the ten directions; fifteen, to quickly achieve the fivefold Dharmakaya.』 (Fivefold Dharmakaya: morality body, concentration body, wisdom body, liberation body, liberation knowledge and vision body)
At that time, the World Honored One spoke this verse:
『After my Parinirvana, if one can make offerings to my relics, or build stupas, as well as create images of the Tathagata, at the places of those images and stupas, smear and sweep mandalas, scatter various kinds of incense and flowers upon them, use pure and wonderful fragrant water to bathe the Buddha's body, and offer all the best delicious foods. Praising the virtues of the Tathagata, immeasurable and inconceivable, with skillful wisdom and supernatural powers, quickly reaching the other shore. Obtaining the Vajra body, possessing the thirty-two major marks, and the eighty minor marks, saving and liberating all beings.』
At that time, Bodhisattva Pure Wisdom, having heard this verse, said to the Buddha: 『How should future beings bathe the Buddha image?』
The Buddha told Bodhisattva Pure Wisdom: 『You should generate right mindfulness towards the Tathagata, do not cling to the two extremes, and be deluded by emptiness and existence; for all good qualities, be thirsty and insatiable; for the three doors of liberation (three doors of liberation: emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness), cultivate wisdom well; constantly seek liberation, do not dwell in birth and death; towards all beings, generate great compassion, wishing to quickly achieve the three bodies (three bodies: Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, Nirmanakaya).』
『Good man! I have already spoken to you about the Four Noble Truths, the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, and the Six Paramitas. Now, I will further speak to you, as well as to the kings, princes, ministers, concubines, queens, nagas, humans, and ghosts, about the method of bathing the Buddha image. Among all offerings, bathing the Buddha image is the foremost, surpassing the giving of seven treasures equal to the sands of the Ganges River. When bathing the Buddha image, one should use Gou-shirsha-chandana (Gou-shirsha-chandana), White sandalwood (White sandalwood), Red sandalwood (Red sandalwood), Agarwood (Agarwood),
水、熏陸、鬱金香、龍腦香、零陵、藿香等,于凈石上磨作香泥,用為香水,置凈器中。于清凈處,以好土作壇,或方或圓,隨時大小,上置浴床,中安佛像,灌以香湯、凈潔洗沐,重澆清水。所用之水,皆須凈濾,勿使損蟲。其浴像水,兩指瀝取,安自頂上,名吉祥水,瀉于凈地,莫令足踏。以細軟巾,拭像令凈,燒諸名香,周遍香馥,安置本處。
「善男子!由作如是浴佛像故,能令汝等人、天大眾現受富樂,無病延年;于所愿求,無不遂意;親友眷屬,悉皆安隱;長辭八難,永出苦源;不受女身,速成正覺。既安置已,更燒諸香,親對像前,虔誠合掌,而說贊曰:
「我今灌沐諸如來, 凈智功德莊嚴聚, 愿彼五濁眾生類, 速證如來凈法身。 戒定慧解知見香, 遍十方剎常芬馥, 愿此香菸亦如是, 無量無邊作佛事。 亦愿三塗苦輪息, 悉令除熱得清涼, 皆發無上菩提心, 永出愛河登彼岸。」
佛說此經已,是時眾中有無量無邊菩薩得無垢三昧;無量諸天得不退智;諸聲聞眾愿求佛果;八萬四千眾生皆發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。
爾時清凈慧菩薩白佛言:「世尊!幸蒙大師哀愍我等,教浴像法。我今勸化國王、大臣、一切信心樂功德者,于日日中澡
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 將水、熏陸(一種香料)、鬱金香、龍腦香(一種香料)、零陵(一種香料)、藿香等,在乾淨的石頭上磨成香泥,用作香水,放置在乾淨的器皿中。在清凈的地方,用好土築起壇,或方或圓,大小隨情況而定,壇上放置浴床,中間安放佛像,用香湯、乾淨的水洗浴佛像,再澆上清水。所用的水,都必須過濾乾淨,不要傷害蟲子。洗浴佛像的水,用兩指瀝取,安放在自己的頭頂上,稱為吉祥水,倒在乾淨的地方,不要讓人踩踏。用柔軟的細巾,擦拭佛像使之乾淨,焚燒各種名貴的香,使周圍充滿香氣,然後將佛像安放在原來的地方。 『善男子!因為做了這樣浴佛像的事情,能夠使你們這些人、天大眾現在就享受富裕快樂,沒有疾病,延長壽命;對於所希望的,沒有不實現的;親友眷屬,都能夠平安穩妥;永遠脫離八難,永遠脫離痛苦的根源;不受女身,迅速成就正覺。』安放好佛像后,再次焚燒各種香,面對佛像,虔誠地合掌,然後說讚頌的偈子: 『我今灌沐諸如來,凈智功德莊嚴聚, 愿彼五濁眾生類,速證如來凈法身。 戒定慧解知見香,遍十方剎常芬馥, 愿此香菸亦如是,無量無邊作佛事。 亦愿三塗苦輪息,悉令除熱得清涼, 皆發無上菩提心,永出愛河登彼岸。』 佛說完這部經后,當時大眾中有無量無邊的菩薩得到無垢三昧(一種禪定);無量的諸天得到不退轉的智慧;各位聲聞眾發願求得佛果;八萬四千眾生都發了阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心(無上正等正覺的心)。 這時清凈慧菩薩對佛說:『世尊!有幸蒙受大師您憐憫我們,教導我們浴佛像的方法。我現在勸導國王、大臣、一切有信心喜歡做功德的人,在每天都洗浴佛像。』
【English Translation】 English version: Grind water, frankincense (a type of spice), tulips, borneol (a type of spice), lingling (a type of spice), agastache, etc., into fragrant mud on a clean stone, use it as perfume, and place it in a clean container. In a clean place, build an altar with good soil, either square or round, according to the size needed. Place a bathing platform on the altar, and place the Buddha statue in the middle. Bathe the Buddha statue with fragrant soup and clean water, then pour clean water again. All the water used must be filtered clean, and do not harm insects. Take the water used to bathe the Buddha statue with two fingers, place it on your head, call it auspicious water, and pour it on clean ground, do not let people step on it. Wipe the statue clean with a soft towel, burn various famous incenses, fill the surroundings with fragrance, and then place the Buddha statue back in its original place. 'Good men! Because of doing such a thing as bathing the Buddha statue, it can enable you, the masses of humans and gods, to enjoy wealth and happiness now, without disease, and prolong life; for what you wish for, there is nothing that is not fulfilled; relatives and family members can all be safe and secure; forever escape the eight difficulties, forever escape the source of suffering; not receive a female body, and quickly achieve perfect enlightenment.' After placing the Buddha statue, burn various incenses again, face the statue, sincerely put your palms together, and then say the verses of praise: 'I now bathe all the Tathagatas, a gathering adorned with pure wisdom and merit, May the sentient beings in the five turbidities quickly attain the pure Dharma body of the Tathagata. The incense of precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation, knowledge, and vision, pervades the ten directions and is always fragrant, May this incense smoke also be like this, immeasurable and boundless, doing the work of the Buddha. Also may the suffering wheel of the three evil paths cease, may all be relieved of heat and attain coolness, May all generate the supreme Bodhi mind, forever escape the river of love and reach the other shore.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, at that time, among the assembly, countless Bodhisattvas attained the stainless Samadhi (a state of meditation); countless gods attained non-regressing wisdom; all the Shravakas (disciples) vowed to seek the fruit of Buddhahood; eighty-four thousand sentient beings all generated the Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi (the mind of unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment). At this time, Bodhisattva Pure Wisdom said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! Fortunately, I have received the compassion of the great master, teaching us the method of bathing the Buddha statue. I now advise the kings, ministers, and all those who have faith and like to do meritorious deeds, to bathe the Buddha statue every day.'
沐尊儀,獲大利益,常當頂受,歡喜奉行!」
