【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Five Great Offerings Sutra

Translated by Śīlahhrakṣita, Tripitaka Master, Chao Feng Da Fu Shi Guanglu Qing Chuanfa Da Shi, Shramana bestowed with the Purple Robe, under Imperial Decree.

The Buddha, the World-Honored One, once resided in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti (Śrāvastī), together with a gathering of bhikshus (bhikṣu).

The Buddha told the bhikshus: 'There are five great offerings, which I will now explain to you. What are the five? They are: first, abstaining from killing, this is a great offering; second, abstaining from stealing; third, abstaining from sexual misconduct; fourth, abstaining from false speech; fifth, abstaining from drinking alcohol. These are the five great offerings.'

'For what reason is the practice of abstaining from killing called a great offering? Because by not killing, one can give limitless sentient beings the offering of fearlessness. Because of fearlessness, there is no resentment, no hatred, no harm. Because those limitless sentient beings have obtained fearlessness, and are without resentment, hatred, and harm, they can attain peaceful and happy bliss in the heavens and among humans. Therefore, abstaining from killing is called a great offering. Abstaining from stealing, abstaining from sexual misconduct, abstaining from false speech, and abstaining from drinking alcohol are also the same.'
