後漢安息國三藏安世高譯
佛言:「人生見日少,不見日多,善惡之變,不相類。侮父母,犯天子,死入泥犁,中有深淺,火泥犁有八,寒泥犁有十。入地半以下火泥犁,天地際者寒泥犁。有前惡后為善,不入泥犁。殺人盜人,欺犯人妻,欲使人死望得其財物,垢且賊,好為不善,怒罵人,榜笞系人,喜告彰人過失,嫉妒言怒,所使怒發,鬲逆天地鬼神之類,殊失壽死,下入惡泥犁中。后復變為善,有不入泥犁中者,知佛道變,雖入泥犁中,必當上天。本善者上泥洹,故曰佛道不可不知。小人不變為善,入泥犁中無樂,入泥犁復不善,入泥犁益深。其類有得為人,雖剛惡,不殺、好生,為人疾;不食肉者,為益疾;有陰德,益壽且疾。
「第一犁名曰先就乎,而是人言起無死。人居此犁中,相見即欲鬥,乎中無兵而自有兵,相傷殺無歲數又不死。有人來語起不死,以風來吹即愈。如是無歲數,已復持熱鐵劍相傷殺,已複用鐵椎相殺,以手拳極利相傷,久久無歲數,是其類。其人長且大,壽人間三千七百五十歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,萬歲為人間百三十五億歲。
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 佛說:『人活在世上見到太陽的日子少,見不到太陽的日子多,善與惡的變化,截然不同。』 侮辱父母,冒犯君王,死後墮入泥犁(naraka,地獄),其中有深淺之分。火泥犁(hot hells)有八種,寒泥犁(cold hells)有十種。進入地下一半以下的是火泥犁,接近天地交界的是寒泥犁。有人先前作惡,後來行善,就不會墮入泥犁。殺人、盜竊、欺騙姦污婦女,想要別人死以圖謀其財物,污穢且像盜賊一樣,喜歡做壞事,憤怒地謾罵別人,鞭打捆綁別人,喜歡宣揚別人的過失,嫉妒而惡語相向,被驅使而發怒,違逆天地鬼神之類,導致減損壽命而死,死後墮入惡泥犁中。後來又轉變為行善,也有不墮入泥犁中的。知道佛法的變化,即使墮入泥犁中,必定能夠升上天界。原本就善良的人,上升到泥洹(nirvana,涅槃),所以說佛法不可不知。小人不改變為善,墮入泥犁中沒有快樂,墮入泥犁后仍然不向善,墮入泥犁就越深。這類人中有可能轉世為人,即使剛強兇惡,如果不殺生、喜好生靈,為人也會多病;不吃肉的人,會更加少病;有陰德的人,會更加長壽且少病。 『第一種泥犁名叫先就乎(Sianjiuhu),這裡的人說沒有死亡。人居住在這個泥犁中,相見就想爭鬥,泥犁中沒有兵器卻自然有兵器,互相傷害殺戮沒有年歲限制也不會死亡。有人來告訴他們就不會死,用風來吹拂就能痊癒。像這樣沒有年歲限制,又拿著燒紅的鐵劍互相傷害殺戮,又用鐵椎互相殺戮,用手拳極其厲害地互相傷害,長久地沒有年歲限制,這就是他們的狀況。那裡的人又高又大,壽命以人間的三千七百五十歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一年,一萬歲相當於人間一百三十五億歲。』
【English Translation】 English version The Buddha said: 'People see the sun for few days in their lives, and more days when they do not see the sun. The changes between good and evil are dissimilar.' Insulting parents and offending the sovereign, after death, one falls into Naraka (hell), which has varying depths. There are eight types of hot hells and ten types of cold hells. Entering halfway below the earth is the hot hell, and near the boundary of heaven and earth is the cold hell. If someone previously did evil but later does good, they will not fall into Naraka. Killing, stealing, deceiving and violating women, desiring someone's death to seize their property, being filthy and like a thief, enjoying doing bad things, angrily cursing others, whipping and binding others, delighting in publicizing others' faults, being jealous and speaking angrily, being driven to anger, and defying the likes of heaven, earth, ghosts, and spirits, leading to diminished lifespan and death, after death, one falls into the evil Naraka. Later, if one transforms to doing good, there are those who do not fall into Naraka. Knowing the transformations of the Buddha's teachings, even if one falls into Naraka, they will surely ascend to heaven. Those who are originally good ascend to Nirvana, therefore it is said that the Buddha's teachings must not be unknown. If a petty person does not change to doing good, there is no joy in falling into Naraka. If one does not do good even after falling into Naraka, one falls deeper into Naraka. Among these, there are those who may be reborn as humans, and even if they are strong and evil, if they do not kill and love living beings, they will be prone to illness; those who do not eat meat will be even less prone to illness; those who have hidden virtues will be even longer-lived and less prone to illness. 'The first Naraka is called Sianjiuhu, and the people here say there is no death. People living in this Naraka want to fight as soon as they see each other. There are no weapons in the Naraka, but weapons appear naturally. They injure and kill each other without limit of years and do not die. Someone comes and tells them they will not die, and they are healed by the wind. Like this, without limit of years, they again hold red-hot iron swords and injure and kill each other, and again kill each other with iron pestles, and injure each other with extremely sharp hand fists, for a long time without limit of years, this is their condition. The people there are tall and large, and their lifespan is such that 3,750 human years is one day, 30 days is one month, 12 months is one year, and 10,000 years is equivalent to 13.5 billion human years.'
「第二犁名居盧倅略,居盧倅略一苦,當先就乎二十。如人言繩而斗之。人居此犁者,置大火中,赤輒出斗之。以復內火中,赤復出,數行斗之,久久無歲數,復燒之,出而斗之,以為方圓能不死,而復生無歲數,已復走火中無歲數,是其類也。其人長且大,壽人間七千五百歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,二萬歲為人間二百七千億萬歲。
「第三犁名桑居都,乘居都一苦,當居盧倅略二十,而人言捶殺。人居此犁者,在火中以熱不可言,左右顧見山,山間如樂狀,走往入其間,山盡來壓之,又不死無歲數。已復置火中,赤復出之無歲數。其人長且大,壽人間萬五千歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,壽四萬歲為人間五百四十億歲。
「第四犁名曰樓,樓一苦,當乘居都二十,而人言樂之。人居此犁,城甚大,其中復有小城,人從外見之,中盡有重天,人盡入其中,赤如燒鐵。以復內城中,大熱不可言,其身肌盡爛,無歲數不得息不得臥,肌骨盡燋,已復生無歲數,是其類。其人長大,壽人間三萬歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,壽八萬歲為人間千八百億歲。
「第五犁名曰旁卒,旁卒一苦,當樓二十,而人言爛煮之。人居此犁者,而坑大深浴,滿其中火,守犁者用鐵杖捶

【English Translation】 English version 『The second plough is named Julucuilue (居盧倅略, name of a hell), the suffering in Julucuilue is one unit of suffering, equivalent to first enduring twenty other sufferings. It is like people fighting with ropes. Those who dwell in this plough are placed in a great fire, and when they are red-hot, they come out to fight. Then they are put back into the fire, and when they are red-hot again, they come out again, fighting many times, for a long time without any years passing. They are burned again, and come out to fight, thinking that in this way they can avoid death, and be reborn without any years passing. Then they run back into the fire without any years passing, such is their state. The people there are tall and large, their lifespan is such that 7,500 human years is one day, thirty days is one month, twelve months is one year, and 20,000 years is equivalent to 270 billion human years.
『The third plough is named Sangjudu (桑居都, name of a hell), the suffering in Sangjudu is one unit of suffering, equivalent to twenty times that of Julucuilue, like people being beaten to death with hammers. Those who dwell in this plough, in the fire, the heat is indescribable. Looking around, they see mountains, and between the mountains there seems to be a scene of joy. They run towards it and enter, but the mountains collapse and crush them, yet they do not die and there are no years passing. Then they are placed back in the fire, and when they are red-hot, they come out again without any years passing. The people there are tall and large, their lifespan is such that 15,000 human years is one day, thirty days is one month, twelve months is one year, and 40,000 years is equivalent to 540 billion human years.
『The fourth plough is named Lou (樓, name of a hell), the suffering in Lou is one unit of suffering, equivalent to twenty times that of Sangjudu, like people enjoying pleasure. Those who dwell in this plough, the city is very large, and within it there are smaller cities. People looking from the outside see many layers of heavens within. People all enter into it, and it is like burning iron. Then they are put back into the city, and the heat is indescribable, their flesh rots away completely, without any years passing, they cannot rest or sleep, their flesh and bones are scorched, and then they are reborn without any years passing, such is their state. The people there are tall and large, their lifespan is such that 30,000 human years is one day, thirty days is one month, twelve months is one year, and 80,000 years is equivalent to 1,800 billion human years.
『The fifth plough is named Pangzu (旁卒, name of a hell), the suffering in Pangzu is one unit of suffering, equivalent to twenty times that of Lou, like people being boiled to a pulp. Those who dwell in this plough, there is a large and deep pit, filled with fire, and the guards of the plough beat them with iron rods
而內其中,燒燋人身,盡燋無歲數又不死。積燒而不死,而抱火著人身,死出一浴,復入一浴,如是無數,是其類。其人長且大,壽人間六萬歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,壽十六萬歲為人間二千一百六十億歲。
「第六犁名曰草烏卑次,草烏卑次一苦,當旁卒二十,而人言焯熱之。人居此者,城高二千里、廣四千里,火滿其中,置人其中。復以鐵覆之無歲數,如是不得息,言不得臥無歲數,燋已復燋,是其類。其人長且大,壽人間十二萬歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,壽三十二萬歲為人間四千三百二十億歲。
「第七犁名都意難且,都意難且一苦,當草烏卑次二十,如人言燒炙之與蟲。人居此犁中者,大積火如大鐵貫人,而內之無歲數。時一門開,人盡往欲出門;門復閉,復墮火中無歲數。已復見一門開,人盡走求欲出;既得出門,又復墮污泥中。污泥中有蟲唅,又不得出無歲數,是其類。其人長且大,壽人間二十四萬歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,壽六十四萬歲為人間八千六百四十億歲。
「第八犁名曰不盧都般呼,不盧都般呼一苦,當都意難且二十,如人言大苦熟之。居此犁中,地盡有火,卒人當在火中,炮且炙貫,且立臥床,不得去,不得息,爛且燋。已

【English Translation】 English version: And within it, flames scorch people's bodies, burning them endlessly without death. They accumulate burns without dying, and embrace the fire, clinging to people's bodies, dying once and entering another, countless times like this, such is their kind. These people are tall and large, their lifespan is equivalent to 60,000 human years for one day, thirty days for one month, twelve months for one year, living for 160,000 years, equivalent to 21.6 billion human years.
'The sixth hell is called Caowubici (草烏卑次, Hell's name). The suffering in Caowubici is twenty times that inflicted by the nearby prison guards, which people call the suffering of scalding heat. Those who live here reside in a city 2,000 li high and 4,000 li wide, filled with fire, where people are placed. Then it is covered with iron indefinitely, so they cannot rest, cannot lie down, endlessly scorched and re-scorched, such is their kind. These people are tall and large, their lifespan is equivalent to 120,000 human years for one day, thirty days for one month, twelve months for one year, living for 320,000 years, equivalent to 43.2 billion human years.'
'The seventh hell is called Douyinanqie (都意難且, Hell's name). The suffering in Douyinanqie is twenty times that of Caowubici, like the suffering of roasting and insect bites. Those who live in this hell are pierced by huge flames like large iron skewers, endlessly. Sometimes a door opens, and people all want to rush out; the door closes again, and they fall back into the fire indefinitely. Having seen another door open, people run to get out; having barely gotten out, they fall into the mud. In the mud there are biting insects, and they cannot get out indefinitely, such is their kind. These people are tall and large, their lifespan is equivalent to 240,000 human years for one day, thirty days for one month, twelve months for one year, living for 640,000 years, equivalent to 86.4 billion human years.'
'The eighth hell is called Buludoubanhu (不盧都般呼, Hell's name). The suffering in Buludoubanhu is twenty times that of Douyinanqie, like the suffering of great torment. Living in this hell, the ground is full of fire, the prison guards put people in the fire, branding and roasting, piercing them, and making them stand or lie on beds, unable to leave, unable to rest, rotting and scorching. Already...'
復生無歲數,其苦萬倍於他犁之苦,苦不可言,是其類。其人長且大,壽人間四十八萬歲為一日,三十日為一月,十二月為一歲,壽百二十八萬歲為人間萬七千二百八十億歲。」
佛言:「火犁八,以惡多深且遲,惡少淺且易。犁者譬如人拘於狴牢為囚徒,報作于遠,所死於野,家室半道。若墮水與此生,不得道至其死,入犁即苦,苦不可言,久久得出。所謂寒犁在天際間,有大山高二千里,主蔽風名山于雀盧山,冥無日月所不及逮,有蔽大山故冥,外有日月之王甚多,無央數寒犁中。
「第九犁名曰烏竟都,烏竟都一苦,當不盧都般呼二十,如人言暴而起之。人居此犁,寒不可言,無歲數身盡凍,數數暴而二十在。火中有聲,已復為之,其折半如弩發折,以復續其分,以大石擊大嬰,痛不可言。已復不死,其靡如鐵硙。已復硙其足,遍一身乃止。如此無歲數,如痛苦不可言。其人長且大,壽芥種百二十八斛,百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡,如是未能為萬分持一,是其類。知佛道者出疾,人晝為惡,如夜無所犯,其人入犁,晝苦夜為惡,晝無所犯者,夜不樂不可言,故佛道不可不聞知。

【English Translation】 English version: The 'Punarutpāda' (Rebirth) hell has no fixed duration; its suffering is ten thousand times greater than that of other hells, and the pain is indescribable. The beings there are tall and large, and their one day is equivalent to 480,000 years in the human realm. Thirty days make a month, twelve months make a year, and their lifespan is 1,280,000 years, equivalent to 17,280 billion years in the human realm.'
The Buddha said, 'There are eight fire hells, where those who commit more evil suffer deeper and longer, and those who commit less evil suffer shallower and shorter. The hells are like people imprisoned in jails, exiled to work in distant lands, dying in the wilderness, and their families scattered. If they fall into the water, like this life, they cannot attain the Way until death. Entering the hells is suffering, the suffering is indescribable, and it takes a long time to get out. The so-called cold hells are at the edge of the sky, with a large mountain two thousand miles high, blocking the wind. This mountain is called Cakravāla (Iron Ring Mountains), where darkness prevails, and the sun and moon cannot reach. Because this great mountain blocks the light, it is dark. Outside there are many kings of the sun and moon, and countless cold hells are among them.'
'The ninth hell is called Utpala (Blue Lotus), and one suffering in the Utpala hell is equivalent to twenty sufferings in the Arbuda Nirarbuda (Blister, Burst Blister) hells, like a person suddenly becoming violently angry. People living in this hell experience indescribable cold, with no limit to their lifespan, their bodies completely frozen, and repeatedly suffering twenty times the pain. There is a sound in the fire, and it is done again, breaking in half like an arrow breaking when fired, and then rejoining the broken parts, striking the Atata (Groaning) with large stones, the pain is indescribable. Even so, they do not die, and it grinds like an iron mill. After grinding their feet, it stops only after covering the whole body. This goes on without limit, and the suffering is indescribable. The beings there are tall and large, and their lifespan is equivalent to one hundred twenty-eight '斛' (hú, a unit of volume) of mustard seeds, removing one seed every hundred years, and even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not over. This is not even one ten-thousandth of their lifespan. Those who know the Buddha's path can escape quickly. People who do evil during the day, if they do not commit offenses at night, will enter the hells, suffering during the day and doing evil at night. Those who do not commit offenses during the day are unhappy at night, which is indescribable, so the Buddha's path must be heard and known.'
'The tenth hell is called Nirarbuda (Burst Blister), and one suffering in the Nirarbuda hell is equivalent to twenty sufferings in the Utpala hell. The beings there are tall and large, and their lifespan is equivalent to two hundred fifty-six '斛' (hú, a unit of volume) of mustard seeds, removing one seed every hundred years, and even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not over.'

「第十一犁名曰烏略,烏略一苦,當泥盧都二十。其人長且大,壽芥種五百一十二斛百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡。
「第十二犁名曰烏滿,烏滿一苦,當烏略二十。其人長且大,壽芥種千二十四斛,百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡。
「第十三犁名曰烏藉,烏藉一苦,當烏滿二十。其人長且大,壽芥種二千四十八斛,百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡。
「第十四犁名曰烏呼,烏呼一苦,當烏藉二十。其人長且大,壽芥種四千九十六斛,百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡。
「第十五犁名曰須健渠,須健渠一苦,當烏呼二十。其人長且大,壽芥種八千一百九十二斛,百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡。
「第十六犁名曰末頭干直呼,末頭干直呼一苦,當須健渠二十。其人長且大,壽芥種一萬二千三百八十四斛,百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡。
「第十七犁名曰區逋涂,區逋涂一苦,當末頭干直呼二十。其人長且大,壽芥種三萬二千七百六十八斛,百歲去一實,芥種盡壽未盡。

The people there are tall and large, and their lifespan is measured in mustard seeds: five hundred and twelve hu of mustard seeds, with one seed removed every hundred years. Even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not yet over. 『The twelfth plough is called Üman (烏滿). One suffering of Üman is equivalent to twenty times that of Ülüe. The people there are tall and large, and their lifespan is measured in mustard seeds: one thousand and twenty-four hu of mustard seeds, with one seed removed every hundred years. Even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not yet over. 『The thirteenth plough is called Üjie (烏藉). One suffering of Üjie is equivalent to twenty times that of Üman. The people there are tall and large, and their lifespan is measured in mustard seeds: eight thousand one hundred and ninety-two hu of mustard seeds, with one seed removed every hundred years. Even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not yet over. 『The sixteenth plough is called Motouganzhihu (末頭干直呼). One suffering of Motouganzhihu is equivalent to twenty times that of Xujianqu. The people there are tall and large, and their lifespan is measured in mustard seeds: twelve thousand three hundred and eighty-four hu of mustard seeds, with one seed removed every hundred years. Even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not yet over. 『The seventeenth plough is called Qubutu (區逋涂). One suffering of Qubutu is equivalent to twenty times that of Motouganzhihu. The people there are tall and large, and their lifespan is measured in mustard seeds: thirty-two thousand seven hundred and sixty-eight hu of mustard seeds, with one seed removed every hundred years. Even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not yet over. 『The eighteenth plough is called Shenmo (沈莫). One suffering of Shenmo is equivalent to twenty times that of Qubutu. The people there are tall and large, and their lifespan is measured in mustard seeds: sixty-five thousand five hundred and thirty-six hu of mustard seeds, with one seed removed every hundred years. Even when the mustard seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is not yet over. It is extremely cold and painful, indescribable, and a million times more painful than the other ploughs, an extreme pain.』 The Buddha said: 『Eighteen』
泥犁,人所犯以事善惡輕重入犁經。」
佛言:「十八泥犁,鳳凰龍下至小蟲,凡十八泥犁,人行善多行惡少,出泥犁疾,行惡多行善少,出泥犁遲。」
佛言:「是安得鬼守,十八泥犁居處冥。佛始生時,天上天下,上至三十二天,其十八泥犁皆明。佛始得道時復一明,佛朝梵時復一明,佛始行道教授天下復一明,佛般泥日復一明,上至三十二天盡明,以知佛道不可不知,人為善多者上天,為惡多者入泥犁。若為畜生,知佛道不死,小人必長生,但數聞佛道,而不學生、不近善人、不聞善事,當離憂患。其笑佛道,入泥犁中深,佛故非之。人為惡,喜罵詈惡口,至老不止,天神惡之,使為禽獸畜生血氣蟲獸,子孫用正臘上家。」
佛言:「人不為善,去人類為蟲畜,生家上與鬼,是安得鬼食乎?」
佛言:「人為善上天,后復生為人形。」
佛說十八泥犁經
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 『泥犁』(Niraya,地獄),是指人們根據生前所做善事惡事的輕重程度而進入的地方。」
佛說:『共有十八種泥犁。從鳳凰、龍到小蟲,都包含在這十八種泥犁之中。人如果行善多而作惡少,就能迅速脫離泥犁;如果作惡多而行善少,脫離泥犁就會很慢。』
佛說:『這些地方由安得鬼(Ande ghost)看守,十八種泥犁的居所都是黑暗的。佛剛出生時,天上天下,上至三十二天,所有的十八泥犁都變得光明。佛剛得道時,又一次光明;佛朝見梵天時,又一次光明;佛開始修行並教化天下時,又一次光明;佛進入涅槃時,又一次光明,上至三十二天都完全光明。因此可知佛道不可不知。人如果行善多就能昇天,作惡多就會進入泥犁。如果轉生為畜生,知道佛道就不會死亡。小人必定會長生,只是因為多次聽聞佛道,卻不學習、不親近善人、不聽聞善事,才會有憂患。那些嘲笑佛道的人,會進入更深的泥犁之中,所以佛才否定他們。人如果作惡,喜歡謾罵惡語,到老都不停止,天神會厭惡他們,使他們轉生為禽獸畜生血氣蟲獸,子孫會在正臘日用正法祭祀他們。』
佛說:『人如果不為善,就會脫離人類而轉生為蟲畜,生前與鬼為伍,難道能得到安得鬼的食物嗎?』
佛說:『人如果行善就能昇天,之後還能再次轉生為人。』
佛說《十八泥犁經》
【English Translation】 English version 『Niraya』 (地獄, Hell), refers to the place where people enter based on the weight of their good and bad deeds during their lifetime.』
The Buddha said, 『There are eighteen Nirayas. From phoenixes and dragons down to small insects, all are included in these eighteen Nirayas. If a person does more good deeds and less evil, they will quickly escape the Niraya; if they do more evil and less good, their escape from the Niraya will be slow.』
The Buddha said, 『These places are guarded by Ande ghosts (安得鬼). The residences of the eighteen Nirayas are all dark. When the Buddha was first born, throughout heaven and earth, up to the thirty-second heaven, all the eighteen Nirayas became bright. When the Buddha first attained enlightenment, there was another illumination; when the Buddha paid homage to Brahma, there was another illumination; when the Buddha began to practice and teach the world, there was another illumination; when the Buddha entered Nirvana, there was another illumination, up to the thirty-second heaven, all were completely illuminated. Therefore, it is known that the Buddha's path cannot be ignored. If a person does more good deeds, they will ascend to heaven; if they do more evil, they will enter the Niraya. If they are reborn as animals, knowing the Buddha's path, they will not die. Petty people will surely live long, but because they often hear the Buddha's path but do not learn, do not associate with good people, and do not hear good deeds, they will have worries. Those who laugh at the Buddha's path will enter deeper into the Niraya, so the Buddha denies them. If a person does evil, likes to curse and speak evil words, and does not stop even in old age, the gods will detest them, causing them to be reborn as birds, beasts, livestock, and blood-breathing insects and animals, and their descendants will use the proper Dharma to sacrifice to them on the Zhengla day (正臘日).』
The Buddha said, 『If a person does not do good, they will leave humanity and be reborn as insects and livestock, living with ghosts in their lifetime. Can they obtain the food of the Ande ghosts?』
The Buddha said, 『If a person does good, they will ascend to heaven, and afterwards, they can be reborn as a human again.』
The Buddha speaks the Sutra of the Eighteen Nirayas.
