The Mahayana Four Dharmas Sutra

Translated by Tripitaka Master Divakara of the Great Tang Dynasty from India

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavan (世尊, World-Honored One) was in Śrāvastī (室羅筏), residing in the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma (誓多林給孤獨園), together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty bhikṣus (苾芻, monks), and also with countless bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (菩薩摩訶薩, great bodhisattvas).

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: 'There are four dharmas that a bodhisattva-mahāsattva should cultivate throughout their life, and should not abandon even if it means losing their life. What are the four? Bhikshus, a bodhisattva, throughout their life, even if faced with losing their life, must not abandon bodhicitta (菩提心, the mind of enlightenment); bhikshus, a bodhisattva, throughout their life, even if faced with losing their life, must not abandon a kalyāṇa-mitra (善知識, a virtuous friend or spiritual mentor); bhikshus, a bodhisattva, throughout their life, even if faced with losing their life, must not abandon kṣānti-rati (堪忍愛樂, patience and joy); bhikshus, a bodhisattva, throughout their life, even if faced with losing their life, must not abandon araṇya (阿練若, a secluded place for practice). Bhikshus! These four dharmas, a bodhisattva should uphold throughout their life, preferring to lose their life rather than abandon them.'

At that time, the World-Honored One further elaborated on the meaning, speaking in verse:

'The wise and intelligent in the world, Should generate bodhicitta, Always contemplating all-wisdom, Constantly drawing near to virtuous friends, Dwelling in patience and joy, Relying on secluded places, Like a lion king, Far from all fear and terror.'

'Those who are wise and intelligent, cultivating these dharmas, will quickly transcend the net of all demons, and swiftly attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (無上正等菩提, unsurpassed, right and perfect enlightenment).'

At this time, after the Bhagavan spoke this sutra, all the bhikshus and others joyfully received and practiced it.
