佛說菩薩修行四法經

大唐天竺三藏地婆訶羅譯

如是我聞:

一時佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱。爾時世尊告諸比丘:「汝等已得無量善利,當求無上佛大菩提。何以故?佛菩提者,世、出世間無等等故。若未來世諸眾生等,發意欲求佛菩提者,當修四法。何等為四?一者、當發大菩提心,寧失身命,不應退轉;二者、應當親近善友,寧失身命,不應遠離;三者、應修忍辱柔和,寧失身命,不生瞋恚;四者、當依寂靜之處,寧失身命,不思憒鬧。諸善男子!如是四法,菩薩摩訶薩應當修學。」

爾時世尊即說偈言:

「諸欲求勝果,  當發菩提心,  策勤精進行,  須依善知識。  忍辱佛所贊,  稱為有力人,  空閑聖所居,  無畏猶師子。」

爾時世尊說此偈已,復作是言:「諸有智慧大慈悲者,能修如上四種之法,其人則能解脫生死,出離魔網,成等正覺,得大涅槃。」

爾時世尊說此經已,彼諸比丘及諸菩薩聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行,作禮而去。

如是我聞:

一時,佛陀在舍衛國(Śrāvastī)祇樹給孤獨園(Jetavana Anathapindika-arama),與一千二百五十位大比丘眾在一起。當時,世尊告訴各位比丘:『你們已經獲得了無量的善利,應當追求無上的佛大菩提(Anuttarā-samyak-sambodhi)。為什麼呢?因為佛菩提是世間和出世間無與倫比的。如果未來世的眾生等,發願想要追求佛菩提,應當修習四種法。是哪四種呢?第一,應當發起大菩提心(Mahābodhicitta),寧可失去身命,也不應該退轉;第二,應當親近善友(Kalyāṇa-mitra),寧可失去身命,也不應該遠離;第三,應當修習忍辱柔和,寧可失去身命,也不要生起瞋恚;第四,應當依止寂靜之處,寧可失去身命,也不要思念憒鬧。各位善男子!像這樣的四種法,菩薩摩訶薩(Bodhisattva-mahāsattva)應當修學。』

當時,世尊就說了偈語:

『諸欲求勝果,  當發菩提心, 策勤精進行,  須依善知識。 忍辱佛所贊,  稱為有力人, 空閑聖所居,  無畏猶師子。』

當時,世尊說完這偈語后,又說:『諸位具有智慧和大慈悲的人,能夠修習如上的四種法,這些人就能解脫生死,出離魔網,成就等正覺(Samyak-sambuddha),得到大涅槃(Mahāparinirvāṇa)。』

當時,世尊說完這部經后,那些比丘以及諸位菩薩聽聞佛所說,都非常歡喜,信受奉行,行禮后離去。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Four Dharmas for Bodhisattva Practice Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Tripitaka Master Divakara from India of the Great Tang Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Śrāvastī, with a gathering of 1,250 great Bhikshus. At that time, the World Honored One told the Bhikshus: 'You have already obtained immeasurable benefits and should seek the unsurpassed Great Bodhi (Anuttarā-samyak-sambodhi) of the Buddha. Why? Because the Bodhi of the Buddha is unparalleled in the world and beyond. If beings in future generations aspire to seek the Bodhi of the Buddha, they should cultivate four dharmas. What are the four? First, they should generate the Great Bodhicitta (Mahābodhicitta), preferring to lose their lives rather than retreat; second, they should be close to good friends (Kalyāṇa-mitra), preferring to lose their lives rather than stay away; third, they should cultivate patience and gentleness, preferring to lose their lives rather than generate anger; fourth, they should rely on quiet places, preferring to lose their lives rather than think of chaos. Good men! These four dharmas are what Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (Bodhisattva-mahāsattva) should study.'

At that time, the World Honored One spoke the following verse:

'Those who desire to seek the supreme fruit, Should generate the Bodhi mind, Urge themselves on with diligent effort, And must rely on good spiritual friends. Patience is praised by the Buddha, Called the person of great strength, Secluded places are where sages dwell, Fearless, like a lion.'

At that time, after the World Honored One spoke this verse, He further said: 'Those who have wisdom and great compassion, and can cultivate the above four kinds of dharmas, will be able to liberate themselves from birth and death, escape the net of Mara, attain Samyak-sambuddha (Samyak-sambuddha), and obtain Great Nirvana (Mahāparinirvāṇa).'

At that time, after the World Honored One spoke this Sutra, those Bhikshus and Bodhisattvas, hearing what the Buddha had said, were all greatly delighted, accepted it with faith, practiced accordingly, paid homage, and departed.
