西天譯經三藏朝散大夫試鴻臚卿傳法大師臣施護奉 詔譯

如是我聞:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。爾時,世尊告諸苾芻:「汝等諦聽!如來、應、正等覺,成就四無所畏,于大眾中,轉大法輪,如師子吼,自在無畏。」

時諸苾芻,聞是語已,五體投地,頂禮佛足,合掌白言:「云何如來四無所畏?」

佛告苾芻:「我于往昔在大眾中,而作是言:『如來成就正等正覺。』如是說時,沙門、婆羅門、魔梵、天人俱發言曰:『此所宣說,非依法教,未曾見聞有如是事。』爾時,世尊于彼眾中,無驚無怖,心得安樂,住無所畏。

「又復告言:『我身清凈,諸漏已盡。』如是說時,沙門、婆羅門、魔梵、天人俱發言曰:『此所宣說,非依法教,未曾見聞有如是事。』爾時,世尊于彼眾中,無驚無怖,心得安樂,住無所畏。

「複次告言:『一障雜染,能障道果,此障若滅,聖道自現。』如是說時,沙門、婆羅門、魔梵、天人俱發言曰:『此所宣說,非依法教,未曾見聞有如是事。』爾時,世尊于彼眾中,無驚無怖,心得安樂,住無所畏。

當時各位比丘,聽到這些話后,五體投地,頂禮佛足,合掌稟告說:『什麼是如來的四無所畏?』

佛告訴比丘:『我過去在大眾中,這樣說:『如來成就正等正覺。』這樣說的時候,沙門(sramana)、婆羅門(brahmana)、魔(Mara)、梵(Brahma)、天人(deva)都說:『這所宣說的,不符合法教,從未見過聽過這樣的事。』當時,世尊在那大眾中,沒有驚慌沒有恐懼,內心得到安樂,安住于無所畏懼。

『又告訴他們:『我的身清凈,各種煩惱已經斷盡。』這樣說的時候,沙門、婆羅門、魔、梵、天人都說:『這所宣說的,不符合法教,從未見過聽過這樣的事。』當時,世尊在那大眾中,沒有驚慌沒有恐懼,內心得到安樂,安住于無所畏懼。

『再次告訴他們:『一種障礙和雜染,能夠障礙道果,這種障礙如果滅除,聖道自然顯現。』這樣說的時候,沙門、婆羅門、魔、梵、天人都說:『這所宣說的,不符合法教,從未見過聽過這樣的事。』當時,世尊在那大眾中,沒有驚慌沒有恐懼,內心得到安樂,安住于無所畏懼。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Buddha's Four Fearlessnesses

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Shi Hu, Great Officer of the Imperial Secretariat, Acting Vice-President of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, and Dharma Master of the Western Regions, under Imperial Decree

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Jetavana Anathapindika-arama (祇樹給孤獨園) in Shravasti (舍衛國). At that time, the World Honored One told the bhiksus (苾芻): 'You should listen carefully! The Tathagata (如來), Arhat (應), Samyaksambuddha (正等覺), has achieved the four fearlessnesses. In the great assembly, he turns the great Dharma wheel, roars like a lion, and is free and fearless.'

At that time, the bhiksus, having heard these words, prostrated themselves on the ground, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and, joining their palms, said: 'What are the Tathagata's four fearlessnesses?'

The Buddha told the bhiksus: 'In the past, in the great assembly, I said this: 'The Tathagata has achieved Samyaksambuddha.' When I said this, the sramanas (沙門), brahmanas (婆羅門), Mara (魔), Brahma (梵), and devas (天人) all said: 'What is being proclaimed does not accord with the Dharma teachings; such a thing has never been seen or heard.' At that time, the World Honored One, in that assembly, was without alarm or fear, his mind attained peace and joy, and he dwelt in fearlessness.

'Furthermore, I told them: 'My body is pure, and all defilements are exhausted.' When I said this, the sramanas, brahmanas, Mara, Brahma, and devas all said: 'What is being proclaimed does not accord with the Dharma teachings; such a thing has never been seen or heard.' At that time, the World Honored One, in that assembly, was without alarm or fear, his mind attained peace and joy, and he dwelt in fearlessness.

'Furthermore, I told them: 'A single obstruction and defilement can obstruct the fruit of the path. If this obstruction is extinguished, the holy path will naturally appear.' When I said this, the sramanas, brahmanas, Mara, Brahma, and devas all said: 'What is being proclaimed does not accord with the Dharma teachings; such a thing has never been seen or heard.' At that time, the World Honored One, in that assembly, was without alarm or fear, his mind attained peace and joy, and he dwelt in fearlessness.

告言:『修戒定等,能出生死,盡諸苦報。』如是說時,沙門、婆羅門、魔梵、天人俱發言曰:『此所宣說,非依法教,未曾見聞有如是事。』爾時,世尊于彼眾中,無驚無怖,心得安樂,住無所畏。」

佛告苾芻:「是名如來轉大法輪四無所畏。

「複次,苾芻!亦於八大眾中,具足成就,四無所畏。云何為八?昔於一處,有無數百沙門眾,或住、或立、或行、或坐,互相言曰:『往昔佛說如是法相,甚深難解,未曾見聞。為是為非?為虛為實?』爾時,如來聞彼言已,心無怯懼,身無毛豎,自在無畏,如山不動。

「複次無數百婆羅門眾,無數百剎帝利眾,無數百居士眾,無數百四天王眾,無數百忉利天眾,無數百魔王眾,無數百梵天眾。如是八眾,或住、或立、或行、或坐,互相言曰:『往昔佛說如是法相,甚深難解,未曾見聞。為是為非?為虛為實?』爾時,如來聞彼言已,心無怯懼,身無毛豎,自在無畏,如山不動。」

佛言:「苾芻!是名八部大眾之中,得無所畏。」即說頌曰:

「如來自在轉法輪,  昔能成就四無畏,  天人魔梵及沙門,  聞師章句懷猶豫,  身心不動得無畏,  利樂一切諸有情,  令發無上菩提心,  恭敬修行到彼岸。」

爾時,

『此外,還有無數百的婆羅門眾,無數百的剎帝利眾(統治階級),無數百的居士眾(在家信徒),無數百的四天王眾(四大天王),無數百的忉利天眾(忉利天上的眾生),無數百的魔王眾(魔界之王),無數百的梵天眾(梵天上的眾生)。這八種大眾,他們或站立、或行走、或坐著,互相議論說:『過去佛陀所說的法相,非常深奧難以理解,我們從未見過或聽過。這到底是正確還是錯誤?是虛假還是真實?』那時,如來聽到這些話后,內心沒有絲毫的怯懦和恐懼,身體沒有絲毫的毛髮豎立,自在無畏,像山一樣不動搖。』

佛陀說:『比丘!這叫做在八部大眾之中,獲得無所畏懼。』於是說了偈頌:

『如來自在轉法輪, 昔能成就四無畏, 天人魔梵及沙門, 聞師章句懷猶豫, 身心不動得無畏, 利樂一切諸有情, 令發無上菩提心, 恭敬修行到彼岸。』

那時,

【English Translation】 English version: Someone declared: 'Cultivating precepts, concentration, and so on, can liberate from the cycle of birth and death, and completely eliminate all suffering and retribution.' When this was said, the Shramanas (wandering ascetics), Brahmins (priests), Maras (evil forces), Brahmas (pure practitioners), and Devas (heavenly beings) all spoke together, saying: 'This statement does not conform to the Buddha's teachings, and we have never seen or heard of such a thing.' At that time, the World Honored One (Buddha), among that assembly, had no alarm or fear, his mind was peaceful, and he dwelt in a state of fearlessness.

The Buddha told the Bhikshus (ordained monks): 'This is called the Tathagata's (Buddha's) turning of the great Dharma wheel with four kinds of fearlessness.'

'Furthermore, Bhikshus! The Tathagata also fully accomplishes the four kinds of fearlessness among the eight great assemblies.' What are the eight? In the past, in one place, there were countless hundreds of Shramana assemblies, either standing, walking, or sitting, discussing among themselves, saying: 'The Dharma characteristics spoken by the Buddha in the past are very profound and difficult to understand, and we have never seen or heard of them. Is this correct or incorrect? Is it false or true?' At that time, when the Tathagata heard these words, his mind had no timidity or fear, his body had no hair standing on end, he was free and fearless, like a mountain unmoving.

'Furthermore, there were countless hundreds of Brahmin assemblies, countless hundreds of Kshatriya assemblies (ruling class), countless hundreds of householder assemblies (lay followers), countless hundreds of Four Heavenly Kings assemblies (Four Heavenly Kings), countless hundreds of Trayastrimsha Heaven assemblies (beings in Trayastrimsha Heaven), countless hundreds of Mara King assemblies (kings of the Mara realm), countless hundreds of Brahma Heaven assemblies (beings in Brahma Heaven). These eight assemblies, either standing, walking, or sitting, discussed among themselves, saying: 'The Dharma characteristics spoken by the Buddha in the past are very profound and difficult to understand, and we have never seen or heard of them. Is this correct or incorrect? Is it false or true?' At that time, when the Tathagata heard these words, his mind had no timidity or fear, his body had no hair standing on end, he was free and fearless, like a mountain unmoving.'

The Buddha said: 'Bhikshus! This is called obtaining fearlessness among the eight assemblies.' Then he spoke the verse:

'The Tathagata freely turns the Dharma wheel, In the past, he was able to accomplish the four fearlessnesses, Devas, humans, Maras, Brahmas, and Shramanas, Hearing the Teacher's verses, harbor doubts, Body and mind unmoving, he obtains fearlessness, Benefiting and bringing joy to all sentient beings, Causing them to generate the unsurpassed Bodhi mind, Respectfully cultivating to reach the other shore.'

At that time,


諸大苾芻聞佛所說,信受奉行。
