佛說八大人覺經

後漢安息國三藏安世高譯

為佛弟子,常于晝夜,至心誦唸,八大人覺:

第一覺悟:世間無常,國土危脆;四大苦空,五陰無我;生滅變異,虛偽無主;心是惡源,形為罪藪。如是觀察,漸離生死。

第二覺知:多欲為苦,生死疲勞,從貪慾起;少欲無為,身心自在。

第三覺知:心無厭足,唯得多求,增長罪惡;菩薩不爾,常念知足,安貧守道,唯慧是業。

第四覺知:懈怠墜落;常行精進,破煩惱惡,摧伏四魔,出陰界獄。

第五覺悟:愚癡生死。菩薩常念,廣學多聞,增長智慧,成就辯才,教化一切,悉以大樂。

第六覺知:貧苦多怨,橫結惡緣。菩薩佈施,等念冤親,不念舊惡,不憎惡人。

第七覺悟:五欲過患。雖為俗人,不染世樂;念三衣,瓶缽法器;志願出家,守道清白;梵行高遠,慈悲一切。

第八覺知:生死熾然,苦惱無量。發大乘心,普濟一切;愿代眾生,受無量苦;令諸眾生,畢竟大樂。

如此八事,乃是諸佛菩薩大人之所覺悟。精進行道,慈悲修慧,乘法身船,至涅槃岸;復還生死,度脫眾生。以前八

第一覺悟:世間一切都是無常的,國土危脆不安;地、水、火、風四大皆是苦空,色、受、想、行、識五陰(蘊)皆是無我;有生有滅,遷變差異,虛假不實,沒有自主性;心是罪惡的根源,形體是罪惡的聚集之處。如此觀察思量,就能逐漸脫離生死輪迴。

第二覺知:貪慾過多是痛苦的根源,生死輪迴令人疲憊勞累,這些都從貪慾而生起;減少慾望,無所作為,身心就能自在安樂。

第三覺知:人心沒有滿足的時候,總是貪得無厭,這樣只會增長罪惡;菩薩不是這樣,常常想著知足常樂,安於貧困,堅守正道,以智慧為事業。

第四覺知:懈怠會使人墮落;應當常常精進修行,破除煩惱惡業,摧伏四種魔障(煩惱魔、五陰魔、死魔、天魔),脫離五陰(色、受、想、行、識)的束縛,超出六根(眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意)所對的境界牢獄。

第五覺悟:愚癡是生死的根源。菩薩常常想著,廣泛學習,多多聽聞佛法,增長智慧,成就善於辯論的才能,教化一切眾生,使他們都能得到最大的快樂。

第六覺知:貧窮困苦的人常常心懷怨恨,容易結下惡緣。菩薩行佈施,平等對待怨親,不記恨過去的仇怨,不憎恨作惡的人。

第七覺悟:五欲(財、色、名、食、睡)帶來過患。即使身為在家俗人,也不貪染世俗的快樂;常常想著三衣(袈裟)、缽盂等出家人所用的器具;立志出家,嚴守戒律,保持身心清凈;行為高尚,心懷慈悲,對待一切眾生。

第八覺知:生死就像熾烈的火焰,痛苦煩惱無量無邊。發起大乘菩提心,普遍救濟一切眾生;願意代替眾生,承受無量的痛苦;使一切眾生,最終獲得最大的快樂。

以上所說的八件事,乃是諸佛菩薩等大人物所覺悟的。精進修行,以慈悲之心修習智慧,乘坐法身之船,到達涅槃的彼岸;然後再回到生死輪迴之中,度脫眾生。以上是八大人覺。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Eight Great Awakenings Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripitaka Master from An息(Anxi) Kingdom of the Later Han Dynasty

As disciples of the Buddha, one should constantly, day and night, sincerely recite the Eight Great Awakenings:

First Awakening: The world is impermanent, and countries are fragile; the four great elements (earth, water, fire, and wind) are suffering and empty, and the five skandhas (form, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness) are without self; birth, extinction, change, and difference are false and without a master; the mind is the source of evil, and the body is the gathering place of sins. Observing in this way, one gradually departs from birth and death.

Second Awakening: Excessive desires are the cause of suffering; the cycle of birth and death is tiring and exhausting, arising from greed; having few desires and non-action leads to freedom of body and mind.

Third Awakening: The mind is never satisfied, always seeking more, increasing sins; Bodhisattvas are not like this, they constantly contemplate contentment, live in poverty and uphold the Way, and regard wisdom as their profession.

Fourth Awakening: Laziness leads to downfall; constantly practice diligence, break through afflictions and evils, subdue the four maras (affliction mara, skandha mara, death mara, and deva mara), and escape from the prison of the skandhas and the realms of the senses.

Fifth Awakening: Ignorance is the root of birth and death. Bodhisattvas constantly contemplate, widely learn and hear much, increase wisdom, achieve eloquence, teach and transform all beings, and bring them great joy.

Sixth Awakening: Poverty and suffering lead to much resentment, creating bad karmic connections. Bodhisattvas practice generosity, treat enemies and relatives equally, do not dwell on old grievances, and do not hate evil people.

Seventh Awakening: The five desires (wealth, sex, fame, food, and sleep) bring about suffering. Even as laypeople, they are not tainted by worldly pleasures; they contemplate the three robes (kasaya), the alms bowl, and other Dharma instruments; they aspire to leave home, uphold the precepts, and maintain purity; their conduct is noble and far-reaching, and they are compassionate to all beings.

Eighth Awakening: Birth and death are like blazing flames, with immeasurable suffering and affliction. Arouse the great Mahayana mind, universally liberate all beings; vow to take the place of all beings, enduring immeasurable suffering; and enable all beings to ultimately attain great joy.

These eight things are what the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and great beings are awakened to. Diligently practice the Way, cultivate wisdom with compassion, ride the boat of the Dharma body, and reach the shore of Nirvana; then return to birth and death to liberate sentient beings. These are the Eight Great Awakenings.


事,開導一切,令諸眾生,覺生死苦,舍離五欲,修心聖道。

若佛弟子,誦此八事,于唸唸中,滅無量罪;進趣菩提,速登正覺;永斷生死,常住快樂。

【English Translation】 English version: Affairs, enlighten all, causing all sentient beings to awaken to the suffering of birth and death, to abandon the five desires (pañca kāmaguṇā, the five objects of sensual desire), and to cultivate the noble path of the mind. If a disciple of the Buddha recites these eight awakenings, in every thought, immeasurable sins will be extinguished; they will advance towards bodhi (bodhi, enlightenment), quickly attain perfect enlightenment (samyak-sambuddha, perfect enlightenment); forever cut off the cycle of birth and death, and constantly abide in eternal happiness.
