【English Translation】 English version The Sūtra of the Buddha's Teaching on the Mukta-Karṇī Tree Beads
Translator lost; now appended to the Eastern Jin record
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rāmagṛha (Rajgir), together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty Bhikṣus (monks), and countless Bodhisattvas (enlightenment beings) whose names were widely known and revered by gods and humans. At that time, King Virūḍhaka (the Cruel King) of the Nandas sent an envoy to the Buddha, who prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet and said, 'World-Honored One! My country is small and located on the border, and we are frequently plagued by bandits and thieves. The five grains are expensive, diseases are rampant, and the people are suffering. I am constantly unable to sleep peacefully. The Dharma treasury of the Tathāgata (Buddha), is vast and profound; I am preoccupied with affairs and unable to practice. I beseech the World-Honored One to bestow upon me a concise method of practice that I can easily perform day and night, so that I may be freed from suffering in future lives.'
The Buddha said to the King, 'If you wish to eradicate the hindrances of afflictions and karmic retribution, you should string together one hundred and eight Mukta-Karṇī (Sapindus mukorossi) beads and carry them with you at all times. Whether walking, sitting, or lying down, you should always be mindful and focused, without distraction, and recite the names of the Buddha (Buddha), the Dharma (Dharma, the teachings), and the Saṃgha (Saṃgha, the monastic community), then pass one Mukta-Karṇī bead. In this way, gradually move the beads, whether ten, twenty, one hundred, one thousand, or even one hundred thousand or one million. If you can complete two hundred thousand repetitions, with a mind and body free from confusion and without deceit or flattery, you will be reborn in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven (Heaven of Thirty-three) after death, where food and clothing will be provided naturally, and you will always live in peace and happiness. If you can complete one million repetitions, you will be able to sever the one hundred and eight bonds of karma, and you will begin to turn away from the stream of birth and death, and move towards Nirvāṇa (Nirvana), permanently cutting off the root of afflictions and attaining the supreme fruit.'
The envoy returned and reported to the King, who was overjoyed and bowed to the Buddha from afar, saying, 'Excellent! I shall follow this practice.' He immediately ordered his officials and people to prepare Mukta-Karṇī beads, making one thousand sets, and distributed one set to each of his relatives and members of the royal family. The King constantly recited the names, and even when he was engaged in military campaigns, he did not abandon the practice. He also thought, 'The World-Honored One is truly compassionate and universally responsive.'

【English Translation】 English version: 'If these good deeds of mine can save me from long sinking in the sea of suffering, then the Tathagata (title of the Buddha) should manifest my form and preach the Dharma for me.' Driven by the urgency of his wish, he did not eat for three days.
The Buddha then manifested his form in response to his request, came to the king's palace with his retinue, and told the king: 'The bhiksu (monk) Shadou (Shadou), reciting the names of the Triratna (Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) for ten years, has attained the fruit of Sakrdagamin (Once-Returner); gradually practicing, he is now in the World of Universal Fragrance, becoming a Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha).』 Upon hearing this, the king redoubled his efforts in cultivation.
The Buddha told Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha): 'How much more so for those who can recite the names of the Triratna tens of thousands of times? Even if one only hears the name of this person and generates a single thought of rejoicing, in future lives, they will always hear the ten virtues (Dasa-kusala).'
When the Buddha preached this Dharma, the assembly rejoiced and all wished to practice it!
