天竺三藏若羅嚴譯

如是我聞:

一時,佛在王舍城鵲封竹園。

是時,佛告諸比丘:「我當爲汝說:時與非時。善思念之!」

諸比丘言:「如是。世尊!當受教聽。」

佛告諸比丘:「是中何者為時?何者為非時?比丘當知:

「冬分八月十六日至三十日七腳為時,五腳半非時。九月一日至十五日八腳為時,六腳八指為非時。九月十六日至三十日九腳為時,七腳六指為非時。十月一日至十五日十腳為時,八腳三指為非時。十月十六日至三十日十一腳為時,九腳三指為非時。十一月一日至十五日十二腳為時,十腳六指為非時。十一月十六日至三十日十一腳半為時,十腳一指為非時。十二月一日至十五日十一腳為時,九腳四指為非時。

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Proper and Improper Times Sutra

Translated by Tripiṭaka 若羅嚴 (Ruo Luo Yan) of India

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Veṇuvana (Bamboo Grove Monastery) at Rājagṛha (Royal City).

At that time, the Buddha told the bhikṣus (monks), 'I shall explain to you what is the proper time and what is the improper time. Think about it carefully!'

The bhikṣus said, 'Yes, World Honored One! We shall accept your teachings and listen.'

The Buddha told the bhikṣus, 'Among these, what is the proper time? What is the improper time? Bhikṣus should know:

'During the winter solstice, from the 16th to the 30th day of the eighth month, seven (a unit of time) is the proper time, and five and a half is the improper time. From the 1st to the 15th day of the ninth month, eight is the proper time, and six and eight fingers is the improper time. From the 16th to the 30th day of the ninth month, nine is the proper time, and seven and six fingers is the improper time. From the 1st to the 15th day of the tenth month, ten is the proper time, and eight and three fingers is the improper time. From the 16th to the 30th day of the tenth month, eleven is the proper time, and nine and three fingers is the improper time. From the 1st to the 15th day of the eleventh month, twelve is the proper time, and ten and six fingers is the improper time. From the 16th to the 30th day of the eleventh month, eleven and a half is the proper time, and ten and one finger is the improper time. From the 1st to the 15th day of the twelfth month, eleven is the proper time, and nine and four fingers is the improper time.

'During the spring equinox, from the 16th to the 30th day of the twelfth month, ten is the proper time, and eight less one finger is the improper time. From the 1st to the 15th day of the first month, nine and a half is the proper time, and seven less three fingers is the improper time. From the 16th to the 30th day of the first month, nine is the proper time, and six less three fingers is the improper time. From the 1st to the 15th day of the second month, eight is the proper time, and five is the improper time. 「如是,諸比丘!我已說十二月時與非時。為諸聲聞之所應作,憐愍利益故說。我所應作已竟,汝等當行。若樹下空處,露坐思惟。諸比丘!莫為放逸,后為悔恨。是我所教誡。」佛說經竟。

時諸比丘皆大歡喜,勸助受持:

「因緣輕慢故,  命終墮惡道,  因緣修善者,  於此生天上,  緣斯修善業,  離惡得解脫,  不善觀因緣,  身壞入惡道。」

外國法師若羅嚴,手執胡本,口自宣譯。涼州道人,于填城中寫訖。

被褐懷玉,深智作愚;外如夷人,內懷明珠;千億萬劫,與道同體。

【English Translation】 English version: From the first to the thirtieth day of the fourth month, five 'feet' (a unit of measurement, representing a length of time) is the right time (suitable time), and three 'feet' less six 'fingers' (a unit of measurement, representing a length of time) is the wrong time (unsuitable time). From the first to the fifteenth day of the fourth month, four 'feet' is the right time, and two 'feet' less one 'finger' is the wrong time. From the sixteenth to the thirtieth day of the fourth month after the summer solstice, three 'feet' is the right time, and two 'feet' less four 'fingers' is the wrong time. From the first to the fifteenth day of the fifth month, two 'feet' is the right time, less three 'fingers' is the wrong time. From the sixteenth to the thirtieth day of the fifth month, two and a half 'feet' is the right time, one 'foot' less is the wrong time. What I should do is now done, you should go and practice. You can sit in meditation under the trees in empty places, in the open air. O bhikshus! Do not be negligent, lest you regret it later. This is what I have taught.' The Buddha finished speaking this sutra. At that time, all the bhikshus were very happy, encouraging and helping each other to uphold it: 'Because of slighting the causes and conditions, after death one will fall into evil realms; because of cultivating good deeds, one will be born in the heavens; by relying on cultivating these good deeds, one can be free from evil and attain liberation; not being good at observing causes and conditions, after the body breaks down, one will fall into evil realms.' The foreign Dharma master Ruo Luo Yan, holding the barbarian's scripture in his hand, personally translated it orally. The Daoist of Liangzhou finished copying it in Tiancheng. Wearing coarse cloth but cherishing jade, having profound wisdom but acting like a fool; outwardly like a person from a remote region, inwardly cherishing a bright pearl; through billions of kalpas, being of the same essence as the Truth.
