聞如是:
一時佛游舍衛祇樹之園須達精舍,大賢眾千二百五十人。佛告諸比丘:「有四雅行,智者常遵、丈夫所修、達士恒奉,不才愚夫所不好樂。何等為四?孝事父母,悅色養足;守仁行慈,終始不殺;惠施濟乏,未曾吝逆;遭值聖世,捐榮履道。是四雅行,智者所遵、丈夫所修、達士所奉,不才愚夫所不好樂。」
佛時頌曰:
「智者稱孝, 愍命慈活, 放施普給, 超俗崇寂。 如是正業, 明士所習, 聖見已具, 定至無為。」
佛告比丘:「復有二法,若在閑宴,或處大眾,心行莫懈:一者靜寂,賢聖默定;二者博學,講論邃義。又有二施:飲食美味以安身命;敷散經典開微悅聽。食施安身,法施遷神;一事雖快,法施為最。是以比丘念演妙法,宣慧莫癡;既自洗濯,並凈塵著。如是道法永度無窮,乃名出家,具足覺了。」
佛說經竟,比丘歡喜,作禮受教。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 聞如是: 一時,佛陀在舍衛城(Śrāvastī)的祇樹給孤獨園(Jetavana-anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma)游化,有大賢眾一千二百五十人。佛陀告訴眾比丘(bhikkhu)們:『有四種高尚的德行,智者常常遵循,大丈夫所修習,通達之士恒常奉行,沒有才能的愚蠢之人所不喜歡。是哪四種呢?孝順父母,和顏悅色地供養他們;堅守仁義,施行慈悲,始終不殺生;樂善好施,救濟貧乏,從不吝嗇違逆;遭逢聖明的時代,捨棄榮華富貴而遵循正道。這四種高尚的德行,是智者所遵循的,大丈夫所修習的,通達之士所奉行的,沒有才能的愚蠢之人所不喜歡的。』 佛陀當時以偈頌說道: 『智者稱揚孝道, 憐憫生命慈悲生活, 佈施恩惠普遍給予, 超越世俗崇尚寂靜。 如此正當的行業, 是明智之士所學習的, 聖人的見解已經具備, 必定到達無為的境界。』 佛陀告訴比丘們:『又有兩種法,無論是在閑靜之處,或處在眾人之中,內心行為都不要懈怠:一是保持靜寂,這是賢聖之人默默安定的狀態;二是博學多聞,講論深邃的義理。又有兩種佈施:一是飲食美味,用以安定身命;二是廣泛傳播經典,開啟微妙的智慧,使人喜悅聽聞。飲食的佈施安定身體,佛法的佈施提升精神;飲食佈施這一件事雖然令人快樂,但佛法的佈施最為重要。因此,比丘應當唸誦演說微妙的佛法,宣揚智慧,不要愚癡;既要自我洗滌,也要清除塵世的污染。如此修道,才能永遠脫離無盡的輪迴,才可稱為出家,具足覺悟。』 佛陀說完此經,比丘們歡喜踴躍,向佛作禮,接受教誨。 《佛說進學經》
【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove (Jetavana), Anathapindika's Monastery (anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma) in Śrāvastī (舍衛祇樹之園須達精舍), with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty wise individuals. The Buddha said to the bhikkhus (比丘): 'There are four noble practices that the wise constantly follow, the great persons cultivate, and the accomplished scholars always uphold, but which untalented and foolish people do not enjoy. What are the four? To be filial to parents, pleasing them with a joyful countenance and providing for their needs; to uphold benevolence and practice compassion, never killing throughout one's life; to give generously and aid the needy, never being stingy or resistant; and when encountering a wise era, to renounce glory and follow the path. These are the four noble practices that the wise follow, the great persons cultivate, and the accomplished scholars uphold, but which untalented and foolish people do not enjoy.' The Buddha then spoke in verse: 'The wise praise filial piety, Compassionately living with care for life, Giving generously and universally, Transcending the mundane and revering tranquility. Such righteous conduct, Is what the wise cultivate, Having attained the vision of the sages, They will surely reach the state of non-action.' The Buddha said to the bhikkhus: 'Furthermore, there are two practices that, whether in solitude or among the multitude, one should not be lax in pursuing: first, maintaining stillness and silence, which is the state of quietude for the wise and noble; second, being learned and erudite, discussing profound meanings. There are also two kinds of giving: providing food and delicious flavors to sustain life; and widely disseminating the scriptures, opening up subtle wisdom and bringing joy to the listeners. The giving of food sustains the body, while the giving of Dharma elevates the spirit; although the giving of food is pleasant, the giving of Dharma is the most important. Therefore, bhikkhus should recite and expound the wonderful Dharma, proclaiming wisdom and not being foolish; they should purify themselves and cleanse away worldly attachments. By practicing the path in this way, one can eternally transcend endless cycles, and this is what it means to be a renunciate, fully awakened.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the bhikkhus rejoiced, bowed to the Buddha, and received his teachings. 'The Sutra on Advancing in Learning Spoken by the Buddha'
