【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Buddha on the Pure Mind

Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Śīlahhrakṣita, Great Master of the Transmission of the Dharma, Great Officer of Court Service, Acting Vice President of the Ministry of Imperial Sacrifices, and Purple-Robed Śrāmaṇa, etc., under Imperial Order.

The Buddha, the World-Honored One, once resided in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Śrāvastī, together with a community of bhikshus (monks).

The Buddha told the bhikshus: 'Listen carefully! If you Śrāvakas (Disciples) cultivate the right conduct and desire to attain a pure mind, you should abandon five things and cultivate seven things to bring them to perfection. What are the five things? First, greed (lobha); second, hatred (dvesha); third, drowsiness and sleepiness; fourth, restlessness and remorse; fifth, doubt (vicikitsa). These five hindrances (pañca nivarana) should be removed and cut off.'

'What are the seven things? First, the enlightenment factor of discrimination of dharmas (dharma-vicaya sambojjhanga); second, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness (smrti sambojjhanga); third, the enlightenment factor of vigor (virya sambojjhanga); fourth, the enlightenment factor of joy (priti sambojjhanga); fifth, the enlightenment factor of tranquility (prasrabdhi sambojjhanga); sixth, the enlightenment factor of concentration (samadhi sambojjhanga); seventh, the enlightenment factor of equanimity (upeksa sambojjhanga). These seven things should be cultivated.'

'Bhikshus! What is called the pure mind should be known as another expression for the liberation of the mind, another expression for the liberation of wisdom. Because of the defilement of greed, the mind is not pure; because of the defilement of ignorance (avidya), wisdom is not pure.'

'If you bhikshus abandon the defilement of greed, you will attain the liberation of the mind; if you abandon ignorance, you will attain the liberation of wisdom.'

'Furthermore, bhikshus, those who are free from the defilement of greed and attain the liberation of the mind are called body witnesses (kaya-saksat-kriya); those who abandon ignorance and attain the liberation of wisdom are called those beyond learning (asaiksha). They are forever free from craving, understand the truth, have right knowledge manifest before them, personally realize the fruit, and reach the end of suffering. Bhikshus! You should learn what has been said in this way.'
