佛在羅閱祇耆阇崛山中,時與比丘僧千二百五十人、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷、諸天龍鬼神無央數,十方諸來菩薩十萬人,皆自然師子七寶蓮華上坐。
十方諸菩薩見佛端正無比,身有三十二相、八十種好。座中有一菩薩,名若那尸利,語文殊師利菩薩言:「仁者!知深經,能自知佛何因緣莊嚴其身,得功德如是乎?」十方諸菩薩聞是言,莫不歡喜。
文殊師利即起前長跪,白佛言:「座中諸菩薩中,有已得阿惟越致者,中有未得阿惟越致者,皆見佛身有三十二相、八十種好,莊嚴其身端正無比。何因緣得是乎?愿佛為諸菩薩說前世所作功德,諸菩薩聞之當益增功德。」
佛言:「善哉,善哉!文殊師利!發意問乃爾乎?」
佛言:「聽我說前世作功德。
「菩薩世世所重愛珍奇好物持施與人,常持好眼善意施與。用是故,佛悉得智慧知諸經法。
「菩薩世世持婇女珍寶莊飾,持善意以施與人。用是故,得佛聲萬種聲出。
「菩薩世世常以好愿善意視世間人。用是故,人民見佛視無厭極,譬如月十五日盛滿姝好,視

文殊師利菩薩隨即起身向前長跪,對佛陀說:『座中的諸位菩薩,有的已經得到阿惟越致(avaivartika,不退轉)的果位,有的尚未得到阿惟越致的果位,他們都見到佛陀的身體具有三十二相、八十種好,莊嚴其身,端正無比。這是什麼因緣所致呢?愿佛陀為諸位菩薩講述前世所作的功德,諸位菩薩聽聞之後,應當更加增長功德。』
佛陀說:『善哉,善哉!文殊師利!你發起這樣的心意來提問啊!』
佛陀說:『聽我說前世所作的功德。
『菩薩世世代代都非常珍重愛惜各種珍奇美好的物品,並將其佈施給他人,常常以美好的眼神和善意佈施。因為這個緣故,佛陀完全獲得了智慧,通曉各種經典。
『菩薩世世代代都將婇女(cǎinǚ,宮女)和珍寶裝飾品,以善良的心意佈施給他人。因為這個緣故,佛陀的聲音能發出萬種音聲。
『菩薩世世代代常常以美好的願望和善良的心意看待世間的人。因為這個緣故,人們見到佛陀,怎麼看都不會厭倦,就像農曆十五的月亮,盛滿美好,觀看』
【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Fifty Causes of the Bodhisattva's Practice
Translated by Dharma-rakṣa from Yuezhi during the Western Jin Dynasty
The Buddha was in Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rāmagṛha (Rajgir), at that time with 1,250 Bhikṣu monks, Bhikṣuṇīs (nuns), Upāsakas (male lay devotees), Upāsikās (female lay devotees), countless Devas (gods), Nāgas (dragons), ghosts, and spirits, as well as 100,000 Bodhisattvas from the ten directions, all naturally seated on seven-jeweled lotus lion thrones.
The Bodhisattvas from the ten directions saw that the Buddha was incomparably dignified, possessing the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor characteristics. Among those seated, there was a Bodhisattva named Jñānaśrī, who said to the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī: 'Virtuous one! You are knowledgeable in the profound sutras, can you know by what causes and conditions the Buddha adorned his body and obtained such merits?' All the Bodhisattvas from the ten directions were delighted to hear these words.
Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva immediately rose, knelt on his knees, and said to the Buddha: 'Among the Bodhisattvas seated here, some have already attained the state of Avaivartika (non-retrogression), and some have not yet attained the state of Avaivartika, but all see that the Buddha's body possesses the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor characteristics, adorning his body, incomparably dignified. What are the causes and conditions for this? May the Buddha explain to the Bodhisattvas the merits they accumulated in their past lives, so that the Bodhisattvas, upon hearing this, will increase their merits even more.'
The Buddha said: 'Excellent, excellent! Mañjuśrī! You have initiated such an intention to ask!'
The Buddha said: 'Listen to me as I speak of the merits accumulated in past lives.
'Bodhisattvas in life after life greatly value and cherish all kinds of rare and wonderful things, and give them away to others, always giving with good eyes and good intentions. Because of this, the Buddha has fully attained wisdom and knows all the sutras.
'Bodhisattvas in life after life use beautiful women (cǎinǚ) and precious ornaments to adorn, and give them away to others with good intentions. Because of this, the Buddha's voice can produce ten thousand kinds of sounds.
'Bodhisattvas in life after life always look at the people of the world with good wishes and good intentions. Because of this, people never tire of seeing the Buddha, just like the moon on the fifteenth day of the lunar month, full of beauty, watching.'
之無有厭。
「菩薩世世為人說經法,不從有所希望,趣使得安隱而已。用是故,佛說經時人聞無有厭飽者。
「菩薩世世不說人惡,有惡者亦不為他人說。用是故,塵垢不著佛身。
「菩薩世世常受毀辱,雖有筋力皆悉忍之。用是故,佛行,地高者為下、卑者為高。
「菩薩世世見人窮厄給足與之,見人破壞安隱令在職。用是故,佛行道時,地為現威神如喜狀。
「菩薩世世不作弓弩刀兵使人相害。用是故,佛行時,荊棘瓦石丘墟皆自辟除。
「菩薩世世從師所聞法不敢犯缺。用是故,佛所行事悉具足如是。
「菩薩世世喜然燈于佛寺及師、父母前,人有狐疑輒用解之。用是故,佛身光明焰出,殊好無有比,威神巍巍乃如是。
「菩薩世世若見奴婢說經,不呵止令斷,身復聽之。用是故,佛說經無有躓誤。
「菩薩世世不持惡目視人,設有瞋恚稍稍忍之。用是故,佛眼不大不小引長好,人有見佛無不歡喜者。
「菩薩世世見他人端正婦女,不持淫意向之。用是故,佛身顏色姝好無比,人有見者莫不歡喜。
「菩薩世世隨時熟果及好香華,持上佛、比丘僧、師、父母。用是故。果樹華見佛無不曲傾向佛。
「菩薩世世見丘墟惡道正令平正

『菩薩生生世世見到人們窮困危難,就給予他們充足的資助,見到人們的職位相破壞,就使他們安穩地回到職位上。因為這個緣故,佛陀行走時,大地顯現出威神,如同歡喜的樣子。
『菩薩生生世世不製造弓弩刀兵,使人們互相殘害。因為這個緣故,佛陀行走時,荊棘瓦石丘陵廢墟都會自動避開。
『菩薩生生世世從師長那裡聽聞佛法,不敢違犯缺少。因為這個緣故,佛陀所做的事情都如此具足圓滿。
『菩薩生生世世喜歡在佛寺以及師長、父母面前點燈,人們有疑惑就為他們解釋。因為這個緣故,佛身光明焰火顯現,非常美好無比,威嚴神聖就是這樣。

『菩薩生生世世見到丘陵廢墟惡劣的道路,就使它們平坦正直。
【English Translation】 English version There is no satiety.
'Bodhisattvas (enlightenment beings) explain the scriptures to people in life after life, not seeking any reward, but simply to bring them peace and security. For this reason, when the Buddha (awakened one) speaks the Dharma (teachings), people listen without weariness or dissatisfaction.
'Bodhisattvas never speak ill of others in life after life, and even if someone does evil, they do not spread it to others. For this reason, defilement does not cling to the Buddha's body.
'Bodhisattvas constantly endure slander and insult in life after life, and even if they have strength, they endure it all. For this reason, when the Buddha walks, high ground becomes low, and low ground becomes high.
'Bodhisattvas give generously to those in poverty and distress in life after life, and when they see people's positions ruined, they restore them to their posts in peace. For this reason, when the Buddha walks, the earth manifests its divine power, as if in joy.
'Bodhisattvas never make bows, crossbows, knives, or weapons to harm others in life after life. For this reason, when the Buddha walks, thorns, tiles, stones, hills, and ruins all move out of the way on their own.
'Bodhisattvas never violate or neglect the Dharma they have heard from their teachers in life after life. For this reason, everything the Buddha does is so complete and perfect.
'Bodhisattvas delight in lighting lamps in Buddhist temples and before their teachers and parents in life after life, and they resolve people's doubts. For this reason, the light and flames of the Buddha's body appear, extraordinarily beautiful and incomparable, with such majestic divine power.
'If Bodhisattvas see slaves speaking the scriptures in life after life, they do not scold or stop them, but listen themselves. For this reason, the Buddha's speech is without impediment or error.
'Bodhisattvas do not look at people with malicious eyes in life after life, and if they have anger, they gradually endure it. For this reason, the Buddha's eyes are neither too big nor too small, long and beautiful, and people who see the Buddha cannot help but rejoice.
'Bodhisattvas do not direct lustful thoughts towards other beautiful women in life after life. For this reason, the color of the Buddha's body is incomparably beautiful, and those who see it cannot help but rejoice.
'Bodhisattvas offer ripe fruits and fragrant flowers to the Buddha, the Bhiksu-samgha (community of monks), their teachers, and their parents in life after life. For this reason, fruit trees and flowers all bend towards the Buddha when they see him.
'Bodhisattvas make uneven and bad roads straight and even in life after life.'
,見無橋樑為作橋樑,不以錢財故恐迫人。用是故。佛所入卑門為大。
「菩薩世世見閑空無井樹之處,為種樹作井,及諸飲食令人得食。用是故,佛所行處地為出泉水出於八味。
「菩薩世世見人行步出入不說其惡。用是故,佛身悉姝好無瑕穢。
「菩薩世世持雜香涂佛身,持善意施佛及上塔。用是故,諸天人作香風之香持供養佛。
「菩薩世世持雜香水與佛及諸菩薩澡面,及楊枝梳齒。用是故,佛面口中皆香,譬若發藏之緘。
「菩薩世世見人有瞋恚意向菩薩,常以善意待之。用是故,佛行道時足下有蟲蟻,無不得安隱者,佛威神巍巍乃如是。
「菩薩世世所有國土及好香花衣被持施與佛。用是故,有人散花著佛上便成花蓋。
「菩薩世世不壞人宅舍、常喜作舍。用是故,佛鞈金剛之力四方如山,無能害佛身者。
「菩薩世世見人有飢渴者。先飯食之卻為說經。用是故,佛所止前皆有香花流水。
「菩薩世世人從有所求索,有者即與無所愛惜,用是故,佛說經時人聞之無有唐苦者;皆有所益,用是故,佛降伏諸魔。

【English Translation】 English version Seeing places without bridges, (the Bodhisattva) builds bridges for them, not forcing people due to lack of money. Because of this, the humble gate that the Buddha enters becomes great.
In lifetime after lifetime, seeing empty places without wells or trees, (the Bodhisattva) plants trees for them, digs wells, and provides various foods for people to eat. Because of this, in the places where the Buddha walks, springs of water with eight flavors emerge from the ground.
In lifetime after lifetime, seeing people walking and going in and out, (the Bodhisattva) does not speak ill of them. Because of this, the Buddha's body is entirely beautiful, without flaws or impurities.
In lifetime after lifetime, (the Bodhisattva) applies various fragrances to the Buddha's body, and with a kind heart, makes offerings to the Buddha and pagodas. Because of this, the gods and humans create fragrant winds to offer to the Buddha.
In lifetime after lifetime, (the Bodhisattva) uses various fragrant waters to wash the faces of the Buddha and the Bodhisattvas, and provides toothpicks and combs. Because of this, the Buddha's face and mouth are fragrant, like opening the seal of a treasure of fragrances.
In lifetime after lifetime, seeing people with anger directed towards the Bodhisattva, (the Bodhisattva) always treats them with kindness. Because of this, when the Buddha walks, even if there are insects under his feet, none fail to find peace and safety; the Buddha's majestic power is so awe-inspiring.
In lifetime after lifetime, (the Bodhisattva) takes all his lands and beautiful fragrant flowers and clothing to offer to the Buddha. Because of this, when someone scatters flowers on the Buddha, they form a canopy of flowers.
In lifetime after lifetime, (the Bodhisattva) does not destroy people's houses, and always likes to build houses. Because of this, the Buddha has the strength of a diamond, as firm as a mountain in all directions, and no one can harm the Buddha's body.
In lifetime after lifetime, seeing people who are hungry and thirsty, (the Bodhisattva) always first feeds them and gives them water, and then explains the scriptures to them. Because of this, in the places where the Buddha stays, there are always fragrant flowers and flowing water in front.
In lifetime after lifetime, when people ask him for something, (the Bodhisattva) immediately gives it if he has it, without any reluctance. Because of this, when the Buddha speaks the scriptures, people who hear them do not suffer in vain, and all receive benefit; because of this, the Buddha subdues all demons.
In lifetime after lifetime, (the Bodhisattva) uses beautiful music to delight the Buddha and the pagodas. Because of this, when the Buddha speaks the scriptures to his disciples, people throughout a Buddha-realm can hear it.
In lifetime after lifetime, (the Bodhisattva) makes trees of gold, silver, and various jewels to offer to the Buddha.
故,諸天龍鬼神無有能見佛頂上者。
「菩薩世世作佛塔持雜香涂之。用是故,佛所行處珍寶香華為散佛上。
「菩薩世世見人有中毒,輒持慈心往愈。用是故,佛所行處若人若樹中毒悉為治之。
「菩薩世世常隨經法不犯,心常柔軟忍辱於人。用是故,有人狂亂來至佛所,莫不得安隱者。
「菩薩世世常持若干種香供養佛舍利及涂塔。用是故,佛身無有臭處瑕穢之惡,殃禍不能及佛身,佛威神巍巍乃如是。
「菩薩世世人有疑亂若為鬼神所持,輒往救之使得度脫。用是故,佛所向處若地有蟲蟻悉為除去。
「菩薩世世事師父母,若見臥睡不數驚覺,若欲使覺當持音樂,若持好語誦經往覺之。用是故,佛在內默聲,諸天梵釋持音樂香往覺之。
「菩薩世世為佛作精舍,好治床臥具什物。用是故,蚊虻、蜂蛇、蚤虱之屬不敢近佛身。
「菩薩世世寒冬之時,為佛諸菩薩作細美之衣。用是故,隨嵐風起在佛前,不寒不熱亦不動衣毛。
「菩薩世世有奇異美飯食,終不獨食,若師父母有飯食,不減損而食之。用是故,佛舍置威神力,雖無所食,佛亦不飢渴身亦不羸。
「菩薩世世不放火于山野,併除他人三毒。用是故,佛般泥洹后,火雖盛熾,不能令佛變色

『菩薩生生世世為佛建造精舍(Vihara,寺廟),好好地佈置床鋪臥具和各種物品。因為這個緣故,蚊虻、蜂蛇、蚤虱之類不敢靠近佛的身。
『菩薩生生世世在寒冷的冬天,為佛和諸菩薩製作精細美好的衣服。因為這個緣故,即使狂風吹起在佛的面前,也不會感到寒冷或炎熱,甚至連衣服和毛髮也不會動。
『菩薩生生世世如果有奇異美好的飯食,終究不會獨自食用,如果師長父母有飯食,也不會減少他們的份額而自己食用。因為這個緣故,佛捨棄了威神力,即使沒有食物,佛也不會飢渴,身體也不會消瘦。
『菩薩生生世世不在山野放火,並且去除他人的貪嗔癡三毒。因為這個緣故,佛般涅槃(Parinirvana,圓寂)后,即使火焰非常猛烈,也不能使佛的顏色改變。
【English Translation】 English version Therefore, no gods, dragons, ghosts, or spirits can see the top of the Buddha's head.
『Bodhisattvas build stupas (Buddhist shrines) in every lifetime and anoint them with various fragrances. Because of this, precious jewels and fragrant flowers are scattered upon the Buddha wherever he goes.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, upon seeing someone poisoned, always go to heal them with a compassionate heart. Because of this, wherever the Buddha goes, whether people or trees are poisoned, they are all cured.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, always follow the sutras (Buddhist scriptures) and do not violate them, their hearts are always gentle and they are patient with others. Because of this, if someone comes to the Buddha's place in a state of madness, there is no one who does not find peace.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, always use various kinds of incense to make offerings to the Buddha's relics and to anoint the stupas. Because of this, the Buddha's body has no foul odor or blemishes, and calamities cannot reach the Buddha's body. The Buddha's majestic power is so awe-inspiring.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, if someone is confused or possessed by ghosts or spirits, always go to rescue them and enable them to be liberated. Because of this, wherever the Buddha goes, if there are insects or ants on the ground, they are all removed.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, serve their teachers and parents. If they see them sleeping, they do not startle them awake repeatedly. If they wish to awaken them, they should use music, or recite scriptures with kind words to awaken them. Because of this, when the Buddha is silently meditating, the gods, Brahma (a deity), and Indra (a deity) use music and incense to awaken him.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, build monasteries (Vihara) for the Buddha, and arrange the beds, bedding, and various items well. Because of this, mosquitoes, gadflies, bees, snakes, fleas, and lice dare not approach the Buddha's body.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, during the cold winter, make fine and beautiful clothes for the Buddha and the Bodhisattvas. Because of this, even if a strong wind arises in front of the Buddha, he does not feel cold or hot, and even his clothes and hair do not move.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, if there is extraordinary and delicious food, they never eat it alone. If their teachers and parents have food, they do not diminish their portion to eat it themselves. Because of this, the Buddha relinquishes his majestic power, and even without food, the Buddha is not hungry or thirsty, and his body does not weaken.
『Bodhisattvas, in every lifetime, do not set fires in the mountains and fields, and they eliminate the three poisons (greed, hatred, and delusion) of others. Because of this, after the Buddha's Parinirvana (final passing), even if the fire is very intense, it cannot change the Buddha's color.

「菩薩世世常上師父母及有道德人,上貴舍宅衣被飲食,有從乞者給與之。用是故,諸天及鬼神、諸長者,持世間所有珍寶什物以上佛。

『The Bodhisattva always prepares the path for the Buddha in every lifetime, anointing the ground with fragrant water. Because of this, when the Buddha walks, the devas arrange and scatter various beautiful flowers on the ground.
『The Bodhisattva always upholds the precepts in every lifetime, never violating them, nor teaching others to violate them. Because of this, even if a fierce storm arises from all directions, it cannot move a single hair of the Buddha.
『The Bodhisattva always donates five-colored canopies in the Buddha's path in every lifetime, and invites the Buddha and the Bhikshu Sangha (community of monks) to eat underneath. Because of this, wherever the Buddha goes, the devas hang five-colored canopies to follow the Buddha, and the Buddha's majestic power is so awe-inspiring.
『The Bodhisattva always offers jeweled shoes to the Buddha with a kind intention in every lifetime. Because of this, when the Buddha walks, his feet are four inches above the ground, not touching the ground, and auspicious marks appear on the soles of his feet.
『The Bodhisattva always holds banners, flags, flower canopies, and various five-colored items to offer to the Buddha's stupa (a dome-shaped structure erected as a Buddhist shrine). Because of this, various colored banners, flags, and canopies naturally arise and follow the Buddha.
『The Bodhisattva always prepares the path for the Buddha in every lifetime, sprinkling the ground with various fragrant juices. Therefore, wherever the Buddha goes, the nagas (serpent deities) sprinkle the ground with various fragrant juices.
『The Bodhisattva never speaks impure or taboo words in every lifetime, and if there are such words, he restrains himself from uttering them. Because of this, the devas, nagas, spirits, and birds cannot fly above the Buddha.
『The Bodhisattva always supports and welcomes the Buddha or the Bhikshu Sangha when they arrive, and pays homage to the Buddha. Because of this, wherever the Buddha goes, the devas, Brahma (creator god), Indra (king of the gods), Asuras (demigods or titans), ghosts and spirits, and people of the world all welcome the Buddha and touch their heads to the Buddha's feet.
『The Bodhisattva always protects his body, speech, and mind in every lifetime, not committing any evil deeds, and not only with his body, but also giving to the people of the ten directions. Because of this, when the Bodhisattva is in his mother's womb, the foul and unclean places do not touch his body, and he is always peaceful and undisturbed.
恐怖,亦無有嬈者。
「菩薩世世持善意視佛,見怨家、見父母,心正等無有異相。用是故,佛智慧悉具足,但為眾善無有惡人,有疑難問佛無不解者。
「菩薩世世持諸音樂雜香華,供養佛及塔。用是故,佛入城時城中,諸音樂不鼓而自鳴。
「菩薩世世持無梨弊結金銀珍寶附憚,持用上佛及塔,諸菩薩、比丘僧及世間人,悉佈施與之,常持和顏悅意與共語。用是故,佛行分越時卑戶為高。
「菩薩世世為佛施軒交露,令佛住行其下,持善意視佛,復讚歎佛之功德。用是故,佛放光焰日月星辰皆冥,無能當佛光明者,佛威神巍巍乃如是。」
佛言:「我前世為菩薩時,世世所行如是無數世,用人故粗說少少功德耳。我從無數世以來所有財產知非常,是故持施與人。我世世所作功德如是,釋梵天人所不能作,是皆前世所行功德所致。虛空尚可度,須彌山尚可稱,海水尚可量,佛所作功德行、累功德世,說之不可稱不可量。若有人至意念佛功德者,其福無量,況為作禮嗟嘆者哉!人有欲求佛者,作功德行亦當如是。」
佛說經已,諸菩薩及諸天皆歡喜,前以頭面禮佛而去。

『菩薩生生世世用各種音樂、各種香和花,供養佛和佛塔。因為這個緣故,佛進入城池的時候,城中的各種音樂不用敲打就自己鳴響。
『菩薩生生世世拿著無梨(無梨,一種樂器),弊結(弊結,一種裝飾品),金銀珍寶和附憚(附憚,一種裝飾品),用它們來供奉佛和佛塔,佈施給各位菩薩、比丘僧以及世間的人,總是保持和藹的臉色和愉悅的心情與他們交談。因為這個緣故,佛行走化緣的時候,低矮的房屋都變得高大。

【English Translation】 English version: There is no terror, nor is there any seduction.
『Bodhisattvas in life after life, regard the Buddha with good intentions, seeing enemies and seeing parents, their hearts are equally just without any difference. Because of this, the Buddha's wisdom is fully complete, only doing all kinds of good deeds without evil thoughts, and if anyone has doubts or difficult questions to ask the Buddha, there is nothing that cannot be answered.』
『Bodhisattvas in life after life use all kinds of music, various fragrances and flowers to make offerings to the Buddha and pagodas. Because of this, when the Buddha enters a city, the various musical instruments in the city sound by themselves without being struck.』
『Bodhisattvas in life after life hold wuli (wuli, a musical instrument), bijie (bijie, an ornament), gold, silver, treasures, and fudan (fudan, an ornament), using them to offer to the Buddha and pagodas, and giving them as alms to all Bodhisattvas, bhiksu monks, and people in the world, always maintaining a kind face and a joyful mood when talking with them. Because of this, when the Buddha goes out for alms, the low houses become tall.』
『Bodhisattvas in life after life donate curtained seats for the Buddha, allowing the Buddha to dwell and walk beneath them, looking at the Buddha with good intentions, and praising the Buddha's merits. Because of this, the Buddha emits light, and the sun, moon, and stars all become dim, and no one can match the Buddha's light; the Buddha's majestic power is so great.』
The Buddha said: 『When I was a Bodhisattva in my previous lives, what I did in life after life was like this for countless lives, and because of people, I am only roughly speaking about a little bit of merit. Since countless lives ago, I have known that all my possessions are not eternal, so I use them to give alms to others. The merits I have made in life after life are like this, which Śakra (Śakra, i.e., Indra) and the Brahmā (Brahmā, a type of deity) cannot do; this is all due to the merits made in previous lives. Even emptiness can be measured, Mount Sumeru (Sumeru, the sacred mountain in Buddhism) can be weighed, and the sea can be measured, but the meritorious deeds and the number of lives in which the Buddha has accumulated merit cannot be fully described or measured. If someone sincerely thinks of the Buddha's merits, their blessings are immeasurable, let alone those who bow and praise the Buddha! If someone wants to become a Buddha, their meritorious deeds and practice should also be like this.』
After the Buddha finished speaking the sutra, all the Bodhisattvas and all the gods were delighted, and they came forward to bow to the Buddha with their heads and faces before departing.
