【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Diligent and the Lazy Farmer Sutra

Translated by Śramaṇa Huijian of the Song Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Bamboo Grove at Rāmagṛha (王舍城), with a gathering of one thousand two hundred and fifty great Bhikshus and many Bodhisattvas.

At that time, the Buddha, intending to go from Rāmagṛha to Śrāvastī (舍衛), was led by Bodhisattvas. Śakra Devānām Indra (釋提桓因) and Brahmā (梵天) were adorned in robes, and some beings appeared as the Four Heavenly Kings (Caturmahārājakāyikas). All the Bhikshu Sangha followed behind the Buddha, and the Devas, Dragons, and Spirits made offerings from above.

Not far from the city, there was a man plowing in the field. From afar, he saw the Tathāgata's disciples attending and following, their appearance dignified and exceptionally beautiful, their majestic power awe-inspiring, their countenances as beautiful as the moon among the stars, possessing various extraordinary marks and qualities, with golden light emanating serenely, and all thirty-two major marks appearing supremely beautiful. Seeing the World-Honored One from afar, his heart filled with joy, and he wished to go to the Buddha to prostrate and pay homage, and to inquire about the meaning of the Dharma. 'It is rare to encounter a Buddha in the world, appearing only once in a long while.' But then he thought to himself, 'The plowing is not yet finished, and the sowing is not yet complete. I must wait until I have free time later to see the Buddha.'

At that time, the Buddha knew that he had given rise to this thought of laziness. The World-Honored One then smiled, emitting five-colored light. The light came from his mouth, illuminating the realms of the ten directions, bringing peace to the five paths of existence. All beings rode on the light to the Buddha's location—the beings in hell rested, the hungry ghosts were satiated, the animals contemplated goodness, the people sought liberation, and the Devas and Dragons listened attentively to the Dharma.

The wise Ānanda (阿難), understanding the seven appropriate occasions—meaning, Dharma, timing, season, self, and others—then went to the Buddha, knelt with palms together, and said to the Buddha, 'What is the reason for your smile? Since you smile, there must be a deeper meaning.'

The Buddha said to Ānanda, 'Do you see that person plowing?'

Ānanda replied, 'I have seen him.'

The Buddha said, 'This person has been plowing here for ninety-one kalpas since the time of Vipaśyin (維衛佛). Every time he sees a Buddha, he always lazily chooses to delay, and then hurriedly plows the sinful Dharma of birth and death, not recognizing the plow of the Dharma, planting the boundless field of birth and death.'

【English Translation】 English version: 'Having already missed the opportunity to be delivered by the past six Buddhas, now that you see me, you immediately regret the good intention you just aroused, wanting to deliberately be lazy and delight in planting the roots of sin.'

At that time, people heard these words from afar, abandoned their plowing and fields, came to the Buddha's place, prostrated themselves at the Buddha's feet, repented and blamed themselves: 'We are foolish and ignorant, our sins are extremely heavy, we hope you will have compassion and forgive our sins. We have been ignorant and lazy for a long time, we only hope that you can forgive and pardon us, and save us from the cycle of birth and death.'

The Buddha said, 'Excellent. Your ability to awaken is beneficial to the Dharma and will ultimately not cause harm.' The Buddha expounded the sutras for them, revealing the faults of laziness and the benefits of diligence. After hearing this, they rejoiced and vowed never to regress. Countless beings such as devas (gods), nāgas (dragons), and devas (gods) all aroused the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment (anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi-citta).

'Therefore, those who study the Buddha's path should always be diligent and not be lazy, for wandering in the cycle of birth and death involves countless kalpas (aeons).'

After the Buddha finished speaking, the worthy Ānanda (Ānanda), as well as the devas (gods), nāgas (dragons), devas (gods), and Asura-rāja (Asura king), were delighted to hear the sutra, paid homage, and withdrew.
