如是我聞:

一時,佛住王舍城耆阇崛山,與大菩薩及比丘僧無量百千億那由他眾俱。其諸菩薩,一切皆得大智善權,悉能通達無字法藏,具樂說辯不違真俗,勇猛精進永離蓋纏,調伏諸根無所執著,憐愍眾生如視一子,愛重實智如大寶洲,慚愧為身定慧為首,以大慈悲而為體性,知善不善實不實法,照了二空住勝妙地,得大名稱永安隱眠,決定修行最上之法,永離胎藏下劣之身,示現受生守護國土,諸所施為普遍賢善,離於三界能救三界,其行清凈善達自他,皆得具足如是功德。其名曰:勝思惟菩薩,勝趣行菩薩,妙音菩薩,美音菩薩,辯具菩薩,辯聚菩薩,珠髻菩薩,千輻菩薩,法輞菩薩,法響菩薩,蓮花面菩薩,蓮華眼菩薩,持地菩薩,持世菩薩,聲遍大地菩薩。如是等菩薩摩訶薩,一切皆是童子像類,於此眾中而為上首,各各與己眷屬等俱。

爾時,觀世音菩薩,與無量無數灌頂受職諸菩薩眾之所圍繞;得大勢菩薩,與無量億大梵天眾之所圍繞;勝思惟菩薩,與無量菩薩及天主帝釋

The Sutra of the Unwritten Dharma Gate of the Great Vehicle's All-Illuminating Light Treasury

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rājagṛha (Royal City), together with countless hundreds of thousands of millions of nayutas (a unit of large number) of great Bodhisattvas and Bhikṣu Sangha. All these Bodhisattvas had attained great wisdom and skillful means, were fully capable of penetrating the treasury of the unwritten Dharma, possessed eloquent speech that did not contradict the truth and the mundane, were courageous and diligent, forever free from the entanglements of afflictions, had subdued their senses, were without attachments, pitied sentient beings as if they were their only child, cherished true wisdom as if it were a great treasure island, took shame and remorse as their body, took meditation and wisdom as their head, had great compassion as their nature, knew the laws of good and not good, real and not real, illuminated the two emptinesses (emptiness of self and emptiness of phenomena), dwelt in the supreme and wonderful realm, obtained great fame, slept peacefully forever, were determined to cultivate the supreme Dharma, forever free from the inferior body of the womb, manifested rebirth to protect the country, their actions were universally virtuous and good, were free from the three realms and able to save the three realms, their conduct was pure, they were skilled in understanding both self and others, and they all possessed such merits. Their names were: Śrīmati-mati Bodhisattva (Excellent Thought Bodhisattva), Uttamagati-gamana Bodhisattva (Supreme Path Traveler Bodhisattva), Madhurasvara Bodhisattva (Sweet Sound Bodhisattva), Cārusvara Bodhisattva (Pleasing Sound Bodhisattva), Pratibhāna-yukta Bodhisattva (Possessor of Eloquence Bodhisattva), Pratibhāna-saṃcaya Bodhisattva (Accumulation of Eloquence Bodhisattva), Ratna-mukuta Bodhisattva (Jewel Crown Bodhisattva), Sahasrāra Bodhisattva (Thousand-Spoked Bodhisattva), Dharma-cakra Bodhisattva (Dharma Wheel Bodhisattva), Dharma-ghoṣa Bodhisattva (Dharma Sound Bodhisattva), Padma-mukha Bodhisattva (Lotus Face Bodhisattva), Padma-netra Bodhisattva (Lotus Eye Bodhisattva), Dharaṇīdhara Bodhisattva (Earth Holder Bodhisattva), Lokadhara Bodhisattva (World Holder Bodhisattva), Sarva-bhūmi-rava Bodhisattva (Sound Pervading All Lands Bodhisattva). All these Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas appeared as youthful figures, and were the leaders in this assembly, each accompanied by their own retinues.

At that time, Avalokiteśvara (The Bodhisattva of Compassion), was surrounded by countless and immeasurable Bodhisattvas who had received abhiseka (initiation) and ordination; Mahāsthāmaprāpta (Great Strength Bodhisattva), was surrounded by countless billions of Great Brahma Devas; Śrīmati-mati Bodhisattva (Excellent Thought Bodhisattva), was surrounded by countless Bodhisattvas and Indra (Lord of the Gods).


之所圍繞;虛空藏菩薩,與無量四天王眾之所圍繞;眾所知識菩薩,與無量婇女之所圍繞;普賢菩薩、離疑菩薩、不空見菩薩、止諸蓋菩薩、無量善巧藥王菩薩、藥上菩薩等,各與無量菩薩大眾之所圍繞;長老舍利弗、摩訶目乾連、摩訶迦葉等,各與一切大阿羅漢之所圍繞;乃至十方恒河沙等一切世界所有日月諸天子等,各以威光來至佛所,以佛神力,彼彼威光不能照曜,猶如聚墨比閻浮金;又有無量那羅延天,及以水天德叉迦龍王、阿那婆達多龍王等,亦與眷屬之所圍繞;美音乾闥婆王,亦與無量乾闥婆眾之所圍繞;無濁迦婁羅王,與七億迦婁羅王眷屬圍繞;乃至十方恒沙世界一切菩薩,各請己佛,與眷屬俱,來至此間娑婆世界,持諸上妙出世供具,供養于佛及菩薩已,各禮佛足卻住一面,坐蓮華座瞻仰世尊。

爾時勝思惟菩薩摩訶薩即從座起,偏袒右肩,右膝著地,合掌向佛,而作是言:「世尊!我為四眾,欲問如來二字之義,惟愿如來為我解說,令我等輩鹹得利益。」

爾時世尊告勝思惟菩薩言:「善男子!如來豈為一眾生故出現於世?乃為利益無量眾生出現於世。善男子!汝今乃能為四眾故,請問於我二字之義。隨汝所問,當爲汝說。」

於是勝思惟菩薩蒙佛聽許,白佛言:「世尊!有何

【English Translation】 English version: 'What are the Dharmas that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva (great being Bodhisattva) should eliminate and guard? And what are the Dharmas that the Tathāgata (the Thus Come One) has realized and awakened to? I wish you would explain these two meanings to me.'

At that time, the Buddha praised Śrīmati-mati (Excellent Thinking), saying, 'Excellent, excellent! Good man! You have already achieved immeasurable merit and wisdom, and furthermore, by the power and divine strength of the Tathāgata, you are able to ask me such questions. Listen carefully, listen carefully! Think well! I will explain it to you in detail.'

'Good man! There is one Dharma that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. What is that one Dharma? It is called desire and greed. This one Dharma, a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. Good man! Again, there is one Dharma that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. What is that one Dharma? It is called anger. This one Dharma, a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. Good man! Again, there is one Dharma that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. What is that one Dharma? It is called ignorance. This one Dharma, a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. Good man! Again, there is one Dharma that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. What is that one Dharma? It is called attachment to self. This one Dharma, a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate. 是一法,菩薩摩訶薩應當除滅。善男子!如上所說如是等法,菩薩摩訶薩應當除滅。

「善男子!汝問於我,復有何法,菩薩摩訶薩應守護者,今為汝說。善男子!有一種法,菩薩摩訶薩常當守護。何等一法?所謂己所不欲,勿勸他人。如是一法,菩薩摩訶薩常應守護。何以故?若菩薩摩訶薩守護此法,即是守護諸佛如來一切戒藏。如諸菩薩,自愛命者則不應殺,自愛財者則不應盜,自愛妻者不應侵他,自愛實語不應誑彼,自愛和合不應間他,自愛正直不應邪綺,自愛柔軟不應惡罵,自愛止足終不於他而生貪慾,自愛仁恕終不於他而生瞋恚,自愛正見終不教他令生邪見。善男子,如是菩薩發意說言,我今敬順如來正教,應當勤心守護此法,是名菩薩摩訶薩守護一法。善男子!我見如是諸菩薩等,欲求無上大菩提者,悉為樂故而求菩提,無有為苦求之者也。善男子!是故我說己所不欲,勿勸他人。如是等法,菩薩摩訶薩應當守護。」

爾時勝思惟菩薩復白佛言:「世尊!何等之法,如來克證及以覺知?惟愿為我開演其義。」

佛言:「善男子!無有一法而是如來所覺所證。何以故?于諸法中無覺無證,此是如來所證所覺。善男子!一切諸法本無有法,如來覺證;一切諸法本無有滅,如來覺證;一切諸

這時,勝思惟菩薩(Paramārtha-cintā-bodhisattva,殊勝意義的思考菩薩)又對佛說:『世尊!是怎樣的法,是如來親自證得和覺悟的呢?希望您為我開示演說其中的意義。』

【English Translation】 English version: There is one dharma that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva (great Bodhisattva) should eliminate and extinguish. Good man! Like the dharmas mentioned above, a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should eliminate and extinguish.

Good man! You asked me what other dharmas a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should protect, and now I will explain them to you. Good man! There is one dharma that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should always protect. What is this one dharma? It is: 'Do not encourage others to do what you yourself do not desire.' This is the one dharma that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should always protect. Why? If a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva protects this dharma, it is equivalent to protecting all the precepts of the Buddhas Tathāgata (Thus Come One). Just as Bodhisattvas who cherish their own lives will not kill, those who cherish their own wealth will not steal, those who cherish their own wives will not violate others, those who cherish truth will not deceive others, those who cherish harmony will not sow discord, those who cherish integrity will not be crooked and deceitful, those who cherish gentleness will not curse harshly, those who cherish contentment will never be greedy towards others, those who cherish kindness and forgiveness will never be angry towards others, and those who cherish right views will never teach others to develop wrong views. Good man, in this way, a Bodhisattva makes a vow, saying, 'I now respectfully follow the correct teachings of the Tathāgata and should diligently protect this dharma.' This is called a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva protecting one dharma. Good man! I have seen that these Bodhisattvas and others who seek unsurpassed great Bodhi (Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment) seek Bodhi for the sake of happiness, and none seek it for the sake of suffering. Good man! Therefore, I say, 'Do not encourage others to do what you yourself do not desire.' These are the dharmas that a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva should protect.

At that time, Paramārtha-cintā-bodhisattva (Bodhisattva of Supreme Meaningful Thought) again said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One! What are the dharmas that the Tathāgata has personally realized and awakened to? I hope you will explain their meaning to me.'

The Buddha said, 'Good man! There is no dharma that the Tathāgata has awakened to and realized. Why? Because there is no awakening and no realization in all dharmas; this is what the Tathāgata has realized and awakened to. Good man! All dharmas originally have no dharma; the Tathāgata awakens to and realizes this. All dharmas originally have no cessation; the Tathāgata awakens to and realizes this. All


法性離二邊,如來覺證;一切諸法本無有實,如來覺證。

「複次善男子!一切諸法,皆從自業因緣力故而得生起;而是因緣,唸唸不住猶如電光,如是業緣,如來覺證;是故我說以因緣故而諸法生,以因緣故而諸法滅,若離因緣,則無業報。如是等事,如來覺知。善男子!如是所覺一切法性,是名遍照光明之藏。善男子!何故法性名之為藏?以諸眾生世出世智,皆依此藏而得生故。如以實智觀彼法性,智依彼生,故名為藏。

「複次善男子!我亦復說一切諸法如幻如焰,如水中月,如是等事,如來覺證;又善男子!諸法性相,一味解脫,如是等事,如來覺證。善男子!如是解脫一味法性,是名遍照光明之藏。

「複次善男子!又有一法如來覺證。何等一法?所謂諸法不生不滅、不增不減、不來不去、不取不捨、非因非緣,如是等法,如來覺證。

「複次善男子!如來了知一切諸法,無有自性不可為喻,無有文字之所辯說,如是之法如來覺證。善男子!如上所說如是之法,悉是如來所覺所證。」

當佛說此遍照光明藏無字法時,有微塵數諸菩薩等得住十地;又有無量諸菩薩等住于諸地;又有無量諸菩薩等證得百千諸大三昧;又有無量塵數眾生髮阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心;又有無量無邊眾

『再者,善男子!一切諸法,都是從各自的業因緣的力量而生起的;而這些因緣,唸唸不停留,就像閃電的光芒一樣,這樣的業緣,是如來所覺悟和證實的;因此我說因為因緣的緣故,諸法產生,因為因緣的緣故,諸法滅亡,如果離開因緣,就沒有業報。像這樣的事情,如來都知道。善男子!像這樣所覺悟的一切法性,就叫做遍照光明之藏。善男子!為什麼法性被稱為藏呢?因為一切眾生的世間和出世間的智慧,都依靠這個藏而產生。好像用真實的智慧觀察那個法性,智慧依靠它而生,所以叫做藏。

【English Translation】 English version: The Dharma-nature is apart from the two extremes, as the Tathagata (如來,one who has thus gone) awakens to and realizes; all dharmas (諸法,phenomena) are fundamentally without substance, as the Tathagata awakens to and realizes.

'Furthermore, good son! All dharmas arise from the power of their own karmic causes and conditions; and these causes and conditions are momentary and unceasing, like the flash of lightning. Such karmic conditions are what the Tathagata awakens to and realizes; therefore, I say that because of causes and conditions, dharmas arise, and because of causes and conditions, dharmas cease. If separated from causes and conditions, there would be no karmic retribution. Such matters as these are known by the Tathagata. Good son! Such awakened Dharma-nature is called the Treasury of Universally Illuminating Light. Good son! Why is the Dharma-nature called a treasury? Because the mundane and supramundane wisdom of all sentient beings arises from this treasury. It is as if, with true wisdom, one observes that Dharma-nature; wisdom relies on it to arise, therefore it is called a treasury.'

'Furthermore, good son! I also say that all dharmas are like illusions, like flames, like the moon in water; such matters as these are what the Tathagata awakens to and realizes; also, good son! The nature and characteristics of dharmas are of one flavor of liberation; such matters as these are what the Tathagata awakens to and realizes. Good son! Such Dharma-nature of one flavor of liberation is called the Treasury of Universally Illuminating Light.'

'Furthermore, good son! There is also one Dharma that the Tathagata awakens to and realizes. What is that one Dharma? It is that dharmas neither arise nor cease, neither increase nor decrease, neither come nor go, neither grasp nor abandon, are neither cause nor condition; such dharmas as these are what the Tathagata awakens to and realizes.'

'Furthermore, good son! The Tathagata knows that all dharmas have no self-nature, cannot be compared, and cannot be articulated by words; such dharmas as these are what the Tathagata awakens to and realizes. Good son! Such dharmas as described above are all that the Tathagata has awakened to and realized.'

When the Buddha spoke of this wordless Dharma of the Treasury of Universally Illuminating Light, a number of Bodhisattvas (菩薩,enlightenment beings) as numerous as dust motes attained the Tenth Ground (十地,the highest stage of Bodhisattva practice); and countless Bodhisattvas dwelt on the various Grounds; and countless Bodhisattvas attained hundreds of thousands of great Samadhis (三昧,states of deep concentration); and countless sentient beings as numerous as dust motes aroused the Bodhicitta (菩提心,the mind of enlightenment), the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment; and countless boundless beings


生得阿羅漢果;又有無量無邊眾生得脫地獄、餓鬼、畜生種種諸苦,生人天中受勝妙樂;諸在會眾悉不唐捐,無有一人而空過者。

爾時佛告羅睺羅言:「善男子!我此法要,汝當受持。」

時彼會中有九十億菩薩摩訶薩,聞是語已,承佛神力,白佛言:「世尊!我等誓于娑婆世界后時後分,見有堪能為法器者,我當爲彼宣說是經,惟愿世尊不以為慮。」

爾時四天王復白佛言:「世尊!若當來世有善男子及善女人,能有受持此經典者,我當擁護,諸有愿求皆令滿足。何以故?此善男子及善女人,能持此經,是法器故。」

爾時世尊,見九十億諸菩薩等,及四天王如是請已,便作是言:「善男子!我此所說遍照光明藏無字法門,我得佛來未曾演說,今為汝等而演說之。善男子!彼未來世諸眾生等,若得聞此希有法門,當知是人久已成就無量福慧;當知是人則為承事供養於我;當知是人則為荷擔佛大菩提;當知是人決定當得成就辯才;當知是人決定當得清凈佛土;當知是人臨命終時定當得見阿彌陀佛,菩薩大眾之所圍繞;當知是人常見我身在靈鷲山,及見此等諸菩薩眾;當知是人則為已得無盡法藏;當知是人得宿命智;當知是人不墮惡道。

「複次善男子!今我說是未曾有法,若當來世

【English Translation】 English version: They will attain the fruit of Arhatship; and countless beings will be liberated from the various sufferings of hells, hungry ghosts, and animals, and be reborn in the realms of humans and gods to enjoy supreme bliss; all those present at the assembly will not be in vain, and no one will pass by empty-handed. At that time, the Buddha said to Rahula (the Buddha's son): 'Good son! You should receive and uphold this essential Dharma.' At that time, in that assembly, there were ninety billion Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (Great Bodhisattvas), who, upon hearing these words, relying on the Buddha's divine power, said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! We vow that in the later times and later periods of the Saha World (our world), when we see those who are capable of being vessels of the Dharma, we will proclaim this Sutra for them. We only wish that the World Honored One would not be concerned.' At that time, the Four Heavenly Kings (the four guardian deities) further said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! If in the future there are good men and good women who can receive and uphold this Sutra, we will protect them and fulfill all their wishes. Why? Because these good men and good women, who can uphold this Sutra, are capable vessels of the Dharma.' At that time, the World Honored One, seeing the ninety billion Bodhisattvas and the Four Heavenly Kings making such requests, then said: 'Good sons! This Dharma-door of the All-Illuminating Light Treasury of Wordlessness that I have spoken, I have never expounded since I attained Buddhahood, and now I expound it for you. Good sons! If those beings in the future can hear this rare Dharma-door, know that these people have long ago accomplished immeasurable blessings and wisdom; know that these people are serving and making offerings to me; know that these people are bearing the great Bodhi (enlightenment) of the Buddha; know that these people will certainly attain eloquence; know that these people will certainly attain a pure Buddha-land; know that these people, at the time of their death, will certainly see Amitabha Buddha (the Buddha of Infinite Light), surrounded by a great assembly of Bodhisattvas; know that these people will often see my body on Vulture Peak Mountain (Grdhrakuta Mountain), and see these Bodhisattvas; know that these people have already obtained the inexhaustible Dharma-treasury; know that these people have obtained knowledge of past lives; know that these people will not fall into evil paths. 'Furthermore, good sons! Now I am speaking this unprecedented Dharma, if in the future...'


有善男子及善女人,設有已作五逆等罪,聞此法門,若能書持讀誦解說,或勸他人書持讀誦及以解說,我見是人不墮惡道,其人所有諸煩惱障、業障報障,皆得清凈,其人來世具得五眼,其人則為一切諸佛所共灌頂,其人則為諸佛世尊及諸菩薩之所護念,其人來世在在所生,具足諸根無有缺減。」

佛說是經已,勝思惟菩薩摩訶薩等,及諸比丘,天龍八部,聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行。

大乘遍照光明藏無字法門經

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 如果有善男子和善女人,即使已經造作了五逆等重罪,聽聞此法門,如果能夠書寫、受持、讀誦、解說,或者勸他人書寫、受持、讀誦以及解說,我見此人不會墮入惡道。此人所有的一切煩惱障、業障、報障,都能夠得到清凈。此人來世將具足五眼(肉眼、天眼、慧眼、法眼、佛眼),此人將被一切諸佛共同灌頂,此人將被諸佛世尊以及諸菩薩所護念,此人來世無論生在何處,都將具足各種根器,沒有殘缺。

佛陀說完這部經后,勝思惟菩薩摩訶薩(殊勝的勝,思考的思,思維的惟,菩薩為「菩提薩埵」的簡稱,摩訶薩為「摩訶薩埵」的簡稱,都是對大菩薩的尊稱)等,以及各位比丘(佛教出家男眾),天龍八部(佛教中的護法神,包括天眾、龍眾、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿修羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩睺羅伽),聽聞佛陀所說,都非常歡喜,深信並奉行。

《大乘遍照光明藏無字法門經》

【English Translation】 English version: If there are good men and good women who, even having committed heinous sins such as the five rebellious acts, upon hearing this Dharma gate, if they can write, uphold, read, recite, explain, or encourage others to write, uphold, read, recite, and explain, I see that this person will not fall into evil realms. All of this person's afflictive obstructions, karmic obstructions, and retributive obstructions will be purified. This person will possess the five eyes (flesh eye, heavenly eye, wisdom eye, Dharma eye, Buddha eye) in future lives. This person will be jointly crowned by all Buddhas. This person will be protected and念 by all Buddhas, World Honored Ones, and Bodhisattvas. This person, wherever they are born in future lives, will be complete with all faculties, without any deficiencies.

After the Buddha finished speaking this Sutra, the Great Bodhisattva Surpassing Thought (Sheng Siwei Pusa Mohesa - Surpassing Thought Bodhisattva Mahasattva), along with all the Bhikshus (Buddhist monks), the Eight Classes of Gods and Dragons (Tianlong Babu - deities and demigods in Buddhism, including Devas, Nagas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Asuras, Garudas, Kinnaras, and Mahoragas), hearing what the Buddha had said, were all greatly rejoiced, believed, accepted, and practiced it.
