Thus have I heard:
At one time, the World-Honored One was in the Ghosilarama (Ghosilarama: Ghosila Grove) in Kauśāmbī (Kauśāmbī: an ancient Indian city). At that time, there was a great venerable one named Cunda (Cunda: name of a venerable monk), who came to the place where the Buddha was. Having arrived, he paid homage, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, stood to one side, and said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! Can endless merit still be obtained? I wish the World-Honored One would explain it to me in detail.'
At that time, the World-Honored One said to the great venerable Cunda: 'Excellent! Excellent! You are able to ask the Tathagata about endless merit. Now listen carefully, and I will explain it to you. Cunda! This endless merit is very profound and subtle, and its name is widely known. If a person sincerely turns to it, they will obtain great rewards. And this merit is of seven kinds, its fame is universal, very deep and vast. If a good man or good woman, with a sincere heart, can fulfill these dharmas, that person, in the four kinds of deportment (walking, standing, sitting, and lying down), will constantly increase endless merit, and the merit increased will be inconceivable and immeasurable. What are the seven?'
'Cunda! If there is a good man or good woman who, with great faith, donates gardens, forests, ponds, and marshes, providing for the Sangha from all directions to walk, practice, and rest. Cunda! This is the first kind of endless merit, with great rewards, receiving great praise, its fame is universal, very deep and vast. If a good man or good woman can fulfill this dharma, that person, in the four kinds of deportment, will constantly increase endless merit, and the merit increased will be inconceivable and immeasurable.'
'Furthermore, Cunda! If there is a good man or good woman who, with great faith, establishes monasteries in those forests, allowing the Sangha to dwell in peace. Cunda! This is the second kind of endless merit, with great rewards, even to the extent that its fame is universal, very deep and vast. If a good man or good woman can fulfill this dharma, that person, in the four kinds of deportment,

『Furthermore, Cunda (name of a person)! If there are good men and good women who generate great faith, and upon seeing the frost and snow severely congealed, the wind and rain cold, they are then able to prepare various foods, medicines, bedding, clothing, shoes, and so on, and provide offerings to the Sangha. In this way, the Sangha will not be invaded by wind and rain, nor suffer from the cold, and will receive great joy from these offerings. Cunda! This is the seventh inexhaustible merit, with great karmic rewards, even to the extent that the reputation spreads widely and deeply. If good men and good women, with sincere hearts, are able to fully practice this Dharma, then such a person will constantly increase inexhaustible merit in the four dignities (walking, standing, sitting, and lying down), and the merit increased will be inconceivable and immeasurable.』
『Cunda! Like these seven kinds of inexhaustible meritorious Dharmas, if there are good men and good women who, with sincere hearts, fully practice these Dharmas, the inexhaustible merit they obtain will be inconceivable and immeasurable, and the merit will be very great, called a great accumulation of merit. Cunda! For example, the five great rivers constantly flow with their water, namely: the Ganga River (Ganga, the Ganges), the Yamuna River (Yamuna, the Yamuna), the Sarayu River (Sarayu, the Sarayu), the Iravati River (Iravati, the Irrawaddy River), and the Mahi River (Mahi, the Mahi River). And this river water cannot be measured, even if hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands, or hundreds of millions of vessels are used to hold the water, the amount of water is still very large, called a water accumulation; inexhaustible merit is also like this!』
『Cunda! If these seven kinds of inexhaustible meritorious Dharmas are all fully practiced, the merit obtained by these good men and good women will be inconceivable and immeasurable, with great fame and great karmic rewards, and the merit will be very great, called a great accumulation of merit.』
At that time, the great Venerable Cunda again said to the Buddha: 『World Honored One! If a person fully practices this inexhaustible merit, truly and without falsehood, will they obtain great karmic rewards, have great praise, and have a reputation that spreads widely and deeply?』
The Buddha told the great Venerable Cunda: 『As you say, one will indeed obtain this inexhaustible merit, and the karmic rewards will be like this!』

【English Translation】 English version 『Cunda! These are the seven kinds of inexhaustible meritorious dharmas. If a good man or good woman can possess these dharmas, the merits they obtain are immeasurable. Cunda! These seven kinds of inexhaustible meritorious dharmas, if a good man or good woman, with sincere heart, can possess these dharmas, the inexhaustible merits they obtain are immeasurable. Such merits, fame and praise, and great rewards, are very numerous, and are called a great accumulation of merit.』 『Furthermore, Cunda! For example, there are five great rivers that constantly flow, namely: the Ganga River (Ganges River), the Yamuna River (Yamuna River), the Sarayu River (Sarayu River), the Iravati River (Iravati River), and the Mahi River (Mahi River). These river waters are immeasurable, like these river waters, even using water-holding vessels, hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands, billions, the water is very much, called an accumulation of water; inexhaustible merit is also like this!』 『Cunda! If a good man or good woman fully possesses these seven kinds of inexhaustible meritorious dharmas, the merits they obtain are inconceivable and immeasurable, possessing great fame and great rewards, the merits are very numerous, and are called a great accumulation of merit.』 At that time, the World Honored One spoke this verse: 『Purely cultivate the practice of dhyana, only cultivate in the sacred sites; collecting treasures is no greater than the sea, like a river saving sentient beings. The river water has no boundaries, the many streams eventually return to the source; giving alms can obtain much blessings, like a river constantly flowing to the sea.』 At that time, the great Venerable Cunda, having heard what the Buddha said, joyfully bowed, accepted it with faith, and practiced accordingly.
