佛言：

昔有一大富長者名樹提伽，倉庫盈實金銀具足，奴婢成行無所乏少。

有一白㲲手巾掛著池邊，遇天風起吹王殿前。王即大會群臣坐共參論，羅列卜問怪其所以，諸臣皆言：「國將欲大興，天賜白㲲。」唯樹提伽默然無言。王問樹提伽：「諸臣皆喜，卿何以無言？」提伽答言：「不敢欺王！是臣家拭體之巾，掛著池邊，遇天風起吹王殿前。以是之故，默然無言。」

卻後數日，有一九色金華大如車輪，遇天風起吹王殿前。王即大會群臣坐共參論，羅列卜問怪其所以。諸臣皆言：「國將欲大興，天賜金華。」臣樹提伽默然無言。王問樹提伽：「諸臣皆喜，卿何以無言？」提伽答言：「不敢欺王！是臣家後園中萎落之華，遇天風起吹王殿前。以是之故，默然無言。」

王問提伽：「卿家乃爾。速作排程，吾欲將領二十萬眾到卿家看望。」樹提伽答言：「愿王相隨至臣之家，臣有自然牀蓆不須人布，自然飲食不須人作，自然擎來不須喚呼，自然擎去不須反顧。」

王即將領二十萬眾，到樹提伽家游看。南門直入，門中有一童子，

過了幾天，有一朵九色金花，大如車輪，被風吹到了國王的宮殿前。國王召集大臣們一起商議，占卜詢問這件事的原因。大臣們都說：『國家將要興盛，這是上天賜予的金花。』只有樹提伽（Śreṇika）沉默不語。國王問樹提伽（Śreṇika）：『大臣們都很高興，你為什麼不說話？』樹提伽（Śreṇika）回答說：『不敢欺騙大王！這是我家後花園里凋落的花，被風吹到了大王您的宮殿前。因為這個緣故，我才沉默不語。』

國王問樹提伽（Śreṇika）：『你家竟然如此富有！快做準備，我打算帶領二十萬士兵到你家去看看。』樹提伽（Śreṇika）回答說：『希望大王能到我家來，我家有天然的床鋪，不需要人來鋪設；有天然的飲食，不需要人來烹飪；食物自然出現，不需要呼喚；食物自然消失，不需要回頭看。』

國王就帶領二十萬士兵，到樹提伽（Śreṇika）家參觀。從南門直接進入，門中有一個童子，

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Śreṇika Sūtra

Translated by Tripiṭaka Guṇabhadra of the Song Dynasty from the Kingdom of Khotan

The Buddha said:

In the past, there was a very wealthy elder named Śreṇika (樹提伽), whose storehouses were filled with gold and silver, and who had rows of servants, lacking nothing.

One day, a white linen towel was hanging by the side of a pond, and a wind blew it in front of the king's palace. The king gathered his ministers to discuss the matter, consulting diviners to inquire into the reason for this. The ministers all said, 'The country is about to prosper greatly; heaven has bestowed a white towel.' Only Śreṇika (樹提伽) remained silent. The king asked Śreṇika (樹提伽), 'The ministers are all pleased; why do you remain silent?' Śreṇika (樹提伽) replied, 'I dare not deceive the king! This is my household's towel for wiping the body, hanging by the side of the pond, and a wind blew it in front of your majesty's palace. For this reason, I remain silent.'

Several days later, a nine-colored golden flower, as large as a cartwheel, was blown by the wind in front of the king's palace. The king gathered his ministers to discuss the matter, consulting diviners to inquire into the reason for this. The ministers all said, 'The country is about to prosper greatly; heaven has bestowed a golden flower.' Only Śreṇika (樹提伽) remained silent. The king asked Śreṇika (樹提伽), 'The ministers are all pleased; why do you remain silent?' Śreṇika (樹提伽) replied, 'I dare not deceive the king! This is a withered flower from my household's back garden, blown by the wind in front of your majesty's palace. For this reason, I remain silent.'

The king asked Śreṇika (樹提伽), 'Your household is so wealthy! Quickly make preparations, for I intend to lead two hundred thousand troops to visit your home.' Śreṇika (樹提伽) replied, 'I wish that your majesty would come to my home. My home has natural beds and seats that do not need to be arranged by people; natural food and drink that do not need to be prepared by people; food that appears naturally, without needing to be summoned; and food that disappears naturally, without needing to be looked back upon.'

The king then led two hundred thousand troops to visit Śreṇika's (樹提伽) home. Entering directly through the south gate, there was a boy in the gate,

顏容端正，肉色瑤悅，甚復可愛。王問樹提伽：「是卿家兒孫耶？」提伽答言：「不敢欺王！是臣家守門之奴。」

小復前進到其中門，有一童女，顏容端正，肉色瑤悅，甚復可愛。王問樹提伽：「是卿家婦女耶？」提伽答言：「不敢欺王！是臣家守合之婢。」

小復前進到其戶內，白銀為壁，水精為地，王呼水流疑不得進，樹提伽即導王前而入，黃金為床，白玉為機，樹提伽婦有百二十重金銀幃帳。樹提伽婦端正無雙，為王作禮眼中淚出。王問提伽：「卿婦見我，有何不㤿，眼中淚出？」提伽答言：「不敢欺王！聞王煙氣，以是之故，眼中淚出。」王言：「庶人然脂，諸侯然蠟，天子然漆，亦無煙也，何得淚出？」提伽答言：「不敢欺王！是臣之家有一明月神珠掛著殿堂，晝夜無異，不須火光，王是煙中之王，是故聞氣耳。」

樹提伽家堂前有十二重高樓，將王上頭，視東忘西，視南忘北，奄奄忽忽以經一月。大臣白言：「國計事大，事須還歸，斷理人民。」王謂：「須臾，小復可忍。」

樹提伽將王后園中游看，流泉浴池中沐浴，食果自適，甘美無比，甚復可愛，以至一月。大臣白王：「可須還國，國計事大，斷理人民。」王謂：「吁！須臾，小復可忍。」樹提伽即佈施金銀珍寶、綾羅

The king asked Suddhika (Suddhika, a name): 'Is this your family's descendant?' Suddhika replied: 'I dare not deceive the king! She is a slave who guards the gate of my house.' The king advanced a little further to the middle gate, where there was a young girl, her appearance dignified, her complexion fair and radiant, exceedingly lovely. The king asked Suddhika: 'Is this a woman of your household?' Suddhika replied: 'I dare not deceive the king! She is a maid who guards the gate of my house.' The king advanced a little further into his house, (where he saw) silver walls and crystal floors. The king, fearing the flowing water, hesitated to enter, but Suddhika guided the king forward. There were golden beds and jade tables, and Suddhika's wife had one hundred and twenty layers of gold and silver curtains. Suddhika's wife was dignified and beautiful, unparalleled in the world. As she paid her respects to the king, tears flowed from her eyes. The king asked Suddhika: 'What displeases your wife about seeing me, that tears flow from her eyes?' Suddhika replied: 'I dare not deceive the king! (She) smelled the smoke from the king, and for that reason, tears flowed from her eyes.' The king said: 'Commoners burn oil, nobles burn wax, and the Son of Heaven burns lacquer, but there is no smoke. How could she shed tears?' Suddhika replied: 'I dare not deceive the king! In my house, there is a bright moon pearl hanging in the hall, so that day and night are no different, and there is no need for firelight. The king is a king of smoke, so (she) smelled the odor.' In front of Suddhika's house were twelve high towers. (The king) ascended to the top of the tower, and when he looked east, he forgot the west, and when he looked south, he forgot the north, and he passed a month in a daze. The ministers reported: 'The affairs of the state are important, and you must return to the country to manage the affairs of the people.' The king said: 'In a little while, bear with it a little longer.' Suddhika took the king to tour and view the back garden, bathed in the flowing spring pool, ate fruit, and felt comfortable and content, sweet and beautiful beyond compare, exceedingly delightful, and so a month passed. The ministers reported to the king: 'You should return to the country, the affairs of the state are important, and you must manage the affairs of the people.' The king said: 'Alas! In a little while, bear with it a little longer.' Suddhika then gave away gold, silver, jewels, fine silks and satins.

繒彩，二十萬眾人馬車乘一時俱重還國。

王即會群臣坐共參論，羅列卜問怪其所以：「樹提伽是我之臣，婦女舍宅過甚於我。我欲伐之，可取與不？」諸臣皆言：「宜可取之。」王即興四十萬眾，捶鐘鳴鼓，往圍樹提伽舍數百餘重。

樹提伽家門中，有一力士，手捉金杖一擬，四十萬眾一時俱倒，手腳繚戾，尻髖妸婆，狀似醉容，搖頭頗𩒰，臥地不起。樹提伽乘飛雲輪，車在虛空中問諸人等：「來時何意，臥地不起？」諸人答樹提伽言：「國王遣我來，欲伐長者。長者門中有一力士，手捉金杖一擬我等，四十萬眾一時俱倒，臥地不能起。」樹提伽問之曰：「欲得起不？」諸人皆言：「我欲得起。」樹提伽放大神目一視，四十萬眾一時俱起，還其本國。

王即遣使者喚樹提伽，樹提伽與王同車，而共載之，往至佛所，問言：「世尊！樹提伽是我之臣，前身有何功德，婦女舍宅過甚於我？」

佛言：「樹提伽佈施功德，現天上受樂。昔五百商主將諸商人，赍持重寶經過險路，奔空山中，走逢一病道人，給其草屋厚敷床褥，給其水漿鎢錥米糧，給其燈燭，於時乞愿天堂之報，今得果報。」

佛言：「是時佈施者，今樹提伽夫婦是也；於時病道人者，今我身是也；五百商主及商人者，皆得阿

佛陀說：『樹提伽佈施的功德，現在在天上享受快樂。過去有五百個商隊首領帶領商人，攜帶貴重的財寶經過危險的道路，逃到空曠的山中，遇到一個生病的道人，給他們提供草屋，鋪上厚厚的床墊，給他們提供水、飲料、米糧，給他們提供燈燭，當時乞求得到天堂的報應，現在得到了果報。』

【English Translation】 Zengcai (a type of silk fabric), two hundred thousand soldiers and chariots simultaneously returned to their respective countries.

The king summoned his ministers to discuss the matter, divining and questioning the reason for this, saying: 'Suddhipa (Suddhipa, a name meaning 'purity') is my subject, and his wives and residences exceed mine. I want to attack him, can I take him?' The ministers all said: 'It is appropriate to take him.' The king then raised an army of four hundred thousand, beating drums and bells, and went to surround Suddhipa's hundreds of residences.

In Suddhipa's house, there was a strongman who, with a wave of his golden staff, caused the four hundred thousand soldiers to fall to the ground at once, their hands and feet entangled, their buttocks and thighs twisted, looking like they were drunk, shaking their heads and unable to get up. Suddhipa rode a flying cloud chariot and asked the people in the air: 'What was your intention when you came, and why are you lying on the ground unable to get up?' The people replied to Suddhipa: 'The king sent us to attack the elder (referring to Suddhipa). In the elder's house, there is a strongman who waved a golden staff at us, and the four hundred thousand soldiers all fell to the ground at once, unable to get up.' Suddhipa asked them: 'Do you want to get up?' The people all said: 'We want to get up.' Suddhipa released a great divine light, and the four hundred thousand soldiers all got up at once and returned to their respective countries.

The king then sent a messenger to summon Suddhipa. Suddhipa rode in the same chariot with the king and went together to where the Buddha (Buddha, the awakened one) was, and asked: 'Bhagavan (Bhagavan, a respectful term for the Buddha)! Suddhipa is my subject. What merits did he have in his previous life that his wives and residences exceed mine?'

The Buddha said: 'Suddhipa's merits of giving alms are now enjoying happiness in heaven. In the past, five hundred caravan leaders led merchants, carrying precious treasures, passing through dangerous roads, and fleeing into empty mountains, they encountered a sick Taoist, providing them with thatched huts, laying thick mattresses, providing them with water, drinks, rice, and lamps, at that time begging for the reward of heaven, and now they have received the fruit.'

The Buddha said: 'The almsgivers at that time are now Suddhipa and his wife; the sick Taoist at that time was my former body; the five hundred caravan leaders and merchants all attained A'
