'The Abridged Method for Seven Limbed Recitation Following the Mahavairocana Sutra on Becoming a Buddha Through Miraculous Transformation and Adhisthana'

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple, who was granted the title Grand Master of Broad Wisdom, by imperial decree.

I prostrate to the unobstructed wisdom, the mind-born son of the esoteric teachings. Relying on that Sutra (Sutra: a Sanskrit term for scripture), I compile this accompanying practice. The mantra-practicing Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva: a Sanskrit term for an enlightened being), with unattached and unequaled vows. Speech is secret, body is also secret; later, perform the corresponding practice.

The Samaya (Samaya: a Sanskrit term for vow) mantra says:

Namo samanta buddhanam om a sam trisam trisam maye svaha

The mudra (mudra: a symbolic hand gesture) is called aligning all the wheels, closely joining and erecting the two voids. Five places: crown, shoulders, heart, and finally adding the throat position. Next, form the origin of the Dharma Realm, the emblem of secret wisdom. Purify the karma of body, speech, and mind, completely transforming one's body.

The Dharma Realm Origin mantra says:

Namo samanta buddhanam dharmadhatu svabhavatmakam

The Prajna (Prajna: a Sanskrit term for wisdom) Samadhi hand, both making vajra (vajra: a Sanskrit term for diamond/thunderbolt) fists. Pressing together and erecting the wind banner, making them straight and joined together. This is called the Dharma Realm, the pure secret mudra. Like the self-nature of the Dharma Realm, contemplate one's own body. Without defilement, like the empty sky, the power of the mantra and mudra. Next, form the turning of the Dharma wheel, the Vajrasattva (Vajrasattva: a Sanskrit term for diamond being) mudra. 【English Translation】 English version Steadfast The backs of the Samatha-vipassana (止觀) hands face each other, the wheels of earth, water, fire, and wind, support each other left and right, the two voids each rotate, joining within the wisdom palm, named the Most Excellent Dharma Wheel. The Vajrasattva (金剛薩埵, the Bodhisattva symbolizing purity and purification) mantra says: 'Namo samanta vajranam vajra-atmakam' Rightly reciting this secret mantra, one should abide in samadhi (等引), contemplate one's own form, which is Vajradhara (執金剛), the immeasurable great demons, all who see it, like Vajrasattva (金剛薩埵, the Bodhisattva symbolizing purity and purification), do not give rise to doubts, next with the immovable saint, ward off obstacles and remove defilements, and be able to purify all affairs, protection and support accordingly. The Acala (不動尊, wrathful deity in Buddhism) mantra says: 'Namo samanta vajranam canda maharosana sphotaya hum trat ham mam' Samadhi (定) and void add earth and water, wind and fire stand upright at the heart, the wisdom sword is also like this, drawn from its sheath it can accomplish, next with the Tathagata (如來) hook, invite the honored ones and the holy assembly, secret skillful means correspond, according to the original vow they descend. The Tathagata (如來) hook mantra says: 'Namo samanta buddhanam ah sarvatathagatankusa bodhicaryaparipuraka svaha' Samatha-vipassana (止觀) interlock internally, uprightly joining, wisdom and wind stand upright, only bending at the initial part, the remaining wheels are shaped like rings, the power of the saints' compassion and vows, following the invitation they all descend, offering and presenting the Samaya (三昧耶, vow), the clear agreement is as previously said, having presented the original vow day.

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本   決定相應的緣故,接下來應當隨自己的能力來分配,供養以表達誠心。閼伽(Argha,供養水)、香、食物、燈,乃至一朵花、一滴水,或者只是用心意去想像,這種殊勝是難以估量的。應當以普通印(Samanya-mudra)觀想修行,並持誦真言,有形的供養和無形的觀想都包含在內,一切都能成就。

定慧手齊合,右手交疊於左手的上節。用心意使供養普遍周遍,所念之物都顯現在眼前。在施行供養之後,修習常作的持誦。首先披上金剛鎧甲,結界守護與所修之事相應。

金剛甲冑真言曰:

娜莫三(去聲)滿多嚩日啰(二合引)喃(引)嚩日啰(二合)迦嚩左吽(引)

【English Translation】 English version   Due to the corresponding determination, one should then distribute according to one's ability, offering to express sincerity. Argha (offering water), incense, food, and lamps, even a flower or a drop of water, or simply imagining it with the mind, this supreme merit is immeasurable. One should contemplate and practice with the Samanya-mudra (general mudra), along with reciting the mantra, including both tangible offerings and intangible visualizations, everything will be accomplished.

The Samanya-mantra says:

Namah samanta buddhanam sarvatra om udbhavati spharana gagana kham svaha

The hands of Samatha (calm abiding) and Vipassana (insight) are joined together, the right hand overlapping the upper joints of the left. Use the mind to make the offering universally pervasive, and all that is thought of appears before you. After performing the offering, practice the constant recitation. First, don the Vajra armor, and the protective boundary corresponds to the practice.

The Vajra Armor Mantra says:

Namah samanta vajranam vajra kavacaya hum

First, make the hollow-hearted joined palms, with the wind wheel (middle finger) entwining the fire wheel (ring finger), the earth (thumb) and space (index finger) relying on the root of the fire wheel, universally touching the body and then returning to the heart. Next, form the boundaries of the four directions and four corners, using the previous Acala (immovable) mudra. Rotating to the left signifies dispelling, rotating to the right and up and down, completely touching all parts of the body, the protective boundary is very firm. The mantra and mudra have been explained separately as before. Now that preparations are complete, the fundamental mudra should be shown, and then blessed at the five places (forehead, right shoulder, left shoulder, heart, throat), rotating seven times or two or three times, scattering the mudra open on the crown of the head. Sit in the half-lotus position, with upright body and mind, or in a corresponding posture, following the directions as taught in the scriptures. Facing forward, visualize a round and bright image in front of you, pure and without flaws, like a full moon. Within the round brightness is the form of the Ishtadevata (personal deity), whose wondrous color transcends the three realms, wearing light gauze clothing, a jeweled crown, and dark blue hair hanging down, silently in Samadhi (meditative absorption), the brilliance of the flames surpassing lightning. Like a clear mirror, deeply revealing the true appearance, joy and anger.

【English Translation】 English version Manifesting forms and colors, holding Mudras (hand gestures) such as the wish-fulfilling Mudra. With a body corresponding to right reception, clearly understanding that the mind is without disturbance. With the formless, pure Dharma body, responding to the vows of sentient beings to deliver all beings. Concentratedly reciting and upholding, when the limited number of recitations is completely finished, Stopping only after extreme fatigue, and then forming the common Mudra again. Sincerely making vows and aspirations, earnestly and respectfully prostrating to the Holy Ones. Turning to the left without any force, releasing the protection previously formed. Then presenting the Mudra back to the original deity (symbol of the fundamental deity), scattering it above the head. Mentally dedicating the merit to the Holy Heavens, performing the five-wheel prostration. Then initiating rejoicing in the good deeds of all, and after the Dharma assembly, returning to the original state. Once, twice, or three times, even four times, doing it in this way. Remaining time can be spent circumambulating stupas, bathing Buddha images, and reciting the Mahayana scriptures. Painting and decorating the Mandala (sacred diagram), scattering flowers to praise the virtues of the Buddha. Or without any distracting thoughts, focusing on Samadhi (meditative absorption). The Vidyadhara (knowledge holder) transmits the fundamental teachings, without transgressing the Samaya (vows). Diligently encourage continuous practice, staying away from dullness and intoxication. Following and practicing all the precepts, Siddhi (accomplishment) will be achieved according to one's ability.
