三藏沙門大廣智不空奉　詔解釋

如來於百千俱胝阿　僧祇劫。積集菩提資糧加持陀羅尼真言文字。令頓悟菩薩與此相應。頓集福德智慧資糧。于大乘修菩薩道二種修行。證無上菩提道。所謂依諸波羅蜜修行成佛。依真言陀羅尼三密門修行成佛。陀羅尼者梵語。唐翻名為總持義。有四種持。法持義持三摩地持文持。此四種持。多依顯教大乘教中所說也。法持者由得此持。摧滅一切雜染之法。證得清凈法界等流教法。義持者由得此持。於一字義中悟百千無量修多羅行。演說逆順自在。三摩地持者由此持故。必不散動三昧現前。悟無量百千三摩地門。悲增菩薩。故於六趣以愿受生。不被煩惱隨煩惱壞其三昧。由此三摩地證五神通。成就利樂無邊有情。文持者由此受持陀羅尼成就所聞。所謂一切契經。於一切如來諸菩薩所。聞百千無量修多羅永不忘失。其真言亦具四義。真者真如相應。言者真詮義。四義者。法真言。清凈法界以為真言。義真言者勝義相應。一一字中有實相義。三摩地真言者。由瑜伽者用此真言。於心鏡智月輪上佈列真言文字。專注心不散動。速疾證三摩地故名三摩地真言。文持真

【English Translation】 English version The Eulogy on the Meaning of the Dharani, Extensively Explained

Tripitaka Śramaṇa Da Guang Zhi Bukong (Great Wisdom, Not Empty) received the imperial order to explain.

The Tathagata, over hundreds of thousands of kotis of asamkhya kalpas (countless eons), accumulated the resources for Bodhi (enlightenment), and blessed the Dharani (mantra) and its written words, enabling Bodhisattvas who attain sudden enlightenment to resonate with it, and to quickly accumulate resources of merit and wisdom. In the Mahayana (Great Vehicle), there are two practices for cultivating the Bodhisattva path, leading to the attainment of unsurpassed Bodhi: one is to achieve Buddhahood by relying on the Paramitas (perfections), and the other is to achieve Buddhahood by relying on the three secrets of mantra and Dharani. Dharani is a Sanskrit term, translated into Chinese as 'Zong Chi', meaning 'total retention'. There are four types of retention: Dharma retention, meaning retention, Samadhi retention, and text retention. These four types of retention are mostly discussed in the exoteric Mahayana teachings. Dharma retention means that by obtaining this retention, one destroys all defiled dharmas and attains the pure Dharma realm and its flowing teachings. Meaning retention means that by obtaining this retention, one comprehends hundreds of thousands of immeasurable Sutra (scripture) practices within the meaning of a single word, and can expound them freely in both direct and reverse order. Samadhi retention means that by virtue of this retention, one is certain not to be distracted, Samadhi (meditative absorption) manifests, and one comprehends countless hundreds of thousands of Samadhi gates. Due to increased compassion, Bodhisattvas willingly take birth in the six realms, without allowing afflictions or secondary afflictions to destroy their Samadhi. Through this Samadhi, one attains the five supernormal powers, accomplishing the benefit and happiness of limitless sentient beings. Text retention means that by upholding and reciting the Dharani, one achieves complete retention of what is heard, namely all the sutras, and never forgets the hundreds of thousands of immeasurable Sutras heard from all the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas. The mantra also possesses four meanings: 'Truth' corresponds to Suchness (true nature); 'Word' conveys the meaning of truth. The four meanings are: Dharma mantra, taking the pure Dharma realm as the mantra; meaning mantra, corresponding to the ultimate meaning, with each word containing the meaning of reality; Samadhi mantra, where the yogi uses this mantra to arrange the written words of the mantra on the moon disc of the mind-mirror wisdom, focusing the mind without distraction, quickly attaining Samadhi, hence the name Samadhi mantra; text retention of truth.

言者從唵字至娑嚩賀。于其中間所有文字。一一字皆名為真言。亦云密言。亦具有四義。法密言者。非法外道及二乘境界。唯修真言行菩薩。所聞所持軌則印契曼荼羅。修行所求悉地名法密言。義密言者。真言中一一字。唯佛與佛大威德菩薩乃能究盡。三摩地密言者。由此中真言文字三摩地相應威力。遍佈真言者身支分。變粗重身易得微妙色身。獲得五神通威德自在壽量無盡。聞持密言者。從師密受三密軌則。唯師及弟子自知。非令餘人之所知也。乃至本尊形像印契觀門。皆密受持。獲得心所悕望三摩地聞持不忘天眼天耳他心上中下悉地亦名為明。具四義。法明者。修行者稱誦一一字中光明。遍照十方世界。一切有情沉溺生死苦海。皆破無明煩惱。悉得離苦解脫故名法明。義明者。由瑜伽者與真言義相應故。通達明瞭般若波羅蜜。遠離無義道理。三摩地明者。由真言種子想於心月輪中。獲得大光明作自他照明三摩地成就。聞持明者。證得聞持法。能破廢忘之惑。證得菩提心成就。

【English Translation】 English version: The speech begins from the syllable 『Om』 (the primordial sound of the universe) and ends with 『Svaha』 (offering, accomplishment). All the words in between, each and every syllable, are called mantra, also called secret words, and possess four meanings. Dharma-secret words refer to that which is not the realm of externalists and the two vehicles (Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha), only Bodhisattvas who practice mantra can hear and uphold the rules, mudras (hand seals), and mandalas (sacred diagrams). The siddhi (accomplishment) attained through practice is called Dharma-secret words. Meaning-secret words refer to each syllable in the mantra, which only Buddhas and Buddhas, as well as Bodhisattvas with great power and virtue, can fully understand. Samadhi-secret words refer to the power of the mantra syllables corresponding to samadhi, pervading the body and limbs of the mantra practitioner, making it easy to transform the coarse body into a subtle form, obtaining the five supernormal powers, majestic virtue, freedom, and endless lifespan. Hearing-retention secret words refer to secretly receiving the rules of body, speech, and mind from the guru, which only the guru and disciple know, and not allowing others to know. Even the form, mudra, and visualization methods of the principal deity are secretly received and upheld. Obtaining the desired samadhi in the heart, hearing-retention without forgetting, the upper, middle, and lower siddhis of the divine eye, divine ear, and mind-reading are also called 『illumination,』 possessing four meanings. Dharma-illumination refers to the light from each syllable chanted by the practitioner, illuminating the ten directions of the world, so that all sentient beings drowning in the sea of suffering of birth and death can break through ignorance and afflictions, and all attain liberation from suffering, hence it is called Dharma-illumination. Meaning-illumination refers to the yogi corresponding to the meaning of the mantra, thoroughly understanding Prajñāpāramitā (perfection of wisdom), and staying away from meaningless doctrines. Samadhi-illumination refers to visualizing the seed syllable of the mantra in the moon disc of the heart, obtaining great light, using it to illuminate oneself and others, and achieving samadhi. Hearing-retention illumination refers to attaining the hearing-retention Dharma, being able to break through the delusion of forgetfulness, and attaining the accomplishment of Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment). The above meanings of Dharani (total retention), mantra, secret words, and illumination are based on Sanskrit. They are also mentioned in the exoteric Sutras (scriptures), or these four terms are mentioned in the esoteric teachings of mantra. Or there is a one-syllable mantra, or two syllables, three syllables, or hundreds of syllables, thousands of syllables, tens of thousands of syllables, or even more than this number, even immeasurable and boundless, all are called Dharani, mantra, secret words, and illumination. If corresponding to the three secrets of body, speech, and mind, without spending many kalpas (eons) of difficult ascetic practices, one can transform fixed karma and quickly attain accomplishment.
