【English Translation】 English version T18 No. 0916 Text on Receiving the Five Precepts and Eight Precepts No. 916 Text on Receiving the Five Precepts and Eight Precepts Text on the Eight Precepts First Chapter: Prostrating and Requesting Certification We, the disciples, prostrate and pay homage to the unsurpassed wisdom of the Dharma Realm of Empty Space. To those who embody form and discipline themselves to achieve perfect enlightenment. To the Mahāprajñā (Great Wisdom) and the expansive One Vehicle. To the Ten Stages of Holy Beings and the Great Worthies of the Three Grades. To the visible and invisible deities of empty space, the various gods in charge. To the Brahma (Brahma, the creator god) retinue of the realms of form and formlessness. To the World-Protecting Śakra (Śakra, king of the gods) and the assisting officials. To the administrators of the netherworld and Lord Yama (Yama, the lord of death). We sincerely hope that today, with pure heavenly eyes, you will see all of us. With reverence and sincerity, we single-mindedly invite you. Second Chapter: Washing Away Past Karma through Repentance We, the disciples and members of this sacred site, from beginningless time until today, have accumulated immeasurable sins, difficult to fathom their boundaries. We have created transgressions life after life, rarely reaching their end. We have arisen disbelief in the Three Jewels. We have engaged in non-pure conduct towards the honored ones of the ten directions. We have indulged our bodies in killing, stealing, and improper conduct. We have indulged our mouths in false speech, embellished language, and malicious cursing. We have indulged our minds in greed, hatred, and ignorance. From this, we have broadly generated boundless evil karma. We have circulated through the three realms and drowned in the four streams. The five hindrances cover our minds, and the ten fetters delude our nature. We have long resided in the ordinary state, with no hope of liberation. The Sanskrit term 'Kṣamā' (Kṣamā) means repentance. From now on, we will sever the mind of continuity. May all past sins be completely eradicated. Third Chapter: Obtaining the Precepts and Taking the Three Refuges We, the disciples and members of this sacred site, take refuge in the Buddha, the Honored One with two feet. We take refuge in the Dharma, the Honored One free from desire. We take refuge in the Sangha, the Honored One among the assembly. We sincerely hope that the Three Jewels will compassionately certify, have pity, and accept us (said three times). We, the disciples and members of this sacred site, have taken refuge in the Buddha. We have taken refuge in the Dharma. We have taken refuge in the Sangha. I receive the Eight Precepts, the precepts of a lay practitioner. May the Honored Ones remember, uphold, and compassionately protect us (said three times). Fourth Chapter: Asking about Upholding and Explaining the Precepts All you children of the Buddha, listen carefully. The Eight Precepts are as follows: first, not to kill; second, not to steal; third, not to engage in unchaste conduct; fourth, not to lie; fifth, not to drink alcohol or eat meat; sixth, not to use fragrant
【English Translation】 English version: Applying oil to the body and wearing garlands and ornaments. Seven, not going to watch singing, dancing, and musical performances. Eight, not sleeping on high and large beds and not eating at improper times. From now until tomorrow morning, I will follow the Buddha as a renunciate for one day and one night. I must not violate these precepts during this time. Can you uphold them?
Chapter Five: Dedication and Aspiration
We, the disciples and all those in this Dharma assembly, dedicate all the merits of receiving these precepts to all sentient beings in the Dharma realm. May deluded attachments and emotions subside, and may the obstacles of ignorance be completely eliminated. May the wisdom of non-discrimination clearly manifest before us. May the practice of the path with characteristics be vigorously cultivated. May we travel and roam throughout the Hua-Zang World (Avatamsaka Sutra's description of the cosmos). May the Tathagata-garbha (Buddha-nature) mind deeply accord with the fundamental principle. May those who have not attained enlightenment attain it, and may those who are not yet complete become complete. May all beings in the ocean of sentient beings achieve Buddhahood.
The Text of the Five Precepts
All ordinary beings are deluded about their inherent enlightened nature. They transmigrate according to delusion, dwelling in the three realms of existence (desire realm, form realm, formless realm). Thus, the six paths are differentiated, and humans and devas are separated. The Buddha established the five precepts for people to uphold, entering the principle of true reality from the gate of skillful means.
Chapter One: Sincerely Requesting
We, the disciples and all those in this Dharma assembly, respectfully request those who have attained perfect enlightenment, those who turn the Dharma wheel, and those who have entered parinirvana in the ten directions of the Dharma realm of empty space. They are our true and good teachers, the great physician king, who accept us. The boundless Dharma treasury, the single flavor of amrita (divine nectar), the complete and perfect Mahayana teachings, are our good medicine, our boat, to deliver us across the river of birth and death. The holy assembly of the three vehicles, the eight classes of bhikshus (monks), the shravakas (listeners) who strive for tranquility, and the bodhisattvas who have cut off compassion, have compassion for us, protecting us as if caring for the sick. We only wish that the great vows and inconceivable power of the Three Jewels will arise from the unconditioned compassion within our true nature, and that they will accept our request at this time.
Chapter Two: Repenting of Past Sins
We, the disciples and all those in this Dharma assembly, have been foolish and deluded since beginningless kalpas until today. Because we do not understand the first principle, we generate various obstacles, the afflictions and the obstacles of knowledge, being deluded about phenomena and principles. When encountering circumstances, we generate karma, and according to conditions, we create transgressions. The body generates three evil deeds, the mouth commits four faults, and the three evil deeds of the mind become increasingly deep. Like sand and dust, their number is immeasurable. We are unaware that our body is like a box containing four poisonous snakes, like five Chandalas (outcasts), like the empty gathering of the six entrances (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind), accepting false kindness, many.
【English Translation】 English version Evil karmic conditions. Driving the conscious mind to circulate through the five realms (hell, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, humans). From this, accumulating the eighty-four thousand transgressions of the human world, creating every kind of evil. Starting from today, examining body and mind, confessing before the Buddha, hoping to eliminate all these sins.
Chapter 3: Turning from Evil, Returning to Reverence
Disciples and all those in this Dharma assembly, take refuge in the Buddha, the unsurpassed venerable one. Take refuge in the Dharma, the venerable one free from desires. Take refuge in the Sangha, the venerable one among the assembly. From today onwards, taking the Buddha as my teacher, I will no longer take refuge in other demons or heretical paths. I only wish that the Three Jewels, with compassion, will bear witness, have pity, and accept me (said three times).
Disciples and all those in this Dharma assembly, have completed taking refuge in the Buddha. Have completed taking refuge in the Dharma. Have completed taking refuge in the Sangha. This Buddha, Bhagavan (Bhagavan, The World-Honored One), Tathagata (Tathagata, Thus Come One), Arhat (Arhat, One Worthy of Offerings), Samyaksambuddha (Samyaksambuddha, Perfectly Enlightened One), is my great teacher. I now take refuge, wishing that the Buddha will accept me (said three times).
Chapter 4: Explaining the Characteristics and Practicing Together
Buddha's disciples, listen carefully. The precepts of a upasaka (upasaka, a male lay Buddhist) are as follows: first, not to kill. Second, not to steal. Third, not to engage in sexual misconduct. Fourth, not to lie. Fifth, not to drink alcohol or eat meat. From this time forward until the end of the future, one must not violate these precepts. Can you uphold them?
Chapter 5: Dedication to the Ocean of Vows
Disciples and all those in this Dharma assembly, dedicate the merit of receiving the precepts to the Bodhi (bodhi, enlightenment), the true nature of the sea. May all sentient beings in the four births (born from the womb, born from eggs, born from moisture, born by transformation) and the three realms (realm of desire, realm of form, realm of formlessness), all generate the Bodhi mind and cultivate the practice of Samantabhadra. May we not sever the seed of Buddhahood and be born into the family of the Tathagata. Furthermore, may we spread and reveal great compassion, obtain the jewel in the topknot, and find the pearl in the clothing. When sitting in the Bodhi-mandala, may we all attain Buddhahood.
