【English Translation】 English version The Nian Song Yi Gui (Recitation Ritual) of the Sutra of the Merits of the Fundamental Vows of the Seven Buddhas, the King of Lapis Lazuli Light - Volume 1

Namo Bhaisajya-guru-vaidurya-prabha-raja-tathagata (Homage to the Medicine Buddha, the King of Lapis Lazuli Light).

Those who practice this ritual should bathe and purify themselves. They should wear fresh and exquisite clothes and eat pure food. They should stay away from afflictions and maintain a pure and undefiled mind. They should contemplate and remember the merits of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and the merits of this sutra. They should generate true faith and cultivate the Four Immeasurable Minds (loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity). If they are lay practitioners, they should uphold the Eight Precepts. On auspicious days, such as the eighth day of the month, they should begin to establish the mandala, sweeping and cleaning the suitable place. They should solemnly set up various banners, canopies, and parasols. They should use various powders or arrange flower positions to build a large incense altar. Within the altar, they should place cast, painted, or sculpted images of Sariputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples). And they should set up positions for all the venerable ones, sages, and worthies of the mundane and supramundane realms. They should arrange various offerings according to their ability. They should place seven lamps in front of each image. They should hang seven banners of various colors. And they should offer various superior incenses, precious flowers, scented oils, and delicious foods. Various musical instruments, the Seven Treasures, the Eight Auspicious Symbols, virtuous vases, etc., should all be prepared in advance according to their ability. They should invite monks to recite this sutra, the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra, the Vaipulya Sutra, etc. Or for seven days, twenty-one days, thirty-five days, or even forty-nine days. They should build the mandala and practice recitation and cultivation. After these offerings have been arranged. They should gather the assembly and seat them in order and peacefully. They should cultivate the contemplation of emptiness and arise from samadhi. They should contemplate all sentient beings and cultivate the Four Immeasurable Minds. After generating the Bodhicitta, they should contemplate that all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions are also doing the same. They should receive their blessings and protection. Thus, contemplating the place of blessing and protection, they say: By the true power of the Three Jewels. By the power of the blessings and protection of all Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas. By the power of the perfect fruition of the two accumulations (accumulation of merit and accumulation of wisdom). By the power of the inconceivable pure Dharma realm. Relying on the pure land accomplished by the most wonderful and vast vows of those Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. 【English Translation】 English version All Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, the holy assembly of Dharma protectors, palaces, altars, and all offerings and adorned lands, I vow that they be transformed into the adorned lands of the World-Honored One Amitābha (Amitābha, Infinite Light Buddha), with all merits equal and without difference. That Buddha-land is as flat as the palm of a hand, made of various treasures, vast and adorned, exquisitely smooth and soft, and exceedingly delightful. It is pure and without defilement, its light shines brightly, and its fragrance is like that of exquisite sandalwood. Various supreme celestial flowers are scattered everywhere. There are many bathing ponds, adorned all around with various exquisite jewels, and their bottoms are covered with sands of various gold, silver, pearl, and exquisite jewels. There are also various utpala (blue lotus), kumuda (red lotus), and padma (white lotus) flowers, blooming beautifully and covering the ponds. There are also various wonderful and lovely birds of mixed colors, uttering harmonious and elegant sounds that please the minds of all. They joyfully gather and fly up and down. Furthermore, various subtle celestial treasures adorn the ponds, which are filled with the flowing waters of the eight qualities. They are pure, adorned, and exceedingly delightful. There are also various wonderful celestial jeweled trees, each bearing various jeweled flowers and fruits, flourishing and adorned with railings, arranged in rows everywhere. On each branch hang various exquisite celestial jeweled necklaces, mani jewels, and golden bells, which sound beautifully without being struck, proclaiming the wonderful Dharma. Such is the land adorned with various treasures, and its magnificent palaces are adorned with the seven treasures, their light blazing and illuminating countless worlds in the ten directions. All lands of the ten directions appear within them. There are countless lands such as these, vast and without difference in their boundaries, each adorned and manifested, not belonging to the realms of the Three Worlds (desire realm, form realm, formless realm), but transcending the world. This is accomplished by the power of the Tathāgata's (Tathāgata, 'Thus Gone One' or Buddha) good roots and the pure nature of consciousness-only (the fundamental principle in Yogācāra). The great Bodhisattvas dwelling with the Tathāgata, the countless assemblies, and the devas (gods), nagas (dragons), yakshas (Yaksa, a type of spirit), gandharvas (Gandharva, celestial musicians), asuras (Asura, demigods), garudas (Garuda, mythical birds), kinnaras (Kinnara, celestial musicians), mahoragas (Mahoraga, great serpents), humans, and non-humans, constantly travel there, delighting in the taste of Dharma, dwelling in peace and happiness, truly and constantly abiding, benefiting sentient beings, free from defilements, sorrow, and suffering, forever without demonic influences, surpassing all adornments. Also, for the benefit and happiness of humans and gods (devas), relying on the skillful means of the Tathagatas, the vast, supreme, and subtle great vows, and the power of divine might. Now, for the sake of us (name) and all sentient beings, to be a refuge, a protector, and a source of strength, we sincerely invite, wishing that the holy assembly will descend upon the Dharma assembly and the fragrant altar, and grant us acceptance. With one mind, we invite our teacher, Sakyamuni Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha), who, for the benefit of sentient beings, manifested the appearance of Nirvana in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, referring to the world we live in), and then went to other places, using the Tathagata's supernatural powers to benefit and bring happiness to sentient beings freely. With utmost sincerity, I invite. Those who in past assemblies, before all the Buddhas, made great vows to the assembly. If there are those who receive, uphold, recite, respectfully venerate, and make offerings to the Sutra of the Fundamental Vows and Merits of the Seven Buddhas Tathagatas, we and our retinue will protect these individuals, enabling them to escape all difficulties and fulfilling all their wishes. Those who vowed to protect are:

At this point, one should recite the invocation verse, thus inviting and visualizing all the sages, each coming from their own land, using their supernatural powers to travel through the air, arriving at the supremely wonderful palace, seating the Eight Tathagatas and placing the Dharma Jewel on jeweled lion lotus thrones. On the second level, place the positions of all the Bodhisattvas in the Introductory Section, or set up the positions of the attendant Bodhisattvas. Furthermore, with the divine power of the great Dharani, sincere faith, and vows, I bless and increase the cloud-like sea of offerings, just like that which arises from the vows of Samantabhadra, filling the void with the cloud-like sea of offerings. With these most supreme offering resources, I offer to all the great sages. I (N.), from beginningless birth and death, all the evil deeds I have committed, and all kinds of good and bad deeds that should or should not have been done, all such sins, I now sincerely repent. All the roots of goodness of the Buddhas of the three times and all sentient beings, I rejoice in them all. All the Tathagatas in the ten directions, I now request to turn the great Dharma wheel. Therefore, we also, like the saints, proclaim the merit and virtue of the original vows, build a mandala, gather all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, the assembly of saints, display various offerings, praise the sacred names, and offer various offerings. Now, receiving the grace of the saints, we gather in the mandala, humbly requesting the saints to bestow their grace, remember their great vows, and fulfill our mandala assembly, and also wishing that (name) we sentient beings, seeing before us, obtain the merits and benefits as described in the scripture. (Say this three times). Furthermore, one should make offerings to each of the saints, make vows, and pray. First, recite the name of Good Name Auspicious King Buddha Tathagata (善名稱吉祥王佛如來), present various offerings, and pray, saying: 'Namo Refuge Offering Bhagavan Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha Good Name Auspicious King Buddha (南無歸依供養婆伽梵如來應正等覺善名稱吉祥王佛)' (Say this seven times). 所發勝愿。惟愿我等一切有情。所有病苦逼切其身。熱病諸瘧蟲道厭魅起尸鬼等。種種怖畏之所惱害。惟愿我等乃至證得無上菩提。如是所有災難病苦。愿皆消滅愿盡消滅。

復愿我等及諸有情。所有種種盲聾瘖啞。白癩癲狂眾病困苦。惟愿我等乃至證得無上菩提。諸根具足所有一切疾病困苦。愿盡消滅。

又愿我等及諸有情。為貪瞋癡之所纏縛。造無間罪及諸惡行。誹謗正法不修眾善。當墮地獄及諸惡趣受諸痛苦。惟愿我等如是所有五無間罪。及諸業障愿皆消滅。乃至證得無上菩提。不復墮落三惡趣道。常受人天殊勝快樂。

May all sentient beings, afflicted by illnesses and suffering, such as fever, various malarias, diseases caused by insects, enchantments, reanimated corpses, and various fears, be free from these torments. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (supreme enlightenment), have all these calamities and sufferings extinguished, completely extinguished.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings be free from all kinds of blindness, deafness, muteness, vitiligo, epilepsy, madness, and other diseases and sufferings. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, have all our senses complete and perfect, and may all diseases and sufferings be completely extinguished.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings be free from all kinds of poverty and suffering, lacking clothing, food, ornaments, bedding, wealth, treasures, incense, flowers, and music. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, have all clothing, food, ornaments, bedding, wealth, treasures, incense, flowers, and music, all be abundant and prosperous.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, be bound by shackles, and whipped, suffering various torments. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, be liberated from all kinds of bondage, whipping, and all sufferings, and may they all be extinguished.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, be without help or refuge, be oppressed by the fire of suffering, and in dangerous and difficult places, be harmed by various evil beasts such as bears, brown bears, lions, tigers, leopards, jackals, venomous snakes, vipers and scorpions, who seek to take their lives and cause great suffering. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, be liberated from all fears. May all evil beasts develop compassion and always be at peace.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, entering rivers, lakes, and seas to make a living, encounter huge and terrible storms blowing our ships, with no islands to dock on, and feel extreme worry and distress, may we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, be free from all fears, and may everything be as we wish, reaching safe places and enjoying all kinds of happiness.

Furthermore, may we, after this life ends, be immediately reborn in the Buddha-land of the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Shubhanama-shri-raja-tathagata (the Well-Named Glorious King Thus Come One, Buddha's name), born from lotus flowers on lion thrones made of various treasures, attaining all the merits of various Dharani-mukhas (gates of Dharani) and Samadhi-mukhas (gates of Samadhi). And in the presence of the revered teacher, Shubhanama-shri-raja-tathagata, and the Buddhas of the ten directions, may we hear the wonderful Dharma, attend to and make offerings, receive the Buddha's joy, and in a very short time, freely enter and exit the Buddha-lands without hindrance. Next, state the offerings, etc.: Now, in the presence of all the Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas, if we hear the name of Ratnachandra-jnana-shri-prabha-svara-raja-tathagata, contemplate with right mindfulness, praise the holy name, respectfully make offerings, and prostrate seven times, by the power of the majestic spirit, just like the most supreme and subtle vows made by Ratnachandra-jnana-shri-prabha-svara-raja-tathagata, may we and all sentient beings, for the sake of managing agriculture and commercial affairs, happily indulge in attachment, causing our minds to be disturbed, neglecting the cultivation of the supreme good Dharma of Bodhi, falling into the cycle of birth and death, unable to escape, each enduring immeasurable and boundless aging, sickness, death, sorrow, grief, suffering, and affliction. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, have clothing, food, and the means of livelihood, gold, silver, and treasures, abundantly fulfilled according to our wishes, may all good roots increase, and may we not abandon the mind of Bodhi, and may the suffering of all evil paths be liberated.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, if our bodies are oppressed by cold, heat, hunger, and thirst, and suffer great distress.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, if there are women who are tormented in body and mind by various sufferings, and who feel disgust, and who suffer great pain during childbirth, may all such sufferings be eliminated. May they also be born as their last birth, and until they attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, may they always be born as men.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, if we travel in dangerous places with parents, siblings, spouses, relatives, and friends, and are invaded by thieves and suffer various afflictions, may we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, be liberated from all such afflictions of being invaded by thieves in dangerous places, and may all calamities be eliminated.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, who engage in various activities in the dark night, and are disturbed by evil spirits, and experience extreme sorrow and suffering, may we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, have all such evil sufferings transformed from darkness to light, and may all evil spirits generate compassion, arouse great diligence, and attend to us with offerings.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, who engage in base deeds, do not believe in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), have little wisdom, do not cultivate good deeds, and do not practice the five roots, five powers, seven factors of enlightenment, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, the Four Right Exertions, the Four Bases of Miraculous Power, meditative concentration, and total retention (Dharani). May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, gradually increase our wisdom, deeply believe in the Three Jewels, and fully study the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment (Bodhipaksa-dharmas).

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, whose minds are base and who abide in the practice of the Two Vehicles (Sravaka-yana, Pratyekabuddha-yana), abandoning the unsurpassed and wonderful Bodhi (Enlightenment). May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, generate the Bodhi-mind, abandon the views of the Two Vehicles, and never regress from unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, when we see the end of the kalpa (aeon) approaching, and when fires are about to arise in Jambudvipa (the world we live in) and other places, experience great sorrow, terror, suffering, and weeping, and due to the power of evil karma from previous lives, suffer these afflictions without refuge. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, have all these sorrows and sufferings eliminated, and enjoy cool bliss.

Next, express offerings, etc. Now, before all the Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas, if we hear the name of Jin Se Bao Guang Miao Xing Cheng Jiu Rulai (Golden Light Wonderful Conduct Accomplishment Tathagata), contemplate with right mindfulness, praise the holy name, and respectfully make offerings and prostrations seven times with the power of divine might, just like the supreme and subtle vows made by Jin Se Bao Guang Miao Xing Cheng Jiu Rulai (Golden Light Wonderful Conduct Accomplishment Tathagata). May we and all sentient beings, due to creating various acts of slaughter and harm, cutting off the lives of beings, and suffering the pain of hell due to these evil deeds, even if we are born as humans, be short-lived and sickly, or be injured by water, fire, knives, or poison, and suffer the pain of death, may all our evil deeds be extinguished until we attain unsurpassed Bodhi, and may we be free from illness, live long lives, and not die untimely deaths.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, due to committing evil deeds, forcibly seizing or stealing property, fall into evil realms. Even if we are born as humans, may we be born into poor families, lacking clothing and food, and constantly suffering hardships. May all our evil deeds be extinguished until we attain unsurpassed Bodhi, and may we lack nothing in clothing and food, and may we be abundant.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, all beings who insult and despise each other, become enemies, and kill each other. May such suffering be extinguished until we attain unsurpassed Bodhi, and may each of us arise with compassion, like parents.

Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, all beings who are bound and covered by greed, hatred, and delusion, whether householders or renunciants, men or women, the seven assemblies, violate the precepts established by the Tathagata, and create all kinds of evil.

Sitting under the Bodhi tree, he observed that sentient beings are entangled by greed, hatred, and delusion, oppressed by various diseases, taken advantage of by enemies, or sometimes die prematurely, and also fall into hell due to evil karma, suffering great pain. To benefit these suffering sentient beings, to eliminate their karmic obstacles, and to ultimately abide in Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unsurpassed complete and perfect enlightenment).

At the time of death, may we see that World Honored One, the Tathagata of Golden Light, Wonderful Conduct, and Accomplishment, being mindful of us with compassion. May we be pleased by the Buddhas and, in an instant, enter the Buddha-lands without obstruction. May the stolen essence be restored to its original state, and may all illnesses and sufferings be liberated. Furthermore, may we and all sentient beings, born in border regions, due to associating with evil friends, create many sinful deeds, do not cultivate good deeds, and have never heard the names of the Three Jewels (Buddha-Dharma-Sangha). 【English Translation】 English version: May this Dharma sound, I and all sentient beings, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (supreme perfect enlightenment), eliminate all such karmic obstacles, encounter good spiritual friends (Kalyāṇa-mitra), not fall into evil destinies (Durgati), and never abandon the Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment). May we and all sentient beings, if lacking in clothing, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life, experience great sorrow and suffering due to this cause, and create various evil karmas in seeking these necessities. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, have clothing, food, bedding, medicine, and other necessities of life readily available as we wish, without any deficiency. May we and all sentient beings, due to past evil karma, engage in mutual strife, causing harm to each other, using bows, arrows, swords, and staffs to inflict damage. May all of us, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, even when using swords and staffs to harm each other, generate hearts of loving-kindness, not harming each other, and may all unwholesome thoughts be dispelled. May we not even generate thoughts of harming others, let alone desiring to take their lives, and may we always practice joy and generosity, with each being content with their own possessions and belongings, without encroaching upon others. Next, offering and so on: Now, before all the Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas, if one hears the name of the Dharma-ocean Supreme Wisdom Sport Divine Power Buddha, contemplates and praises the sacred name with right mindfulness, and respectfully makes offerings and prostrates seven times, relying on the power of divine might, it will be like the supreme and subtle vows made by the Tathagata Dharma-ocean Supreme Wisdom Sport Divine Power. May we and all sentient beings, who have created various evil karmas, such as planting and cultivating that harms the lives of beings, or engaging in transactions that deceive others, and constantly commit killings in battles and wars, may we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment), have our needs met without seeking, and be satisfied at will.

May we and all sentient beings, who have committed the ten evil deeds, such as killing, be destined to fall into hell because of these causes. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, achieve success in the ten virtuous paths and not fall into the evil realms.

May we and all sentient beings not be bound and not be free, but be controlled by others, or be imprisoned, suffering from shackles, yokes, chains, whips, and even extreme punishments. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, be liberated from all calamities, imprisonment, and whippings, and attain freedom and perfect majesty.

May we and all sentient beings, who have short lives due to creating evil karmas, not encounter unexpected disasters at any time. At the time of death, even if we only temporarily hear the name of the Tathagata Dharma-ocean Supreme Wisdom Sport Divine Power, with right mindfulness present, we can be liberated from all difficulties, be constantly born in China, and enjoy supreme bliss. May we, until we attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, be forever free from all difficulties and constantly enjoy the supreme bliss of humans and devas.

May we, upon death, be reborn in the Buddha-land of the Tathagata Dharma-ocean Supreme Wisdom Sport Divine Power, be born from lotus flowers on jeweled lotus lion thrones, and attain various Dharani-mukhas (gates of dharani), Samadhi-mukhas (gates of samadhi), and all merits. Furthermore, may we listen to the wonderful Dharma, serve and make offerings to the guide, the Tathagata Dharma-ocean Supreme Wisdom Sport Divine Power, and the Tathagatas of the ten directions, and be pleased by the Buddhas. In a very short time, may we enter the Buddha-lands without hindrance. Next, offer the offerings: Now, in the presence of all Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas, if one hears the name of Bhaisajya-guru-vaidurya-prabharaja (Medicine Buddha, the Lapis Lazuli Light King Buddha), contemplates with right mindfulness, praises the holy name, respectfully makes offerings, and bows seven times, relying on the power of his majestic virtue, just like the supreme and subtle vows made by Bhaisajya-guru-vaidurya-prabharaja Tathagata (Thus Come One). May we and all sentient beings be adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, our bodies radiant and blazing, illuminating immeasurable and boundless worlds. May we enable all sentient beings to be the same, without any difference.

May we and all sentient beings have bodies like lapis lazuli, clear and bright inside and out, pure and without flaws, with vast and radiant light, majestic virtues, and well-established bodies, adorned with a net of flames surpassing the sun and moon. May we and all sentient beings, until we attain unsurpassed Bodhi (Enlightenment), be like Bhaisajya-guru-vaidurya-prabharaja Tathagata, without any difference. May beings in the darkness receive enlightenment, see each other, and freely go where they wish, doing all kinds of deeds.

May we and all sentient beings, through Bhaisajya-guru-vaidurya-prabharaja Tathagata, with immeasurable wisdom and skillful means, enable us and all sentient beings, until we attain unsurpassed Bodhi, to obtain endless objects of enjoyment, so that no sentient being lacks anything.

May we and all sentient beings, if walking on wrong paths, may we and all sentient beings, until we attain unsurpassed Bodhi, be established on the right path of Bodhi. If walking on the inferior vehicles of Sravakas (Hearers) and Pratyekabuddhas (Solitary Buddhas), may we establish them with the vows of the Great Vehicle.

May we and all sentient beings, practicing pure conduct in the Buddha-dharma, all attain unbroken precepts, well guarding the three karmas of body, speech, and mind, without any violations. May we, until we attain unsurpassed Bodhi, even if there are violations, regain purity and not fall into evil realms.

May we and all sentient beings, with incomplete faculties, ugly, dull, blind, deaf, mute, crippled, hunchbacked, with white leprosy, madness, and afflicted by various illnesses. May we and all sentient beings

After this life ends, one will be reborn in the Buddha-field of Bhaisajyaguru-vaidurya-prabharaja (Medicine Buddha), born from a lotus on a jeweled lotus lion throne, attaining various dharani-mukhas (gates of dharani), samadhi-mukhas (gates of samadhi), and all merits. Again, at the place of the guide, Bhaisajyaguru-vaidurya-prabharaja-tathagata (Medicine Buddha) and the Tathagatas of the ten directions, one will hear the wonderful Dharma, attend and make offerings, and be pleased by the Buddhas. In a short time, one will be able to enter the Buddha-fields without obstruction. Namo Buddhaya (Homage to the Buddha) (repeated seven times).

Great Sage Manjushri (曼殊室利) Bodhisattva-Mahasattva (菩薩摩訶薩), whose mind is free from all defilements, utterly without blemish, possessing immeasurable merits, whose pure light adorns his body, and who can purify all evil paths. At this time, the Four Great Heavenly Kings (Si Da Tianwang) with their retinues and countless hundreds of thousands of heavenly beings, all come to that place to make offerings, protect, and uphold the scripture. Know that in this place, there will be no untimely death, nor will one's essence be taken away by evil ghosts and spirits. Even if it has been taken, it will be restored to its original state, with body and mind at peace. Therefore, as it is said in the scripture, the profound meaning of the Great Sage is true, just, and equal, without change, and does not abandon its original vows. May you abide in this offering incense altar and receive the offerings. May you also abide before the assembly of the Tathagata (Rulai), urging and awakening the great vows of the past, and perfecting the mandala of our rituals. May all sentient beings, including ourselves, obtain the merits and benefits described in the scripture before our eyes. May you compassionately receive and grant us your acceptance. Next, present the offerings, etc.: The Great Sage Saving Bodhisattva (Dasheng Jiu Tuo Pusa), for the sake of all sentient beings in that evil world who are troubled and afflicted by afflictions, out of compassion and benefit for these beings, before the World Honored One (Shizun), in the midst of the assembly, said to the Buddha: World Honored One, in the later degenerate age when the semblance of the Dharma arises, if there are sentient beings who are oppressed and troubled by various illnesses, whose bodies are weak and emaciated, unable to eat or drink, whose throats and lips are dry, whose eyes are dim, and whose signs of death appear before them, surrounded by weeping parents, relatives, friends, and acquaintances, lying in their place, seeing the messengers of King Yama (Yanmo Fawang) leading their consciousness to the king's abode. However, all sentient beings have co-born spirits (Jusheng Shen) who record all the good and evil deeds they have done and hand them over to the king. The king then inquires about their deeds according to the law, and judges them according to their sins or merits. At this time, if the patient's relatives and acquaintances can take refuge in the Medicine Buddha (Yaoshi Liuli Guang Rulai) and all the Tathagatas (Rulai) for them, and make offerings with various adornments according to the Dharma, then their consciousness, either after seven days, or from two sevens to seven sevens of days, will awaken from a dream and regain their original spirit, and they will all remember and know the karmic consequences of their good and evil deeds. 【English Translation】 English version Ananda, if there are sick people or those facing other calamities who wish to be freed from them, they should observe the Eight Precepts for seven days and seven nights for that person. They should offer food, drink, and other resources, according to their means, to the Buddha and the Sangha. They should respectfully make offerings during the six periods of the day and night, prostrate to the Seven Buddhas Tathagatas, recite this sutra forty-nine times, light forty-nine lamps, and create seven images of those Tathagatas. In front of each image, place seven lamps. The shape of these seven lamps should be round like a wheel, and the light should not be extinguished for forty-nine nights. Create forty-nine banners of various colors, and one long banner of forty-nine feet. Release forty-nine living beings. Great Virtue Ananda, this is the ritual and method of making offerings to the Tathagata. If a Kshatriya (Kshatriya, the second of the four Hindu castes, traditionally warriors or rulers) Abhisheka-raja (Abhiṣeka-rāja, a king crowned through an Abhisheka ritual), etc., encounters calamities, such as epidemics among the people, invasion by other countries, rebellion within their own territory, strange changes in the stars, solar or lunar eclipses, unseasonal wind and rain, or no rain when it is due, these Kshatriya Abhisheka-rajas should, at that time, generate great compassion towards all sentient beings, grant a great amnesty, and liberate those beings who are in dark straits and suffering. Following the previous ritual, make offerings to Bhaisajyaguru (Bhaisajyaguru, Medicine Buddha) Vaiduryaprabharaja Tathagata and all the Tathagatas. Due to this root of goodness and the power of the original vows of those Tathagatas, their country will immediately be secure, the wind and rain will be timely, the crops will ripen, and the beings within the country will be free from disease and happy. Furthermore, there will be no violent and evil Yakshas (Yaksa, a type of guardian spirit) or other spirits who mutually disturb and cause trouble. All evil omens will disappear. These Kshatriya Abhisheka-rajas will all increase in lifespan, complexion, strength, and freedom from disease. Therefore, as it is said in the sutra, the profound and wonderful teachings of the Great Sage are true and equal, without change, and do not abandon the original vows. May the Tathagata reside in this offering altar and receive our offerings, and may the Tathagata reside before the assembly of the Tathagatas, urging and awakening the great vows made in the past, and fulfilling our rituals and mandala. May all sentient beings, before our eyes, obtain the merits and benefits described in the sutra. May you compassionately receive us, may you grant us reception. Next, offer the following: Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva (Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva). Mahabrahma (Great Brahma King). Indra (Lord of the Gods). Dhritarashtra (Guardian King of the East). Virudhaka (Guardian King of the South). Virupaksha (Guardian King of the West). Vaishravana (Guardian King of the North). All Upasakas (Lay practitioners). And all the Dharma protectors and holy assembly. In the past, before that assembly, with truthful heavenly words, they reported to the World Honored One: 'We, the great assembly, have all heard the supreme merits of the original vows of the Seven Buddhas, and have seen all the Buddhas personally making offerings to the World Honored One. If in any place there is this scripture and the Dharani method of the Seven Buddhas' names, circulating, making offerings, and even writing it down, we will all, relying on the Buddha's power, immediately go to that place to protect the kings, ministers, cities, villages, men, and women there, preventing them from being troubled by all sufferings and diseases. We will thus repay the Buddhas' kindness, and also prevent them from dying prematurely, and eliminate all conflicts, battles, lawsuits, and enmities. Whatever they wish for will be fulfilled, and they will always have peace, abundant wealth and food, and we will always protect them. World Honored One, we have personally made this vow before the Buddha. If there are men and women of pure faith who remember us, they should recite this mantra.' Then they spoke the mantra:

If there are men and women of pure faith who recite the names of the Seven Buddhas and this divine mantra, read, recite, write, and respectfully make offerings, in this life they will all obtain freedom from illness, longevity, freedom from all suffering and affliction, and will not fall into the three evil realms. They will attain non-retrogression up to Bodhi, and will be reborn at will in those Buddha lands, always see the Buddhas, obtain the wisdom of knowing past lives, and be fully endowed with mindfulness, concentration, and total retention. Thus, they made great vows.

At that time, Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva (Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva) went to that Buddha and said to the World Honored One: 'To protect those who uphold this scripture in the future, so that they will be free from all troubles and have their wishes fulfilled, I will now speak a Dharani.'

They should enshrine Buddha relics within the bodies of all the images. In front of these images, as described above, they should make offerings with various incense, flowers, hanging banners and canopies, exquisite food and drink, and various musical instruments, and pay homage by bowing and circumambulating. They should cultivate a compassionate heart towards all beings, observe the eight precepts, bathe three times a day for purification, and change clothes three times a day. From the eighth day of the white moon to the fifteenth day of the following month, they should recite the mantra one hundred and eight times each day, with a focused mind. Furthermore, may the 'Sutra of the Merits of the Fundamental Vows of the Seven Buddhas' and all other scriptures and Dharma treasures endure in the world for a long time, spreading to the ten directions. May the Dharma flourish greatly, increasing benefits and happiness.

Moreover, may we who uphold the Dharma, along with all the people in our country and various livestock, be free from all kinds of diseases, plagues, and calamities. May the damage to crops caused by droughts, floods, frost, and hail be averted. May all inauspicious phenomena, such as monstrous anomalies and inauspicious events that afflict sentient beings, be eliminated. May those evil spirits who frequently roam the country, causing harm and various disasters, be subdued through various means, according to their respective needs. These calamities, which we (N.N.) may have incurred due to past karma or present actions, or due to the ancestral lineage of this place, and those spirits who obstruct the life, country, power, freedom, family, resources, people, livestock, and all prosperity of (N.N.) and others, may they all be tamed. May they abandon their resentment and harmful intentions, and with compassionate hearts, dispel all inauspicious events and evil deeds. May they all disappear and vanish. From now on, may these spirits not harbor evil intentions or create obstacles. May they, each in their respective categories, make vows before the holy ones, establish important oaths, abide in Samaya (vow, precept), and always perform good deeds. 爾時世尊贊諸藥叉大將言。善哉善哉大藥叉將。汝等念報七佛如來恩德。常應如是利益安樂一切有情。亦如讚許惟愿今時。引領調順一切善眾赴此供養。以慈愍心受用供養。圓滿我等儀軌道場。亦愿我等一切有情。見前獲得如經所說功德善利。愿垂攝授愿賜攝授。

復愿七佛本願功德經。及諸經典一切法寶。久住世間流佈十方。愿大興隆利樂有情。

又愿我等受持法門。及國界中所有人民及諸孳畜。而生種種疾病疫癘種種患難。旱澇霜雹損壞苗稼。妖孳變怪一切惡相。不吉祥事惱害眾生。如是等類諸惡鬼神。常在於國往來惱害。起諸災難如是等難。我(某甲)等由先業招或現業感。及為方所祖宗相繼。與(某甲)等身命國界。威力自在眷屬資具。人民孳畜一切盛事。

Next is the offering, etc., to the twelve Yaksha hosts of the auspicious and virtuous Upasaka (優婆塞, male lay devotee). Each great general has seven hundred million Yaksha retinues. They should have compassion for us, who in the past, at the assembly, heard the true voice of the heavens. At the same time, they raised their voices and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, we, today, by the Buddha's power, have heard the names of the Tathagatas such as Bhaisajyaguruvaiduryaprabharaja (藥師琉璃光王) and others, and we no longer fear any evil forces. We lead each other, all with one mind, and even to the end of our lives, we take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. We vow to bear the responsibility for all sentient beings, to bring them benefit, enrichment, and peace. Wherever this sutra is circulated and recited, whether in cities, villages, or secluded forests, or if someone upholds the names of the Seven Buddhas and makes offerings with reverence, our retinues will protect these people, freeing them from all difficulties, and fulfilling all their wishes.'

At that time, the World Honored One praised the Yaksha generals, saying: 'Excellent! Excellent! Great Yaksha Generals. You remember and repay the kindness of the Seven Buddhas, and you should always benefit and bring peace to all sentient beings in this way.' Just as praised before, may you now lead and subdue all virtuous beings to attend this offering, and with compassionate hearts, receive the offerings, and perfect our rituals and mandala. May all sentient beings, including us, see and obtain the merits and benefits as described in the sutra. May the Buddha have compassion and receive us, may the Buddha have mercy and receive us.

May the Sutra of the Fundamental Vows and Merits of the Seven Buddhas (七佛本願功德經), as well as all sutras and all Dharma treasures, abide in the world for a long time, and circulate in all ten directions. May it flourish greatly, benefiting and bringing peace to all sentient beings.

Furthermore, may the Dharma teachings that we uphold, as well as all the people and various livestock within the country, be free from all kinds of diseases, epidemics, and various calamities; may there be no damage to crops from droughts, floods, frost, or hail; may there be no strange anomalies or inauspicious omens; may there be no unlucky events that trouble sentient beings; may evil ghosts and spirits of this kind, who often come and go in the country, causing trouble and various disasters, may these disasters, which we (name) have incurred due to past karma or present actions, or due to the location and ancestral lineage, be related to the life, country, power, freedom, retinues, resources, people, livestock, and all prosperity of (name).

Letting them, each according to their category, make vows before the holy ones, establish vows, abide by the Samaya (vow), and constantly perform good deeds, appearing in this way before us. Also, wishing that all people in the country and all sentient beings, all diseases and plagues, all disasters, crop failures, invasions by enemies, and inauspicious events, may they all be completely eradicated. May the wind and rain be timely, may the five grains be abundant, may livestock increase, may all people and all sentient beings forever enjoy happiness. In the future, may we be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, meet the World Honored One, hear the wonderful Dharma, quickly perfect the two accumulations, and certainly attain the unsurpassed Buddha fruit of Bodhi.
