Netraratna Pure Land Iconography

Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) is entirely light blue-green. Within the jeweled cave are hundreds of jeweled lotus flowers. On his seat, he enters the Mahasunyata-samadhi (Great Emptiness Samadhi), emitting countless rays of light. Within each ray of light are immeasurable manifested Buddhas, all appearing in the aspect of Mahasunyata-samadhi. His right arm is raised with the palm open, adjusting his hand to open a leaf. His left hand rests below his navel, hooking his little finger, known as the Great Jeweled Lapis Lazuli Medicine. The ground is the color of dark lapis lazuli, with countless jeweled flower trees like grains of dust. The shapes of the flowers and leaves of the trees are either in the form of Buddhas, emitting immeasurable light, named Buddha-paramita (Perfection of Buddha); or in the form of Bodhisattvas, producing immeasurable music, named Samadhi-dharani (Samadhi Dharani); or in the form of golden halls, emitting immeasurable clouds of hundreds of jewels, named Bodhi-vyuha (Wonderful Adornment of Enlightenment); or in the form of jeweled stupas, producing immeasurable heavenly beings, named Awakening Wisdom Tree, Mo Ri Yu Lun Tree (Jin Dao says Merit and Wisdom). Immeasurable hundreds of thousands of banners and streamers are arranged in rows, adorned with immeasurable jeweled nets, jeweled garlands, bells, and chimes. To the left and right in front of the Buddha, the four castes of renunciants all enter into samadhi (referring to kings, ministers, Brahmins, and householders). On the first level to the left is Vajragarbha (Vajra Womb) Bodhisattva, whose entire body is light red-blue, seated on a jeweled lotus platform. In the center of the palm of his right hand stands a three-pronged vajra (thunderbolt scepter). His left hand is bent at the elbow, with the five fingers pointing upwards, the thumb pressing on the nail of the little finger, with a multitude of Bodhisattvas as attendants, including Cloud Fragrance Bodhisattva, Flower Jade Bodhisattva, Vajra Palms Together Bodhisattva, Fire-Headed Heavenly Appearance Bodhisattva, Immortal Appearance Bodhisattva, and others. 【English Translation】 English version Some lotuses are in full bloom, some are half-open, and some are yet to open. Or their precious fruit is displayed, with countless Bodhisattvas as attendants. These Bodhisattvas include those holding incense burners, Mahamala (great garland), and vermilion flowers. On the second tier to the right is depicted Candraprabha (Moonlight Bodhisattva), whose entire body is white-red, with a moon disc in his left palm and a red-white lotus in his right hand. Countless Bodhisattvas serve as attendants, including those holding hooks and hook-bells. Near the back of Pandara-vasini (White-robed Avalokiteshvara) are depicted the ten disciples and twenty-one or thirty-five Arhats, each leading countless Shravakas (voice-hearers) as their retinue. Each leader holds an object, according to their original form and mudra (hand gesture). The retinue members are each on the right side of the Dharma-bearer, maintaining the form of the Dharma. To the left, right, and behind, countless immortals, both male and female, hold flowers, picking them at any time. In the outer courtyards to the left and right in front of the Buddha, countless celestial beings are depicted in forms of music and dance. For example, a Gandharva (celestial musician) woman is depicted playing the qin (zither) and offering celestial music; a Kinnara (celestial musician) is depicted playing golden drums with his heart; a Garuda (mythical bird) woman is depicted playing the flute and offering celestial music; Prithvi (earth goddess) women are all depicted playing drums; Asura (demi-god) women are depicted offering celestial drums; Mahoraga (great serpent deity) women are depicted offering sheng (mouth organ) music; and the great demon retinue is depicted offering dance and celestial music. In the upper and lower eight directions of the outer courtyard are depicted the twelve divine generals and countless Vajra (thunderbolt) youths as their retinue. The following are the forms of the twelve divine generals:

First, Kumbhira, located in the direction of Ishana, is a formidable general. His color is yellow, he rides a tiger, and he holds a khadga (sword). His right hand is clenched and pressed against his left waist. Or it is said that he is located in the northeast direction.

Second, Vajra, located in the direction of Indra, is a Vajra general. His color is blue, his eyes are red, and he rides a 㝹 (an animal). He holds a three-pronged vajra (thunderbolt), and his left hand is bent, with the wind finger pointing upwards. Or it is said that he is located in the east direction.

Third, Mihira, located in the direction of Agni, is a Dharma-protecting general. His color is like flaming blue smoke, and he rides a dragon. He holds a halberd with a flaming flag on top, which he manipulates with both hands. Or it is said that he is located in the southeast direction.

Fourth, Andira, located in the direction of Agata, is a Dharma-protecting general. His color is like flaming yellow smoke, and he rides a snake. He holds a khadga (axe), and his left hand is clenched, with the wind finger extended, holding a fire pearl. Or it is said that he is located in the south direction.

Fifth, Antira, located in the direction of Yamaraja, is a Dharma-upholding general. His color is red, and his eyes emit flames and lightning.

【English Translation】 English version First, the Fire God rides a horse with two wings. In his left hand he holds the Daiyuelu (Dàiyuèlú, a weapon or symbol), and in his right hand he holds the Jingshangyan (Jìngshàngyán, the reflection of flame in a mirror, symbolizing light). Some say he is located in the southwest.

Second, the Rakshasa General of Shandiluoniejiandifang (Shāndǐluónièlíjiāndǐfāng), whose color is yellowish-red, appears in the form of a Rakshasa, riding a sheep. In his left hand he holds a mirror, and in his right hand he holds the Zhantujian (Zhàntújiàn, a type of sword). Or he holds the Daizhiliye (Dàizhǐlǐyě, a weapon or symbol). Some say he is located in the west.

Third, the Envoy General of Yindaluonieidifang (Yīndáluónièlǐdǐfāng), whose color is yellow, rides a [荻-火+隹] (dí, a type of bird). In his left hand he holds a white whisk, and in his right hand he holds the Linglingzhanye (línglìngzhānyě, a type of bell). Some say he is located in the west-north.

Fourth, the Wolf Dragon General of Bayiluochuanmengtufang (Báyīluóchuánméngtúfāng), whose color is white and mixed, rides a Garuda. In his left hand he holds a Cintamani, and in his right hand he holds a Vajra Ghanta (jīngāngduó, a type of bell). Some say he is located in the north.

Fifth, the General of Mohuluowagengfang (Móhóuluówāgēngfāng), or the Wind-Breaking General. He rides a dog-shaped creature, which is fearsome, the so-called Tengu. His left hand is clenched, extending the wind finger wheel, and his right hand bends the wind finger. His color is like black wind. Some say he is located above.

Sixth, the Water-Breaking General of Zhendaluowagengfang (Zhēndáluówāgēngfāng), rides a pig. In his right hand he holds a hook, and his left hand bends the earth-water finger. His color is like black water. Some say he is located below.

Seventh, the World-Protecting General of Zhaoduluopishamengfang (Zhāodùluópíshāméngfāng), also known as the Mani General. He rides a rat. In his right hand he holds a Cintamani, and in his left hand he holds a snare (juànsuǒ, a type of rope). His color is like the black clouds of summer. Some say he is located in the west.

Eighth, the Diligent Wrathful General of Pijieluoyishenafang (Píjiéluōyīshěnàfāng), rides a bull, which is a water buffalo. In his hands he holds a treasure bow and arrow. His color is black-blue, but slightly diminishes the previous color. Some say he is located in the Guan direction.

Protecting inside before the Buddha are the Kalavinka (Jiālíngpínqié) and the White Swan (báihú). The Dharma sounds spoken by these birds, the foremost five (shàngshǒuwǔ), are all the same, and they emit the sound of 'Tishuo'. Therefore, they are called Jivamkara Birds. Pure lapis lazuli land can be used to convey messages.
