The Aspiration Prayer for Sukhavati (Pure Land)

Translated by the Da Lama Gabchu Samdan Darji of Fuyou Temple, who walks in the Qing script academy.

Rare is he who endlessly benefits beings, A brief thought of him makes the Lord of Death hard to approach, He constantly views sentient beings as if remembering his only child, To the World Honored One, Buddha Amitabha (Infinite Life Buddha), I pay homage.

Among the deeds of Sakyamuni (the historical Buddha), the Pure Land is praised as the supreme realm. I will speak of the words of the aspiration prayer for rebirth in Sukhavati to the best of my ability, out of compassion. Good and evil are heavily obscured by ignorance, The lives of gods and humans are ravaged by the weapons of anger. Bound by the ropes of attachment in the prison of samsara, Drifting in the ocean of the three realms by the waters of karma, Pushed and tossed by the waves of sickness and old age, Forced into the mouth of the sea monster of the Lord of Death, Constantly oppressed by the burden of unwanted suffering, Helplessly wailing in disgrace, May Amitabha (Infinite Light), who witnesses with his heart, guide the suffering. To Avalokitesvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) and Mahasthamaprapta (the Bodhisattva of Great Strength), and their retinues, I earnestly pray. For our sake, in countless eons, you have made great vows; may you not forget them. Like the Garuda bird soaring through the sky, May you descend with the power of your compassionate miracles.

I prostrate, wishing that the accumulation of merit and wisdom of myself and others throughout the three times, may universally combine into one force. When we approach the end of our lives, may we personally see Amitabha (Infinite Light) coming to receive us, along with the two great Bodhisattvas and their retinues surrounding us. At that time, may we generate the utmost sincerity towards the Buddha's retinue, without the suffering of interrupted life, without losing our faith and sincerity, and without losing the mindfulness of the realms we have seen. As we approach our end, may the eight great Buddha-sons all arrive with miraculous transformations, pointing out the path to Sukhavati (Pure Land). Following their teachings, may we immediately go to the supreme realm of Sukhavati (Pure Land), and from within the precious lotus, may we be born into a lineage of great vehicle with sharp faculties.

At the time of birth, may we fully possess all dharanis (mantras), samadhis (meditative absorptions), the mind of non-duality, endless eloquence, and countless supreme merits. May we then receive the great joy of the supreme guide, Amitabha (Infinite Light) Buddha, and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions. May we receive great

【English Translation】 English version: By the Dharma command of multiplication, may I thoroughly comprehend the meaning of all those Dharmas in an instant, and by unimpeded miraculous powers, reach the Buddha-land of vastness and expanse (referring to the vast and expansive pure Buddha-land). May I extensively practice the wonderful conduct of Bodhisattvas, and may all be perfectly fulfilled. When I am born in the Pure Land, may I generate all kinds of courageous compassion, and with unimpeded miraculous powers, especially come to the impure lands (referring to worlds filled with defilements). For all beings, each according to their own conditions, may I teach them according to the Dharma, and may I settle them on the pure path praised by all Buddhas. May I universally practice rare and precious conduct, and may all be quickly fulfilled, benefiting boundless beings, and may they all easily attain Buddhahood. May I, at the time of death, be surrounded by the assembly of the sea (referring to the multitude of holy beings) around Amitabha (Amitabha), and may I clearly see before my eyes, with compassion and faith filling my heart. When the signs of the Bardo (referring to the transitional period between death and rebirth) appear, may the Buddha's disciples (referring to those who practice the Buddha's teachings) immediately give guidance. Since I have already been born in the Pure Land, may I come to transform the beings of the impure lands. Such a supreme state, perhaps I may not be born into it. I only wish that in life after life, I may always encounter Buddhism, and in all the sutras and treatises, may I be in accord with and realize hearing, contemplation, and cultivation. May I obtain a pure body. Since I have obtained that body, may I not be separated from the noble adornments of the seven virtues. Like this, at all times, may I remember past lives, and may I obtain the wisdom of knowing past lives (referring to the ability to understand past lives). In life after life, whenever I see the three realms of existence (referring to the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm), may I generate the thought that they are without benefit, and for the merits of liberation, may I immediately generate a strong desire. Within the precepts of all Buddhas, may I be able to renounce the world. Since I have renounced the world, may I be completely free from all evil falls, perfectly uphold the precepts, practice until I reach the gate of the limitless, and attain great Bodhi (referring to enlightenment). May I be like the great Bhikshu Akshobhya (Akshobhya). Again, in life after life, in all defiled and pure Dharmas, may I thoroughly comprehend according to reason, and perfectly accomplish the path. For the words and meanings of all Dharmas, may I have the Dharani (referring to memory) of not losing or forgetting, and may all be abundantly obtained. Like what I have already held, when showing it to others, may I obtain pure and unimpeded eloquence. Again, in life after life, for the Samadhis such as the Shurangama Samadhi, the five eyes such as the physical eye, and the six supernatural powers such as the power of divine realms, may I obtain all without separation. Again, in life after life, with the power of my own birth, may I distinguish all good and evil.

【English Translation】 English version: May I obtain vast wisdom, understanding the true meaning of all Dharmas. Regarding the subtle differences between defiled and pure Dharmas, may I clearly distinguish them without any confusion. May I obtain sharp and clear wisdom. May all thoughts of non-awakening, misinterpretation, and doubt be completely extinguished at the moment they arise. May I obtain swift-seeing wisdom. Regarding the subtle and profound meanings of the Dharma that others cannot comprehend, may I understand them without laborious study. May I obtain profound and secret wisdom. In summary, may I be able to distinguish the faults of revealing wisdom and the meanings of words that deviate from wisdom. May I cultivate the Bodhisattva path from skillful means and right wisdom, and ultimately reach the other shore. May I be like the venerable Manjushri Bodhisattva. May all these vast, sharp, clear, swift-seeing, profound, and secret wisdoms be easily obtained, held according to conditions, subduing heretical views, and delighting the wise. Because I am skilled in distinguishing, discussing, and compiling the Dharmas spoken by the Buddha, may I obtain the other shore that the wise can reach. Furthermore, in every lifetime, may all attachments to self-interest and any thoughts of regression in the vast practice of the Bodhisattva path be completely eradicated. With courageous mind, may I diligently benefit others and ultimately reach the other shore. From the heart of skillful means and Bodhi, may I practice the Bodhisattva path and ultimately reach the limitless realm. May I be like the victorious Avalokiteśvara (Avalokiteśvara). Furthermore, in every lifetime, may I cultivate both self-benefit and the benefit of others, destroying all demons, heretics, and enemies. From the power of skillful means and courage, may I cultivate the Bodhisattva path and ultimately reach the ultimate state. May I be like the secret lord Vajrapani (Vajrapani). In every lifetime, with tireless diligence, may I perfect the wonderful practices of the Bodhisattva, from the initial aspiration to every moment, without any laziness. Thus, through great diligence, may I obtain supreme Bodhi. May I be like the unparalleled Shakyamuni Buddha (Shakyamuni Buddha). In every lifetime, may I eliminate interruptions in the path of cultivation and eradicate all diseases of body and mind. By subtly reciting the title and name, may I extinguish the pain and faults of body, speech, and mind. May I be like the Medicine Buddha Bhaisajyaguru (Bhaisajyaguru). Furthermore, in every lifetime, if I desire limitless lifespan, by subtly reciting the title and name, may I destroy untimely and accidental death.

【English Translation】 English version May I be like Amitabha Buddha (Infinite Life Buddha).

When the obstacle of lifespan is about to arrive, may I see the saving Amitabha Buddha manifesting in any of the four activities of pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, or subjugating, to subdue the obstacles. Having seen the Buddha's form, may the obstacles to my lifespan be completely eliminated without any remainder.

When Amitabha Buddha manifests according to the needs of those to be guided, may I recognize that it is Amitabha Buddha. May I generate unwavering, firm, and sincere faith, and through the power of the Buddha's blessings, wherever I am born, may I never be separated from Amitabha Buddha, and may I be close to him as a spiritual guide.
