夫能仁之為教也。所契者道。所體者神。統法界而有為。窮三世而不息。無乎不在。故天為覆。地為載。日月星辰為照臨。群生品物為吉兇消長。感而遂通。故兇可以避。吉可以趨。天地日月星辰萬物。各可以使其至於當者。皆斯經之宗用也。其消禳災難。導致禎祥。方軌壇儀。要制期限。粲然靡所不載。足以上福邦家。下祐民庶。即近而達遠。即事而顯真。誠博要之道歟。爰自不空傳譯。歷代寶之。依法誦持。眾機蒙益。可無訓釋以裨流通。維昔云間鑒師。雖嘗疏解繁略未馴輒不自揆。採摭山家諸祖格言。刪補治定。庶或少補於將來。時至治二年。龍集壬戌。奉詔赴都。乘驛淮河。中秋日敘。

佛陀的教義,所契合的是真理(道),所體現的是精神(神)。它統攝法界的一切有為法,貫穿過去、現在、未來三世而不停息。無處不在,所以天覆蓋,地承載,日月星辰照耀,一切眾生的吉兇消長都受其影響。感應而通達,所以兇可以避免,吉可以趨向。天地日月星辰萬物,都可以使其達到適當的位置,這都是此經的宗旨和作用。其中消除災難,招致吉祥,方法、規範、壇場儀軌,以及要求的期限,都詳細地記載著。足以向上為國家帶來福祉,向下庇佑百姓。從近處而通達遠處,從事相而顯現真理,實在是廣博而精要的道理啊!自從不空三藏翻譯以來,歷代都非常珍視它。依法誦持,許多人都從中受益。怎麼能沒有訓釋來幫助流通呢?以前云間的鑒師,雖然曾經疏解,但內容繁雜簡略,不夠完善。因此我不自量力,採摘山家諸位祖師的格言,進行刪改補充,希望能對將來有所幫助。時至治二年,歲在壬戌,奉詔前往都城,乘驛車經過淮河,在中秋之日敘述。 《佛說熾盛光大威德消災吉祥陀羅尼經》

Preface to the Sutra of the Dhāraṇī of Uṣṇīṣa-vijaya, Great Dignity and Virtue, Eliminating Disasters and Bringing Good Fortune, Spoken by the Buddha
Narrated by the Śramaṇa Xingcheng of Yuexi
The teaching of the Buddha is in accordance with the Truth (Dharma), and embodies the Spirit (Divine). It governs all conditioned phenomena in the Dharma Realm and continues unceasingly through the three periods of time: past, present, and future. It is omnipresent, so the sky covers, the earth carries, the sun, moon, and stars illuminate, and the fortune and misfortune of all living beings are influenced by it. Through feeling and communication, misfortune can be avoided and fortune can be approached. The heavens, earth, sun, moon, stars, and all things can be brought to their proper positions. These are the principles and functions of this sutra. It elaborately records the methods, norms, altar rituals, and required time limits for eliminating disasters and bringing good fortune. It is sufficient to bring blessings to the country above and protect the people below. From the near to reach the far, from phenomena to reveal the truth, it is indeed a broad and essential path! Since the translation by Amoghavajra, it has been treasured by successive generations. Reciting and upholding it according to the Dharma has benefited many. How can there be no explanation to aid its circulation? Previously, the Master Jian of Yunjian had attempted to explain it, but the content was complex, brief, and not refined enough. Therefore, I, presuming beyond my abilities, have extracted the maxims of various ancestral masters of the mountain school, and revised and supplemented them, hoping to provide some help for the future. At the time of the second year of Zhizhi, in the year of Renxu, I was ordered to go to the capital, traveling by post through the Huai River, and narrated this on the Mid-Autumn Day. At that time, Śākyamuni Buddha, in the Pure Abode Heaven, told all the constellations, the wandering celestial beings, the Nine Grahas (Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies that govern the universe), the Twenty-eight Constellations (Nakshatra, the 28 lunar mansions in Indian astrology), the Twelve Zodiacal Deities (Zodiac signs), and all the holy assembly: I now speak of the method of eliminating disasters through the Dhāraṇī of Uṣṇīṣa-vijaya, Great Dignity and Virtue, spoken by the Tathāgata Sālarāja in the past. If there are kings and ministers residing in places, and various countries, or if they are oppressed by the Five Planets (referring to the five major planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn), Rahu (Rahu, a demon in Indian mythology, often causing solar and lunar eclipses), comets, and ominous stars shine upon their governed territories,
命宮宿及諸星位。或臨帝座於國於家及分野處。陵逼之時。或退或進作諸障難者。但于清凈處置立道場。念此陀羅尼一百八遍或一千遍。若一日二日三日乃至七日。依法修飾壇場。至心受持讀誦。一切災難皆悉消滅不能為害。若太白火星入于南鬥。於國於家及分野處作諸障難者。於一忿怒像前。畫彼設都嚕形。厲聲念此陀羅尼加持。其災即除移于不順王命悖逆人身上。受者即說陀羅尼曰。

此陀羅尼。一切如來同共宣說。若有苾芻苾芻尼族姓男族姓女。受持讀誦此陀羅尼者。能成就八萬種吉祥事。能除滅八萬種不吉祥事。若有國王大臣及諸眷屬一切庶民。或被五星羅睺計都彗孛妖怪惡星。陵逼帝座於國於家及分野

【English Translation】 English version: Regarding the constellations in the Palace of Life and the positions of various stars, if they approach the Emperor's Seat, causing disturbances to the country, the family, and the regions under their jurisdiction, or if the stars retrograde or progress, creating various obstacles and calamities, one only needs to establish a sacred space in a clean place and recite this Dharani one hundred and eight times or one thousand times. If one can continue for one day, two days, three days, up to seven days, adorn the altar according to the Dharma, and sincerely uphold and recite it, all calamities will be extinguished and unable to cause any harm. If Venus (Tai Bai Star) or Mars enters the region of the Southern Dipper constellation, causing various obstacles and calamities to the country, the family, and the regions under their jurisdiction, then in front of an image of a wrathful deity, draw the image of a Shatru (enemy), loudly recite this Dharani and empower it with mantras, and the calamity will immediately be eliminated and transferred to those who disobey the king's commands and are rebellious. 處。所屬宮宿。災難競起。或鎮星陵逼。或進或退。及宿世冤家欲相謀害。諸惡橫事口舌厭禱咒詛。以為災難者。令諸眾生依法受持。一切災難悉皆消滅不能為害。變災為福皆得吉祥。我今說此陀羅尼不可思議功德無比。秘密受持勿妄宣傳。爾時如來告諸四眾。若有國界不安災難並起。請清凈眾如法建立道場。安置佛像結界護持。香華燈燭隨分供養。令諸有情獲福無量。其災即除。爾時如來說是陀羅尼經已。時曼殊室利菩薩摩訶薩。及諸聲聞四眾游空大天。及諸星辰一切聖眾。咸依佛敕頂禮奉持各還本宮。及天龍八部一切大眾。聞佛所說皆大歡喜信受奉行。

【English Translation】 English version: place. The corresponding constellations and palaces. Various disasters arise together. Or Saturn is approaching, either advancing or retreating. And enemies from past lives want to harm each other. All kinds of evil misfortunes, gossips, witchcraft, curses, can become disasters. Cause all sentient beings to receive and uphold this Dharani according to the Dharma, all disasters can be completely eliminated, unable to cause any harm, turning disasters into blessings, and all can obtain auspiciousness. I am now expounding the inconceivable merits of this Dharani, which are incomparably supreme. Secretly uphold it, do not promote it casually. At this time, the Tathagata told the fourfold assembly that if a country is unstable and disasters occur together, then invite pure Sangha to establish a Mandala according to the Dharma, place Buddha statues, establish boundaries for protection, and offer incense, flowers, lamps, and candles according to one's ability, so that all sentient beings can obtain immeasurable blessings, and these disasters can be eliminated. At this time, after the Tathagata finished speaking this Dharani Sutra, Manjushri Bodhisattva Mahasattva (Manjushri Bodhisattva Mahasattva), as well as the Shravakas, the fourfold assembly, the great heavenly beings wandering in the sky, as well as the stars and all the holy assembly, all followed the Buddha's teachings, prostrated and upheld them, and returned to their respective palaces. And the Eight Classes of Gods and Dragons and all the great assembly, hearing what the Buddha said, were all very happy, believed and accepted it, and followed it accordingly.
