稽首一切智。

如是我聞。一時佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。與大比丘眾八千人俱。菩薩三萬二千。逮得正智照明諸法。于知所知了無掛礙。其名曰觀自在菩薩得大趣菩薩。彌勒菩薩文殊師利童真菩薩。蓮華勝藏菩薩手金剛菩薩。持地菩薩虛空藏菩薩。除一切障菩薩普賢菩薩而為上首。如是等三萬二千菩薩摩訶薩眾。復有萬梵摩天。善吒梵摩而為上首。從餘生界來詣佛所俱在會集。

復有萬二千諸釋天眾。與無量天龍夜叉乾闥婆阿修羅迦樓羅緊那羅摩睺羅伽人非人等俱來在會。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Victorious Dharani of the Buddha's Crown

Translated by Imperial Order by Du Xingyi of Jingzhao during the Great Tang Dynasty

I prostrate to the All-Knowing One.

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti, together with eight thousand great Bhikshus and thirty-two thousand Bodhisattvas. They had attained Right Knowledge, illuminating all dharmas, and were unhindered in their knowledge of what is to be known. Their names were Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Avalokitesvara, also known as Guanyin Bodhisattva), the Bodhisattva Who Attains Great Meaning, Maitreya Bodhisattva (Maitreya), Manjusri Kumara Bodhisattva (Manjusri), Lotus Victorious Treasury Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva (Vajrapani), Earth-Holding Bodhisattva, Akasagarbha Bodhisattva (Akasagarbha), All-Obstacle-Removing Bodhisattva, and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (Samantabhadra), who were the foremost among them. Thus, there were thirty-two thousand Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. There were also ten thousand Brahma heavens, with Shanta Brahma as their leader, who came from other realms to the Buddha's abode and gathered together.

There were also twelve thousand Shakra heavens, together with immeasurable Devas (gods), Nagas (dragons), Yakshas (Yaksa, spirits), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), Asuras (demons), Garudas (large mythical birds), Kinnaras (celestial musicians, half-human, half-bird), Mahoragas (great serpents), humans, non-humans, and others, who came together for the assembly.

At that time, the Blessed One was surrounded by the four assemblies, who respectfully made offerings and listened to his teachings. Then, in the Sudharma Hall of the Trayastrimsa Heaven (Trayastrimsa), there was a Deva named Susthita, residing in a great jeweled palace, enjoying great happiness. Many courtesans attended to him, and he amused himself with games and leisurely strolls, indulging in all his desires. Suddenly, in the night, a voice called out to the Deva Susthita: 'Your life is coming to an end; in seven days you will die. After death, you will be reborn seven times in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa), falling into hell. Afterwards, you may be reborn as a human, but you will be poor and blind, suffering all kinds of afflictions.' Upon hearing this, Susthita was terrified, his hair stood on end, and he was filled with sorrow. He rushed to the abode of Shakra Devanam Indra (Sakra Devanam Indra), prostrated himself at the feet of the heavenly emperor, and reported to him in a panic, begging the emperor to have mercy and save him from his suffering: 'I am enjoying the pleasures of the heavens, indulging in all my desires. Suddenly, a voice said that I will die in seven days, and after seven rebirths in Jambudvipa, I will fall into hell. Afterwards, I may be reborn as a human, but I will be poor and blind, suffering all kinds of afflictions. Now I am distraught, my mind is confused, and I do not know what to do. I beseech the emperor to have compassion and save me from my suffering.'

【English Translation】 English version Poison. Śakro devānām indraḥ (釋提桓因, the lord of gods) heard these words and felt deep sorrow and astonishment, thinking, 'Why must one undergo seven rebirths?' He silently pondered for a moment and then saw that Sudatta (善住) had died here and been reborn as a pig. After the life of a pig, he was reborn as a dog. After the life of a dog, he was reborn as a fox. After the life of a fox, he was reborn as a monkey. After the life of a monkey, he was reborn as a venomous snake. After the life of a snake, he will be reborn as a vulture. After the life of a vulture, he will be reborn as a crow. Thus, for seven rebirths, he will constantly feed on filthy and foul things.' Seeing these things, Śakro devānām indraḥ deeply pitied Sudatta, who was about to suffer great pain, and thought, 'What should be done? Where to start? Who can save him?' After much thought, he concluded that only the Tathāgata (如來), Arhat (阿羅訶, worthy of offerings), Samyaksaṃbuddha (三藐三佛陀, perfectly enlightened one) could save him. Therefore, in the latter part of that night, the lord of gods brought various flower garlands, various incenses, powdered incense, burning incense, heavenly garments, necklaces, and various ornaments, and went to the place where the Buddha, the Holy One, was in Jetavana (祇林). He prostrated at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him seven times, made grand offerings, and then sat down on one side in front of the Buddha, explaining the matter of Sudatta in detail to the Holy One. At that time, the Tathāgata emitted great light from the crown of his head. That light was multicolored, illuminating all the worlds of sentient beings in the ten directions, and then returned to the Buddha's location, circumambulated him three times, and entered from the Buddha's mouth. The Buddha then smiled and said to Śakro devānām indraḥ, 'There is the Buddhoshnisha-vijaya-dharani (佛灌頂清凈諸趣佛頂尊勝陀羅尼), which can purify all destinies, cleanse all karmic obstacles, and the sufferings of birth and death in hell, the animal realm, and Yamaloka (閻摩盧迦, the realm of Yama), break the path to hell, and elevate one to the path of Buddhahood. Lord of gods, this pure Buddhoshnisha-vijaya-dharani, merely by hearing it, will cause all karmic obstacles and various sufferings of continuous birth and death to be completely eliminated. One will obtain good results, gain the knowledge of past lives (jātismaraṇa-jñāna, 宿命智), be reborn from one Buddha-land to another, from one heaven to another, even up to the Thirty-three Heavens (Trāyastriṃśa), and always know one's past lives. Those who can learn and uphold this dharani will have their lifespan extended beyond the current limit of one hundred years, their body, speech, and mind will be purified, their hearts will be peaceful and happy, all physical sufferings will be eliminated, and they will obtain all kinds of good sensations. The Buddhas will watch over them, the gods will protect them, and all Bodhisattvas will lovingly remember them. Those who recite this dharani will have all hells, animal realms, Yamaloka, and various hungry ghosts cease, be eliminated, and dissipate, and their realms will become empty. All Buddha-lands, Bodhisattva heavens, will open the gates of blessings and guide them to enter.' Thereupon, Śakro devānām indraḥ stepped forward and said to the Buddha, 'Holy One, please have compassion and protect us.'

【English Translation】 English version: All sentient beings, I only wish to speak the Pure Paths Buddha-Top Victory Dharani (a dharani that enables sentient beings to escape all evil paths) for you. At that time, the Holy One (the Buddha) accepted the request of the Heavenly Emperor (Śakra, or Indra), and immediately spoke the dharani, saying: Namo Bhagavate Trailokyaprati-viśiṣṭāya Buddhāya (Homage to the Blessed One, the most excellent in the three realms, the Awakened One). O, Indra (Heavenly Emperor), this Pure All Destinies Buddha-Top Victory Dharani purifies all karmic obstacles and eliminates all evil destinies. It is commonly proclaimed, protected, joyfully praised by eighty-eight kotis (koti, an ancient Indian unit of counting, equivalent to ten million) hundreds of thousands of Ganges river sands of Buddhas. All Tathagatas seal it with the wisdom seal. It is for eliminating all evil destinies of all sentient beings, especially those in evil paths such as hells, animals, Yama's world (Yama's world, meaning hells), who are drowning in the sea of suffering, enduring various painful torments, for the sake of their liberation. Also, for the sake of those short-lived, with little merit, lowly, base, with heavy evil karma sentient beings, as well as those who are about to fall into hell, experience various life forms, encounter premature death, lose their minds, and stray from the right path, this Dharani is proclaimed, so that they can cultivate in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, referring to the world we live in), purify their karmic debts, and ultimately attain liberation. O, Indra, you should uphold this Victory Dharani and proclaim it for the well-dwelling Deva. You should propagate, recite, contemplate, practice, respectfully offer, uphold, and cultivate it for the sentient beings of Jambudvipa, all Devas, and all sentient beings. I now entrust it to you with the seal teaching agreement of the Dharani, O, Indra, you should uphold it well. Those who hear this Dharani will have their accumulated karmic obstacles purified in hundreds of thousands of kalpas, will not fall into hell, will not be reborn as animals, in Yama's world, as hungry ghosts, or in other evil destinies, nor will they suffer the bodies of Asuras, Yakshas, Rakshasas, as well as Putanas (Putana, a type of evil ghost), Kataputanas (Kataputana, also a type of evil ghost), epilepsy, and other ghosts and spirits, even dogs, turtles, birds, beasts, mosquitoes, gadflies, poisonous snakes, and other crawling creatures, as well as various small insects, will no longer suffer these retributions. They will always be with the Buddha, or be reborn into the noble families of Bodhisattvas, or be reborn into wealthy families such as Brahmins (Brahmin, the priestly class in Hinduism), Kshatriyas (Kshatriya, the warrior and ruler class in Hinduism), great lay practitioners (lay practitioners, Buddhist believers who practice at home). By the power of this Dharani, they will obtain pure rebirths, until they attain Bodhi and achieve complete and perfect enlightenment. O, Indra, this Pure All Destinies Victory Dharani has vast divine power, possesses great merit and benefits, has great power, and is a sign of great auspiciousness.


如日藏寶珠皎潔無垢凈若虛空。所在之處光明照朗。此陀羅尼所置之處。威神洽被亦復如是。持此陀羅尼者。一切罪惡皆不能染。柔和潤澤清凈無垢如閻浮檀金。書寫讀習誦唸供養。受持修行此陀羅尼者。當知此處地獄業除諸趣咸凈。書此陀羅尼安置幢上。樹于高山或高屋上。及余高處或浮圖中。若比丘比丘尼優婆塞優婆夷善男子善女人等。見此陀羅尼幢。若近幢若幢影沾身若幢風吹身。或為幢風飄塵著身。罪業便消。不生地獄畜生閻摩盧迦餓鬼阿修羅中。不墮諸惡趣一切如來諸佛當與授記。得不退轉至登正覺。以種種華香。種種諸鬘種種幢傘。幡蓋瓔珞諸莊嚴具。並諸塗飾修大供養。於四衢道造塔。安置此陀羅尼行道頂禮。當知此輩是摩訶薩。佛之法子法之樑柱舍利之塔。

爾時閻摩法王。其夜將曉來詣佛所。以種種天華種種諸香。雜香燒香天衣瓔珞。修大供養右繞七匝。頂禮佛足白佛言聖尊。我知佛恩非不知恩。今為報佛恩故擁護一切。常勤奉事此大威力大功果陀羅尼。閉地獄門凈諸惡趣。

爾時四天王繞佛三匝前白佛言。唯愿聖尊說此陀羅尼修行之法。佛告四天王諦聽諦聽我今當說。若有命短求長壽者。當於白月十五日澡浴清凈。著凈潔衣受八戒齋。誦此陀羅尼千遍。諸障便除病癒壽增獲大安樂。

【English Translation】 English version: May all the sufferings of hell, animals, and other evil realms be completely liberated. Furthermore, if beings in the animal realm and other evil realms hear this Dharani (Dharani: a concise summary of the essence of Buddhist teachings), they will no longer be reborn in evil realms. Those suffering from severe illnesses will have their diseases dispelled, and all realms will be purified. After death, they will be reborn in realms of joy, manifesting in lotus flowers, free from the suffering of being born from a womb, and will always know their past lives. If beings are drawn by sinful karma and fall into evil realms after death, one should chant this Dharani over soil twenty-one times and scatter it over their bones. Wherever they are reborn, whether in hell, as animals, in Yamaloka (Yamaloka: the realm of Yama, the lord of death), or as hungry ghosts, even in Avici Hell (Avici Hell: the most painful of the eight great hells), as birds, beasts, or insects, they will all be freed from their suffering and reborn in the heavens to enjoy happiness. Reciting this Dharani twenty-one times daily will eliminate sins, increase blessings, and be loved and respected by all. After death, one will be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. If one constantly recites and upholds this Dharani, one will be reborn in various pure lands after death, traveling from one Buddha-land (Buddha-land: the land where a Buddha resides) to another, radiating great light in all Buddha-fields, always being with the Buddha, protected and nurtured by all Buddhas, and receiving predictions of future Buddhahood (predictions of future Buddhahood: prophecies of future enlightenment). Ultimately, one will attain the joy of great Nirvana (Nirvana: the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice, liberation from the cycle of rebirth). Those who practice this Dharani should construct a square altar, level on all sides, scatter various pure flowers, and burn various incenses. Kneel on the right knee, with single-minded devotion, universally remembering all Buddhas in the ten directions. Bring the palms together, forming a claw-like mudra (mudra: a symbolic hand gesture), and place it before the heart. Bend the two index fingers and two thumbs, pressing them against each other. Chant 'Sadhu' (Sadhu: well done, good), and recite this Dharani one hundred and eight times. This is equivalent to making offerings and serving eighty-eight kotis (kotis: an ancient Indian unit of counting, equivalent to ten million) of Ganges sands (Ganges sands: an extremely large number, like the sands in the Ganges River) of nayutas (nayutas: an ancient Indian unit of counting, equivalent to ten million) of hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. Whoever wishes to recite this Dharani should sincerely and properly form the claw-like mudra with palms together. This is the method of practicing the Dharani. The Buddha told Shakra Devendra (Shakra Devendra: the lord of the Trayastrimsha Heaven). Heavenly King, you should use this Dharma to rescue beings from all the sufferings of hell and other realms, purify the karmic obstacles of all realms, and obtain the fruit of longevity. Heavenly King, you should transmit this Dharani to the Good Abode Deva (Good Abode Deva: a deva in the heavenly realm). After seven days, you and the Good Abode Deva should come to me. Shakra Devendra received the Buddha's teachings and returned.

【English Translation】 English version: In the Trayastrimsa Heaven, the Buddha imparted this Uṣṇīṣa Vijaya Dhāraṇī (Victorious Dhāraṇī of the Buddha's Crown) to the Deva Sudatta (Well-Dwelled). Having received it, Sudatta practiced and made offerings for six days and six nights. By the seventh day, all karmic obstacles leading to the evil realms were liberated, and he dwelt in the blissful heavenly abode, obtaining great longevity.
