如是我聞。一時薄伽梵。在室羅筏城逝多林給孤獨園。與大苾芻眾千二百五十人俱。菩薩摩訶薩萬二千人俱。爾時三十三天善法堂會。有一天子名曰善住。與諸大天並諸天女。前後圍繞受勝尊貴。歡娛遊戲種種天樂。共相娛樂受諸快樂。爾時善住天子。于其夜分聞有聲言。善住天子卻後七日決欲命終。於此沒後生贍部洲。便受七返傍生之身。次受地獄苦從地獄出。希得人身生貧賤家。處於母胎即無兩目。善住天子聞此聲已。身毛皆豎生大怖懼。愁憂不樂惶怖無計。即便速疾往詣天帝釋所。悲號啼哭。頂禮天帝二足尊已白帝釋曰。惟愿天尊聽我所說。我與天女共相圍繞。受快樂時聞有聲言。善住天子卻後七日命將欲終。命終之後生贍部洲。便受七返傍生之身。次受地獄苦從地獄出。希得人身生貧賤家。在母胎中即無兩目。我聞斯語惶怖無計。云何令我得免斯苦。

爾時天帝釋聞善住天子語已。甚大驚愕諦想思惟。此之善住受何七返惡趣之身。須臾靜住注想諦觀。便見善住當受七返惡趣之身。所謂䐗狗野干。獼猴蟒蛇烏鷲等身。食諸穢惡不凈之物

如是我聞(Ewam me suta,我親自聽聞)。一時,薄伽梵(Bhagavan,世尊)在室羅筏城(Sravasti)的逝多林(Jetavana)給孤獨園(Anathapindika-arama)。與大比丘眾一千二百五十人在一起,菩薩摩訶薩(Bodhisattva-Mahasattva,大菩薩)一萬二千人在一起。當時,三十三天(Trayastrimsa Heaven)的善法堂集會。有一位天子名叫善住(Supratisthita),與諸大天以及天女們,前後圍繞,享受殊勝的尊貴,歡娛遊戲,演奏各種天樂,共同娛樂,享受各種快樂。這時,善住天子在夜裡聽到有聲音說:『善住天子,再過七日,必定命終。在此死後,將投生贍部洲(Jambudvipa,人間),便要承受七次轉生為傍生(動物)之身。之後還要受地獄之苦,從地獄出來后,希望得到人身,卻會出生在貧賤之家,並且在母胎中就沒有雙眼。』善住天子聽到這個聲音后,全身毛髮豎立,產生極大的恐懼,愁眉不展,憂慮不樂,惶恐不安,不知如何是好。他立刻快速地前往天帝釋(Sakra,帝釋天)的住所,悲傷地哭泣,頂禮天帝的二足,然後對帝釋說:『惟愿天尊聽我說。我與天女們共同圍繞,享受快樂時,聽到有聲音說:『善住天子,再過七日,壽命將盡。命終之後,將投生贍部洲,便要承受七次轉生為傍生之身。之後還要受地獄之苦,從地獄出來后,希望得到人身,卻會出生在貧賤之家,在母胎中就沒有雙眼。』我聽到這些話,惶恐不安,不知如何才能免除這些痛苦?』

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Dharani Sutra of the Victorious Crown

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Yijing of the Great Tang Dynasty under Imperial Decree

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (World Honored One) was in the Jeta Grove (Jetavana) of the Anathapindika Garden (Anathapindika-arama) in Sravasti (Sravasti). He was with a gathering of twelve hundred and fifty great Bhikshus (monks), and twelve thousand Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas). At that time, in the Sudharma Hall of the Trayastrimsa Heaven (Heaven of Thirty-three), there was a Deva (god) named Supratisthita (Well-Established). He was surrounded by many great Devas and Devis (goddesses), enjoying supreme honor and nobility, delighting in games, various heavenly music, and mutually entertaining each other, experiencing all kinds of happiness. Then, in the middle of the night, Deva Supratisthita heard a voice saying: 'Deva Supratisthita, in seven days you will surely die. After death, you will be reborn in Jambudvipa (the human world), and you will undergo seven rebirths as animals (beings of the animal realm). After that, you will suffer the pain of hell. After emerging from hell, you may hope to obtain a human body, but you will be born into a poor and lowly family, and while still in your mother's womb, you will be without eyes.' Upon hearing this voice, Deva Supratisthita's hair stood on end, and he was filled with great fear. He was sad, worried, unhappy, and terrified, not knowing what to do. He immediately and quickly went to the abode of Sakra (Indra, the Lord of the Devas), weeping and wailing. He prostrated himself at the feet of Sakra and said: 'May the Honorable One listen to what I have to say. When I was surrounded by the Devis, enjoying happiness, I heard a voice saying: 'Deva Supratisthita, in seven days your life will come to an end. After death, you will be reborn in Jambudvipa, and you will undergo seven rebirths as animals. After that, you will suffer the pain of hell. After emerging from hell, you may hope to obtain a human body, but you will be born into a poor and lowly family, and while still in your mother's womb, you will be without eyes.' Hearing these words, I am terrified and do not know how to escape this suffering.'

At that time, upon hearing the words of Deva Supratisthita, Sakra was greatly astonished and pondered deeply. Which seven rebirths in evil realms would this Supratisthita undergo? After a moment of quiet contemplation, he focused his attention and observed carefully. He then saw that Supratisthita would undergo seven rebirths in evil realms, namely as a pig, dog, jackal, monkey, snake, crow, and vulture. He would eat all kinds of filthy and impure things.


。爾時帝釋觀見善住天子。當墮七返惡趣身已。極軫慈念愁憂苦惱痛貫身心。諦思何計何所歸依。誰能覆護得免斯苦。復作是念唯有如來應正等覺大慈悲父。令其善住免斯苦耶爾時帝釋作是念已。于初夜分以種種華天妙衣服以自莊嚴。執持花香往逝多林。詣世尊所恭敬供養。頂禮雙足繞七匝已。長跪合掌而白佛言。善住天子聞有聲言。卻後七日命終而受七返傍生惡趣之身。聞此語已極懷憂苦痛貫於心。世尊大慈哀慜利益。云何令得免斯苦耶。

爾時世尊聞此語已。即便微笑于其頂上。放種種光遍照三千大千世界還至佛所。若佛世尊說過去事光從背入。若說未來事光從胸入。若說地獄事光從足下入。若說傍生事光從足跟入。若說餓鬼事光從足指入。若說人事光從膝入。若說力輪王事光從左手掌入。若說轉輪王事光從右手掌入。若說天事光從臍入。若說聲聞事光從口入。若說獨覺事光從眉間入。若說阿耨多羅三藐三菩提事光從頂入。是時光明還至佛所。繞佛三匝從佛口入。爾時世尊告帝釋曰。天帝有陀羅尼。名為如來佛頂尊勝。能凈一切惡趣生死苦惱。又能凈除一切地獄琰摩王界傍生之苦。又破一切地獄之業回趣善道。天帝此佛頂尊勝陀羅尼。不可思議有大神力。若復有人一經于耳。先世所造一切惡業悉皆消滅。當

【English Translation】 English version: At that time, Indra (King of the Gods) observed that Susthita Deva (a celestial being) was about to fall into the evil realms for seven rebirths, his heart filled with compassion and sorrow, pain piercing his body and mind. He earnestly pondered what means there were, where he could take refuge, and who could protect him from this suffering. He further thought, 'Only the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha (title of the Buddha, meaning 'Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One'), the great compassionate father, can enable Susthita to escape this suffering.' Having formed this thought, Indra, in the first part of the night, adorned himself with various flowers and exquisite celestial garments, and holding flowers and incense, went to Jetavana (Jeta's Grove), approached the World-Honored One (Bhagavan, title of the Buddha, meaning 'Blessed One') and made respectful offerings. He prostrated at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him seven times, knelt with palms joined, and said to the Buddha: 'Susthita Deva heard a voice saying that in seven days he will die and be reborn seven times into the evil realms of animals. Upon hearing this, he is extremely worried, and pain pierces his heart. World-Honored One, with great compassion, please have mercy and benefit him. How can he be freed from this suffering?' At that time, upon hearing these words, the World-Honored One smiled, and from the crown of his head emitted various kinds of light, illuminating the three thousand great thousand worlds, and then returning to the Buddha's body. If the Buddha spoke of past events, the light entered from his back. If he spoke of future events, the light entered from his chest. If he spoke of hell, the light entered from beneath his feet. If he spoke of the animal realm, the light entered from his heels. If he spoke of the realm of hungry ghosts, the light entered from his toes. If he spoke of the human realm, the light entered from his knees. If he spoke of the Cakravartin king of strength, the light entered from his left palm. If he spoke of the Cakravartin king, the light entered from his right palm. If he spoke of the heavenly realm, the light entered from his navel. If he spoke of the Sravakas, the light entered from his mouth. If he spoke of the Pratyekabuddhas, the light entered from his brow. If he spoke of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment), the light entered from the crown of his head. These lights returned to the Buddha, circumambulated him three times, and then entered from the Buddha's mouth. At that time, the World-Honored One said to Indra: 'Devendra (King of the Gods), there is a Dharani (a sacred utterance or spell), called the Tathagata Usnisa Vijaya Dharani (The Victorious Dharani of the Buddha's Crown), which can purify all the suffering of birth and death in the evil realms, and can also purify and eliminate all the suffering of hell, Yama's realm (the realm of the King of Death), and the animal realm. It can also break all the karma of hell and turn it towards the path of goodness. Devendra, this Tathagata Usnisa Vijaya Dharani is inconceivable and has great divine power. If someone merely hears it once, all the evil karma created in past lives will be extinguished.'


得清凈勝妙之身。隨所生處憶持不忘。從一佛土至一佛土。從一天界至一天界。乃至遍歷三十三天。所生之處憶持不忘。複次天帝若人慾終。須臾憶念此陀羅尼還得增壽。身口意凈亦無苦痛。隨其福利悉蒙安隱。亦令一切如來之所瞻視。一切天神常為侍衛。人所敬重惡障消除。一切菩薩同爲覆護。若有男子女人。須臾讀誦持此陀羅尼者。當知此人所有三惡道苦。破壞消滅無有遺余。諸佛凈土及諸天宮。一切菩薩甚深行愿。隨意游入悉無障礙。是時帝釋一心樂聞。

爾時薄伽梵觀察帝釋心之所念。以大慈悲心說是陀羅尼法。即說咒曰。

【English Translation】 English version To obtain a pure, supremely wonderful body. Wherever one is born, one will remember and not forget. From one Buddha-land to another Buddha-land, from one heaven to another heaven, even traversing the Thirty-three Heavens (one of the six heavens of the desire realm in Buddhist cosmology), one will remember and not forget wherever one is born. Furthermore, O Lord of the Gods (Śakra, a protector deity in Buddhism), if a person is about to die and momentarily remembers this Dharani (a mnemonic device, a mantra), he will also gain increased lifespan, purity of body, speech, and mind, and will be without suffering. According to his blessings, he will receive peace and security, and will also be watched over by all the Tathagatas (Buddhas). All the gods will constantly be his attendants, he will be respected by people, evil obstacles will be eliminated, and all the Bodhisattvas will jointly protect him. If there are men and women who momentarily recite and uphold this Dharani, know that all the sufferings of the three evil paths (hell, hungry ghosts, animals) will be destroyed and eliminated, with nothing remaining. The pure lands of all the Buddhas and the palaces of all the heavens, the profound practices and vows of all the Bodhisattvas, one can freely enter into them without any obstacles. At this time, Śakra listened with wholehearted joy.

At that time, the Bhagavan (Buddha), observing the thoughts in Śakra's mind, spoke this Dharani Dharma with great compassion, and then spoke the mantra:

Namo Bhagavate Tri-lokya Prati-visistaya Buddhaya Bhagavate Tadyatha Om Visuddhaya Sama-samanta Abha-vasa Spharana-gati Gahana Svabhava Visuddhe Abhisincatu Mam Sugata Vara Vachana Amrita Abhisheke Ahara Ahara Ayuh Sandharani Suddhaya Suddhaya Gagana Visuddhe Usnisa Vijaya Visuddhe Sahasra-rasmi Samchodi Te Sarva Tathagata Adhisthana Adhisthite Bodhi-dhri Vajra-kaya Samghatana Visuddhe Sarva Avarana Visuddhe Prati-nivartaya Ayuh Suddhe Samaya Adhisthite

爾時世尊說此陀羅尼已。告帝釋曰此陀羅尼印名凈除一切惡趣佛頂尊勝陀羅尼法。亦能除滅一切罪業等障。能凈一切穢惡道苦。天帝此陀羅尼。八十八弶伽沙俱胝百千諸佛。同共宣說隨喜受持。以大日如來智印印之。為破一切有情三惡趣網。為令一切地獄傍生琰摩王界之所有情而得解脫。眾苦逼迫墮生死海有情得解脫故。亦令短命薄福現無救護眾生。樂造雜染惡業有情得饒益故。此陀羅尼于贍部洲住持力故。又令邪見不信善惡三惡趣中。種種流轉生死苦惱。薄福有情迷失正路。如是等類無不蒙益。擔悉令解脫眾苦重。

佛告天帝我今宣說此陀羅尼付囑于汝。汝當授與善住天子。令其受持讀誦思惟。愛敬供養憶

爾時,世尊(釋迦牟尼佛)說此陀羅尼已,告訴帝釋(忉利天之主)說:『此陀羅尼印名為凈除一切惡趣佛頂尊勝陀羅尼法,也能除滅一切罪業等障礙,能凈化一切穢惡道的痛苦。天帝,此陀羅尼,由八十八弶伽沙俱胝百千諸佛共同宣說、隨喜受持,以大日如來(毗盧遮那佛)的智印印證,爲了破除一切有情眾生的三惡趣之網,爲了讓一切地獄、傍生、琰摩王界的所有有情眾生都能得到解脫,使受眾苦逼迫、墮入生死海的有情眾生得到解脫,也讓短命薄福、現在沒有救護的眾生,以及喜歡造作雜染惡業的有情眾生得到饒益。此陀羅尼在贍部洲(我們所居住的這個世界)有住持的力量,又能使邪見、不信善惡、在三惡趣中種種流轉、遭受生死苦惱、薄福的有情眾生,以及迷失正路的人們,都無不蒙受利益,全部都能解脫眾多的痛苦。』

佛告訴帝釋說:『我現在宣說此陀羅尼,並把它託付給你。你應當把它授予善住天子,讓他受持、讀誦、思惟、愛敬、供養、憶念。』

At that time, the World Honored One (Sakyamuni Buddha), having spoken this Dharani, said to Di Shi (Lord of Trayastrimsa Heaven): 'This Dharani seal is named the Pure Removal of All Evil Destinies Buddha-Top Victory Dharani Dharma. It can also eliminate all karmic obstacles and purify all the suffering of the impure and evil paths. Heavenly Lord, this Dharani is jointly proclaimed and joyfully upheld by eighty-eight Ganges sand kotis hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. It is sealed with the wisdom seal of Mahavairocana Tathagata (Vairocana Buddha) in order to break the net of the three evil destinies of all sentient beings, to liberate all sentient beings in hell, as animals, and in the realm of King Yama, to liberate sentient beings oppressed by suffering and fallen into the sea of birth and death, and to benefit sentient beings who are short-lived, have little merit, have no protection, and enjoy creating defiled and evil karma. This Dharani has the power to abide in Jambudvipa (the world we live in), and it can also benefit those sentient beings with wrong views, disbelief in good and evil, various transmigrations in the three evil destinies, suffering from the pain of birth and death, little merit, and those who have lost their way, so that all of them can be liberated from the heavy burden of suffering.'

The Buddha told Di Shi: 'I will now proclaim this Dharani and entrust it to you. You should give it to the Good Abiding Heavenly Son, so that he may uphold, recite, contemplate, love, respect, make offerings, and remember it.'


持莫忘。亦令贍部洲中一切有情。廣宣流佈此陀羅尼利益無量。亦為一切諸天子等。說此大陀羅尼印付囑于汝。天帝汝當正意憶持。勤加守護勿令忘失。

複次天帝。若復有人須臾得聞此陀羅尼。千劫已來積集重障惡業之罪。應受種種生死流轉。地獄餓鬼傍生琰摩王界。阿蘇羅身藥叉鬼神。布單那羯吒布單那阿波娑摩啰。蚊虻龜狗蟒蛇等身。一切諸鳥及諸猛獸。一切有情乃至蟻子之身。更不重受便得轉生。諸佛世尊一生補處菩薩同會一處。或得大姓婆羅門家生。或生剎帝利種及以豪貴最勝家生。天帝此人身等。如上勝處生者。皆由聞此陀羅尼故。隨所生處皆得清凈勝妙之身。天帝如是果報乃至菩提最勝之處。皆由讚歎此陀羅尼殊勝功德。

天帝此陀羅尼名為吉祥。何以故能除一切三惡道故。此佛頂尊勝陀羅尼。猶如日藏摩尼之寶。凈無瑕翳猶若虛空。光焰照徹無不周遍。若諸有情凈心持此陀羅尼者亦復如是。如善好金明凈柔軟令人喜見。不為穢惡之所染著。亦如蓮華飛塵不染。天帝持此陀羅尼者亦復如是。乘此凈業必生善趣。天帝此陀羅尼隨所方處。若能如是書寫受持。聽聞讚誦恭敬供養者。一切惡道皆得清凈。諸地獄苦速能消滅。

Also, for all the sons of gods, I speak this great Dharani seal and entrust it to you. Deva (referring to Indra, the lord of gods), you should remember it with a correct mind, diligently protect it, and do not let it be forgotten. Furthermore, Deva, if someone hears this Dharani even for a moment, the accumulated heavy obstacles and sins from thousands of kalpas (aeons), which should cause them to undergo various cycles of birth and death, such as in hells, as hungry ghosts, as animals, in the realm of Yama (the king of the underworld), in the bodies of Asuras (demi-gods), as Yakshas (a type of spirit), ghosts, Putanas (a type of evil spirit), Kataputanas (another type of evil spirit), Apasamaras (a type of epileptic demon), mosquitoes, turtles, dogs, pythons, all kinds of birds and fierce beasts, all sentient beings, even the body of an ant, they will not have to undergo these again, and they will be able to be reborn in the same place as the Buddhas and the Bodhisattvas who are in their last life before Buddhahood, or be born into a high-caste Brahmin (priest) family, or be born into the Kshatriya (warrior) caste, or into the most noble and wealthy family. Deva, these people, born in such excellent places as mentioned above, are all due to hearing this Dharani. Wherever they are born, they will obtain a pure and excellent body. Deva, such rewards, even up to the most excellent place of Bodhi (enlightenment), are all due to praising the supreme merits of this Dharani. Deva, this Dharani is called auspicious. Why? Because it can remove all the sufferings of the three evil paths (hell, hungry ghosts, animals). This Ushnisha Vijaya Dharani (Victorious Buddha-crown Dharani) is like the Suryagarbha-mani jewel (a precious gem), pure and without blemish, like the void, its light shines through, without not being all-pervasive. If sentient beings hold this Dharani with a pure mind, it is also like this. Like fine gold, bright, clean, soft, and pleasing to see, not defiled by filth. It is also like a lotus flower, not stained by dust. Deva, those who hold this Dharani are also like this, relying on this pure karma, they will surely be reborn in good realms. Deva, wherever this Dharani is, if one can write, receive, hold, listen to, recite, respectfully venerate, and make offerings to it, all evil paths will be purified, and the sufferings of all hells will be quickly extinguished. Deva, if there are men and women who write this Dharani and place it on a high banner, or place it on a high mountain, or place it in a tower.

All the suffering of hell, all birds and beasts, and even living beings, upon hearing the sound of this dharani (總持), once it enters their ears, after this life, they will no longer endure all kinds of suffering. The Buddha said that if someone suddenly encounters a severe illness and is oppressed by various sufferings, hearing this dharani will enable them to be forever free from all evil diseases and eliminate all sufferings. If they are destined to fall into evil paths, they can also be liberated and be reborn in the World of Wonderful Joy (Abhirati). After this life, they will no longer be born from the womb, but will be born from lotuses wherever they are. Wherever they are born, they will always be able to remember their past lives without forgetting.

The Buddha said that if someone has previously committed all kinds of extremely heavy karma and then dies, due to this evil karma, they should fall into hell, or be born as animals (傍生), in the realm of Yama (琰摩王), or in the realm of hungry ghosts, or even fall into Naraka (捺洛迦), or be born in water, or as various kinds of birds and beasts. Take a portion of the deceased's remains, a handful of pure earth, and chant this dharani over it twenty-one times, scattering it on the remains. The deceased will be reborn in heaven. The Buddha said that if someone can constantly recite this dharani twenty-one times every day, they will eliminate all the supreme offerings of the world and be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss (Sukhavati). If they constantly recite it, they will also increase their lifespan and enjoy all kinds of happiness. After this life, they will be reborn in various wonderful Buddha lands, constantly gathering with all the Buddhas in one place. All the Tathagatas will constantly expound the wonderful Dharma for them, and all the Buddhas will bestow predictions of enlightenment (bodhi-vyākaraṇa). Their body's light will illuminate all lands, and they will even attain unsurpassed nirvana (涅槃).

Furthermore, if you wish to recite this dharani, first take pure earth and make an altar in front of the Buddha image. Make it square according to its size. Scatter various grasses and flowers on the altar, burn various famous incenses, kneel on both knees or sometimes squat, and constantly contemplate the Buddha in your heart, making the mudra (慕陀羅尼印). First bend the index finger and press it with the thumb, then join the palms together at the heart. Recite the dharani one hundred and eight times. In the altar, it will be like the Cloud King raining down various flowers, which can universally offer to eighty-eight koti (俱胝) Ganges (弶伽沙) sands of nayuta (那庾多) hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. Those Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, will all praise and say.


。善哉善哉此為希有真是佛子。證得無障礙智三昧及菩提心莊嚴三昧。持此陀羅尼者應如是作。

At that time, Indra personally received the dharani teaching before the Bhagavan (世尊), upheld it in his memory, returned to his palace, and gave it to the Deva Susthita. At that time, after the Deva Susthita received this dharani teaching, for six full days and nights, he upheld it according to the Dharma, and all his wishes were fulfilled. He was about to undergo all the suffering of the evil realms, but he was immediately liberated, abiding in the bodhi-paksa (菩提分), and his lifespan increased. Immeasurable blessings and merits gathered like clouds at that time. He rejoiced immeasurably and exclaimed loudly: 『Rare indeed is the Tathagata (如來) who speaks this wonderful Dharma! Rare indeed is the clear proof, so great and immeasurable! The Greatly Compassionate Bhagavan is able to speak this divine mantra for us and all sentient beings, liberating me from the suffering of the evil realms!』 At that time, on the seventh day, Indra, together with the Deva Susthita and all the devas, adorned with flower garlands, carrying wonderful incense, jeweled banners, canopies, heavenly garments, and necklaces, with subtle adornments, came to the Buddha, made offerings, offered heavenly garments and necklaces to the Bhagavan, circumambulated him hundreds of thousands of times, rejoiced with delight, sat on one side, gazing upon the venerable countenance, never taking his eyes away.

At that time, the Bhagavan extended his golden arm and, with his right hand adorned with a hundred blessings, possessing all the marks, and free from fear, stroked the crown of the Deva Susthita and spoke the Dharma for him, bestowing a prediction of enlightenment (vyakarana 菩提記). The Buddha said to the Deva Susthita: 『This dharani seal is named the Sarvadurgatiparisodhana-usnisavijaya-dharani (凈除一切惡趣佛頂尊勝陀羅尼), the Ushnishavijaya Dharani for Purifying All Evil Destinies. You should receive and uphold it.』

At that time, the Deva Susthita, Indra, and all the assembled devas, upon hearing the Buddha's words, were all greatly delighted, believed, accepted, and practiced accordingly.
