夫唸誦陀羅尼法。先於三昧耶曼荼羅。見聖眾得灌頂知本尊。從師受得三昧耶。即于山間閑處或於凈室。畫本尊尊勝陀羅尼像。安於東壁。上持誦者以面對之。其唸誦處掘地深一肘半。地中若有瓦礫骨灰毛髮及諸穢物等。並須除之。若無還取本土。填滿筑令平正。土若有餘其地吉祥。以瞿摩夷和好土。泥地面令平正。又取瞿摩夷和水。誦無能勝陀羅尼二十一遍。加持瞿摩夷。其無能勝真言曰。

【English Translation】 English version The Ritual for Reciting the Uṣṇīṣa Vijaya Dhāraṇī Sūtra, One Fascicle

Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Bukong (Amoghavajra) of the Da Guangzhi Da Xing Shansi Temple, holding the titles of Grand Master of the Three Departments, Special Advanced Official of the Honglu Temple, Duke of Su of the State, enjoying a fief of three thousand households, awarded the Purple Robe, posthumously granted the title of Minister of Public Works, with the posthumous title of Dajian, and the honorary title of Greatly Wise.

To recite the Dhāraṇī, one must first, within the Samaya Mandala (vow-bound sacred circle), behold the holy assembly, receive initiation, and know the principal deity. Having received the Samaya (vow) from the teacher, one should then, in a secluded place in the mountains or in a clean room, paint an image of the principal deity, the Uṣṇīṣa Vijaya Dhāraṇī. Place it on the east wall, so that the reciter faces it. The place for recitation should be dug one and a half cubits deep. If there are tiles, gravel, bone ash, hair, or any impure objects in the ground, they must be removed. If not, take the original soil, fill it back in, and tamp it down to make it level. If there is any soil left over, the land is auspicious. Mix cow dung (Gomaya) with good soil and plaster the ground to make it level. Then take cow dung and water, recite the Unsurpassable Dhāraṇī twenty-one times, and bless the cow dung. The Unsurpassable True Words are as follows:

【English Translation】 English version: The Sutra of the Teaching of the Supreme Victorious Dharani: Reciting this sutra on the fifteenth day of the white month (the first half of the lunar month) can eliminate karmic obstacles, increase blessings, and prolong life. One should aim to recite it one thousand times to attain the Samadhi (禪定) of transcending the world and obtain the Dharani (總持) of non-forgetfulness. On that day, it is best not to eat for a whole day and night, or eating 'three white foods,' namely milk, cheese, and polished rice, or porridge, is moderate, or eating as usual is the lowest. Wear clean clothes and have a sincere and pure faith in your heart, without hesitation. If you wish to recite, first kneel on both knees at the altar, prostrate to Vairocana Buddha (毗盧遮那佛) and the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, confess your sins, and make the Five Great Vows: 1. Vow to deliver sentient beings without limit; 2. Vow to accumulate blessings and wisdom without limit; 3. Vow to learn Dharma doors without limit; 4. Vow to serve the Tathagatas without limit; 5. Vow to achieve unsurpassed Bodhi. 其印相。二手虛心合掌。二頭指各安於中指背。二大指併合。于中指中節上成印。同前五處各誦真言一遍。由此加持自身成被金剛甲冑。一切天魔無能親近。

次結不動尊印真言曰。

曩莫三曼多嚩日啰(二合)喃(一)戰拏摩賀嚧沙拏(二句)薩叵(二合)吒耶(三)吽怛啰(二合)吒憾(引)𤚥(引)

結印二手各以大指。捻小指及無名指甲上。各豎中指頭指並之。左手為鞘右手為刀。以刀入鞘狀右刀印左旋轉辟除道場中諸魔作障者。右旋轉八方結上下方隅界。然後想道場中須彌山。于山頂上想七寶樓閣。于樓閣中。毗盧遮那佛與八十俱胝十地滿足菩薩摩訶薩。以為眷屬而自圍繞。四門四隅各四菩薩及八供養。以內外供養。觀想奉獻。了了分明。

【English Translation】 English version Tad-ma-ku-ham:

Mudra (seal) formation: Cross the backs of both hands. Place the left thumb in the right palm, touching the right thumb, and then recite the mantra three times. This will transform oneself into Vajrasattva (the Buddha Akshobhya of the Vajra realm's five wisdom Buddhas, representing purification).

Next, form the Vajra Armor Mudra, with the following mantra:

Namah samanta vajranam om vajra kavaca hum.

Mudra formation: Hold both hands together with hollow palms. Place each index finger on the back of the middle finger. Join the two thumbs together, forming the mudra on the middle joint of the middle fingers. As before, recite the mantra once at each of the five places on the body. Through this empowerment, one's body becomes covered with Vajra armor, and all demons are unable to approach.

Next, form the Acala (immovable one) Mudra, with the following mantra:

Namah samanta vajranam canda maharosana sphataya hum trat ham mam.

Mudra formation: With each hand, use the thumb to press down on the nail of the little finger and ring finger. Raise the middle finger and index finger together. The left hand acts as a sheath, and the right hand acts as a sword. Make the gesture of inserting the sword into the sheath, and rotate the right sword-mudra to the left to dispel the demons and obstructors in the mandala. Then rotate to the right to establish boundaries in the eight directions, as well as above, below, and in the four corners. Then visualize Mount Sumeru (the sacred mountain in Buddhist cosmology) in the mandala. On the summit of Mount Sumeru, visualize a seven-jeweled pavilion. In the pavilion, visualize Vairocana Buddha (the central Buddha of the five Dhyani Buddhas, representing the Dharmadhatu wisdom) surrounded by eighty kotis (a unit of Indian numbering, one koti equals ten million) of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas (great bodhisattvas) who have fulfilled the ten Bhumis (the ten stages of a bodhisattva's path). At each of the four gates and four corners, there are four bodhisattvas and eight offerings. Visualize offering both inner and outer offerings, clearly and distinctly.

Next, form the Hook Mudra for Inviting the Holy Assembly of Tathagatas, and recite the following mantra:

即以兩手捧器當額。䠒跪誦三遍。奉獻閼伽沐浴聖眾。

【English Translation】 English version (Invocation) Loka (4) Svaha (2 combined, elongated sound) Ha (elongated sound)

Mudra (hand gesture): Interlock the hands inwards, making a fist and raising it. Extend the right hand's index finger, bending it into a hook shape. Recite three times. By the power of this mudra and mantra, all Buddhas, Tathagatas (Thus Come Ones), and the Holy Assembly, not violating their original vows, will all descend.

Next, form the mudra for offering a seat and recite the mantra:

Namo Samanta Buddhanam (elongated sound) Ah (elongated sound, urgent call)

Mudra: Join the palms together with a hollow space inside. Join the two little fingers and two thumbs together. Open and slightly bend the remaining six fingers, like a blooming lotus flower. Recite three times. By the power of this mudra and mantra, all subtle and wonderful jeweled seats flow forth, like a sea of clouds, offered to the Tathagatas and all the Holy Assembly.

Next, offer Arghya (water for washing) and recite the mantra:

Namo Samanta Buddhanam (1) Gagana Sama Sama Svaha (2 combined) Ha (elongated sound)

Hold the vessel with both hands in front of the forehead, kneel down, and recite three times. Offer Arghya to bathe the Holy Assembly.

Next, form the mudra for offering scented paste and recite the mantra:

Mudra: Extend the right palm outwards. Grasp the right wrist with the left hand. Recite three times. By the power of this mudra and mantra, all seas of scented paste flow forth, offered to all Tathagatas and the Holy Assembly.

Next, form the mudra for offering flower garlands and recite the mantra:

Namo Samanta Buddhanam (elongated sound) Maha Maitriyah (3 combined) Vibhyudgataye Svaha (2 combined)

Mudra: Interlock the hands inwards, palms facing upwards. Touch the tips of the index fingers together. Recite three times. By the power of this mudra and mantra, all seas of flower garlands flow forth, offered to all Tathagatas and the Holy Assembly.

Next, form the mudra for offering incense and recite the mantra:

契相虛心密令開掌如器。誦三遍。由此印真言威力。流出無邊飲食雲海。供養一切如來及諸聖眾。

以我功德力  如來加持力  及以法界力  普供養而住

次結虛空藏明妃印真言曰。

手印:右手作拳,豎起中指,以大指捻中指中節。誦咒三遍。由此手印和真言的威力,流出一切燈明雲海,供養一切如來及諸聖眾。又如如來大乘經所說,應當觀想幢、蓋、幡、網、瓔珞、衣服、繒彩等物,諸供養雲海充滿法界,以誠實言伽他而贊曰:

以我功德力  如來加持力  及以法界力  普供養而住

【English Translation】 English version:   Namo Samanta Buddhanam (bow to all Buddhas) (one) Dharma Dhatv-aloka-garbhe (realm of Dharma) gate svaha.

Mudra (hand gesture): With both hands, palms facing upwards. Bend and raise the little finger, middle finger, and ring finger with the backs of the hands facing each other. Recite the mantra three times. By the power of this mudra and mantra, emanate clouds of burning incense to offer to all Tathagatas (the one who comes thus) and all holy beings.

Next, form the mudra of offering food and recite the mantra:

Namo Samanta Buddhanam Arara Kara Marindani Maha Maraye Svaha.

Mudra: With an empty mind, slightly open the palms like a vessel. Recite the mantra three times. By the power of this mudra and mantra, emanate boundless clouds of food to offer to all Tathagatas and all holy beings.

Next, form the mudra of offering light and recite the mantra:

Namo Samanta Buddhanam Tathagata-jyoti-spharana nirbhasa-dhara gagana-kirti-arye svaha.

Mudra: Make a fist with the right hand and raise the middle finger. Press the middle joint of the middle finger with the thumb. Recite the mantra three times. By the power of this mudra and mantra, emanate clouds of light to offer to all Tathagatas and all holy beings. Furthermore, as stated in the Mahayana Sutra spoken by the Tathagata, one should visualize canopies, banners, nets, necklaces, clothing, silk fabrics, and other objects, with clouds of offerings filling the Dharma realm, and praise with a truthful verse:

By the power of my merit, The blessing power of the Tathagata,  And by the power of the Dharma realm, May they abide as universal offerings.

Next, form the mudra of the Wisdom Queen of Akasagarbha (the treasury of space), and the mantra says:

Namo Samanta Buddhanam Sarvatra kham udgate spharana himam gagana kam svaha.

Mudra: Cross the hands and join the palms, with the right hand pressing the left hand. Recite the mantra seven times. Then visualize.


自身於心中有圓明月輪。了了分明。于月輪上想。

欠字。白色放大光明。遍照十方一切世界。思欠字實相義。所謂一切法等同虛空。離諸色相離諸障礙。則于真實理中。觀自身作金剛波羅蜜佛母菩薩像。左手持蓮花。其蓮花上有五股金剛杵。右手作仰掌。垂手為施愿勢。具頭冠瓔珞。面貌慈愍拔濟一切眾生勢。作是觀已。二手外相叉作拳。豎二中指。以此金剛波羅蜜印。加持印於四處。謂印心額喉頂。印已便散手誦金剛波羅蜜真言曰。

唵薩怛嚩(二合)嚩日哩(二合)吽

當印四處時。各誦一遍。即用前印安於額上誦三遍。以為灌頂灌頂已。其印手分兩邊。以金剛拳繼頂后。誦真言曰。

唵嚩日啰(二合引)鼻詵遮

誦三遍。即結被甲印。二手各作金剛拳。各豎頭指當心相纏。如繼甲冑。即于背後亦復如是。次臍次兩膝。卻繞腰后漸當心。次兩肩亦如是繼。次繼頂下項后額前。卻于腦後以兩金剛拳。繼漸垂手兩邊徐徐下。如垂帶勢。即以兩手掌相拍三聲。誦被甲真言曰。

自想己身成本尊已。二手合掌屈二頭指甲相背。以二大指壓二頭指頭。如彈指勢。即誦尊勝陀羅尼曰。

Contemplate the true nature of the syllable 『khaṃ』, which is that all dharmas are equal to space, free from all forms and obstacles. Then, within the realm of true reality, visualize yourself as the Vajraparamita Buddhamata Bodhisattva (Mother Buddha of Vajra Perfection). The left hand holds a lotus flower, upon which rests a five-pronged vajra (diamond scepter). The right hand is in the gesture of giving, palm facing upwards, hand lowered in the varada-mudrā (boon-granting gesture). Adorned with a crown and necklaces, with a compassionate face, rescuing all sentient beings. After completing this visualization, cross the hands externally into fists, and raise the two middle fingers. With this Vajraparamita mudrā, bless and seal the four places: the heart, forehead, throat, and crown of the head. After sealing each place, recite the Vajraparamita mantra, then release the hands and recite the Vajraparamita mantra:

『oṃ sattva vajri hūṃ』

Recite this mantra once when sealing each of the four places. Then, use the previous mudrā and place it on the forehead, reciting it three times as an abhiseka (empowerment). After the abhiseka, separate the hands to both sides, and with the vajra-muṣṭi (diamond fist), continue behind the crown of the head, reciting the mantra:

『oṃ vajra abhiṣiñca』

Recite this three times. Then form the Vajra-kavaca-mudrā (diamond armor mudrā). Make vajra fists with both hands, raise the index fingers, and intertwine them in front of the heart, as if wearing armor. Then do the same behind the back.
