如是我聞。一時佛住毗舍離國大林精舍。與大比丘眾一千二百五十人俱。爾時佛念。卻後三月當入涅槃。即告長老目揵連。汝當至千世界。告比丘僧令到佛所。是時目連受佛教旨。於一念間到須彌山頂。發大音聲遍告一千世界。爾時大林精舍有四十億萬比丘眾。俱到佛所頂禮佛足退坐一面。

爾時長老舍利弗一心思惟。我當以神通之力。遍令三千大千世界有比丘眾處。皆使集此大林精舍。即以神通。遍令三千大千世界。若聲聞眾若緣覺眾若菩薩眾一時來集。到已頂禮佛足。

爾時世尊於一念頃。告諸菩薩。其名曰善見菩薩。文殊師利菩薩。除惡趣菩薩。斷闇冥菩薩。出一切境界竟菩薩。伏諸蓋菩薩。觀世音菩薩。香象菩薩。樂說頂菩薩。彌勒菩薩。善男子汝當到於十方恒河沙等諸佛世界。有諸菩薩一生補處菩薩。阿鞞跋致菩薩。已得無生法忍菩薩。汝當遍告皆來集此。是時諸菩薩聞佛此語。答言善哉善哉。即便受教。於一念頃。以神通力遍集十方恒河沙等諸佛世界一切菩薩

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Great Forest Monastery in the country of Vaishali (毗舍離國). He was with a gathering of twelve hundred and fifty great Bhikshus (比丘). At that time, the Buddha thought: 'In three months, I will enter Nirvana (涅槃).' He then told the elder Maudgalyayana (目揵連): 'You should go to a thousand worlds and tell the Bhikshu Sangha (比丘僧) to come to me.' At that time, Maudgalyayana (目連) received the Buddha's command and, in a single thought, arrived at the summit of Mount Sumeru (須彌山). He emitted a great sound, proclaiming it throughout a thousand worlds. At that time, there were forty billion Bhikshus (比丘) in the Great Forest Monastery, who all came to the Buddha's abode, prostrated themselves at the Buddha's feet, and then withdrew to sit on one side.

At that time, the elder Sariputra (舍利弗) thought with one mind: 'I should use my supernatural powers to cause all the Bhikshus (比丘) in the three thousand great thousand worlds to gather at this Great Forest Monastery.' Then, with his supernatural powers, he caused all the Sravakas (聲聞), Pratyekabuddhas (緣覺), and Bodhisattvas (菩薩) in the three thousand great thousand worlds to gather at once. Having arrived, they prostrated themselves at the Buddha's feet.

At that time, the World Honored One, in a single thought, told the Bodhisattvas: 'Their names are Bhadradarshana Bodhisattva (善見菩薩), Manjushri Bodhisattva (文殊師利菩薩), Sarvadurgati-prashamana Bodhisattva (除惡趣菩薩), Andhakara-vidhvamsa Bodhisattva (斷闇冥菩薩), Sarva-kshetra-nirghata Bodhisattva (出一切境界竟菩薩), Sarva-avarana-vinivarana Bodhisattva (伏諸蓋菩薩), Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva (觀世音菩薩), Gandhahasti Bodhisattva (香象菩薩), Priyavadana Bodhisattva (樂說頂菩薩), Maitreya Bodhisattva (彌勒菩薩). Good men, you should go to the Buddha worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River in the ten directions. There are Bodhisattvas there, Ekajati-pratibaddha Bodhisattvas (一生補處菩薩), Avaivartika Bodhisattvas (阿鞞跋致菩薩), Anutpattika-dharma-kshanti Bodhisattvas (已得無生法忍菩薩). You should universally inform them to all gather here.' At that time, the Bodhisattvas, hearing these words of the Buddha, replied: 'Excellent, excellent.' They then received the teaching and, in a single thought, used their supernatural powers to universally gather all the Bodhisattvas from the Buddha worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River in the ten directions.


。皆悉集此大林精舍。百千三十萬億那由他。一生補處菩薩。阿鞞跋致。已得無生法忍菩薩。百千萬億那由他一生補處菩薩。三十萬億那由他不退無生法忍菩薩。一切皆集俱禮佛足卻坐一面。

【English Translation】 English version: They all gathered at this Mahavana Jeta Vihara (Great Forest Monastery). There were a hundred thousand, thirty million, nayutas (nayuta, a unit of quantity) of Ekajatipratibaddha Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattvas bound by only one more birth, meaning they will become Buddhas in their next life), Avaivartika (non-regressing) Bodhisattvas, and Bodhisattvas who had attained anutpattika-dharma-ksanti (the acceptance of the non-arising of all dharmas). A hundred million nayutas of Ekajatipratibaddha Bodhisattvas, thirty million nayutas of non-regressing Bodhisattvas who had attained the acceptance of the non-arising of all dharmas, all gathered together, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and sat to one side.

At that time, Sariputra (Sariputra), seeing the assembly of Bodhisattvas all thinking with one mind, thought to himself: 'Now I should ask the Tathagata Samyak-sambuddha (the Thus-Come One, the Perfectly and Completely Awakened One) about the Dharma that has not yet been spoken. Because of my asking this question, all the Bodhisattvas should be able to obtain unobstructed eloquence and wisdom, and should be able to hear the Buddhas of the Ganges River sand-number worlds expounding the Dharma, and until they attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unexcelled perfect enlightenment), they should always remember their past lives, and should obtain the four kinds of purity of a Bodhisattva.' What are the four kinds of purity? The purity of beings, the purity of Dharma, the purity of eloquence, and the purity of Buddha-lands. Furthermore, they will obtain four kinds of wonderful qualities. What are the four? A wonderful body, wonderful speech, a wonderful mind, and a wonderful place of birth. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to enter the four kinds of dharani-mukhas (dharani-gates). What are the four? Namely, the dharani-gate of endless reception and retention, the dharani-gate of entering the expedient means of the various faculties of beings, the dharani-gate of unobstructed expedient means of karmic retribution, and the dharani-gate of profound acceptance of the Dharma.' In the order of his thoughts, like a mani-ratna (wish-fulfilling jewel), he said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, now I wish to ask questions in order, so that the virtuous conduct of all the Bodhisattvas may be purified. May the World-Honored One explain this to me.' The Buddha told Sariputra: 'If all you Bodhisattva-mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas) wish to reach all dharmas without being attached to anything, you should recite this mantra:'

Sariputra (舍利弗, one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha). If a Bodhisattva cultivates this Dharani mantra, he does not contemplate conditioned or unconditioned dharmas. He does not speak of this dharma, does not observe this dharma. He does not cling to this dharma, does not create this dharma. He does not seek to attain this dharma, does not extinguish this dharma. He does not seek to increase or decrease, does not see corresponding or non-corresponding dharmas. He does not see arising and ceasing, does not see the three times of past, present, and future. He does not see the dharma of regression, does not see the dharma of gathering and scattering. He has no speech, only cultivates mindfulness of the Buddha. He does not contemplate form, does not contemplate auspicious marks, does not contemplate non-auspicious marks. He does not contemplate precepts, does not contemplate non-precepts. Likewise for concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation. He does not contemplate lineage, relatives, and family. Abode, non-abode, place to arrive, place not to arrive, he does not discriminate the aggregates, realms, and entrances. He does not contemplate wisdom, non-wisdom. He does not contemplate self-purity, other-purity, sentient being purity, non-sentient being purity. He does not act for his own benefit, does not act for the benefit of others. He does not contemplate the purity of the three karmas. He does not contemplate the purity of present and future actions. Sariputra, this is called mindfulness of the Buddha, named as taking in all dharmas, named as obtaining the expedient Dharani for practicing all dharmas. It is also named as cultivating the supreme meaning, also named as fulfilling the desired concentration, named as single-mindedly seeking to attain Bodhi (菩提, enlightenment). It is also named as all good roots not depending on others' cultivation of the Dharma treasury nature, also named as the Dharani covering auspicious marks, also named as the Dharani seeking expedients, also named as the Dharani liberating from demons. Sariputra, this Dharani has boundless practices and vows. If future Bodhisattvas obtain this meaning, they will achieve non-retrogression from Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提, unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment) and will be swift.


得無上道。何以故此是一切諸佛功德藏。此是分別諸眾生行。故此陀羅尼名無所得行。爾時世尊說此祇夜。

【English Translation】 English version Attain the unsurpassed path. Why? Because this dharani (dharani, a type of mantra or incantation) is the treasury of all Buddhas' merits. It distinguishes the practices of all sentient beings. Therefore, this dharani is named 'The Practice of Non-Attainment'. At that time, the World Honored One spoke this gatha (gatha, a verse):

『You should not delight in attachment; all dharmas (dharmas, phenomena) are empty. Towards the bodhi (bodhi, enlightenment) of all Buddhas, do not give rise to discrimination. Do not calculate all dharmas, whether they have faults or are without faults. If one can cultivate this practice, one will quickly attain dharani (dharani, a type of mantra or incantation). Listen to this sutra (sutra, a discourse of the Buddha), it is endless and without extinction. Practice wisdom and accumulate resources; you should attain the unsurpassed path. Bodhisattvas understand the nature of all dharmas; their characteristics are also thus. This dharani gate encompasses all dharmas. This is a true child of the Buddha, who will quickly reach bodhi (bodhi, enlightenment). Those who uphold the dharani are remembered by all the Buddhas. They are respected by sentient beings because of upholding the dharani. In this very life, they can see eighty million nayutas of Buddhas. The Buddhas pat their heads, comforting them and bringing them peace. The Buddha told Sariputra (the foremost disciple in wisdom): If a Bodhisattva accomplishes four Dharmas, he will obtain Dharani. What are the four? Not delighting in love and desire, not being jealous, being able to give up everything for all sentient beings, and contemplating all Dharmas day and night without anger or resentment. Sariputra, if a Bodhisattva accomplishes these four Dharmas, he will obtain this Dharani. At that time, the World Honored One spoke this verse:

Love, desire, and jealousy are the laws of Mara (the demon king), one should fall into hell, Practitioners should give up both wealth and Dharma to give to sentient beings, Contemplating day and night, without anger or resentment, if one can do this, One can obtain Dharani.

Again, Sariputra, if a Bodhisattva accomplishes four Dharmas, he will obtain this Dharani. What are the four? Practicing Aranya (a quiet place) practice, holding deep Dharma forbearance, not delighting in profit, offerings, and fame, and being able to give up everything received, even one's own life. A Bodhisattva who accomplishes these four Dharmas will obtain Dharani. The Buddha spoke this verse:

Practicing Aranya is praised by virtuous people, The body and mind are still and unmoving, always dwelling in the forest. Even if burning the head, one is not negligent, medicine can give rise to deep Dharma forbearance, Fame and profit, offerings, one has no attachment to anything. A pure and undefiled mind is used to seek the unsurpassed path, One can give up all that is cherished, wife, children, and even one's own life. Not giving rise to regret or stinginess, one will eventually return to annihilation, Bodhisattvas diligently practice, cultivating the above four practices, Such Dharani, one will surely be able to obtain soon.

Again, Sariputra, if a Bodhisattva accomplishes four Dharmas, he will obtain this Dharani. What are the four? Entering the meaning of the eight letters. What are the eight letters? The letter 'bha' enters all Dharmas.

After that Buddha entered Nirvana, there was a Chakravartin (chakravartin, wheel-turning king), whose son was named Meritorious Fortune, and he was sixteen years old. 【English Translation】 English version The wonderful Dharma doors spoken by other Buddhas, if one can listen and receive with a focused mind, the Tathagata (如來) will predict that after more than nine hundred thousand lifetimes, one will obtain the Dharani (陀羅尼-mantra) method called 'Grasping the Boundless Door'. After obtaining it, one speaks it for others, benefiting countless beings, enabling them all to dwell in the irreversible Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (無上三菩提- unsurpassed perfect enlightenment). The son of the elder, Moon-Cover, upon hearing the Dharani (陀羅尼), arose with the merit of rejoicing. The Buddhas predicted for him: 'You receive the Dharani (陀羅尼), this is the most excellent. If you speak it for others, there will be none who do not love and rejoice in it. If people have questions, none will be able to refute it. In the future, after three asamkhya kalpas (僧祇劫- countless eons), the beings you convert will all attain the unsurpassed path.' The son of the elder, Moon-Cover, is Dipankara Buddha (然燈如來); the Dharma master who previously spoke the Dharma is Amitabha Buddha (無量壽佛). I and the Bodhisattvas, in the past, upon hearing this Dharani (陀羅尼), for four million kalpas, were not born in any of the evil realms. If a Bodhisattva wishes to attain the unsurpassed, all-knowing path, they should diligently practice and rejoice in the Dharani (陀羅尼). Why is this so? Because they can dwell in the state of non-retrogression. If one can rejoice, the merit is already so great, how much more so for those who write, recite, and explain its meaning? Suppose one were to fill countless worlds like the sands of the Ganges River with the seven treasures, the merit of such giving cannot be compared to the merit of rejoicing in the Dharani (陀羅尼). Therefore, wise people should diligently practice, listen to and receive the Dharani (陀羅尼), in order to seek the unsurpassed path. Sariputra (舍利弗), if a Bodhisattva receives and upholds this Dharani (陀羅尼), there are eight Yakshas (夜叉-demi-gods) dwelling in the Snow Mountains, guarding him day and night to increase his lifespan. Who are the eight? Valiant Yaksha (勇猛夜叉), Firm Yaksha (堅固夜叉), Free Yaksha (自在夜叉), Narayana-strength Yaksha (那羅延力夜叉), Dharma-application Yaksha (法用夜叉), Unrestrainable Yaksha (不可系夜叉), Crooked-teeth Yaksha (曲齒夜叉), Good-shouldered Yaksha (善肩夜叉). 【English Translation】 English version Great Bodhisattvas dwell in the Desire Realm heavens. They should protect and remember those who receive and uphold the dharani. Their names are Guangming Bodhisattva (Illuminating Bodhisattva), Huiguangming Bodhisattva (Wisdom Illuminating Bodhisattva), Riguangming Bodhisattva (Sun Illuminating Bodhisattva), Jiaohua Bodhisattva (Teaching Bodhisattva), Ling yiqie yiman Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva who fulfills all intentions), Dazizai Bodhisattva (Greatly Sovereign Bodhisattva), Suwang Bodhisattva (Constellation King Bodhisattva), Xingyi Bodhisattva (Intention in Action Bodhisattva). These Bodhisattvas obtain the dharani. If a Bodhisattva obtains the dharani, they should fulfill their true vows and be grateful. If a Bodhisattva recites the dharani, they should obtain the true Dharma and share it with all beings.
