【English Translation】 English version The beating caused him great suffering and distress. At that time, the Brahmin, upon hearing these words, felt great fear, sorrow, and distress. He quickly went to the Buddha, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and said to the Buddha, 'Tathagata (如來,one of the titles of a Buddha) , you are the one who saves all sentient beings! I now repent of my faults and take refuge in the World Honored One (世尊,another title of a Buddha). I only hope that you can save me from the suffering of the great hell.' The Buddha said, 'Great Brahmin, at the intersection of three roads in this city of Kapilavastu (迦毗羅城,ancient Indian city), there is an ancient stupa (佛塔,Buddhist monument) containing the relics (舍利,cremated remains of the Buddha or high monks) of the Tathagata. The Buddha continued, 'Brahmin, if there are bhikshus (比丘,ordained monks), bhikshunis (比丘尼,ordained nuns), upasakas (優婆塞,laymen), upasikas (優婆夷,laywomen), or other virtuous men and women who are short-lived or often ill, they should repair old stupas or build small mud stupas, transcribe the dharani mantra according to the proper rituals, and create a mandala (壇場,sacred space) with mantra threads (咒索,threads empowered by mantras). Because of this merit, those whose lives are about to end will have their lifespans extended, and all their illnesses will be cured. They will be forever free from the realms of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. They will not even hear the sounds of hell, let alone suffer the torments of hell.' At that time, the Brahmin, upon hearing these words, was filled with joy and immediately wanted to go to the old, dilapidated stupa to repair it according to the Buddha's teachings. Then, in the assembly, Sarvanivāraṇaviṣkambhin Bodhisattva (除蓋障菩薩,the Bodhisattva who removes all obstacles) rose from his seat, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, what is that dharani dharma that can increase merit and virtuous roots?' The Buddha said, 'There is a great dharani called the Most Excellent, Immaculate, Pure, and Luminous Great Mandala Dharma. The Buddhas use this to comfort sentient beings. If anyone hears this dharani, they can eradicate the five heinous crimes (五逆罪,matricide, patricide, killing an arhat, injuring a Buddha, creating schism in the sangha), close the gates of hell, eliminate the sins of stinginess and jealousy, and those with short lifespans can have their lives extended. 【English Translation】 English version: This Dharani method is for enabling all sentient beings to attain longevity, for purifying and eliminating all sinful obstacles, and for bringing great light to all sentient beings. At that time, the World Honored One, upon hearing this request, emitted great light from the crown of his head, illuminating the three thousand great thousand worlds, universally awakening all the Tathagatas, and then returned to his original place, entering from the crown of the Buddha's head. 力施。當持咒本置於塔中供養此塔。或作小泥塔滿足七十七。各以一本置於塔中而興供養如法作已。命欲盡者而更延壽。一切宿障諸惡趣業悉皆滅盡。永離地獄餓鬼畜生。所生之處常憶宿命。一切所愿皆得滿足。則為已得七十七億諸如來所而種善根。一切眾病及諸煩惱鹹得消除。

若人病重命將欲盡。當爲作方壇。于上畫作種種形狀(所謂輪形金剛杵形蠡形戟形月字形蓮花形四角畫蓮花上安瓶)瓶滿香水置於四角。佈列香爐燒眾名香。以五色缽盛種種食及三白食(謂乳酪粳米飯)復以五缽(各盛香花水及粳米)壇上供養。種種飲食盛滿一器。及水一瓶置壇中心。于壇近邊畫作毗那夜迦像。頂上安燈。將彼病人在於壇西。面向此壇。盛一器食對病人前置於壇上。咒師要須清凈如法。咒此病人七十七遍。令將死之人惛冥七日。命續識還如從夢覺。

若有護凈日別一遍。誦唸此咒滿足百年。是人命終生極樂界。若一切時常唸誦者。乃至菩提恒憶宿命。永離夭壽及諸惡趣。

若復有人為于亡者稱其名字。至心誦咒滿七十七遍。若彼亡人墮惡趣者。應時即得離惡道苦生天受樂。或稱彼名依法書寫此陀羅尼。置佛塔中如法供養。亦令亡者得離惡趣生於天上。或復得生兜率天宮。乃至菩提不墮惡道。

【English Translation】 English version: Good men, good women, if anyone circumambulates this stupa (a mound-like or hemispherical structure containing relics), or prostrates before it, or makes offerings to it, then he/she will receive the prediction of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unexcelled complete and perfect enlightenment) and will never regress. All past karmic obstacles, all sins, will be completely eradicated. They will not fall into the forms of life such as flying birds or animals. Reaching the shadow of this stupa, one will be able to permanently escape the evil realms of the animal path. If someone has committed the five heinous offenses (killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, causing disunity in the Sangha, shedding the blood of a Buddha), or is in the shadow of the stupa, or touches this stupa, all sins can be eliminated and extinguished. Where the stupa is placed, there are no various evil spirits, Yakshas (a type of demigod), or Rakshasas (a type of demon). There are no Putanas (a type of hungry ghost), Pisachas (a flesh-eating demon), etc. There are no evil beasts, evil dragons, poisonous insects, or poisonous plants. Good man, one should write out this mantra ninety-nine times according to the Dharma and place them around the perimeter of the Xiang Lun Tang (a structure of a Buddhist pagoda). Also, write out this mantra and its functional methods, and secretly cover and place them in the center of the Tang. Having done this, it is equivalent to having established ninety-nine thousand Xiang Lun Tangs, and also equivalent to having enshrined ninety-nine thousand Buddha's relics (fo sheli) (the relics of the Buddha), and also equivalent to having built ninety-nine thousand Buddha's relic pagodas, and also equivalent to having built ninety-nine thousand Eight Great Treasure Pagodas, and also equivalent to having built ninety-nine thousand Bodhimaṇḍa Pagodas. If one builds a small mud pagoda and places this Dharani (tuo luo ni) (mantra) within it, it is equivalent to having built ninety-nine thousand small treasure pagodas. If there are sentient beings who circumambulate this pagoda to the right, or bow once, or put their palms together once, or offer one flower, or offer one incense stick, burning incense, applying incense, with bells, banners, and canopies as offerings, it is equivalent to having made offerings to ninety-nine thousand Buddha pagodas. If there are flying birds, mosquitoes, flies, etc., that come to the shadow of the pagoda, they will receive a prediction of attaining Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (a nuo duo luo san miao san pu ti) ( unsurpassed complete and perfect enlightenment) and will not regress. If one sees this pagoda from afar, or hears the sound of the bell, or hears its name, all the five heinous offenses (wu wu jian ye) (five extremely grave offenses) and all karmic obstacles of that person will be extinguished, and they will always be protected and cherished by all Buddhas, and will attain the pure path of the Tathagata. These fragrances include Go-shirsha-chandana (a precious sandalwood), Raktha-chandana and Shveta-chandana (red and white sandalwood), Draksha (a spice), Mushk (an animal musk), Kunkuma (a spice), and other heavenly fragrances. If one applies even a tiny amount of the mantra-infused fragrant mud, as small as a mustard seed, to this stupa, that person will also obtain the great accumulation of merits as described above.

If a Bhikshu (monk), Bhikshuni (nun), Upasaka (male lay devotee), or Upasika (female lay devotee) writes the Dharani Dharma according to the Dharma, and respectfully makes offerings with a pure heart, it is no different from making offerings to the Buddha. One should also increase offerings to the person who writes the Dharani. As mentioned earlier, after writing the mantra and affixing the seal, placing it in the stupa, as well as in the constructed stupa and the spire, and performing it according to the Dharma, that person will obtain a vast accumulation of good roots and merits. When the Buddha spoke this Dharani seal method, all the Buddhas and Tathagatas in the ten directions praised in unison, saying, 'Excellent! Excellent! Shakyamuni (Shakyamuni) Tathagata, worthy of honor, perfectly enlightened, is able to skillfully speak this great Dharani seal method, so that all sentient beings will not pass by empty-handed, but will obtain great benefits, accumulate great merits, and will never regress from the path of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.'

At that time, the Deva-Naga-Asura and other supernatural beings (gods, dragons, asuras, and other eight classes of protective deities) in the assembly, as well as the Bodhisattvas, Vajrapani (Vajrapani, the Bodhisattva holding the vajra), the Four Heavenly Kings (Four Heavenly Kings), Indra (Indra, the king of gods), Brahma (Brahma, the lord of the Form Realm), Narayana (Narayana, a Hindu deity, Vishnu), Maheshvara (Maheshvara, a Hindu deity, Shiva), Manibhadra (Manibhadra, a Yaksha deity), Purnabhadra (Purnabhadra, a Yaksha deity), as well as Bala (Bala, a powerful god), Yama (Yama, the god of death), Varuna (Varuna, the god of water), Kubera (Kubera, the god of wealth), Prasava (Prasava, the god of procreation), and other celestial beings, after hearing this Dharma, developed a sense of detachment, their bodies and minds were subdued and softened, and they generated great joy. With a loud voice, they said to each other, 'Rare! Rare! The Buddhas and Tathagatas are truly rare!'


希有真正妙法。希有希有此陀羅尼印法。如來所說甚難值遇。是時劫比羅戰茶大婆羅門。聞此大功德殊勝利益大陀羅尼法印。即得明達法性遠塵離垢。斷諸煩惱滅諸罪障壽命延長。生大歡喜踴躍無量。令一切眾生亦皆當得心意清凈。

爾時除蓋障菩薩摩訶薩。持一寶臺種種眾寶間錯莊嚴。以佛莊嚴而莊嚴之。愛樂法故供養如來。右繞三匝頂禮佛足。而白佛言世尊此大陀羅尼壇場法印甚難值遇。世尊說此一切眾生妙法庫藏鎮閻浮提。令諸眾生種大善根。施其壽命消滅煩惱。我今亦當為令眾生種善根故。供養一切諸如來故。今于佛前說自心印陀羅尼法。即說咒曰。

【English Translation】 English version: Rare and truly wonderful is this excellent Dharma. Rare, exceedingly rare, is this Dhāraṇī seal method. As spoken by the Tathāgata, it is extremely difficult to encounter. At that time, the great Brahmin Kapila-caṇḍa (Kapila-caṇḍa, meaning Kapila the Fierce), upon hearing this great meritorious, supremely beneficial, great Dhāraṇī seal method, immediately understood the nature of Dharma, distanced himself from defilement, severed all afflictions, extinguished all sins and obstacles, and extended his lifespan. He generated great joy and boundless elation, vowing to enable all sentient beings to attain purity of mind as well.

At that time, Sarvanivāraṇaviṣkambhin Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (Sarvanivāraṇaviṣkambhin, meaning the Bodhisattva who eliminates all obstacles), holding a jeweled platform adorned with various precious treasures, embellished with the adornments of the Buddha, offered it to the Tathāgata out of love for the Dharma. He circumambulated the Buddha three times to the right, prostrated at the Buddha's feet, and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, this great Dhāraṇī maṇḍala seal method is extremely difficult to encounter. The World Honored One has spoken of this wonderful Dharma treasury for all sentient beings, protecting Jambudvīpa (Jambudvīpa, meaning the Southern Continent), enabling all sentient beings to plant great roots of goodness, bestowing them with longevity, and eliminating their afflictions. I, too, shall now, for the sake of enabling sentient beings to plant roots of goodness, and for the sake of making offerings to all the Tathāgatas, now proclaim the Dhāraṇī method of my own mind-seal before the Buddha.' Then he spoke the mantra:

'Namo bhagavate nava navatinam (Homage to the Blessed One, ninety-nine), samyaksambuddha-koṭi-niyuta-śata-sahasranam (perfectly enlightened Buddhas, kotis, niyutas, hundreds, thousands), Namo sarva-nivaranaviskambhin bodhisattvaya (Homage to Sarvanivāraṇaviṣkambhin Bodhisattva), Om, turu turu, sarva-avaranavisodhani (all obstacles, purify), sarva-tathagatamayopaharani (all Tathagatas, offerings), vipuré, nirmalé sarva-siddhanamaskrte (immaculate, all accomplishments, homage), bhara bhara, sarva-sattvavalokani (all beings, behold), Hum, sarva-nivaranaviskambhini (all obstacles, eliminate), sarva-papa-visodhani svaha (all sins, purify, svaha).'

World Honored One, this Dhāraṇī is spoken by ninety-nine billion Buddhas. If there is anyone who sincerely recites it even for a moment, all sins and karmas will be extinguished. If there is anyone who writes this mantra according to the Dharma, filling ninety-nine copies, and places them in a stupa or around a stupa.

【English Translation】 English version: If someone pays homage and praises, or offers incense, flowers, scented paste, lamps, and candles to this stupa (relic tower), then these good men and women, in their present life, will extinguish all sins, remove all obstacles, and fulfill all wishes. This is equivalent to making offerings to ninety-nine billion hundred thousand nayutas (a large number) of Ganges sands worth of Tathagatas (Buddhas), and also equivalent to making offerings to ninety-nine billion hundred thousand nayutas of Ganges sands worth of relic stupas. This is the accomplishment of a vast accumulation of good roots and merits. If any Bhikshu (monk) on the eighth, thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days of each month, bathes cleanly, wears clean clothes, and does not eat anything for one day and one night, or sometimes only eats three kinds of white food, circumambulates the stupa clockwise, and recites this Dharani (mantra) one hundred and eight times, then sins of hundreds of thousands of kalpas (aeons) and the five heinous offenses will be eliminated. I, Sarvanivaranaviskambhin (the Bodhisattva who removes all obstacles), will manifest my body, so that all their wishes will be fulfilled, and they will see all the Buddhas and Tathagatas. If someone recites it two hundred and eight times, they will obtain various Dhyanas (meditative states). If someone recites it three hundred and eight times, they will obtain the Samadhi (meditative absorption) that purifies all obstacles. If someone recites it four hundred and eight times, they will have the Four Heavenly Kings constantly come to be close, manifest their bodies to protect them, increase their body and mind, and increase their majestic virtue. If someone recites it five hundred and eight times, they will gather immeasurable Asamkhyas (countless) and immeasurable great good roots. If someone recites it six hundred and eight times, they will obtain the fundamental Dharma accomplishment of this mantra, and become a mantra-holding celestial being. If someone recites it seven hundred and eight times, they will obtain great majestic virtue and be full of light. If someone recites it eight hundred and eight times, they will obtain purity of mind. If someone recites it nine hundred and eight times, they will obtain purity of the five roots. If someone recites it one thousand and eight times, they will obtain the Srotapanna fruit (stream-enterer). If they recite it two thousand times, they will obtain the Sakrdagamin fruit (once-returner). If they recite it three thousand times, they will obtain the Anagamin fruit (non-returner). If they recite it four thousand times, they will obtain the Arhat fruit (worthy one). If they recite it five thousand times, they will obtain the Pratyekabuddha fruit (solitary Buddha). If they recite it six thousand times, they will obtain the Samantabhadra ground (the state of Bodhisattva). If they recite it seven thousand times, they will obtain the first Bhumi (the first stage of Bodhisattva). If they recite it eight thousand times, they will obtain the fifth Bhumi (the fifth stage of Bodhisattva). If they recite it nine thousand times, they will obtain the Universal Gate Dharani (mantra that holds all Dharma doors). If they recite it ten thousand times, they will obtain the Immovable Ground (the eighth stage of Bodhisattva). If they recite it eleven thousand times, they will obtain the Tathagata Ground (the state of Buddha), and achieve.


大人相大師子吼。

若復有人慾于現生。成就功德大利益者。應修故塔誦咒右繞滿百八遍。心中所愿無不成滿。時釋迦牟尼佛贊除蓋障言。善哉善哉善男子。汝能如是隨順如來所演咒法而助宣說。時執金剛大夜叉主。白佛言世尊。此大咒王陀羅尼法。同如來藏亦如佛塔。世尊以此勝法鎮閻浮提。令一切眾生皆得解脫。能於後時作大佛事。佛言執金剛主。此大咒法若在世時同如來在。以其能作佛所作事。少有所作成大福聚。況多功用所獲善根。假使百千億那由他恒河沙諸佛說不能盡。佛眼所見不可為喻。不可量不可說。執金剛主言。以何因緣少用功力成大福聚。佛言諦聽當爲汝說。若比丘比丘尼優婆塞優婆夷。欲得滿足大功德聚。當依前法書寫此四大陀羅尼咒法之王各九十九本。然後于佛塔前。造一方壇牛糞塗地。于壇四角置香水滿瓶。香爐佈列以供養。缽(盛香花水粳米)置於壇上。及三味食(烏麻菉豆粳米和煮)並三白食。各置瓶中佈於壇上。種種果子數滿九十九。並四種食一切所須。及諸香花皆置其上。以陀羅尼咒置相輪橖中及塔四周。以咒王法置於塔內。想十方佛至心誦唸此陀羅尼。即說咒曰。

【English Translation】 English version: The Great Being (one with great marks and characteristics) roars the lion's roar (an analogy for the Buddha's teachings being as powerful as a lion's roar). If someone wishes to achieve great merit and benefit in this present life, they should repair old stupas, recite mantras, and circumambulate the stupa one hundred and eight times, and all their heart's desires will be fulfilled. At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha praised the Remover of Obstacles Bodhisattva, saying: 'Excellent, excellent! Good man, you are able to follow the Dharma of mantras expounded by the Tathagata and help to propagate it.' At that time, the Vajra-holding Great Yaksha Lord (a great Yaksha deity holding a vajra) said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, this Great Mantra King Dharani Dharma is like the Tathagata-garbha (the storehouse of Buddha-nature), and also like a stupa. World Honored One, use this supreme Dharma to protect Jambudvipa (the world we live in), so that all sentient beings can attain liberation and be able to do great Buddha-works in the future.' The Buddha told the Vajra-holding Lord: 'This Great Mantra Dharma, if it is in the world, is like the Tathagata being in the world, because it can do what the Buddha does. Even if one does a little, one can accumulate great merit, let alone the good roots obtained by much effort? Even if hundreds of thousands of billions of nayutas of Ganges sand-like Buddhas were to speak, they could not exhaust its merits. What the Buddha's eye sees cannot be described by analogy, it is immeasurable, and unspeakable.' The Vajra-holding Lord said: 'For what reason can one achieve great merit with little effort?' The Buddha said: 'Listen carefully, and I will explain it to you. If a Bhikshu (monk), Bhikshuni (nun), Upasaka (male lay devotee), or Upasika (female lay devotee) (the fourfold assembly of Buddhism) wants to obtain a great accumulation of merit, they should follow the previous method and write out this King of the Four Great Dharani Mantra Dharmas, ninety-nine copies each. Then, in front of the stupa, build a square altar, smear the ground with cow dung. Place bottles filled with fragrant water at the four corners of the altar, and arrange incense burners for offerings. Place bowls (containing fragrant flowers, water, and polished rice) on the altar, as well as three flavors of food (sesame, mung beans, and polished rice cooked together) and three white foods, each placed in bottles and arranged on the altar. The number of various fruits should be ninety-nine, as well as four kinds of food and all necessities, and various fragrant flowers should be placed on top. Place the Dharani mantra in the spire (the wheel-like structure at the top of the stupa) and around the stupa. Place the King of Mantras Dharma inside the stupa. Visualize the Buddhas of the ten directions, and recite this Dharani with utmost sincerity.' 應燒香相續誦此陀羅尼咒二十八遍。即時八大菩薩八大夜叉王。執金剛夜叉主。四王帝釋梵天王。那羅延摩醯首羅。各以自手共持彼塔及相輪橖。亦有九十九億百千那由他恒河沙諸佛。皆至此處加持彼塔。安佛舍利由加持故。令塔猶如大摩尼寶。是人由此則為已造九十九億百千那由他諸大寶塔。由此當得廣大善根。壽命延長身凈無垢。眾病悉除災障殄滅。若見此塔者滅五逆罪。聞塔鈴聲消諸一切惡業。捨身當生極樂世界。若有傳聞此塔名者當得阿鞞跋致。下至鳥獸得聞其聲。離畜生趣永不復受。當得廣大福德之聚。

若復有人慾得滿足六波羅蜜者。當作方壇先以牛糞涂。后以凈土而覆其上。灑以香湯滑凈涂拭。五供養缽置於壇上。寫前四種陀羅尼咒各九十九本。手作小塔滿九十九。於此塔中各置一本。其相輪咒還置小塔相輪橖中。行列壇上以諸香花供養旋繞七遍。誦此陀羅尼曰。

By this, one will obtain vast good roots, prolonged life, a pure and immaculate body, all diseases will be eliminated, and disasters will be extinguished. If one sees this stupa, one will eradicate the five heinous crimes. Hearing the stupa's **, one will eliminate all evil karma. Abandoning this body, one will be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. If one hears the name of this stupa, one will attain Avaivartika (Ā-pí-bá-zhì, non-retrogression). Even birds and beasts, hearing its sound, will be liberated from the animal realm and never again be subjected to it. One will obtain a vast accumulation of merit and virtue. If someone wishes to fulfill the Six Paramitas (liù-bō-luō-mì, generosity, morality, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom), they should make a square altar, first smearing it with cow dung, then covering it with clean soil, sprinkling it with fragrant water to make it smooth and clean. Place five offering bowls on the altar. Copy ninety-nine copies each of the first four Dharani mantras. Make ninety-nine small stupas by hand, and place one copy in each stupa. The spire mantra should also be placed in the spire of the small stupa. Arrange them on the altar, make offerings with various incense and flowers, and circumambulate seven times. If one upholds and maintains this Dharma, the six Paramitas (the six perfections: generosity, morality, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom) will all be fulfilled. It is equivalent to building ninety-nine billion hundred thousand nayutas (a very large number) of stupas made of the seven treasures as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. It is equivalent to making offerings to ninety-nine billion hundred thousand nayutas of Tathagatas, Arhats, Samyak-sambuddhas (title of a Buddha), with great offerings clouds of devas, various adorned deva palaces, and deva offerings. Those Tathagatas will all remember these good men and women, enabling them to obtain a vast accumulation of roots of goodness and merit. If anyone writes, upholds, recites, offers, reveres, and wears this Mantra King on their body, the power of the mantra will protect this person, causing all enemies and their associates, all Yakshas (guardian deities), Rakshasas (demons), Putanas (a type of ghost), etc., to be unable to harm this person, each harboring fear and fleeing in all directions. If anyone can speak with that person, they will also be able to eradicate the five heinous offenses (the five unpardonable sins). If anyone hears this person's voice, or is in their shadow, or touches their body, all their past obstacles and heavy sins will be eliminated. All poisons will be unable to harm them, fire will not be able to burn them, water will not be able to drown them, curses and evil spirits will not be able to take advantage of them, thunder and lightning will not be able to startle them. They will always be blessed by all Buddhas, comforted and protected by all Tathagatas, and the good devas and spirits will increase their power. No other mantras or spells will be able to control them. Therefore, one should seek this mantra Dharma everywhere, write it down and place it in a stupa on the road, so that all sentient beings who pass by, down to birds, beasts, moths, flies, and ants, may be forever freed from all hells and evil realms, be born in the deva palaces, and always remember their past lives until they reach non-retrogression.

At that time, the Buddha told Sarvanivarana-Vishkambhin Bodhisattva Mahasattva (name of a Bodhisattva), Vajrapani (Vajra-bearing warrior), the Four Heavenly Kings, Shakra (Lord Indra), Brahma (Lord Brahma), and their retinues, Narayana (Hindu deity), Maheshvara (Shiva), and others, 'Good men, I entrust this King of Mantra Dharma to you. You should protect and uphold it.'


擁護。以肩荷擔寶篋盛之。於後時中莫令斷絕。應善執持應善覆護。授與後世一切眾生。令得見聞離五無間。

You should hold it well, you should protect it well, and pass it on to all sentient beings in later generations, so that they may see and hear it, and be far away from the five Avīci hells (wǔ wú jiàn, the five uninterrupted hells).
