The Sutra of the Buddha on the Merit of Building Stupas for Prolonging Life

Translated by the Tripiṭaka(collection of Buddhist scriptures) Master Prajna from the Kingdom of Kashmir(historical region in South Asia) under Imperial Edict

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove(site of one of the most famous monasteries or viharas in India) of Anathapindika(a wealthy merchant and a principal patron of the Buddha) in Shravasti(ancient city in India). He was with a great assembly of Bhikshus(ordained Buddhist monks) and Bodhisattva Mahasattvas(great bodhisattvas). At that time, King Prasenajit(king of Kosala in ancient India) was in the assembly. He rose from his seat, arranged his robes, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and, with palms joined in reverence, said to the Buddha, 'Rare is the World-Honored One. A fortune-teller has predicted that I will reach the end of my life in seven days. I am afflicted and distressed by the impermanence of suffering, and having no one to rely on, I come to seek refuge in the World-Honored One. I beseech the World-Honored One to save and protect me. How can I be freed from sorrow and suffering?' The Buddha said, 'Great King, comfort yourself and do not be afraid. The Buddhas and Tathagatas('the one who has thus gone', an epithet of the Buddha) have skillful means to enable the Great King to obtain extraordinary victories and prolong his life, and to attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi(' unsurpassed perfect enlightenment'). Listen attentively and contemplate it well. I will explain it to you in detail. Great King, you should know that if you wish to escape the suffering of impermanence and enter the lifespan of the Tathagata's Dharma body, you should first generate the mind of upholding the Buddha's pure precepts and cultivate the supreme merit. Generating this mind can prolong the king's life.' The King said to the Buddha, 'I beseech the World-Honored One to save and protect me. I will follow and cause the people of the kingdom to follow the practice of generating the mind, upholding the Buddha's pure precepts, and cultivating the supreme merit. I do not know what kind of mind to generate, what kind of precepts to uphold, and what merit is supreme. I beseech the Tathagata to explain it to me.' The Buddha said to the Great King, 'To generate the mind is to generate the four immeasurable minds. To uphold the precepts is to uphold the precept of not killing. To cultivate the supreme merit is to build stupas(a mound-like or hemispherical structure containing relics) above all else. Have compassion and protect all sentient beings. The gods and virtuous spirits will always come to protect you, never leaving you like a shadow following a form, and generating boundless blessings for the Great King. The merit of the Great King establishing a Buddha stupa is inconceivable. It is praised by the Tathagatas of the three worlds. I will briefly explain the causes and conditions to the Great King. The King should listen attentively. In the ancient past, there was a young boy herding cattle in this land.'


。有諸相師來共佔相謂言。此牧牛兒卻後七日必當壽盡。是牧牛兒又于異時。與諸小兒聚沙為戲。中有小兒摧沙為堆。言作佛塔高一磔手。或二或三至四磔手。時此小兒戲聚沙塔高一磔手。卻後更延七年壽命。于聚沙時。有辟支佛持缽而行。時諸小兒以嬉戲心。將沙奉施言我施麨。時辟支佛引缽受之。以神通力沙變成麨。時諸小兒見此因緣。皆悉獲得清凈信心。時辟支佛與諸小兒悉授記莂作如是言。汝諸童子所造之塔高一磔手者。于未來世作鐵輪王。王一天下。二磔手者作銅輪王。王二天下。三磔手者作銀輪王。王三天下。四磔手者作金輪王。王四天下。時諸小兒以嬉戲心造如是塔感如是果。何況大王發至誠心。若有善男子善女人。以決定心如法造塔。乃至一肘量一磔手一指節一穬麥。所得功德無有限量。常有諸天雨花供養。是故大王。若善男子善女人慾造塔時。先於一切眾生起大悲心而為先導。以菩提心而為根本。然後凈地作壇供養。以瞿摩夷涂之燒香散花。面正東坐作是思惟。佛薄伽梵自利利他功德圓滿。復能滿足眾生之愿。我今成就第一法身發菩提心。于薄伽梵所有造塔軌儀法則。一一次第如法奉行。

第一採集妙華。以陀羅尼加持七遍。散佈壇上供養如來。陀羅尼曰。

【English Translation】 English version: Some fortune-tellers came to examine him and said, 'This cowherd will surely die in seven days.' This cowherd, at another time, gathered with some children to play in the sand. Among them, some children piled up sand, saying they would make a Buddha-塔 (Buddha-塔, pagoda), one span (unit of measurement, the distance between the thumb and middle or index finger when stretched) high. Or two spans, three spans, even four spans. At that time, the sand-塔 (pagoda) that this child playfully built was one span high, and he was granted an extension of seven years to his life. While they were building the sand-塔 (pagoda), a Pratyekabuddha (Pratyekabuddha, one who attains enlightenment on their own without a teacher) was walking by with a bowl. The children, with playful hearts, offered sand to the Pratyekabuddha, saying, 'I offer fried flour.' The Pratyekabuddha accepted it with his bowl, and through his supernatural power, the sand turned into fried flour. At that time, the children, seeing this cause and condition, all gained pure faith. Then, the Pratyekabuddha gave predictions to all the children, saying, 'You children who have built 塔 (pagodas) one span high will become Iron Wheel Kings (type of ruler) in the future, ruling one continent. Those who built them two spans high will become Copper Wheel Kings, ruling two continents. Those who built them three spans high will become Silver Wheel Kings, ruling three continents. Those who built them four spans high will become Gold Wheel Kings, ruling four continents.' These children, with playful hearts, built such 塔 (pagodas) and received such rewards. How much more so, Your Majesty, who has generated a sincere heart? If there are good men and good women who, with a determined heart, build 塔 (pagodas) according to the Dharma, even if it is only one cubit (unit of length), one span, one finger joint, or one barleycorn (unit of length), the merits they obtain are immeasurable. Devas (deities) will constantly shower flowers as offerings. Therefore, Your Majesty, if good men and good women wish to build 塔 (pagodas), they should first generate great compassion for all sentient beings as a guide, and take Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment) as the foundation. Then, purify the ground and set up an altar for offerings, smear it with cow dung, burn incense, scatter flowers, and sit facing east, contemplating thus: The Buddha Bhagavan (Bhagavan, the Blessed One), benefits himself and others, his merits are complete, and he can fulfill the wishes of sentient beings. I now wish to attain the first Dharmakaya (Dharmakaya, the body of wisdom of the Buddha), generate Bodhicitta, and follow the rules and procedures for building 塔 (pagodas) of the Bhagavan, one by one, according to the Dharma. The first step is to gather wonderful flowers, bless them seven times with a Dharani (Dharani, mantra), and scatter them on the altar as offerings to the Tathagata (Tathagata, Thus Come One). The second time when making a mud ball, contemplate the syllable 'a' (婀). This is the Dharmakaya (法界身) of the Tathagata (如來). First, take refuge and say these words:

The third time, visualize the syllable 'spha' 娑頗(two combined) on the clay lump. One should visualize this clay lump as if it were crystal, or like Sphatika (Sphatika, a type of gem), clear and bright inside and out. Recite the dharani once to bless it. The dharani is:

om va jra u ta bha bha ya svā hā

The fourth time, when applying red earth, visualize the color of fire. Then one knows that all mundane and supramundane dharmas are achieved from minute particles. After doing this visualization, take dry red earth and apply it all over the clay lump. Visualize that all dharmas are originally unborn and ultimately empty and still. Visualize the syllable 'haṃ' 含. Imagine this clay lump as molten gold. Then build the stupa. Recite the dharani once to bless it. The dharani is:

om a ra ca vi ra ca svā hā

The fifth time, when putting the clay lump into the mold, use the dharani to bless it once. Then put it into the mold. The dharani is:

第六次入法身真言時。用此陀羅尼加持一遍。然後入印子中。陀羅尼曰。

The dharani says: oṃ paṃ la ma ta nāṃ ye svā hā The twelfth time, when placing the umbrella cover on the stupa, bless it once with a dharani. The dharani says: oṃ paṃ la ma a yo ye svā hā The Buddha (佛) told the Great King (大王): If a good man or good woman, with a pure mind, makes a Buddha-tā (佛塔) according to this ritual, whether they do it themselves, teach others to do it, or praise and believe in it, the merit gained is no different from building a Buddha-tā. 【English Translation】 English version: Those who observe the precepts and fast will be reborn after observing the precepts. If they have committed the four grave offenses (killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, and false speech) and the five heinous offenses (killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, causing disunity in the Sangha, and shedding the blood of a Buddha), all of these will be eradicated. All accumulated obstacles from beginningless kalpas will be completely eliminated. If a woman desires to have a son, she will give birth to a brave and virtuous son. The Four Heavenly Kings (Caturlokapala) will constantly protect him. The merit of building a stupa is like this. If a stupa is destroyed and turns into fine dust, and a single particle of dust is blown by the wind to another place, the mountains, forests, rivers, and seas that the dust passes through, all sentient beings who come into contact with this dust will never again be reborn in impure realms (such as the animal realm). After abandoning this body and being reborn, they will always be able to see the Buddha. Great King, if good men and good women can clearly visualize and single-mindedly remember the building of stupas and the Dharani (Dharani, meaning 'total retention' or 'mantra'), they will be forever free from the calamities of water, fire, the king, thieves, and weapons. No one will be able to harm them. If, in the wilderness, in secluded places, or in villages and large gatherings, they can proclaim this sutra to the masses, they will be saving the lives of sentient beings, and the merit they obtain will be as vast as the sky. If in future generations they write and circulate this sutra, even if the stupa has not been built, the merit of building a stupa will be the same without any difference. For the sake of the Great King and all sentient beings in future generations, I widely reveal the merit of building stupas and prolonging life. The King should remember this.

At that time, King Prasenajit (Prasenajit) and all the assembly, hearing what the Buddha said, were all greatly delighted, believed, accepted, and practiced it accordingly.
