如是我聞。一時薄伽梵住王舍城靈鷲山。與大苾芻眾及大菩薩摩訶薩九十九俱胝眾俱。

爾時聖觀自在菩薩摩訶薩。在彼眾會從座而起。白佛言世尊我欲顯說普賢陀羅尼。世尊此陀羅尼。我于月上光如來所受得。若菩薩乘者。才聞此陀羅尼。即得不退轉。速疾承事一切如來應供正遍知者。能銷滅一切業障獲得安樂富饒。身得清凈語業清凈意得清凈。通達一切大秘密海。能滿一切大愿海。即見一切如來。我由聞此陀羅尼。便證無生法忍。獲得首楞嚴三摩地。證得寶印三摩地焰炬三摩地海印三摩地普遍虛空三摩地。證得如是等恒河沙數三摩地門。復證得開無盡篋等八萬四千陀羅尼門。由此證得具慧具行。得如是智慧。成就所聞之法。于諸佛所聞法無間承事供養。唯愿世尊許我為四部眾說。佛言聽汝宣說。

爾時觀自在菩薩摩訶薩。入金剛曼荼羅三摩地。即說陀羅尼曰。

當時,聖觀自在菩薩摩訶薩,在那大眾集會中從座位上站起來,對佛說:『世尊,我想要宣說普賢陀羅尼。世尊,這個陀羅尼,是我從月上光如來那裡得到的。如果修菩薩乘的人,只要聽到這個陀羅尼,就能得到不退轉的境界,迅速地承事一切如來應供正遍知,能夠消除一切業障,獲得安樂富饒,身得清凈,語業清凈,意得清凈,通達一切大秘密海,能夠滿足一切大愿海,立即見到一切如來。我因為聽聞這個陀羅尼,便證得了無生法忍,獲得了首楞嚴三摩地,證得了寶印三摩地、焰炬三摩地、海印三摩地、普遍虛空三摩地,證得像這樣恒河沙數般的三摩地門。又證得了開啟無盡篋等八萬四千陀羅尼門。由此證得具足智慧和修行,得到這樣的智慧,成就所聽聞的佛法,在諸佛處所聽聞佛法,沒有間斷地承事供養。唯愿世尊允許我為四部大眾宣說。』佛說:『聽你宣說。』

【English Translation】 English version 《Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Speaks the Samantabhadra Dhāraṇī Sūtra》

Translated by the Tripiṭaka Śramaṇa Amoghavajra of the Da Guang Zhi Da Xing Shan Temple, who was appointed as the Minister of Ceremonies with the title of Duke of Su of the State, granted a fief of three thousand households, bestowed with purple robes, posthumously awarded the title of Grand Preceptor, and given the posthumous name Dajian.

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World-Honored One) dwelt on Vulture Peak in Rājagṛha, together with a great assembly of bhikṣus and ninety-nine koṭis (koti, ten million) of great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas.

At that time, the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, in that great assembly, arose from his seat and said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, I wish to reveal the Samantabhadra Dhāraṇī. World-Honored One, I received this dhāraṇī from the Tathāgata Moonlight Radiance. If those who are on the bodhisattva path, upon hearing this dhāraṇī, will attain non-retrogression, quickly serve all the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Samyaksaṃbuddhas, be able to eliminate all karmic obstacles, obtain peace, happiness, and abundance, purify their body, purify their speech karma, purify their mind, penetrate all the great secret oceans, be able to fulfill all the great ocean of vows, and immediately see all the Tathāgatas. Because I heard this dhāraṇī, I attained the forbearance of non-origination of dharmas, obtained the Śūraṅgama Samādhi, attained the Jewel Seal Samādhi, the Flame Torch Samādhi, the Ocean Seal Samādhi, the Universal Void Samādhi, and attained such samādhi doors as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. Furthermore, I attained eighty-four thousand dhāraṇī doors such as opening the inexhaustible coffer. By this, I attained wisdom and practice, obtained such wisdom, accomplished the dharma that was heard, and continuously served and made offerings to the Buddhas where the dharma was heard. I only wish that the World-Honored One would allow me to speak it for the fourfold assembly.' The Buddha said: 'Listen to your declaration.'

At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, entered the Vajra Mandala Samādhi, and then spoke the dhāraṇī, which is:

【English Translation】 English version: Nā-la-tuó-luó-ní suō-pó-hē (Nā-la-tuó-luó-ní svāhā): This is a mantra without specific meaning.

At that time, when Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (the Bodhisattva Who Observes the Sounds of the World) was speaking this dhāraṇī (a sacred utterance or spell), ninety-two kotis (a unit of measurement in India, one koti equals ten million) of Bodhisattvas attained the Śūraṅgama-samādhi (a profound state of meditative absorption), and Bodhisattvas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River attained the subtle dhāraṇī-samādhi. Now I will speak of the merits of this dhāraṇī. Every morning, reciting this dhāraṇī one hundred and eight times for twenty-one days, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva will manifest his form, and all wishes will be fulfilled.

If someone is imprisoned in shackles, reciting it for seven days will bring liberation. If someone suffers from malaria, reciting it near the patient's left ear will cure them. If someone suffers from wind-evil-demon disease, mixing ghee and oil and consecrating it twenty-one times, then having the patient ingest it will cure them. If suffering from toothache, consecrating a tooth-stick (a wooden stick used for oral hygiene) twenty-one times and having the patient chew it will cure them. If suffering from earache, taking oil from crushed flower seeds, placing it in a cooked copper vessel, consecrating it seven times, and dripping it into the ear will cure them. If suffering from headache or stomachache, consecrating the hand and massaging the afflicted area will cure them. If haunted by demons, tying a mantra-cord and consecrating it one hundred and eight times, then having the patient wear it will cure them. If possessed by a Ḍākinī (a female spirit or demon), consecrating oil seven times and applying it to the joints will cure them. If suffering from any illness, consecrating either the hand or a willow branch and using it to rub and brush the afflicted area will cure them. The above methods are effective even without prior preparation; simply reciting them will work. If one wishes to see the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, attain the dhāraṇī-gate samādhi, obtain supernatural powers, invisibility, anjana (eye ointment), or achieve success with orpiment medicine, the practitioner should, in front of a stupa or Buddha image, paint and wipe clean a maṇḍala (a symbolic diagram), hang banners and canopies, scatter various flowers, burn sandalwood, agarwood, and frankincense, and light one hundred lamps for extensive offerings. The reciter should purify themselves with a bath, wear clean clothes, maintain brahmacarya (celibacy or pure conduct), and then recite this dhāraṇī, establishing the boundaries of the directions. The dhāraṇī is as follows:

Namo ratna-trayāya namo ārya-valokiteśvarāya bodhisattvāya mahā-sattvāya (Homage to the Triple Gem, homage to the noble Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being)

此陀羅尼是我心真言。誦真言即成請召。行者從白月八日起首。乃至十五日。日三時時別誦一百八遍。三時澡浴三時換衣。其十五日作廣大供養無限唸誦。其日中夜觀自在菩薩。來至道場現金色身。相好端嚴放百千光明。持誦者不應恐怖生勇健心。才見觀自在菩薩。即得地位證得陀羅尼三摩地。即見東方阿閦如來南方寶幢如來西方無量壽如來北方天鼓音王如來。見四如來十方無量如來身廣大威德。承于諸佛大

【English Translation】 English version Om Maha Karunika (Great Compassionate One) Ya Tat Yaniyata Zhili Mandha Ming Mili Mandha Mi Zhili Mili Mandha Mi Xima Mandha Mi Xima Ming Jieshi Zhi Nadi Gilama Du Suoha.

By using this Dharani to bless water twenty-one times, and sprinkling it in the ten directions within the Mandala, a boundary is established.

I will now speak of the Inviting Dharani. The one who practices mantra should first recite this Dharani to invite, and then recite the mantra. The Dharani says:

Namo Ratna Trayaya Namo Arya Avalokiteshvaraya Bodhisattvaya Mahasattvaya Maha Karunikaya Tadyatha Zhili Zhili Mili Mili Zhili Lei Ehi Bhagavan Arya Avalokiteshvara Svaha.

This Dharani is my heart mantra. Reciting the mantra accomplishes the summoning. The practitioner should begin from the eighth day of the white moon (lunar calendar), up to the fifteenth day, reciting one hundred and eight times each of the three times of the day. Bathe three times and change clothes three times. On the fifteenth day, make extensive offerings and recite limitlessly. On that day, in the middle of the night, Avalokiteśvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) will come to the Mandala, manifesting a golden body, with dignified features, emitting hundreds of thousands of lights. The one who upholds and recites should not be afraid, but should generate a courageous heart. Upon seeing Avalokiteśvara, one immediately attains a position and realizes the Dharani Samadhi. One will then see Akshobhya Buddha (the Buddha of the East), Ratnaketu Buddha (the Buddha of the South), Amitabha Buddha (the Buddha of the West), and Amoghasiddhi Buddha (the Buddha of the North).
