我蒙毗盧遮那聖旨。而說觀自在摩訶(大)枳娘曩(智)母怛羅(印)法。若有修瑜伽人。欲生西方極樂世界利益眾生者。即從阿阇梨耶有智熟者。而受蓮華金剛法儀。廣陳供養作唸誦法。于其壇中安置香爐。其香爐含攝觀自在周遍法界之相。以何為相。即其香印應作紇哩(二合)文。智業不可得理。攝四種義ha ra ī aḥ 合成一字。其梵文hrīḥ 是也。賀字諸法因不可得。羅字清凈無垢染。伊字自在不可得。惡字本不生不滅。是為順義。本不生不滅。自在不可得。清凈無垢染。諸法因不可得。是為逆義。逆順相應顯香印文。我作其圖。

Translated by the Great Tang Special Advancement, Acting Minister of the Court of State Ceremonial, Concurrently Holding the Title of Grand Master of the Palace, Bearing the Title of Duke of Su State, Posthumously Granted the Title of Minister of Works, Posthumously Honored with the Title of Great Discriminator, Greatly Wise, and Unempty Tripiṭaka Master
I have received the sacred decree of Vairocana (毗盧遮那). Therefore, I speak of the Dharma of Avalokiteśvara (觀自在), the Great (摩訶) Wisdom (枳娘曩) Mother Mudra (母怛羅). If there are those who cultivate Yoga and desire to be born in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss to benefit sentient beings, they should receive the Lotus Vajra Dharma ritual from an Acharya (阿阇梨耶, teacher) who is wise and mature. Extensively arrange offerings and perform recitations in the mandala, placing a censer within it. This censer contains the aspect of Avalokiteśvara pervading the Dharma Realm. What is this aspect? The incense seal should be made with the Hrih (紇哩) syllable. The principle of karmic wisdom is unattainable. The four meanings of ha ra ī aḥ are combined into one syllable. This is the Sanskrit hrīḥ. The syllable 'ha' means the cause of all dharmas is unattainable. The syllable 'ra' means pure and without defilement. The syllable 'ī' means freedom is unattainable. The syllable 'aḥ' means originally unborn and unceasing. This is the direct meaning. Originally unborn and unceasing, freedom is unattainable, pure and without defilement, the cause of all dharmas is unattainable. This is the reverse meaning. The direct and reverse meanings correspond, revealing the incense seal. I have made its diagram.

This wonderful incense seal is named 'Great Compassion Extricating Suffering.' Why is this so? According to the order of burning, the true principle is revealed. When it is completely burned, it signifies that whether direct or reverse, it ultimately returns to the Dharma of Emptiness. One should carefully observe that from the single syllable Hrih (紇哩), the five syllables such as Om Vajra (嚩日羅) Dharma (達磨) are born. From each syllable, countless syllable-doors are born. Each syllable-door transforms into all Buddhas.
菩薩身。一一化身周遍法界利益眾生。是故行者得無量福。悉地圓滿蒙諸佛加被。是故行者獲現世安穩無諸障礙。如妙蓮華。見者愛惜。轉已得生極樂上品蓮中。其有利根智慧方便。現身見佛。得陀羅尼名。不染世也。所生之處身出妙香。遍十方國。眾生得薰。皆證不退。如是功德不可具說。其香爐蓋上。可雕嚩日羅(二合)達磨字。首加唵字以為五字(可旋順)其蓋中央應立三昧耶形。一鈷杵上安開八葉蓮華是也。如上五字圍繞此三昧耶。三昧耶者是本誓之形也。若見此形作禮專念。即證蓮華性。所以生極樂者更不染世。設交世間。度眾生如蓮華不為諸垢所染也。皆由過去本誓願力故。證此果界也。是故行者立此三昧耶形。應專念之而作是想。是hrīḥ 文之香菸成此三昧耶形。此形更為本尊形體。表因時本誓。遂為果時形色。是三昧耶義也。燒香之時結本尊契。誦是本真言印之。即得成就。其蓋圖如斯。

【English Translation】 English version: The body of a Bodhisattva, each emanation pervading the Dharma realm, benefiting all sentient beings. Therefore, practitioners can obtain immeasurable blessings, achieve perfect accomplishment, and receive the blessings of all Buddhas. Therefore, practitioners can obtain peace and stability in this life, free from all obstacles, like a beautiful lotus flower, cherished by all who see it. After rebirth, they can be reborn in the highest grade lotus in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss (Sukhavati). Those with sharp roots, wisdom, and skillful means can see the Buddha in their present body, obtain the name of Dharani (dharani), and not be defiled by the world. In the place where they are born, their bodies emit a wonderful fragrance, pervading the ten directions. When sentient beings smell this fragrance, they can all attain non-retrogression. Such merits cannot be fully described. On the lid of the incense burner, the characters Vajra (vajra) Dharma (dharma) can be carved, with the syllable Om (om) added at the beginning, forming five syllables (which can be rotated). In the center of the lid, a Samaya (samaya) form should be established, which is a vajra (vajra) with an open eight-petaled lotus flower on top. The above five syllables surround this Samaya form. Samaya is the shape of the original vow. If you see this shape, respectfully prostrate and recite with focused mind, you can realize the lotus nature. Therefore, those who are reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss are no longer defiled by the world. Even if they enter the world to liberate sentient beings, they are like a lotus flower, not defiled by any impurities. This is all due to the power of past original vows, which enables them to realize this fruit realm. Therefore, practitioners should establish this Samaya form, and should recite with focused mind, and visualize that the incense smoke of the syllable hrīḥ (seed syllable) forms this Samaya form. This form further becomes the form of the principal deity, representing the original vow in the causal stage, which eventually becomes the form and color in the resultant stage. This is the meaning of Samaya. When burning incense, form the mudra (hand gesture) of the principal deity, and empower it by reciting the mantra (mantra) of the principal deity, and you will attain accomplishment. The diagram of the incense burner lid is as follows. (The above is a brief explanation of the incense mudra). One can enter this wheel until unsurpassed Bodhi. If you want to constantly recite the mantra without interruption, but have not yet detached from clinging and want to be lazy, just rely on this wonderful mudra, and should burn sandalwood, lotus, and other incense. 剛法明。何以故。如上真言字義。皆於此印香能顯示故。
根本印。二手金剛縛。二頭指頭合如蓮華葉。二大指並立即成。真言曰。
oṃ va jra dha rmma hrīḥ
若人持此一字真言。能除一切災禍疾病。命終之後當得極樂上品之生。余諸所求世間出世大愿隨持得成。何況依此教法而修行者。一切悉地不久圓滿也。

享保龍集乙卯仲夏之谷。以凈嚴和尚之點本。將仇校之壽梓。而以香菸輝真如hrīḥ 云覆剎塵。

【English Translation】 English version: Vajradharma. Why is that? Because the meaning of the above mantra syllables can all be revealed through this incense mudra.
The fundamental mudra: Form the Vajrabandha mudra with both hands. Join the tips of the two index fingers together like lotus petals. Bring the two thumbs together and raise them upright. The mantra is:
oṃ vajra dharma hrīḥ
If someone recites this one-syllable mantra, they can eliminate all disasters and illnesses. After death, they will be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, attaining the highest grade of lotus birth. All other desires, whether worldly or transcendental, can be fulfilled through recitation. How much more so for those who practice according to this teaching, all siddhis (achievements) will soon be perfected.
