The Sutra of the Great Bright King Dharani of the Holy Six Syllables Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by the Tripitaka Master Shi Hu, Minister of the Honglu Temple and Great Master of Spreading the Dharma, under Imperial Order from the Western Heaven Translation Bureau
Thus have I heard. At one time, the World-Honored One was in the Jetavana Anathapindika-arama in the country of Shravasti. At that time, the World-Honored One said to the Venerable Ananda: 'Ananda, you should listen carefully. I have the Great Bright King Dharani of the Six Syllables, which was proclaimed by countless Buddhas of the past for the sake of the great Bodhisattvas. Ananda, now I will again proclaim this dharani for you and sentient beings of the future age. It should enable sentient beings who obtain this dharani in the future to gain great benefits.'
At that time, Ananda and the lord of the Saha world, Mahabrahma, Indra, the Four Heavenly Kings, and others, said to the World-Honored One: 'World-Honored One, with great compassion, please proclaim it for us. It should enable us and sentient beings of the future age to obtain benefit and happiness in the long night.'
At that time, the World-Honored One then spoke the Great Bright King Dharani of the Six Syllables, saying:
'Tad-ya-tha (引一) Nandi-le (引二) Madhu-mati (三) Mandala-ke (引 四) Puri (引) Nandike (引) Svaha (二合引) (五)'
At that time, the Buddha said to Ananda: 'If there are sentient beings who hear the name of this Great Bright King Dharani, and with faith receive, uphold, remember, recite, and offer various kinds of offerings with incense and flowers, then all fears of this person, such as fear from the king, fear from water and fire, and even fear from thieves and enemies, all such fears will be liberated. Moreover, poison and even swords and weapons will not be able to harm them. Furthermore, devas, non-devas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, Kumbhandas, and even Kataka-putanas, etc., who possess or bewitch them, will not be able to harm them. Also, malarial fever, one day, two days, three days, four days

【English Translation】 English version: Days, or many days, or a short while. Moreover, headaches, earaches, backaches, abdominal pains, and even dropsy and all kinds of evil diseases and sufferings, will not be able to harm them. Day and night, they will always obtain peace and security. All their wishes will be fulfilled. At that time, the World Honored One spoke the Dharani (mantra) thus: 『Tadyatha Anari Panari Nami Namani Vakasi Kousuke Kukachechi Bhuta Gara Cheti Teji Vavati Yasha Vavati Svaha』 The Buddha told Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha): 'If there are sentient beings who hear this Dharani, I do not see any Devas (gods), Nagas (serpent deities), Yakshas (a type of spirit), Rakshasas (demons), Pretas (hungry ghosts), Pisacas (flesh-eating demons), Bhutas (ghosts), Kumbhandas (a type of demon), Putanas (a type of demon), Katakapatanas (a type of demon), or even human or non-human beings, or any who act without benefiting others, who would dare to defy it. Ananda, if those who act without benefiting others dare to defy this Dharani of mine, their heads will be shattered into seven pieces, like branches of the Arli tree.' At that time, the World Honored One again told Ananda: 'The merit and power of this Dharani are immeasurable and boundless, benefiting sentient beings without end. You should receive and uphold it, and widely propagate it, so that it will not be cut off in future generations.' After the Buddha spoke this Sutra, Ananda, Mahabrahma (the lord of the Form Realm), Sakra (the lord of the Trayastrimsa Heaven), the Four Heavenly Kings (the Four Great Kings, guardians of Buddhism), and others, hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced, believed, accepted, and, paying homage to the Buddha, withdrew.
