如是我聞。一時佛在補怛落迦山聖觀自在菩薩宮。其山峰峙眾寶所成。無垢清凈閻浮檀金。摩尼寶王種種珍寶。妙色光明常普照曜復有如意天劫波樹。恒時流出阿僧祇數。蘇羅鼻香栴檀沉水。俱蘇摩華柔軟適意。妙色芬芳處處嚴飾。復有無量百千萬億那由他數。天龍夜叉乾闥婆阿修羅迦樓羅緊那羅摩睺羅迦人非人等往詣佛所頭面作禮。供養恭敬尊重讚歎。一心合掌寂然聽法。爾時世尊告梵王言。如來說法初中后善。其義深遠其語巧妙。純一無雜圓滿清凈梵行之相。隨宜說法利益眾生。是聖觀自在菩薩一百八名。若有聞者百千萬億無數劫中不墮惡趣。彼人若有五無間業盡得消除。世世生生得宿命智。聖觀自在菩薩一百八名秘密明曰。

【English Translation】 English version 《The Sutra of the One Hundred and Eight Names of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva》

Translated by Tripitaka Master Tian Xizai of Mingjiao Monastery from Jalandhara, Central India, during the Song Dynasty, under imperial decree.

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the palace of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva on Mount Potalaka (Avalokiteśvara's abode). That mountain peak was towering, made of various jewels, flawless, pure, and bright, of Jambudvipa gold (a type of gold), Mani-raja jewels (wish-fulfilling jewels), and various treasures. Wonderful colors and light constantly and universally illuminated it. There were also wish-fulfilling Kalpa trees (wish-fulfilling trees) that constantly flowed out countless Surabhi fragrances (a type of fragrance), sandalwood (a type of fragrant wood), aloeswood, and kusuma flowers (a type of flower), soft and comfortable, with wonderful colors and fragrances adorning every place. There were also immeasurable hundreds of thousands of millions of nayutas (a unit of measurement) of nagas (dragons), yakshas (a type of spirit), gandharvas (a type of celestial being, who feeds on music), asuras (a type of demon), garudas (a type of large bird), kinnaras (a type of celestial being, skilled in music), mahoragas (a type of great serpent spirit), humans, and non-humans, who went to the Buddha's place, bowed their heads to his feet, made offerings, respectfully honored, revered, and praised him, and with one mind, joined their palms together and quietly listened to the Dharma.

At this time, the World-Honored One told Brahma: 'The Dharma spoken by the Tathagata is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end. Its meaning is profound, its words are skillful, pure and unmixed, and it is the aspect of perfect and pure brahmacarya (pure conduct). He teaches according to the capacity of beings, benefiting all. These are the one hundred and eight names of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. If anyone hears them, they will not fall into the evil realms for hundreds of thousands of millions of countless kalpas. If this person has committed the five heinous offenses (pañcānantarya, five extremely grave offenses), they will all be completely eliminated, and in every life, they will attain the wisdom of remembering past lives (jātismaraṇa, the ability to recall past lives).' The secret vidyā (mantra) of the one hundred and eight names of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva is:

At that time, the Buddha told Brahmā (King of the Form Realm heavens) and Indra (Lord of the Trayastrimsa Heaven): 'If there is anyone who receives, upholds, reads, and recites this secret mantra of the 'One Hundred and Eight Names of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva', know that this person, in lifetime after lifetime, will always be able to see the Holy Avalokiteśvara (Ārya Avalokiteśvara). If one constantly upholds it, one will obtain great wealth and honor, acquire intelligence and wisdom, gain courage and vigor, attain uprightness and beauty, acquire wonderful sounds, obtain eloquence, and constantly know the meaning of all Dharmas, and enter the maṇḍala (sacred enclosure). Whatever is prayed for, all mantras (mantra) will be accomplished. Morning recitation will ensure the absence of illness, scabies, and respiratory ailments. At the time of death, one will be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.'

At that time, the World Honored One told Brahmā (Brahmā): 'If a person upholds the names of sixty-two billion Ganges river sands worth of Buddhas, and also makes offerings of the four requisites throughout their life, is the merit obtained by this person great?' Brahmā (Brahmā) replied: 'Very great, World Honored One! Very great, Sugata (Sugata, Thus Come One)!' The Buddha said: 'If a person upholds the one hundred and eight names of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, even for a short time making prostrations and offerings, the merit obtained by these two people is equal and without difference. Brahmā (Brahmā), you should know that upholding, reading, and reciting the one hundred and eight names of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva can obtain such immeasurable and boundless benefits of merit, how much more so if one upholds it throughout their life?'
