爾時觀世音菩薩摩訶薩。合掌恭敬白言世尊應正遍知。是我前身不可思議福德因緣。今蒙世尊與我受記。欲令我身起以大慈悲拔導心。當爲利益一切眾生。斷諸結縛滅八怖畏。今我欲說姥陀羅尼。末世眾生蒙是姥陀羅尼威神力故。皆離苦因獲安樂果。世尊后五百歲中。隨在國土城邑聚落山林樹下。有諸苾芻苾芻尼諸善男子善女人等。常能日夜六時依法。讀誦受持姥陀羅尼最勝法門者。我以念報如來恩德。恒皆隨逐擁護是人而不放舍。不使一切妒憋鬼神競侵嬈害。復令一切宿重業障一時消滅。隨得一切陀羅尼神咒壇印種種法門速皆成就。復白佛言世尊。后五百歲眾生垢重薄福者。多不能專念。設有持者或被鬼神之所侵害。今我持以佛威神力自在通力。廣為饒益一切眾生。安樂諸天阿修羅等。謂當說是姥陀羅尼三昧耶門。我於過去無量劫中。已曾親自供養受持如是陀羅尼法。復見過去未來現在諸佛世尊。亦等皆因此姥陀羅尼三昧耶門。得成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。有善男子善女人等。能常專念讀誦受持此姥陀羅

這時,觀世音菩薩摩訶薩(Mahāsattva, महानसत्त्व,偉大的菩薩)合掌恭敬地對世尊應正遍知(Samyak-saṃbuddha,सम्यक्सम्बुद्ध,如來十號之一,正等覺者)說:『世尊,這是我前身不可思議的福德因緣,今日蒙世尊為我授記,欲令我身發起大慈悲心,拔濟引導眾生,為利益一切眾生,斷除各種煩惱束縛,滅除八種怖畏。現在我想要宣說姥陀羅尼(Mudra-dhāraṇī,मुद्रा-धारणी,手印陀羅尼)。末法時代的眾生,蒙受此姥陀羅尼的威神力,都能脫離痛苦之因,獲得安樂之果。世尊,在後五百歲中,無論在哪個國土、城邑、聚落、山林樹下,如果有比丘(bhikṣu,भिक्षु,出家男眾)、比丘尼(bhikṣuṇī,भिक्षुणी,出家女眾)、善男子、善女人等,能夠經常在日夜六時依法讀誦受持姥陀羅尼這個最殊勝的法門,我爲了報答如來的恩德,會恒常隨侍擁護這些人而不捨棄,不讓一切嫉妒、暴戾的鬼神侵擾傷害他們,並且讓他們一切宿世的深重業障一時消滅,隨之得到一切陀羅尼、神咒、壇印等種種法門,迅速成就。』

又對佛說:『世尊,后五百歲的眾生,業障深重,福報淺薄,大多不能專心憶念。即使有能受持的人,也可能被鬼神所侵害。現在我憑藉佛的威神力和自在神通力,廣泛地饒益一切眾生,安樂諸天、阿修羅(Asura,असुर,一種神道)等,將要宣說這個姥陀羅尼三昧耶(Samaya,समय,誓約)門。我在過去無量劫中,已經親自供養受持這樣的陀羅尼法,並且見到過去、未來、現在諸佛世尊,也都因此姥陀羅尼三昧耶門,得成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提(anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi,अनुत्तरा-सम्यक्-संबोधि,無上正等正覺)。如果有善男子、善女人等,能夠經常專心憶念讀誦受持此姥陀羅

【English Translation】 English version 《The Sutra of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's Mudra-dhāraṇī》

Translated by Bodhiruci, a Tripitaka Master from India during the Tang Dynasty

At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (Mahāsattva, महानसत्त्व, Great Being) with palms joined together respectfully said to the World Honored One, the Samyak-saṃbuddha (Samyak-saṃbuddha, सम्यक्सम्बुद्ध, Perfectly Enlightened One): 'World Honored One, this is due to the inconceivable merits and conditions of my past lives. Today, I am honored to receive the prediction from the World Honored One, wishing to arouse great compassion in my being to deliver and guide sentient beings, to benefit all sentient beings, to cut off all bonds of afflictions, and to extinguish the eight fears. Now I wish to speak the Mudra-dhāraṇī (Mudra-dhāraṇī, मुद्रा-धारणी, Hand-seal Dharani). Sentient beings in the Dharma-Ending Age, by the power of this Mudra-dhāraṇī, can all be liberated from the causes of suffering and obtain the fruits of happiness. World Honored One, in the latter five hundred years, wherever in countries, cities, villages, forests, or under trees, if there are bhikṣus (bhikṣu, भिक्षु, Monks), bhikṣuṇīs (bhikṣuṇī, भिक्षुणी, Nuns), good men, or good women, who can constantly, at the six times of day and night, according to the Dharma, recite and uphold this supreme Dharma-door of the Mudra-dhāraṇī, I, in order to repay the kindness of the Tathagata, will always follow and protect these people without abandoning them, preventing all jealous and violent ghosts and spirits from invading and harming them. Furthermore, I will cause all their heavy karmic obstacles from past lives to be extinguished at once, and they will quickly achieve all kinds of Dharma-doors such as dhāraṇīs, mantras, mandalas, and seals.'

He further said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, sentient beings in the latter five hundred years, with heavy defilements and shallow merits, mostly cannot concentrate their minds. Even if there are those who uphold it, they may be harmed by ghosts and spirits. Now, I, relying on the Buddha's majestic power and the power of自在神通(self-mastery and supernormal power), will extensively benefit all sentient beings, bringing peace and happiness to devas, asuras (Asura, असुर, a type of deity), and others. I will speak this Samaya (Samaya, समय, Vow) door of the Mudra-dhāraṇī. In the past countless kalpas, I have personally made offerings to and upheld such a dhāraṇī Dharma. Furthermore, I have seen the Buddhas, World Honored Ones, of the past, future, and present, who have all attained Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, अनुत्तरा-सम्यक्-संबोधि, unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment) through this Samaya door of the Mudra-dhāraṇī. If there are good men or good women who can constantly concentrate their minds to recite and uphold this Mudra-dhāraṇī.'


尼最勝法門者。此人現世口說流利。無所質礙慧辯通達。於一切天人大眾之。中最為第一。聞者歡喜悉皆稽首。在所生處常得恭侍瞻佛法僧。有所言說人皆信受。當知即是諸佛威神自在之力非我自力。爾時世尊贊觀世音菩薩摩訶薩言。善哉善哉汝能如是。利益安樂一切天人阿修羅等及凈業道。我今以智印印之。令汝永不退轉種種大慈大悲方便等心。是時觀世音菩薩摩訶薩重白佛言。世尊我念過去無量劫中。初持此姥陀羅尼法門在補陀落山中。乃逢魔王領諸魔眾惱亂我法。令使咒句不得成就。時我即以此姥陀羅尼。降伏眾魔悉皆退散。當知此陀羅尼力不可思議。是時觀世音菩薩摩訶薩。以大慈悲為當利益安樂。諸天時世人故。即于佛前變說千手千眼姥陀羅尼大身咒曰(用后總攝身印)。

【English Translation】 English version: If someone can uphold this most supreme Dharma gate, this person will be eloquent in this life, without any obstacles, and their wisdom and eloquence will be unobstructed and thorough. They will be the foremost among all gods and humans. Those who hear it will rejoice and bow their heads in reverence. Wherever they are born, they will always have the opportunity to respectfully serve the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. People will believe and accept what they say. It should be known that this is all due to the majestic and unhindered power of all Buddhas, and not my own power.' At that time, the World Honored One praised the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokiteshvara (Guanshiyin Pusa) saying, 'Excellent! Excellent! You are able to benefit and bring peace and happiness to all gods, humans, asuras, and the path of pure karma. I now seal you with the seal of wisdom, so that you will never regress from your various great compassion and expedient minds.' At this time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokiteshvara said to the Buddha again, 'World Honored One, I recall that in countless past kalpas, when I first held this Mudra Dharani Dharma gate in Mount Potalaka (Avalokiteshvara's abode), I encountered the Demon King leading many demons to disturb my Dharma, preventing my mantra from being accomplished. At that time, I used this Mudra Dharani to subdue all the demons, causing them all to retreat. It should be known that the power of this Dharani is inconceivable.' You ghosts and spirits should know that the power of this mantra can destroy all mountains, dry up the great sea, and also destroy the armies of the Asuras (Asura, a warlike deity), protect all countries and cities, destroy all ghost sicknesses, spirit sicknesses, drug poisons, insect poisons, and evil people, and also subdue the Trayastrimsa Heaven (Trayastrimsa Heaven, a realm in Buddhist cosmology), causing them all to obey.' If one gazes upon the face of the Bodhisattva three times daily and recites this Dharani one thousand and eight times, one will quickly receive the smiling countenance of Avalokiteshvara (觀世音菩薩, the Bodhisattva of Compassion). Upon seeing this, one will immediately realize the first Bhumi (離垢初地, the first stage of a Bodhisattva's path), the 'Stage of Joy,' and the Samadhi (唸佛三昧, a state of meditative absorption) of Buddha-recitation, illuminating the world with light. If, at the time of death, one enters a state like meditative absorption, one will attain knowledge of past lives (宿命智, knowledge of previous existences) in the place of rebirth. All karmic obstacles will be completely eliminated. If one wishes to uphold this Dharani, one should do so from the first to the fifteenth day of January, May, and September. Observe a vegetarian diet, wear clean white clothes, and consume three white foods. In front of a Sharira Stupa (舍利塔, a stupa containing relics) or a Sharira image, smear a four-cubit square altar with white sandalwood paste. If one blesses one's hand seven times with this Dharani and strokes the body of any sick person, they will be cured immediately. If one gazes upon the face and body of a person who has lost their memory and recites this Dharani one hundred and eight times, they will regain their right mindfulness. If one gazes upon the face of a hungry or thirsty person and recites this Dharani one hundred and eight times, all signs of hunger and thirst will be completely eliminated. If one wishes to establish a boundary and enter the water of a pond, write this Dharani according to the Dharma and attach it to the top of a banner, so that within a hundred Yojana (由旬, an ancient Indian unit of distance), there will be no calamities or misfortunes, and a boundary will be established to protect it. After completing one hundred and eight times, the demonic grievances will be eliminated. If one wishes that all people do not ridicule or despise oneself, one should enchant willow branches twenty-one times each day and chew them in the mouth, and one will be respected. If one wishes to obtain great eloquence and wisdom, use twelve taels of Acorus tatarinowii, grind it into a fine powder, and mix it with ghee and honey. Enchant it with the Mulatantra Dharani Mantra, causing it to manifest three auspicious signs, such as warmth, smoke, and light. After obtaining these signs, take seven pills each day, the pills being the size of tung seeds, and apply them to the heart. After taking them for one hundred days, one will obtain wisdom and eloquence without hindrance. 【English Translation】 English version Each thumb is raised and pressed against the first segment of the index finger. Let the palms be slightly open. If good men and good women make this mudra, they will immediately eliminate the immeasurable evil karma and karmic obstacles accumulated from countless cycles of birth and death, and they will be reborn in the pure lands of the ten directions in the future. Now, when Śākyamuni Buddha first sat under the Bodhi tree, he was disturbed by all the demon kings, and he also made this mudra to obtain peace and happiness.

The Third Mudra of Samadhi of Liberation of Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

First, expose the right shoulder and kneel on the right knee, placing the palms together above the head. Bend the two index fingers so that their tips touch each other, and press the two thumbs on the second segment of the index fingers. All Buddhas of the past have also cultivated this Dharma method in the same way, and have all attained samadhi and liberation. If one constantly forms this samadhi mudra and makes offerings, one will quickly see the samadhi of all Buddhas in the ten directions. The mantra says:

Tadyatha sarva dharani (1) Mandalaya (2) Ehi ehi (3) Pra (2 combined) ma shuddha (4) Sattva paya (5) Svaha (6)

The Fourth Thousand-Eyed Mudra and Mantra of Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Stand up with feet together. First, place the backs of the nails of the two middle fingers, ring fingers, and little fingers against each other. Raise the two index fingers so that their tips touch each other. Press the sides of the two thumbs against the sides of the second segments of the index fingers. Open the wrists about five inches and place them between the eyebrows. If one constantly practices this mudra and mantra, one will gradually be able to see the pure and wonderful lands of Buddhas in hundreds of thousands of millions of worlds, and in each Buddha land, one will obtain one million four thousand Bodhisattvas as companions for the practitioner. If one has not passed through the Mandala Dharma method, one must not see this mudra Dharma method. The mantra says:

In this lifetime, one should recite ten thousand verses daily. This mudra Dharma was transmitted by the Tathagata (如來,rúlai, Thus Come One) Nichizo (日藏, rìzàng, Sun Treasury) to Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva (觀世音菩薩摩訶薩,guānshìyīnpúsàmóhēsà, Great Bodhisattva). 【English Translation】 English version: Ninth Mudra

Arise, bring your palms together at your heart. Bend both thumbs into the palms, keep the other four fingers straight and together, palms at the heart, and recite the Great Body Mantra three or seven times. This will ensure that you go to the palaces of the heavens, travel to the Buddha lands of the ten directions, and obtain hundreds of thousands of treasures as you wish, to offer to all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Vajras, and all holy beings. If anyone wishes to practice this Dharma method, they should purify themselves by bathing every morning and perform this mudra, then they will be able to see the Buddhas of the ten directions in lands as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and also eliminate the heavy sins of countless kalpas (aeons) of birth and death. Therefore, praise the merits of this mudra.

Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's Wish-Fulfilling Mudra, Tenth

According to the previous mudra, bend the two index fingers and press them onto the fingernails of the two thumbs, with the backs of the index fingernails touching each other. Use the previous Great Body Mantra. If anyone seeks various wishes, they will all be fulfilled, and they will definitely not regress from the path of Bodhi (enlightenment).

Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's Samadhi (state of meditative absorption) of Cessation Mudra, Eleventh

According to the previous mudra, straighten and spread the index fingers and thumbs, and open the palms. This mudra, when I was on the causal ground (referring to the state before attaining Buddhahood), countless Buddhas and Tathagatas (thus-gone-ones) of the Ganges River sands taught me this mudra, enabling me to attain the path of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment). Use the Great Body Mantra.

Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's Buddha-Inviting Samadhi Mudra, Twelfth

According to the previous mudra, bring the palms together at the heart, and move the index fingers back and forth. The mantra is:

Om (一) Sarva-buddha-samaya (二) Ahi ehi (三) Prama-suddha-sattva (四) Svaha (五)

Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's Mandala (sacred diagram) Drawing Method

Again, it is reported to the World Honored One, this vast and miraculous transformation Mandala (sacred diagram) mantra mudra Dharma method, can, in the later degenerate age, enable those who uphold the mantra to quickly and clearly see the equality and unequalled Samaya (vow) of all Tathagata (thus-gone-one) lineages' mantra mandalas (sacred diagrams). The mantra holder should always keep their mouth secret, and warn against frivolous discussions, and never rashly proclaim the warnings of the various supernatural powers and samadhis (states of meditative absorption) in this dharani (incantation).


相。凈心進止念無暫亂。眩惑於他貪利求說外示異相。滅斯惡作則得成就。若不以此真凈法心。而修習者唐捐其功。虛受眾苦永無成辦。世尊當知是人應常精進。守持凈戒齋法清凈。不食五辛酒肉殘食。亦不作離間語諂誑語嫉妒語。及盜諸部壇印咒法句故。若犯斯過即為一切諸佛菩薩之所棄捨。我亦棄捨不樂觀攝。世尊當知是人。則已破於一切諸佛凈戒。毀滅一切三寶正法諸支善相。如此之人常與一切天魔鬼神。及諸外道毗那夜迦。同一界攝同一業住。永無依護聖不救脫。恒為一切諸佛菩薩賢聖天仙共所毀訾。如斯污道匱法之人。雖于晝夜常念此之陀羅尼者。世尊我見是人永無成就。如是不成非我所咎。自是他過。以斯義故不應以此陀羅尼法及諸陀羅尼法。當使是人見聞經卷讀誦受持。應與持凈梵行心具慈悲憐愍眾生。行儀無諂求菩提人。書寫讀誦如法受持。則得成就姥陀羅尼曼拏攞故。此法乃是觀世音菩薩摩訶薩。最尊最上秘密心王。是故咒者應以真實大精進心。盡捨身分支節骨肉。筋髓頭目悉施於他。求覓此法常勤修行。何況種種珍寶谷帛。衣服臥具湯藥外財。為此解脫姥陀羅尼曼拏攞。印像等法而不捨乎。至常依師求修學耶。何以故此解脫法。能與末世四生有情作大佛事。成於正行正業正精進正見趣分解脫道處

【English Translation】 English version: Form. With a pure mind, in all actions, thoughts should be constantly focused and undisturbed. Do not be deluded by external things, greedily seeking profit through false teachings, or displaying strange appearances to deceive others. Eradicate these evil deeds, and you will attain accomplishment. If you do not cultivate with this truly pure mind, your efforts will be in vain, enduring suffering without end, and never achieving success. World Honored One, know that such a person should always be diligent, upholding pure precepts, maintaining purity through fasting, abstaining from the five pungent roots (garlic, onions, leeks, chives, asafoetida), alcohol, meat, and leftover food. Also, do not engage in divisive speech, flattering or deceitful words, or jealous speech, and do not steal the mandalas, mudras, mantras, or phrases of other schools. If one commits these transgressions, they will be abandoned by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. I (Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva) will also abandon them, not observing or protecting them. World Honored One, know that such a person has already broken the pure precepts of all Buddhas, destroyed the true Dharma of the Three Jewels, and ruined all aspects of goodness. Such a person dwells in the same realm and shares the same karma with all demons, ghosts, and various heretics and Vinayakas (obstructing deities), having no refuge or protection, and cannot be saved by the sages. They are constantly criticized by all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, sages, and celestial beings. Such a defiled and Dharma-deficient person, even if they constantly recite this Dharani day and night, World Honored One, I believe they will never achieve success. This failure is not my fault, but their own. Therefore, this Dharani Dharma and other Dharani Dharmas should not be shown to such people for them to see, hear, read, recite, or uphold. This Dharma should be given to those who uphold pure conduct, possess compassion in their hearts, have pity for all beings, act with integrity and without flattery, and seek Bodhi. Let them write, read, and uphold it according to the Dharma, and they will attain accomplishment of the Usnisa Dharani Mandala. This Dharma is the most venerable and supreme secret heart-essence of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva. Therefore, those who practice this mantra should, with a true and great diligent mind, completely relinquish their own limbs, joints, bones, flesh, tendons, marrow, head, and eyes, giving them all to others, seeking this Dharma, and constantly cultivating diligently. How much more so should they relinquish various treasures, grains, silks, clothing, bedding, medicine, and external wealth for the sake of this liberating Usnisa Dharani Mandala, images, and other related practices? Always rely on a teacher to seek learning and cultivation. Why? Because this liberating Dharma can perform great Buddha-works for sentient beings in the degenerate age of the four types of birth (oviparous, viviparous, moisture-born, and metamorphic), accomplishing right conduct, right action, right diligence, and right view, guiding them towards the path of liberation.

畫焰摩王。次當西門隔中畫水天神。次當北門隔中畫俱廢羅天神。次當東門隔中畫俱摩羅天神。次於四角各依本位畫四天王神。皆令面目大瞋怒相。並畫神僕從。次分第五院亦闊一肘。于其四面。共畫一百八個種種果樹花樹寶樹。又於四角各畫一寶須彌山。於四門中亦各畫四大海水。其壇內外院地皆作青色。壇內外界等闊三寸。遍於界上皆豎頭畫金剛杵印。頭刃相次。復于西門南。皆側擘開一門咒者出入。復以千手千眼觀世音像。當壇中心面東懸置。復以千手千眼經。置於三十二葉蓮花上白檀像前。以檀香水一十六碗。種種三白飲食果子共二十五盤。一㪷香水甕二十五個。並於口插諸彩花樹。及種種花鬘共二十個。蘇燈油燈共二十八盞。涂香末香及諸香等共布十疊。菩薩神幡五色繒幡都共二十五道。如是供養疊器甕等。皆用金器銀器銅器。故如無真者假者亦充。如是等物。都內外院四面如法羅列。懸諸幡花。復以稻穀花白芥子並諸雜花散於壇上。是諸飲食每日清潔。造新好者持列供養。其咒法師每日出入澡浴清凈。以香涂身著新衣服食三白食。燒栴檀香沉水香蘇合香龍腦等香。日日三時供養千手千眼觀世音菩薩像。又于內第三院像前。一時自誓受菩薩三律儀戒。于其晝時夜時。皆于外院西門結加趺坐。共誦姥陀羅尼一

千八遍。日常不闕於三七日盡意供養。復於六時從壇西側門入于壇內。第三院西門住立。結前第一第二第三乃至十二請佛三昧耶印。作前印遍各誦咒七遍。乃至十二印畢。當唯自誓發趣。不退堅固大菩提愿。但常至誠作法呼召一切皆來。應正端坐以決定心。想一切咒神如在眼前。一無隔障不得異境。誦前大身咒滿三七日夜。于其像上放大光明。又得觀世音菩薩必定現身。若見身來當爲化現阿難身相面貌熙怡。來問行者所須何愿。咒者詳候乃仰白言聖者。為求無上正等菩提姥陀羅尼三摩地法。復愿一切壇印咒法皆悉成就。一切鬼神悉盡順伏。得如願已但自知之。勿泄向人輒妄傳說。得是證已。斯人乃可起以大悲治救世間。此一罈法于白㲲上。或細布上畫之亦得。若欲求一切愿者。當作四肘水曼拏攞。心畫蓮花燒沉水香。誦前身咒一千八遍。作前第十乞愿印。即得一切愿滿稱心。

This will surely protect her life and ensure a safe and joyful delivery. The sons and daughters born will possess beautiful features and be adorned with numerous virtuous qualities. Because of the deep roots of virtue planted in past lives, they will be loved and respected by all, and will often enjoy supreme happiness among people. If there are sentient beings suffering from eye diseases, the Dharma master who practices this mantra can form the Bodhisattva's Thousand-Eyed Mudra, chant the mantra twenty-one times, and press the mudra on the eyes, and the eye disease will be cured. Because of this cause, that person will obtain boundless heavenly eyes, able to see through the joys of the heavens. If one wishes to paint an image of the Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Mahāsattva, one should use white cotton cloth, ten or twenty cubits in length and width. The Bodhisattva's body should be painted the color of Jambudvipa gold. The face should have three eyes, and there should be a thousand arms. In each palm of the thousand hands, there should be an eye. The head should be adorned with a jeweled crown, and in the crown, there should be a manifested Buddha. Among the main large hands, there should be eighteen arms. First, two hands should be joined in prayer at the chest. 結界隨所遊方。持以凈水或以凈灰各咒七遍。所在住處以水以灰先自灑身。然後向於四方四角。如法散灑即成結界。若有善男子善女人。被諸惡鬼眾邪魍魎所惑亂者。取石榴枝柳枝等。陰誦此咒輕打病人。無病不差。咒曰。

【English Translation】 English version The method of establishing a boundary can be performed wherever you go. Take clean water or clean ashes, and chant the mantra seven times over each. At the place where you will reside, first sprinkle the water or ashes on yourself, and then scatter them in the four directions and four corners according to the proper method, and the boundary will be established. If there are good men or good women who are confused and disturbed by various evil ghosts, demons, or goblins, take pomegranate branches, willow branches, etc., and secretly recite this mantra while gently striking the sick person. There is no illness that cannot be cured. The mantra is as follows: Namo Sarva Buddhadharma Sanghabhyah (Homage to all Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha), Namo Arya Avalokitesvaraya (Homage to the Noble Avalokitesvara), Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva), Namo Vajrapanaye (Homage to Vajrapani), Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva), Tadyatha (Thus it is): Tubhi Sthibhi Kayatubhi, Sara Jabharani, Svaha (May it be accomplished). The power of this mantra and mudra can subdue all heretical views and non-Buddhist paths. If there are good men or good women who can recite it twenty-one times each at sunrise, noon, and sunset every day, it is equivalent to offering various treasures, flowers, incense, and food to ten billion Buddhas without any difference. If, after the end of their life, they are forever freed from the three evil paths (hell, hungry ghosts, and animals), and are not reborn in a female body, they will be reborn in the land of Amitabha Buddha (Amitabha Buddha) according to their wishes. The Tathagata (Tathagata) will extend his hand to pat their head and tell them: 'Do not be afraid, come and be born in my country.' In this life, they will not suffer accidental death and will not be taken advantage of by ghosts and spirits. The Fourteenth Mudra of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Sahasrabhuja-sahasranetra Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva) for Crushing the Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds and Eradicating Sins Stand up, bend your left elbow, and extend it slightly forward. Furthermore, by generating compassion towards all beings, they can burn away all roots of sin. After the end of this life, they will meet the Buddha again and become a Chakravartin King in that Buddha-land. They will also attain a Dharani called the Samadhi Wisdom of the Inexhaustible Treasury. They will also be endowed with the twenty-eight marks.

千手千眼觀世音菩薩降伏三千大千魔怨印第十五

以五指相叉右押左急把拳。當置頂上誦大身咒。即得一切怨人而自降伏。若作此法二十九日夜。于舍利塔前持以白檀香泥。摩涂其地作二肘壇。于中散雜色花。澡浴清凈。著新凈衣。手把香爐燒沉水香。面東趺坐。想千手千眼觀世音菩薩如在頂上。誦大身咒滿一千八遍。此是最上趣證悉地初之功能。又取芥子烏麻。一處和搗為末。以三指撮取少許。一咒一擲火中至滿七日日別一千八遍。然後所作皆悉成就。

千手千眼觀世音菩薩廣大無畏印第十六

起立並足。先以右手仰垂左肘頭。左手亦然。若常于舍利像前。誦大身咒一千八遍者。速得無畏施利眾生三昧耶門。又取茴香白芥子菖蒲舍多婆利(外國藥名)以此等物應于佛前或在壇處。以大身咒一咒一燒滿一千八遍。復以香花供養咒經。所為之愿皆悉克果。若諸餘咒而無驗者。以此咒咒之亦皆成就。若欲乞夢。則誦此咒並結印印眼。令所念事隨夢見之。若人無福所向不諧者。日誦一百

If there is a drought, take black sesame seeds (Wu Ma Zi) and barnyard millet seed oil, make them into balls, chant the mantra one hundred and eight times, and throw them into a deep pool of water, and heavy rain will fall. If there is too much rain, take rice grains, fry them into flowers, mix them with turnip oil, make them into balls, chant the mantra one hundred and eight times, and throw them into the deep pool of water, and the rain will stop. The Fifteenth Mudra for Subduing the Three Thousand Great Thousand Demonic Enemies by Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Interlock the five fingers, with the right hand pressing down on the left, quickly make a fist. Place it on top of the head and recite the Great Body Mantra. This will cause all enemies to subdue themselves. If you perform this practice for twenty-nine nights, in front of a stupa, use white sandalwood paste to smear the ground and create an altar two cubits in length. Visualize the Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva as if above your head. Recite the Great Body Mantra one thousand and eight times. This is the supreme initial function for quickly attaining siddhi (accomplishment). Also, take mustard seeds (Jie Zi) and black sesame seeds (Wu Ma), mix them together and grind them into powder. Take a small amount with three fingers, chant the mantra once and throw it into the fire, until you have completed seven days, with one thousand and eight repetitions each day. Then, whatever you do will be completely accomplished. The Sixteenth Great Fearless Mudra of the Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Stand up with feet together. First, let the right hand hang down with the palm facing up, resting at the left elbow. Do the same with the left hand. If you constantly recite the Great Body Mantra one thousand and eight times in front of a stupa image, you will quickly obtain the Samadhi (state of meditative absorption) of Fearless Giving, benefiting all sentient beings. Also, take fennel (Hui Xiang), white mustard seeds (Bai Jie Zi), sweet flag (Chang Pu), Shatavari (She Duo Po Li) (a foreign medicine). With these items, you should, in front of a Buddha or at an altar, recite the Great Body Mantra, chanting the mantra once and burning once, completing one thousand and eight repetitions. Then, offer incense and flowers to the sutra, and all your wishes will be fulfilled. If other mantras are ineffective, empower them with this mantra, and they will all be accomplished. If you wish to seek a dream, then recite this mantra and form the mudra, imprinting it on your eyes, so that the things you think about will appear in your dreams. If a person has no good fortune and everything they do goes wrong, recite this mantra one hundred times daily.


八遍至滿七日。諸有所求一切皆得。於時觀世音菩薩摩訶薩。復白佛言世尊。往在娑竭羅龍宮大海法會。見諸龍眾受大苦惱。念諸龍等及諸眾生欲說此法。令得離苦無諸怨害。時有龍女獻我一大如意寶珠。價直娑婆世界。為求此法。我亦為彼廣說是姥陀羅尼法離諸苦故。

爾時水精菩薩白言世尊。我亦當為利益護持此咒當說護持千眼印咒。

水精菩薩印咒第十七

毗摩隸(一)摩訶毗摩隸(二)郁呵隸(三)摩訶郁呵隸(四)休摩隸(五)摩訶休摩隸(六)薩訶隸止隸涕(七)馺婆訶(八)

世尊若有善男子善女人。在所遊方受持此千手千眼菩薩法者。我當常隨衛護是人。不令諸魔眷屬而作惱亂。若人急難他國相侵盜賊逆亂。當取五色縷以此咒。一咒一結滿二十一結繫於左臂。又以左手無名指中指頭指。把拳大母指押上。展小指指所賊坊。誦咒一百八遍者。悉皆退散不能為害。

爾時觀世音菩薩。在雪山中說法之時。乃遠觀見夜叉羅剎及國人民。唯食眾生血肉無有善心。菩薩為欲利益方便教化。以神通力尋至彼國。現千手千眼大降魔身。說成就姥陀羅尼印。是時羅剎國王。來至我所求哀頂禮。我以成就印印之。即令得成無上道法。

千手千眼觀世音菩薩成就印第十八

Thinking of these dragons and all sentient beings, I wanted to proclaim this Dharma, so that they could be free from suffering, without resentment or harm. At that time, a dragon girl offered me a great cintāmaṇi (wish-fulfilling jewel), worth as much as the Sahā-loka-dhātu (this world we live in). To seek this Dharma, I also extensively proclaimed the Mātṛ-dhāraṇī Dharma for her, so that she could be free from all suffering.' At that time, Sphaṭika-bodhisattva (crystal bodhisattva) said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, I should also, for the benefit and protection of this mantra, proclaim the protective thousand-eyed mudrā mantra.' Also, with the left hand, clench the ring finger, middle finger, and index finger into a fist, press the thumb on top, extend the little finger towards the direction of the thieves, and recite the mantra one hundred and eight times. The thieves will all retreat and be unable to cause harm. At that time, when Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva was expounding the Dharma in the snowy mountains, he saw from afar that the Yakṣas (a type of guardian spirit), Rākṣasas (a type of demon), and the people of the country only ate the blood and flesh of sentient beings, and had no good intentions. The Bodhisattva, in order to benefit them and conveniently teach them, used his supernatural powers to quickly arrive in that country, manifested the great demon-subduing body with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes, and proclaimed the accomplishment Mātṛ-dhāraṇī mudrā. At that time, the Rākṣasa king came to me, begging and prostrating. I sealed him with the accomplishment mudrā, and immediately caused him to achieve the unsurpassed Dharma. 結加趺坐。先以左手舒五指仰掌在左膝上。次以右手舒五指。覆手捺右膝上。此印與滅盡印法法同。所有過去未來現在諸佛皆同修持。宗尊此印得佛菩提。是印能除一切業障。若坐禪人修諸三昧不現前者。當七日七夜于阿練若處。誦此陀羅尼並作此印。晝夜至心唯一想佛六時懺悔。即得諸法現前及得大福聚。無量無邊不可稱計。

千手千眼觀世音菩薩呼召三十三天印第二十

千手千眼觀世音菩薩成等正覺印第十九

千手千眼觀世音菩薩呼召三十三天印第二十

【English Translation】 English version: Stand with feet together, palms joined at the heart. Interlock the little fingers, left over right. Recite the Great Body Mantra twenty-one times. Various methods of recitation will quickly lead to accomplishment. If you wish to save sentient beings suffering in the six realms (hell realm, hungry ghost realm, animal realm, asura realm, human realm, and deva realm), use the Wheel Mudra. Touch the tips of all ten fingers together, opening the wrists and palms. The space between each of the ten fingers should be about an inch. This represents my (Avalokiteśvara's) constant circulation through the six realms, delivering sentient beings from various sufferings. By forming this mudra, one circulates through all realms, and all beings encountered are freed from suffering.

The Nineteenth Mudra of Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Achieving Perfect Enlightenment

Sit in the lotus position (padmāsana). First, extend the five fingers of the left hand, palm upward, on the left knee. Then, extend the five fingers of the right hand, palm downward, and press it on the right knee. This mudra is the same in method as the Extinction Mudra. All Buddhas of the past, future, and present practice this mudra. By honoring this mudra, one attains the Bodhi wisdom of the Buddha. This mudra can eliminate all karmic obstacles. If a meditator practices various samādhis (meditative states) but cannot manifest results, they should, in a quiet place (araṇya), recite this dhāraṇī (mantra) and form this mudra for seven days and seven nights. Day and night, with utmost sincerity, single-mindedly contemplate the Buddha, and repent during the six periods (six times of day and night). Then, all dharmas (teachings) will manifest, and one will obtain great merit, immeasurable and uncountable.

The Twentieth Mudra of Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Summoning the Thirty-Three Heavens

First, make a fist with the four fingers of the left hand. Then, grasp the thumb of the left hand with the right hand, also like making a fist. Let the thumb of the left hand protrude from the tiger's mouth of the right hand. Move the index finger of the right hand back and forth. The mantra is:

If a good man or good woman, when about to sleep, forms this mudra and recites this mantra, forming the mudra with each recitation, silently reciting it one hundred and eight times in their heart, then whatever they wish for in their heart, they will know and see in their dreams. If one constantly forms this mudra and recites this mantra daily, they will quickly eliminate all karmic obstacles and not lose the mind of Bodhi. The dreams of this person in the dark night will gradually increase and will all be auspicious, even to the point of dreaming of the Tathāgata (Buddha).


菩提樹下授記成道。及得釋梵諸天常來侍衛。

千手千眼觀世音菩薩呼召天龍八部鬼神印第二十一

起立並足。先以左手大母指屈在掌中。四指握上作拳當心上著。次以右手亦如之豎。以右手在右耳邊。以頭指來去。咒曰。

南無尼乾陀(一)南無阿利阇波陀(二)馺婆訶(三)南無阿利阇羅馺婆訶(四)堙醯夷醯(五)馺婆訶(六)

此印咒若善男子善女人受持讀誦者。速知七世宿命之事。蛇毒藥毒不相災害。刀不能害王不生瞋。永劫不受地獄之苦。若每日日誦此咒時。能令二十八部鬼神。來詣誦咒人邊坐聽誦咒。若善男子善女人等為鬼魅著。當以白縷一咒一結四十九結。系其嚥下即當除差。若有國內疫癘流行國人死亡者多。當取王園池中蓮花一千八莖。復以蓮花一咒一擲。火燒令盡災疫即除。

The Twenty-first Mudra of Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva for Summoning the Eight Divisions of Gods and Dragons, Ghosts and Spirits

Stand up straight with feet together. First, bend the left thumb into the palm, grasp it with the other four fingers to form a fist, and place it against the chest. Then, do the same with the right hand, raising it to the right ear and moving the index finger back and forth. Recite the mantra:

Namo Nigantha (Nigantha, a heretic) (1) Namo Arya-kshetrapala (Arya-kshetrapala, Holy Land Protector) (2) Svaha (Svaha, accomplishment) (3) Namo Arya-kshetra Svaha (Arya-kshetra Svaha, Holy Land Accomplishment) (4) In hi i hi (In hi i hi, Come here, come here) (5) Svaha (Svaha, accomplishment) (6)

If a good man or good woman upholds, recites, and practices this mudra and mantra, they will quickly know the events of their past seven lives. They will not be harmed by snake venom or drug poisons. Swords cannot harm them, and the king will not become angry. They will never suffer the pain of hell. If one recites this mantra daily, it can cause the twenty-eight divisions of ghosts and spirits to come to the side of the mantra reciter, sitting and listening to the recitation. If good men or good women are possessed by ghosts or demons, take a white thread, tie forty-nine knots while reciting the mantra once for each knot, and tie it around their throat, and the affliction will be removed. If there is an epidemic in the country, and many people are dying, take one thousand and eight lotus stems from the king's garden pond, and throw one lotus stem into the fire while reciting the mantra once for each stem, until they are all burned, and the epidemic will be eliminated.

The Twenty-second Mudra of Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva for Liberation

Sit in the lotus position. First, touch the tips of the middle finger and thumb of the left hand together, with the palm facing upward. Extend the other three fingers naturally and place the hand on the left knee. Then, do the same with the right hand, with the palm facing downward, and place it on the right knee. Form this mudra and recite the Great Body Mantra twenty-one times, and your wishes will gradually be fulfilled. All suffering and afflictions will be liberated. If a good man or good woman has committed the ten evil deeds, the five rebellious acts, etc., as if using all the land of Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the world we live in) to grind into dust, with each particle of dust representing a great kalpa, and this person has committed sins equivalent to the number of dust particles, they should fall into hell and suffer for countless kalpas, with no hope of escape. 【English Translation】 English version: If someone, day and night, neither speaks nor eats, and forms a mudra (hand gesture) and recites a mantra (sacred utterance) one thousand and eight times before an image of a Śarīra (relics, usually of the Buddha or enlightened monks), then the suffering of past kalpas (aeons) will all be extinguished. If they are not extinguished, that is impossible. World Honored One, if someone upholds this mudra, it possesses great efficacy, inconceivable.

The Twenty-Third Mudra: The Self-Mastery Divine Foot Mudra of Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

Stand up, first grasp the big toe of the right foot with the left hand as if making a fist. Then grasp the back of the left wrist with the right hand. Recite the Great Body Mantra seven times. By the power of the mudra and mantra, one will obtain supernatural powers, abide in the ground of non-retrogression, and even attain Bodhi (enlightenment). Do not let any sound come out when reciting the mantra.

The Twenty-Fourth Mudra: The Transformation Self-Mastery Mudra of Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

First, use the thumb of the left hand to press on the fingernail of the little finger. Then do the same with the right hand. The remaining three fingers are each spread out and erect. Bring the wrists together and place them on top of the head. Recite the Great Body Mantra one hundred and eight times, and then one will be as free as an immortal who can hide and fly.
