【English Translation】 English version The Great Body Dhāraṇī Sūtra of Sahasrabhuja-sahasranetra Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (Extracted from the Middle Volume of the Great Compassion Sūtra)

Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Vajrabodhi, bearing the title 'Great Propagator of Teachings,' who was posthumously awarded the title 'Grand Commandant of the Kaifu' by the Great Tang Dynasty, under imperial decree.

Namo sarva jayā (Homage to all victories), namo ratna-trayāya (Homage to the Three Jewels), namo Amitābhāya Tathāgatāya Arhate Samyaksaṃbuddhāya (Homage to Amitābha, the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One), namo Āryāvalokiteśvarāya Bodhisattvāya Mahāsattvāya Mahākaruṇikāya (Homage to Noble Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being, the Great Compassionate One), namaḥ Mahāsthāmaprāptāya Bodhisattvāya Mahāsattvāya Mahākaruṇikāya (Homage to Mahāsthāmaprāpta, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being, the Great Compassionate One), namo Bhagavate Vipula-vimāna-supratiṣṭhita-saṁkhyāta-sūrya-śata-sahasra-adhika-prabhāva-bhāsita-mūrdhe Mahā-maṇi-makuta-kuṇḍala-dhāriṇi Bhagavate Padma-pāṇaye (Homage to the Blessed One, whose magnificent palace is well-established, renowned, with the radiance surpassing hundreds of thousands of suns illuminating the crown of the head, adorned with great jewels, a crown, and earrings, the Blessed One, holding a lotus in hand), sarva-lokāpāya-śamanāya (for the pacification of all realms of suffering), vividha-bhaya-duḥkha-samaveśa-viśiṣṭa-sarva-sattva-parimocanāya (especially for the complete liberation of all beings afflicted by various fears and sufferings), tadyathā oṃ bhūrbhuvaḥ (thus it is: oṃ bhūrbhuvaḥ), mahā-loka-karaṇa-tamas-timira-paṭala-vidhvaṃsana-karāya (to the great maker of the world, the dispeller of the darkness and veils of gloom), lagni-veṣa-moha-jāla-śamaka-śāśaka-lakṣa-ka-sa (the one who extinguishes the fire of delusion, the tamer, the marker, ka-sa).

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: (問)云何名為眼觀世音菩薩大身咒? (答)此咒名為:『唵,達列,都達列,都列,梭哈。』 (問)此咒有何功德? (答)此咒能除一切病苦,能滅一切罪障,能增長一切功德,能成就一切善根,能遠離一切怖畏,能圓滿一切希求。若有眾生,身患重病,壽命將盡,誦此咒者,即得延壽;若有眾生,為諸罪業所纏,誦此咒者,即得解脫;若有眾生,貧窮困苦,誦此咒者,即得富饒;若有眾生,為諸怖畏所逼,誦此咒者,即得安樂;若有眾生,有所希求,誦此咒者,即得圓滿。此咒有如是等無量功德,不可具說。 (問)此咒應如何修持? (答)應以清凈心,至誠心,恭敬心,于觀世音菩薩像前,或於靜室之中,一心持誦。誦持之時,應觀想觀世音菩薩慈悲之相,心中默唸觀世音菩薩之名。如是誦持,日久功深,自能感應道交,獲福無量。 (問)此咒有何禁忌? (答)此咒無有禁忌。但當以清凈心持誦,勿生邪念,勿行惡事。若能如是,則功德無量。

【English Translation】 English version: (Question) What is called the Great Body Mantra of Eye-Observing Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva (Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva: The Bodhisattva of Compassion)? (Answer) This mantra is called: 'Om, tare, tuttare, ture, svaha.' (Question) What are the merits of this mantra? (Answer) This mantra can remove all suffering from illness, eradicate all sinful obstacles, increase all merits, accomplish all good roots, keep away from all fears, and fulfill all wishes. If there are sentient beings suffering from serious illness and whose lives are about to end, those who recite this mantra will obtain extended life; if there are sentient beings entangled by various sins, those who recite this mantra will obtain liberation; if there are sentient beings who are poor and suffering, those who recite this mantra will obtain wealth; if there are sentient beings oppressed by various fears, those who recite this mantra will obtain peace and happiness; if there are sentient beings who have wishes, those who recite this mantra will obtain fulfillment. This mantra has such immeasurable merits, which cannot be fully described. (Question) How should this mantra be practiced? (Answer) One should recite it with a pure mind, a sincere mind, and a respectful mind, before the image of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, or in a quiet room, with single-mindedness. While reciting, one should visualize the compassionate appearance of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and silently recite the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva in one's heart. Reciting in this way, over time, with deep effort, one will naturally experience a response and connection, and obtain immeasurable blessings. (Question) What are the prohibitions of this mantra? (Answer) This mantra has no prohibitions. But one should recite it with a pure mind, without generating evil thoughts, and without doing evil deeds. If one can do so, then the merits will be immeasurable.
