【English Translation】 English version The Great Compassionate Heart Dhāraṇī of the Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva
Translated by Bukong of the Great Tang Dynasty
I bow my head to Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), the Lord of Great Compassion, whose vows are profound and whose form is auspicious. A thousand arms, adorned and universally protecting; a thousand eyes, radiating light and universally observing. In truthful speech, proclaim the secret words; within the unconditioned mind, arise compassionate thoughts. May (it) quickly fulfill all wishes and forever eliminate all karmic offenses. May dragons, gods, and all sages together protect with compassion, and may hundreds of thousands of samādhis be swiftly cultivated. Holding (this dhāraṇī), the body is a banner of light; holding (this dhāraṇī), the mind is a treasury of spiritual powers. Washing away the dust and toil, may (we) cross the sea (of suffering); transcending and realizing Bodhi, (this is) the expedient gate. I now recite and vow to take refuge, may all wishes be fulfilled from the heart. 觀世音菩薩(Avalokiteśvara)又對佛說:『世尊,如果有人天眾生,誦持大悲咒的章句,臨命終時,十方諸佛都會來授手接引,想要往生到任何佛土,都能隨愿往生。』又稟告佛說:『世尊,如果眾生誦持大悲神咒,卻墮入三惡道,我誓不成正覺。誦持大悲神咒的人,如果不能往生到諸佛國土,我誓不成正覺。誦持大悲神咒的人,如果心中不能獲得無量三昧(Samadhi)和辯才,我誓不成正覺。誦持大悲心神咒的人,在現在這一生中,一切所求如果不能如願成就,就不能稱之為大悲心陀羅尼。除非是不善良或不至誠。如果女子厭惡自己的女身,想要轉產生男子,誦持大悲陀羅尼章句,如果不能轉女身成男子身,我誓不成正覺。心生少許懷疑的人,必定不能得到如願的結果。如果眾生侵損常住的飲食財物,即使千佛出世也無法懺悔,縱然能夠懺悔也不能消除罪業。現在誦持大悲神咒就能立即消除。如果侵損食用常住的飲食財物,必須對著十方師懺謝,然後才能消除罪業。現在誦持大悲陀羅尼時,十方佛就會來為作證明,一切罪障全部都消滅。一切十惡、五逆、誹謗人、誹謗佛法、破戒、破壞佛塔寺廟、偷盜僧眾的財物、玷污清凈的梵行,像這樣的一切惡業重罪全部都滅盡,唯獨一種情況除外,就是對於咒語產生懷疑的人,即使是小罪輕罪也不能消除。』
【English Translation】 English version: Subduing oneself with disgust, If I turn towards the animal realm, I will naturally attain great wisdom.
Having made this vow, sincerely recite my name (Avalokiteśvara), and also single-mindedly remember my original teacher, Amitabha Tathagata (Amitabha). Then, one should recite this Dharani mantra. Reciting it five times in one night will eliminate hundreds of millions of kalpas of heavy sins of birth and death from the body.
Namo Amitabha Tathagata (Namo Amitabha), Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva).
Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (Avalokiteśvara) again said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if any humans or devas recite the verses of the Great Compassion Mantra, when they are about to die, all the Buddhas of the ten directions will come to offer their hands. Whichever Buddha land they wish to be reborn in, they will be able to be reborn there according to their wishes.' Again, he reported to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if sentient beings who recite the Great Compassion Mantra fall into the three evil paths, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. If those who recite the Great Compassion Mantra are not born in the Buddha lands, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. If those who recite the Great Compassion Mantra do not attain immeasurable Samadhi (Samadhi) and eloquence, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. If those who recite the Great Compassion Heart Mantra do not have all their wishes fulfilled in this present life, it cannot be called the Great Compassion Heart Dharani. Except for those who are not virtuous or not sincere. If women despise their female bodies and wish to become men, reciting the verses of the Great Compassion Dharani, if they do not transform from female bodies into male bodies, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. Those who have slight doubts will certainly not achieve the desired result. If sentient beings infringe upon the permanent dwelling's food and wealth, even if a thousand Buddhas appear in the world, it will not be possible to repent. Even if they can repent, the sin will not be eliminated. Now, reciting the Great Compassion Mantra will immediately eliminate it. If one infringes upon the use of the permanent dwelling's food and wealth, one must confess and apologize to the teachers of the ten directions before the sin can be eliminated. Now, when reciting the Great Compassion Dharani, the Buddhas of the ten directions will come to bear witness, and all sins and obstacles will be eliminated. All the ten evil deeds, five rebellious acts, slandering people, slandering the Dharma, breaking precepts, destroying pagodas and temples, stealing the Sangha's property, defiling pure conduct, all such evil deeds and heavy sins will be completely extinguished, except for one thing: those who have doubts about the mantra, even small and light sins cannot be eliminated.'
業亦不得滅。何況重罪。雖不即滅重罪。猶能遠作菩提之因。復白佛言。世尊若諸人天誦持大悲心咒者。得十五種善生。不受十五種惡死也。其惡死者。一者不令其人飢餓困苦死。二者不為枷禁杖楚死。三者不為怨家仇對死。四者不為軍陳相殺死。五者不為虎狼惡獸殘害死。六者不為毒蛇蚖蝎所中死。七者不為水火焚漂死。八者不為毒藥所中死。九者不為蟲毒所害死。十者不為狂亂失念死。十一者不為山樹崖岸墜落死。十二者不為惡人厭魅死。十三者不為邪神惡鬼得便死。十四者不為惡病纏身死。十五者不為非分自害死。誦持大悲神咒者。不被如是十五種惡死也。得十五種善生者。一者所生之處常逢善王。二者常生善國。三者常值好時。四者常逢善友。五者身根常得具足。六者道心純熟。七者不犯禁戒。八者所有眷屬恩義和順。九者資具財食常得豐足。十者恒得他人恭敬扶接。十一者所有財寶無他劫奪。十二者意欲所求皆悉稱遂。十三者龍天善神恒常擁衛。十四者所生之處見佛聞法。十五者所聞正法悟甚深義。若有誦持大悲心陀羅尼者。得如是等十五種善生也。一切天人應常誦持勿生懈怠。觀世音菩薩說是語已。于眾會前合掌正住。于諸眾生起大悲心。開顏含笑。即說如是廣大圓滿無礙大悲心陀羅尼神妙章句。陀羅尼

Namo Ratna Trayaya (This is Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva himself. One must recite with compassion and care. Do not be loud or impatient. 1) Namo Arya (This is Cintamanicakra Bodhisattva himself. One must be mindful here. 2) Varo Kete Svara Ya (This is Patra Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva himself. If you wish to obtain relics, recite this and visualize the Bodhisattva holding a bowl. 3) Bodhisattva Ya (This is Amoghapasa Bodhisattva. To suppress great armies. 4) Mahasattva Ya (This is the seed of the Bodhisattva. 【English Translation】 English version: (40) If it is for fruits, melons, and various grains and crops, one should form the Grape Hand Mudra. The mantra: Om Amala Kanti Ning Svaha After Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva spoke this mantra, the earth shook in six ways, and precious flowers rained down from the sky in profusion. All the Buddhas of the ten directions rejoiced, and the heavenly demons and heretics were terrified, their hair standing on end. All those present in the assembly attained fruit and realization, some attaining the Srotapanna (Stream-enterer) fruit, some attaining the Sakrdagamin (Once-returner) fruit, some attaining the Anagamin (Non-returner) fruit, and some attaining the Arhat (Worthy One) fruit. Some attained the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and even the tenth Bhumi (grounds). Countless beings aroused the Bodhi mind (mind of enlightenment). The Great Compassion Heart Dharani Sutra and Mantra (End) The Hekke Hiroku (Eight Houses Secret Records) states: 'The Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara's Great, Vast, Perfect, Unobstructed Great Compassion Heart Great Dharani Divine and Wonderful Verses,' one volume (Nin). Although the name may be abbreviated or detailed, it should be this sutra. This is because it speaks of the 'Great, Vast, Perfect, Unobstructed Great Compassion Heart Dharani Divine and Wonderful Verses.'
