如是我聞。一時佛在王舍城耆阇崛山中。與無量菩薩摩訶薩大眾俱前後圍繞。爾時觀世音菩薩摩訶薩。與無數持咒賢聖俱。前後圍繞來詣佛所。到佛所已五體投地頂禮佛足。禮佛足已繞佛三匝卻坐一面。時觀世音菩薩白佛言。世尊我有心咒名十一面此心咒十一億諸佛所說。我今說之為一切眾生故。欲令一切眾生念善法故。欲令一切眾生無憂惱故。欲除一切眾生病故。為一切障難災怪惡夢欲除滅故。欲除一切橫病死故。欲除一切諸噁心者令調柔故。欲除一切諸魔鬼神障難不起故。世尊我未曾見若天若魔若梵若帝釋若沙門若婆羅門等。有能受持如是咒者。若讀若誦書寫流佈。或以此咒防護其身。或以此咒咒水澡浴其身。或入陣鬥戰或為毒所中。誦此咒故一切諸橫無所能為。唯宿殃不除。此咒一切諸佛所念。我此咒一切諸佛所說。世尊我憶過恒河沙數劫外。有一佛名百蓮華眼頂無障礙功德光明王如來。我于爾時在彼佛所。作大持咒仙人中王。于彼佛所方得此咒。得此咒時十

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Eleven-Faced Avalokiteśvara Dhāraṇī Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Yěshé Jūduō (Jñānagupta), a Tripiṭaka Master from India, during the Yuwen Dynasty of the Zhou Dynasty

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rājagṛha (Royal City), surrounded by a great assembly of immeasurable bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (great beings). At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva (the Bodhisattva of Compassion), surrounded by countless virtuous and holy beings who uphold mantras, came to the Buddha's abode. Upon arriving, he prostrated himself with his five limbs touching the ground, paying homage to the Buddha's feet. After paying homage, he circumambulated the Buddha three times and then sat to one side. Then, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (Avalokiteśvara) said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, I have a heart mantra called the Eleven-Faced (Ekādaśamukha), which has been spoken by eleven billion Buddhas. I now speak it for the sake of all sentient beings, to cause all sentient beings to contemplate good dharmas, to cause all sentient beings to be free from sorrow and affliction, to remove all diseases of sentient beings, to eliminate all obstacles, calamities, strange occurrences, and bad dreams, to remove all untimely deaths, to subdue and soften all those with evil intentions, and to prevent all demons and evil spirits from causing obstacles. World-Honored One, I have never seen any deva (god), māra (demon), Brahmā (Brahma), Śakra (Indra), śrāmaṇa (ascetic), or brāhmaṇa (Brahmin) who can uphold such a mantra. Whether they read, recite, write, or propagate it, or use this mantra to protect their bodies, or use this mantra to consecrate water to bathe their bodies, or enter into battle, or are poisoned, by reciting this mantra, all misfortunes will be unable to harm them, except for past karmic retributions. This mantra is contemplated by all Buddhas, and this mantra is spoken by all Buddhas. World-Honored One, I recall that beyond countless kalpas (aeons) like the sands of the Ganges River, there was a Buddha named Śata-padma-locana-śikhā-pratihata-guṇa-prabhāsa-rāja-tathāgata (the Tathāgata King of Light of Unobstructed Merit, with a Hundred Lotus Eyes on His Crown). At that time, I was in that Buddha's presence, as the king among the great mantra-holding immortals, and only then did I obtain this mantra. When I obtained this mantra, ten'


方諸佛皆睹目前。睹見佛已忽然即得無生法忍。當知此咒有如是神力。亦能利益無量眾生。是故當知善男子善女人。有能晝夜慇勤讀誦勿令忘失。誦此咒時更莫他緣。于晨朝時洗浴其身。若不洗浴當漱口澡手。誦持此咒一百八遍。持此咒者現身即得十種果報。何等為十。一者身常無病。二者恒為十方諸佛憶念。三者一切財物衣服飲食。自然充足恒無乏少。四者能破一切怨敵。五者能使一切眾生皆生慈心。六者一切蠱毒一切熱病無能侵害。七者一切刀杖不能為害。八者一切水難不能漂溺。九者一切火難不能焚燒。十者不受一切橫死。是名為十。現身復得四種果報。何者為四。一者臨命終時得見十方無量諸佛。二者永不墮地獄。三者不為一切禽獸所害。四者命終之後生無量壽國。世尊我念過恒河沙數劫。復過恒河沙數劫。復過無量恒河沙數劫。爾時有佛名曼陀羅香如來。我于彼佛為優婆塞身。于彼佛所復得此咒。得此咒已於四萬劫超生死際。說此咒時得一切諸佛大慈大悲大喜大舍智慧藏法門。以此法門力故。能救一切眾生。一切牢獄系閉。杻械枷鎖臨當刑戮。水火等難種種苦惱。我恒救護令得解脫。一切夜叉羅剎以此咒力。令此羅剎皆發善心功德具足。即發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。我此神咒有如是力。設復有人犯四波羅夷

【English Translation】 English version All Buddhas in the ten directions can see you directly. Having seen the Buddha, one suddenly obtains the Anutpattika-dharmakshanti (無生法忍, the insight into the non-arising of all dharmas). Know that this mantra has such divine power and can also benefit immeasurable sentient beings. Therefore, know, good men and good women, that if you can diligently recite this mantra day and night, without forgetting it, and without thinking of other things while reciting it, and bathe your body in the morning, or if you cannot bathe, rinse your mouth and wash your hands, and recite this mantra one hundred and eight times, the one who holds this mantra will receive ten kinds of rewards in this very life. What are the ten? First, the body is always free from illness. Second, one is constantly remembered by all the Buddhas in the ten directions. Third, all wealth, clothing, and food are naturally abundant and never lacking. Fourth, one can destroy all enemies. Fifth, one can cause all sentient beings to generate loving-kindness. Sixth, all poisons and all feverish diseases cannot harm one. Seventh, all swords and staves cannot cause harm. Eighth, all water disasters cannot drown one. Ninth, all fire disasters cannot burn one. Tenth, one will not suffer any untimely death. These are called the ten rewards. In this very life, one also obtains four kinds of rewards. What are the four? First, at the time of death, one will see immeasurable Buddhas in the ten directions. Second, one will never fall into hell. Third, one will not be harmed by any birds or beasts. Fourth, after death, one will be reborn in Sukhavati (無量壽國, the Land of Ultimate Bliss). World Honored One, I remember passing through kalpas (劫, eons) as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and again passing through kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and again passing through immeasurable kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. At that time, there was a Buddha named Mandaragandha Tathagata (曼陀羅香如來). I was an Upasaka (優婆塞, a male lay devotee) in the presence of that Buddha. From that Buddha, I obtained this mantra. Having obtained this mantra, I transcended the boundary of birth and death in forty thousand kalpas. When reciting this mantra, I obtained the wisdom treasury dharma-gate of great loving-kindness, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity of all Buddhas. By the power of this dharma-gate, I can save all sentient beings, all those imprisoned in jails, bound by fetters and yokes, facing execution, and suffering from water, fire, and other calamities. I constantly protect them and enable them to be liberated. All Yakshas (夜叉, a type of guardian deity) and Rakshasas (羅剎, a type of demon), by the power of this mantra, cause these Rakshasas to generate good hearts, perfect their merits, and immediately generate the Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心, the mind of unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment). My divine mantra has such power. Suppose someone has committed the four Parajikas (波羅夷, the four root downfalls)


及五逆罪。能讀誦此咒一遍者。一切根本重罪悉得除滅。誦此咒者有如是功德。況復有人依此經教受持咒者。當知是人于萬萬億那由他那由他諸佛所。曾聞此法今還得聞。況復受持讀誦晝夜不忘者。是人若心所念者我滿其愿。若復有人於十四日朝或十五日。以香湯洗浴其身著新凈衣。一上廁一洗浴。如此凈衣不得上廁。行此法時竟日不食至於明旦。其道場中置觀世音像懸雜色幡蓋香華供養。初入道場時。必須殷重至心。諸十方諸佛慇勤懺悔。懺悔已訖在於像前。敷一坐具胡跪恭敬。至心誦持此咒。行此法者當知是人。得四萬劫離生死際。世尊我觀世音菩薩名字難可得聞。若復有人稱十萬億諸佛名字。或復有人稱觀世音菩薩名字者。彼二人福正等無異。

爾時觀世音菩薩。白佛言世尊。若善男子善女人及一切眾生。晝夜慇勤稱我名者。皆得阿毗跋致地。現身得離一切苦惱。一切障難一切怖畏。及三業罪悉得除滅。況復有人依此經教如法修行。當知是人即得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心如在掌中。佛告觀世音菩薩摩訶薩言。善哉善哉善男子。汝乃能於一切眾生起大慈大悲心。善男子當知汝等以此神力。救護一切眾生。必得成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心無有疑也。佛告觀世音菩薩摩訶薩言善男子如此神咒。我亦受持我亦印可。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 以及犯下五逆罪(殺父、殺母、殺阿羅漢、出佛身血、破和合僧)的人,如果能夠讀誦此咒一遍,一切根本重罪都能夠消除滅盡。誦持此咒的人有如此功德,更何況有人依照此經教受持此咒呢?應當知道這個人在萬萬億那由他(極大的數量單位)諸佛處,曾經聽聞此法,如今才能夠再次聽聞。更何況受持讀誦,晝夜不忘的人呢?這個人心中所念的,我(觀世音菩薩)會滿足他的願望。如果有人在十四日早上或者十五日,用香湯洗浴身體,穿上新的乾淨衣服,每次上廁所后都要洗浴,這樣穿的乾淨衣服不得再上廁所。行此法時,整日不吃東西直到第二天早上。在他的道場中,安置觀世音菩薩像,懸掛各種顏色的幡蓋,用香和花供養。剛進入道場時,必須殷重至誠,向十方諸佛慇勤懺悔。懺悔完畢后,在佛像前鋪設一個坐具,胡跪恭敬,至誠誦持此咒。行此法的人,應當知道這個人能夠脫離四萬劫的生死輪迴。世尊,我觀世音菩薩的名字難以聽聞,如果有人稱念十萬億諸佛的名字,或者有人稱念觀世音菩薩的名字,這兩個人的福德相等沒有差別。

這時,觀世音菩薩對佛說:『世尊,如果善男子、善女人以及一切眾生,晝夜慇勤稱念我的名字,都能夠得到阿毗跋致地(不退轉地),現世就能夠脫離一切苦惱、一切障礙、一切怖畏,以及身、口、意三業的罪過,都能夠消除滅盡。更何況有人依照此經教如法修行,應當知道這個人就能夠得到阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心(無上正等正覺之心),如同在掌握之中。』佛告訴觀世音菩薩摩訶薩(大菩薩)說:『善哉!善哉!善男子,你能夠對一切眾生髮起大慈大悲心。善男子,應當知道你們憑藉這種神力,救護一切眾生,必定能夠成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心,沒有懷疑。』佛告訴觀世音菩薩摩訶薩說:『善男子,如此神咒,我也受持,我也印可。』

【English Translation】 English version And those who commit the five heinous crimes (killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, shedding the blood of a Buddha, and disrupting the Sangha). If one can recite this mantra once, all fundamental grave sins will be eradicated. Those who recite this mantra have such merit. How much more so if someone relies on this scripture and teaching to uphold this mantra? Know that this person, at countless billions of Nayutas (extremely large number unit) of Buddhas, has heard this Dharma before and is now able to hear it again. How much more so for those who uphold, recite, and do not forget it day and night? Whatever this person thinks in their heart, I (Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva) will fulfill their wishes. If someone on the morning of the fourteenth day or the fifteenth day, bathes their body with fragrant water and puts on new, clean clothes, and bathes after each trip to the toilet, such clean clothes must not be used for going to the toilet again. While performing this practice, one should not eat for the entire day until the next morning. In their Mandala, place an image of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, hang various colored banners and canopies, and offer incense and flowers. When first entering the Mandala, one must be earnest and sincere, and diligently repent to all the Buddhas of the ten directions. After repenting, in front of the image, spread a seat, kneel respectfully, and sincerely recite this mantra. Those who perform this practice should know that this person will be liberated from the cycle of birth and death for forty thousand kalpas. World Honored One, my name, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, is difficult to hear. If someone recites the names of ten trillion Buddhas, or if someone recites the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, the merit of these two is equal and without difference.

At that time, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if good men, good women, and all sentient beings diligently recite my name day and night, they will all attain the stage of Avaivartika (non-retrogression), and in this life, they will be liberated from all suffering, all obstacles, all fears, and the sins of the three karmas (body, speech, and mind) will all be eradicated. How much more so if someone relies on this scripture and teaching to practice according to the Dharma? Know that this person will attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi (unsurpassed perfect enlightenment) as if it were in the palm of their hand.' The Buddha said to Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva (Great Bodhisattva): 'Excellent! Excellent! Good man, you are able to generate great compassion for all sentient beings. Good man, know that you, by this divine power, will protect all sentient beings and will surely attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi without doubt.' The Buddha said to Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva: 'Good man, I also uphold and endorse this divine mantra.'


善男子汝今說之。爾時觀世音菩薩摩訶薩。從坐而起偏袒右肩。胡跪合掌右膝著地。五體投地頂禮佛足。禮佛足已卻坐一面。白佛言世尊。我今當承佛神力而說咒曰。

爾時觀世音菩薩。白佛言。世尊此咒有如是神力最為上首。復說咒曰。

南無阿利耶跋路吉諦 攝婆羅耶 菩提薩埵耶 摩訶薩埵耶 多侄他 呵呵呵呵 一離彌離脂離毗離詰離醯離 娑波呵

時觀世音菩薩白佛言世尊此咒名咒水咒衣咒。若復有人入道場時。先以此咒咒水七遍以浴其身。浴其身已復以此咒。咒衣七遍著入道場。

南無阿利耶 跋路吉氐攝婆羅耶 菩提薩埵耶 摩訶薩埵耶 多侄他 晝樓晝樓 呵呵呵呵 娑波呵

此名咒香咒。初入道場時咒香七遍。然後乃燒。

If one is struck by evil spirits, or struck by Hariti (Mother of Demons), or struck by Rakshasa women, or struck by Pisacha demons, or struck by Putana demons, or struck by mad demons, or suffers from carbuncles, or suffers from fistula, or has sores and blisters on the body, or is bitten by snakes, or stung by scorpions, or stung by all poisonous insects, make mud from yellow earth, chant this mantra over it seven times, and apply it to the stung area, and all will be cured. If one suffers from wind disorders, chant over ghee seven times, apply it to the affected area and ingest it, and one will be cured. Or if one suffers from hemiplegia, with blocked ears and nose, use costus root with sesame oil, boil it on birch bark, and chant this mantra over it seven times, apply it to the affected area, and one will be cured. All illnesses, treated with this mantra, will be cured. The spiritual power of this mantra is inexhaustible. I, relying on the teachings of the scriptures, speak of it briefly.

At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if there are good men and good women who can practice according to the teachings of Avalokiteśvara, those good men and good women must use white sandalwood to make an image of Avalokiteśvara. The wood must be solid and not decayed. The body should be one foot and three inches tall, with eleven heads. The three faces in front should be bodhisattva faces, the three faces on the left side should be wrathful faces, the three faces on the right side should resemble bodhisattva faces with dog teeth protruding upwards, the face in the back should be a laughing face, and the face on the top should be a Buddha face. All faces should face forward and backward, adorned with light. Each of the eleven faces should wear a flower crown, and within each flower crown there should be Amitabha Buddha. Avalokiteśvara should hold a water vase in his left hand, with a lotus flower emerging from the mouth of the vase, and extend his right hand with a string of necklaces.'

The body of the statue must be carved with elaborate jeweled necklaces. At that time, if a person, after making this statue, wishes to fulfill their heart's desire, they should enter the Mandala (sacred space) from the first day of the month until the fifteenth day. Upon entering the Mandala, they must bathe after each toilet visit, and require three sets of clean clothes, changing clothes three times a day. They should wear one set in the morning, one set at noon, and one set in the evening. These clean clothes should not be placed on top of a screen. The practitioner should observe a long fast, not eating other flavored foods, only consuming barley milk porridge. The place for setting up the Mandala must be a clean room, wiped clean with mud, the ground smeared with fragrant mud, and then sprinkled with fragrant water. In the room, measure a square area of seven cubits in length and width. Erect pillars at the four corners and hang banners all around. Place a high seat in the center and place the Avalokiteśvara statue on it. The statue should face west. Scatter various flowers in the Mandala. Only burn incense such as agarwood and storax. From the first day to the seventh day, chant mantras three times a day. Chant one hundred and eight times in the morning, one hundred and eight times at noon, and one hundred and eight times in the evening. There is no need to offer food yet. At that time, the practitioner, after noon on the fifteenth day, takes a piece of agarwood, coats it with soma oil, chants the mantra once, and throws it into the sandalwood fire. This is done sequentially until all one thousand and eight pieces are used up. At that time, the practitioner must not eat anything at all for these two days. On the night of the fifteenth day, Avalokiteśvara will come to the Mandala. The sandalwood statue will naturally shake.
