The Sutra of the Heart-Dharani of the Amoghapasa

Translated by Tripitaka Master Bodhiruci from Southern India of the Tang Dynasty under Imperial Order

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan (World-Honored One) was in the palace of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) on Mount Potalaka (Avalokiteśvara's abode). The place was adorned all around with countless precious Sala trees (a type of tree), Tamala trees (a type of tree), Champaka trees (Magnolia champaca), Ashoka trees (Saraca asoca), Atimuktaka (a type of creeper), and various other precious trees. He was with a gathering of eight thousand great Bhiksus (monks), ninety-nine koti niyuta hundred thousands (koti is ten million, niyuta is one hundred million) of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas), and countless hundred thousands of Pure Abode Devas, Isvara Devas, Maha-isvara Devas, and Maha-brahma Devas as their leaders, as well as countless hundred thousands of other devas and humans, who surrounded the Buddha as he expounded the Dharma. At that time, the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-Mahasattva rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, smiled and said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, I have a divine mantra-heart called the Amoghapasa (the unfailing lasso of Avalokiteśvara). In the past, in the ninety-first kalpa (aeon), there was a world called Superior Vision, and the Buddha there was named Loknatharaja Tathagata (the World Lord King Thus Come One). I received the Amoghapasa mantra-heart from that Buddha. World-Honored One, because I uphold this divine mantra, I have taught countless hundred thousands of Pure Abode Devas, Isvara Devas, and Maha-isvara Devas, leading them to aspire to Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unsurpassed perfect enlightenment). Because of the power of this merit, I have obtained ten billion samadhis (meditative states), with the Unfailing Wonderful Wisdom as the foremost. World-Honored One, if there is this mantra-heart in any place, twelve billion devas, such as Maha-isvara, will come to protect that place, like a Buddha stupa. World-Honored One, wherever this divine mantra-heart resides, the sentient beings there should know that they have planted various good roots in the presence of countless hundred thousands of koti niyuta hundred thousands of Buddhas. World-Honored One, if someone hears this mantra'


心。是人先造惡業行於非法。毀辱賢善誹謗正法。及以誹謗一切諸佛菩薩聲聞緣覺。決定應墮無間大地獄中。世尊彼人若聞此神咒心而生悔愧。於一日夜受持齋戒讀此神咒。即能銷滅一切罪業。或復令其所有罪業現世輕受。若得熱病。或一日二日乃至七日。若眼耳鼻舌唇齒龂腭心腹臍脅手足支節等痛。若得痔病下痢秘澀白癩大癩。若疥若癬若黑瘡赤瘡漏瘡皰瘡。若癲癇等病若厭禱蠱毒。繫縛杖捶誹謗罵辱。及余諸惡逼惱身心並諸怪夢。我今說以現受故。無間惡業即得銷滅。況諸眾生清凈信者受持此咒。一切罪業而不滅耶。世尊若有眾生。以其諂曲虛誑之心。聞我所說不空罥索咒心。詐現受持。若自書若令他書。若為他說令其聽受。乃至向彼傍生耳邊誦此咒心。及思惟神咒章句。不譭謗故無相故。無生故無分別故。遲至故無作故。離染故平等故不捨故離蘊故。如是修習相應方便。由此憶念佛功德力。彼十方面各有千佛出現其前。行者見已所有罪業皆悉銷滅。世尊我今略說。乃至有人抄寫此經。置於家中禮拜供養。亦得無量無邊福德。何況受持讀誦之者。世尊若有眾生。各各自為欲勝他故。或怖主故怖怨仇故。怖惡獸故怖危難故。或隨他故求尊貴故求財寶故。聽聞如是神咒心經。雖復聽聞不生恭敬。或致誹謗輕慢毀訾。由

【English Translation】 English version 'Heart' [mantra]. If a person first creates evil karma, acts unlawfully, insults the virtuous and good, slanders the True Dharma, and even slanders all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Śrāvakas (Hearers), and Pratyekabuddhas (Solitary Realizers), they are destined to fall into the Avīci (Uninterrupted) Great Hell. World Honored One, if that person hears this heart mantra and feels remorse, observing the precepts and fasting for one day and one night, reciting this divine mantra, they can immediately eliminate all their sins, or cause all their sins to be lightly received in this present life. If they contract a fever, for one day, two days, or even seven days; if they have pain in their eyes, ears, nose, tongue, lips, teeth, gums, palate, heart, abdomen, navel, ribs, hands, feet, limbs, joints, etc.; if they contract hemorrhoids, diarrhea, constipation, vitiligo (white leprosy), leprosy (great leprosy); if it is scabies, ringworm, black sores, red sores, fistula sores, pustule sores; if it is epilepsy or other diseases; if they are harmed by witchcraft, curses, or poisons; bound, beaten with sticks, slandered, reviled, and other evils oppress their body and mind, along with all kinds of strange dreams, I now say that because of receiving the retribution in this present life, the evil karma of Avīci Hell will be immediately eliminated. How much more so for those sentient beings with pure faith who uphold this mantra, how could all their sins not be eliminated? World Honored One, if there are sentient beings who, with their flattering and deceitful hearts, hear the heart mantra of the Amoghapāśa (Infallible Net), pretending to uphold it, whether they write it themselves or have others write it, or speak it for others to hear, even reciting this heart mantra into the ears of animals, and contemplate the verses of the divine mantra, because they do not slander, because of no-form, because of no-birth, because of no-discrimination, because of slowness, because of no-action, because of being free from defilement, because of equality, because of non-abandonment, because of being free from aggregates, practicing in accordance with such expedient means, by this recollection of the power of the Buddha's merits, a thousand Buddhas from each of the ten directions appear before them. Upon seeing this, all the practitioner's sins are completely eliminated. World Honored One, I now briefly say that even if someone copies this scripture, places it in their home, and makes offerings to it, they will also obtain immeasurable and boundless merit. How much more so for those who uphold and recite it? World Honored One, if there are sentient beings who, each for their own sake, desire to overcome others, or because they fear their ruler, or fear their enemies, or fear evil beasts, or fear dangers, or follow others, seeking honor, seeking wealth, hear such a heart mantra scripture, even if they hear it, they do not generate a respectful heart, or even slander, belittle, and disparage it.'


觀自在菩薩威神力故。令如是人亦生勝福。譬如有人。取栴檀香或沉麝等。罵詈毀訾而碎抹之用涂其身。而彼香等終無是念。此人毀訾我故。吝其香氣而不與之而栴檀等本性芬馥作其香事。世尊此神咒心亦復如是。雖有誹謗毀訾。或復諂詐書寫受持供養。而皆與作善根因緣。生生之處。常不捨離戒定智慧福德資糧。于當來世戒香具足。世尊若有善男子善女人。若苾芻苾芻尼。鄔波索迦鄔波斯迦。于月八日專心齋戒不雜余語。誦此不空罥索咒心七遍。彼人現身得二十種殊勝利益。云何二十。一者身無餘病。二者由先作業有諸疾病速得銷滅。三者其身光澤面板細軟見者歡喜。四者眾人愛敬密護諸根。五者當得財寶。六者得財寶已不為盜賊之所劫掠。七者不為水火之所漂焚。八者不為王力之所侵奪。九者所作事業皆善成辦。十者所種苗稼。不為惡風暴雨霜雹蟲蝗之所損害。十一者若誦此咒心七遍。咒灰及水八方上下灑散結界。一切災難皆得銷滅。十二者不為諸惡鬼等奪其精氣。十三者一切有情愛樂喜見。十四者不怖怨仇。十五者設有怨仇速疾和解。十六者不畏人及非人之所侵害。厭蠱邪魅不能中傷。十七者無有猛利煩惱及隨煩惱。十八者火刀毒藥傷害不死。十九者諸天善神常所擁護。二十者所生之處於中不離慈悲喜捨。如是

【English Translation】 English version By the majestic power of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (the Bodhisattva who perceives the sounds of the world), such a person also generates supreme merit. For example, if someone takes sandalwood (candana, a precious fragrant wood) or musk, etc., and curses, reviles, and grinds them into powder to smear on their body, those fragrances would not think, 'This person is reviling me, so I will withhold my fragrance from them.' The nature of sandalwood and other fragrances is to be fragrant and emit their scent. World Honored One, this heart mantra of the divine mantra is also like that. Even if there are those who slander, revile, or write, uphold, and make offerings with flattery and deceit, it will still create causes and conditions for good roots for them, so that in every life, they will never be separated from the resources of morality, concentration, wisdom, merit, and virtue, and in the future world, they will be complete with the fragrance of morality. World Honored One, if there are good men or good women, or bhikshus (ordained monks), bhikshunis (ordained nuns), upasakas (lay male devotees), or upasikas (lay female devotees), who on the eighth day of each month, single-mindedly observe the precepts and abstain from idle talk, and recite this Amoghapasa-hrdaya-mantra (the heart mantra of the Unfailing Net) seven times, that person will attain twenty supreme benefits in this life. What are the twenty? First, the body will be free from all diseases. Second, all diseases arising from past karma will be quickly eradicated. Third, the body will be radiant, the skin will be smooth and soft, and all who see it will rejoice. Fourth, they will be loved and respected by all, and their senses will be secretly protected. Fifth, they will obtain wealth and treasures. Sixth, having obtained wealth and treasures, they will not be robbed by thieves. Seventh, they will not be drowned or burned by water or fire. Eighth, they will not be seized by the power of kings. Ninth, all their undertakings will be successfully accomplished. Tenth, the seedlings they plant will not be damaged by evil winds, torrential rains, frost, hail, or locusts. Eleventh, if they recite this heart mantra seven times, and sprinkle the ashes or water that has been blessed by the mantra in the eight directions, above and below, to create a boundary, all calamities will be extinguished. Twelfth, they will not have their essence taken away by evil spirits. Thirteenth, all sentient beings will love to see them. Fourteenth, they will not fear enemies. Fifteenth, even if there are enemies, they will quickly reconcile. Sixteenth, they will not fear harm from humans or non-humans, and witchcraft and evil spells will not be able to harm them. Seventeenth, they will be free from fierce afflictions and secondary afflictions. Eighteenth, they will not die from harm caused by fire, knives, or poison. Nineteenth, they will always be protected by gods and benevolent spirits. Twentieth, in the places where they are born, they will never be separated from loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Thus it is.


二十種殊勝利益。應當希求。復有八法何等為八。一者臨命終時。聖觀自在菩薩作苾芻像現其人前。二者臨命終時。安樂舍壽無諸痛苦。三者臨命終時正念現前心不錯亂。四者臨命終時手不紛亂足不伸縮。五者臨命終時而不漏泄大小便利。六者設使有病不滯床枕。七者臨命終時不覆面死。八者臨命終時得無盡辯才。既命終已隨愿往生諸佛凈土。及不捨離諸善知識。世尊若善男子善女人等。不食酒肉薰辛及殘惡觸。日日三時時別三遍。誦此神咒心法門。殊勝功德晝夜增長。了知一切有情有力無力隨其聽聞。菩薩不應心生秘惜。永離諸惡慳吝嫉妒。常為利益一切有情故。速趣菩提入菩薩位。言菩提者說名般若。言薩埵者即是方便。此二種法。于諸有情當得一切利益安樂。世尊我今欲為利益安樂諸四部眾。及余有情造罪業者。惟愿世尊哀愍許可。于如來前說此咒心。爾時世尊。告聖觀自在菩薩摩訶薩言。有情清凈今正是時。我亦隨喜此神咒心。於後時分為行菩薩乘者而作父母。令諸菩薩所作事業速得成就。爾時聖觀自在菩薩摩訶薩。瞻仰尊顏目不暫舍。而白佛言。世尊惟愿如來聽我說此神咒。一切菩薩所應敬禮。此解脫法門哀愍世間。利益安樂無量有情。欲受持者應先敬禮三世諸佛。及諸菩薩獨覺聲聞。敬禮正至正行。復應

【English Translation】 English version There are twenty kinds of supreme benefits that one should aspire to. Furthermore, there are eight excellent qualities. What are these eight? First, at the time of death, the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (觀世音菩薩) appears in the form of a Bhikshu (比丘, monk) before that person. Second, at the time of death, one peacefully relinquishes life without any suffering. Third, at the time of death, right mindfulness is present, and the mind is not confused or disordered. Fourth, at the time of death, the hands do not flail, and the feet do not stretch out uncontrollably. Fifth, at the time of death, there is no incontinence of urine or feces. Sixth, even if one is ill, one will not be bedridden for a long time. Seventh, at the time of death, one does not die face down. Eighth, at the time of death, one obtains inexhaustible eloquence. Having passed away, one can be reborn in the pure lands of all Buddhas according to one's wishes, and one will not be separated from virtuous friends. World Honored One, if good men and good women do not consume alcohol, meat, pungent foods, or defiled substances, and recite this divine mantra heart-dharma three times each day, the supreme merits will increase day and night. Knowing that all sentient beings, whether strong or weak, will hear it as they are able, Bodhisattvas should not be secretive or stingy, and should forever be free from all evil deeds, miserliness, and jealousy, constantly seeking to benefit all sentient beings, quickly approaching Bodhi (菩提, enlightenment) and entering the position of a Bodhisattva. The term Bodhi refers to Prajna (般若, wisdom). The term Sattva (薩埵, sentient being) refers to skillful means. These two dharmas can bring all benefits and happiness to all sentient beings. World Honored One, I now wish to benefit and bring happiness to the four assemblies (Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Upasakas, Upasikas) and other sentient beings who have committed sinful deeds. At that time, the World Honored One said to the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva (觀世音大菩薩): 'Sentient beings are pure, now is the right time. I also rejoice in this divine mantra-heart. In the future, it will act as parents to those who practice the Bodhisattva path, enabling the endeavors of all Bodhisattvas to be quickly accomplished.' At that time, the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva, gazing upon the Venerable One's face without a moment's distraction, said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, may the Tathagata listen to me as I speak this divine mantra, which all Bodhisattvas should revere. This Dharma-door of liberation has compassion for the world, benefiting and bringing happiness to countless sentient beings. Those who wish to uphold it should first pay homage to the Buddhas of the three times, as well as all Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas (獨覺, Solitary Buddhas), and Sravakas (聲聞, Hearers), paying homage to the rightly attained and rightly practiced. This is the heart of the divine mantra. Reciting it brings immediate results, and all endeavors will be successful. Recite it three times each during the three periods of the day, and the five heinous offenses will be eradicated, and all karmic obstacles will be purified. Burn eaglewood incense, or scatter ashes and water, or use white mustard seeds to create a boundary. Alternatively, take Khadira wood (a type of tree) to make pegs, chant the mantra twenty-one times, and then nail them in the four directions. If suffering from various cold and heat malarial diseases, chant on a thread and tie it as a cord to wear, and the illness will be cured. For various patients, chant on ghee or water, and have the patient ingest or apply it, and they will be cured. If afflicted by witchcraft, make human figures from dough, mud, or wax, cut them with a knife, and then have the bewitched person constantly wear the chanted cord. If suffering from abdominal pain, chant on salt water and have them drink it. If encountering various poisons, chant on earth or water, and applying or ingesting it will neutralize the poison. If suffering from eye disease, chant on a white thread and make it into a cord to tie around the ear. If suffering from toothache, chant on Khara-phiro wood (a type of tree) and rub and chew it. If suffering from ear pain, chant on sesame oil and drip it into the ear. If encountering various battles, disputes, or slanders, take the chanted water and wash the face. If wanting to protect a royal capital or settlement, take four bottles filled with water, and make great offerings of food and drink. The chanter should wear new and clean clothes, and reciting this mantra will bring auspiciousness, and then sprinkle the water.

【English Translation】 English version: Perfume. Place eight parts of food or sixty-four parts. Offer in this way, removing pungent and spicy things, etc. Burn aloeswood incense, and one should abstain from food for three days and three nights, or one day and one night. If eating, one should only eat three kinds of daily food. During each day, bathe three times, wear new and clean clothes, and recite the mantra one thousand and eight times. After completing the mantra recitation, the practitioner will see their own body in front of the image, with radiant light, like a fierce flame. Having seen this, joy arises in the heart. Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (the Bodhisattva Who Observes the Sounds of the World) will then appear before them, fulfilling all wishes and requests. If one desires invisibility, one should take orpiment or Anjana medicine and recite the mantra one thousand and eight times, and one will become invisible, traveling through the air, obtaining the Amoghavajra Samādhi (a type of Samadhi) adorned with the foremost of infallible wisdom. All desired pleasures will be accomplished. Having spoken thus, the Bhagavan (one of the titles of the Buddha) rejoiced and praised. At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (the great Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva), as well as the Pure Abode Devas, the Saha World Lord (the lord of the Saha world), Maheśvara (Shiva), and all the Bodhisattvas, great Śrāvakas, etc., received the Buddha's words and joyfully practiced them.
