如是我聞。一時佛在香醉山五髻乾闥婆王宮。彼有種種鼓樂絃歌出微妙音。
爾時世尊處大殿中。與諸菩薩摩訶薩眾俱。復有諸大聖眾皆來集會。所謂有學無學諸聲聞眾。並無量無邊天龍夜叉乾闥婆阿修羅迦樓羅緊那羅摩睺羅伽人非人等。復有無量無邊成就持明持金剛者。金剛手及忿怒王持明王百千等眾。復有具種種持明寶髻佛頂輪王等眾。復有宿曜並母鬼母鬼主。及諸釋梵大自在天那羅延天慶自在天大黑天神童子天夜摩天水天風天四天王天並五通仙人等。俱來在會作廣大供養。圍繞承事合掌恭敬。
爾時世尊處於眾會。譬如須彌顯于大海。是時五髻乾闥婆王。與七十二百千乾闥婆女。作種種妓樂來詣佛所。到已頭面禮足。繞佛三匝卻住一面。合掌向佛而作是言世尊我今愿聞利益之事。唯愿世尊為我宣說。彼聖多羅菩薩。即是諸佛如來之慈心。是大明王降魔最勝。是大持明是大輪王。廣顯甚深具大勢力。唯愿世尊悲慜於我及天人阿修羅等。常得利益獲安樂故。宣說聖多羅菩薩一百八名。爾時世尊受五髻乾闥婆王請

當時,世尊處於大眾之中,譬如須彌山(Mount Sumeru)顯現在大海之上。這時,五髻乾闥婆王(Gandharva King with Five Topknots)與七十二百千乾闥婆女,作種種歌舞音樂來到佛的處所。到達后,頭面禮足,繞佛三圈,退到一旁站立,合掌向佛說道:『世尊,我現在希望聽聞利益之事。唯愿世尊為我宣說。那位聖多羅菩薩(Tara Bodhisattva),即是諸佛如來(Tathagatas)的慈心,是大明王(Great Vidyaraja),降魔最為殊勝,是大持明(Great Vidyadhara),是大輪王(Great Chakravartin),廣為顯現甚深,具備大勢力。唯愿世尊悲憫於我和天人(Devas)、阿修羅(Asuras)等,常得利益,獲得安樂的緣故,宣說聖多羅菩薩(Tara Bodhisattva)一百零八名。』當時,世尊接受了五髻乾闥婆王(Gandharva King with Five Topknots)的請求。
【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Holy Tara Bodhisattva Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by the Tripitaka Master Fa Xian, Great Master of Mingjiao, Grand Master of Court Service, Acting Vice President of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, by Imperial Order from the Western Heaven.
Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the palace of the Gandharva King with Five Topknots on Mount Fragrant Intoxication. There were various drums, music, strings, and songs producing subtle sounds.
At that time, the World-Honored One was in the great hall, together with all the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Moreover, all the great sages came to assemble, including Shravakas with and without learning, and immeasurable and boundless Devas and Nagas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Asuras, Garudas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, humans and non-humans, and so on. Furthermore, there were immeasurable and boundless accomplished Vidyadharas and Vajradharas, Vajrapani, and hundreds of thousands of Wrathful Kings, Vidyadhara Kings, and so on. There were also assemblies with various Crown Jewel Buddhas, and so on. There were also constellations, Matrkas, Mistress of Matrkas, and all the Shakra and Brahma, Maheshvara, Narayana, Nandikeshvara, Mahakala, Kumara, Yama, Varuna, Vayu, the Four Heavenly Kings, and Rishis with Five Supernatural Powers, and so on, all coming to the assembly, making vast offerings, surrounding and serving, joining their palms in reverence.
At that time, the World-Honored One was in the midst of the assembly, like Mount Sumeru appearing in the great ocean. At this time, the Gandharva King with Five Topknots, with seventy-two hundred thousand Gandharva women, came to the Buddha's place with various songs and music. Having arrived, they bowed their heads to his feet, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and stood to one side, joining their palms and saying to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, I now wish to hear about beneficial matters. May the World-Honored One explain to me. That Holy Tara Bodhisattva is the compassionate heart of all Tathagatas, the Great Vidyaraja, the most victorious in subduing demons, the Great Vidyadhara, the Great Chakravartin, widely manifesting the profound, possessing great power. May the World-Honored One have compassion on me and the Devas, Asuras, and so on, so that we may always receive benefits and obtain happiness, and speak the one hundred and eight names of Holy Tara Bodhisattva.' At that time, the World-Honored One accepted the request of the Gandharva King with Five Topknots.
已。贊言善哉善哉乾闥婆王。汝能問于如來如是之義。令諸天人一切眾會。得大利益獲安樂故。汝當諦聽善思念之。我今為汝次第宣說。時彼乾闥婆王聞佛語已受教而聽。
爾時世尊為彼乾闥婆王及一切眾會。先說聖多羅菩薩陀羅尼曰。

爾時世尊說此陀羅尼已。復為乾闥婆王及一切眾會。宣說多羅菩薩一百八名。而說頌曰。
是多羅菩薩 本從阿字生 或生諸行相 不生亦不滅 是相如虛空 虛空性生故 隨應現本相 相一多無礙 色相現無邊 善寂體純一 常現幻化相 密語真實語 攝大真實理 真實行常行 施於無所畏 寂靜常除恚

這時,世尊說了這個陀羅尼后,又為乾闥婆王和一切大眾,宣說了多羅菩薩(Tārā-bodhisattva)一百零八個名號,並說了頌:

【English Translation】 English version: The Buddha said, 'Excellent! Excellent, Gandharva-rāja (king of the Gandharvas, a type of celestial being). You are able to ask the Tathagata (如來, 'Thus Come One', an epithet of the Buddha) about such a principle, causing all devas (天, gods) and humans, and the entire assembly, to obtain great benefit and acquire peace and happiness. You should listen carefully and contemplate it well. I will now explain it to you in order.' At that time, that Gandharva-rāja, having heard the Buddha's words, received the teaching and listened.
At that time, the World Honored One, for that Gandharva-rāja and the entire assembly, first spoke the sacred Tārā-bodhisattva (聖多羅菩薩) dhāraṇī (陀羅尼, a type of mantra), saying:
'Namo samanta narasimhabhyah sarva tathagatebhyah arhatebhyah samyaksambuddhebhyah namo bhagavate arya taraye om sarva tathagata tathata bhuta koti parisuddhe buddhe sarva tathagata sarva dharma ta gagan amala visuddha dharmate maha naya parivara svaha'
At that time, after the World Honored One spoke this dhāraṇī, he further proclaimed the one hundred and eight names of Tārā-bodhisattva (多羅菩薩) for the Gandharva-rāja and the entire assembly, and spoke the following verse:
'This Tārā-bodhisattva, originally arises from the letter 'A', Or generates various appearances, neither arising nor ceasing. This appearance is like empty space, because it arises from the nature of empty space. Manifesting its original form according to conditions, the form is one and many, without obstruction. The appearance of form manifests without limit, virtuous and tranquil, the essence is purely one. Constantly manifesting illusory appearances, secret speech is true speech. Embracing the great true principle, true practice is constantly performed. Bestowing fearlessness, tranquility constantly removes anger.'
離諸怖畏苦 善破煩惱籠 能解三有縛 苦海悉永離 成就法能為 自他俱成就 唯施最上法 總持自在王 亦從總持生 施總持大義 相應大自在 心意具相應 不即相應相 相應相不離 定意常不動 有動皆寂然 常處蓮華座 亦從蓮華生 目凈如青蓮 常為眾生目 清凈最殊妙 慈眼視眾生 佛慧眼無漏 具純一大悲 常發大悲心 常行大悲行 亦從大悲生 常具大悲心 難伏垂悲愍 以悲普遍降 所有苦惱者 除苦令歡喜 法施甘露味 濟苦獲安樂 苦海意清涼 是名自在母 普世為照耀 妙容熾盛光 眾寶珠髻冠 清凈光圓滿 摩尼真珠飾 髮髻色紺青 螺文相右旋 莊嚴無為體 不善者令善 一切愿皆圓 無喻莊嚴身 善意亦善逝 寂靜常安樂 大力如意通 六念具六通 得諸波羅蜜 善說四諦法 開迷大辯才 幻化苦海中 現行幻化相 持劍破煩惱 弓箭與三叉 缽致仗及槍 都摩啰爍帝 沒誐啰金剛 種種諸器仗 觀視所持箭 悉施無所畏 手擲金剛杵 現作無礙通 能伏外敵軍 表剎現幢相 具大智慧力 善破勇猛軍 諸闇煩惱銷 魔

【English Translation】 English version Away from all fears and sufferings, Skillfully breaking the cage of afflictions, Able to liberate from the bonds of the three realms (desire realm, form realm, formless realm), Eternally free from the ocean of suffering. Accomplishing the Dharma, able to benefit both oneself and others, Only bestowing the supreme Dharma, The King of Sovereignty over Dharani (Total Retention). Also born from Dharani, Bestowing the great meaning of Dharani, Corresponding with great sovereignty, Mind and intention fully corresponding. Not identical to the aspect of correspondence, The aspect of correspondence not separate. The mind in Samadhi (meditative concentration) is always unmoving, All movements return to stillness. Always dwelling on a lotus seat, Also born from a lotus. Eyes pure like blue lotuses, Always serving as the eyes of sentient beings. Pure and most supremely wonderful, Viewing sentient beings with compassionate eyes. The Buddha's wisdom eye without leakage, Possessing pure and vast compassion. Always generating great compassion, Always practicing great compassion. Also born from great compassion, Always possessing great compassion. Showing compassion to the difficult to subdue, Universally subduing with compassion. For all those who are suffering, Removing suffering and bringing joy. Bestowing the taste of Dharma nectar, Relieving suffering and obtaining peace and happiness. Cooling the mind in the ocean of suffering, This is named the Sovereign Mother (Avalokiteśvara). Illuminating the world, The wonderful face with blazing light. A crown of jewels and pearls on the hair, Pure light perfectly complete. Adorned with Mani jewels and pearls, The color of the hair is dark blue. The whorls of the conch shell turning to the right, Adorning the unconditioned body. Making the unkind kind, All wishes fulfilled. An incomparably adorned body, Kind intention also well departed (Nirvana). Silent and always joyful, Great power and wish-fulfilling siddhi (supernatural power). The six recollections (recollection of the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, precepts, generosity, and devas) possessing the six abhijñās (supernormal knowledges: divine eye, divine ear, knowing others' minds, remembering past lives, magical powers, and extinction of outflows), Obtaining the many Paramitas (perfections: generosity, morality, patience, diligence, concentration, wisdom). Skillfully expounding the Four Noble Truths (suffering, origin, cessation, path), Opening up delusion, possessing great eloquence. In the illusory ocean of suffering, Manifesting and practicing illusory appearances. Holding a sword to cut through afflictions, Bow and arrow, and trident. Bowl, Zhi, staff, and spear, Dhumara Shakti (Dhumara Power), Mogara Vajra (Mogara Diamond Scepter), Various weapons. Observing the arrows held, Bestowing all fearlessness. Throwing the Vajra (diamond scepter) with the hand, Manifesting as unobstructed siddhi. Able to subdue the armies of external paths, Manifesting the image of a banner in the Buddha-field. Possessing great wisdom and power, Skillfully breaking through the courageous armies. Dissipating all dark afflictions, Subduing Mara (the demon).

Actually dwelling in the only truth (Abiding in the true reality), fame and renown are universally proclaimed (fame spreads universally) Constantly bestowing love, respect, and vows (Frequently giving love, respect, and vows), conquering oneself and then conquering others (conquering oneself and also conquering others) Joyful giving is constantly practiced (Joyful giving is frequently practiced), 【English Translation】 English version The Vehicle: Ten Real Truths Abiding in ten Vajra (diamond-like, indestructible) sentences, representing the ten Dharmas (laws, principles) of the Buddha-land. Ten wisdoms dispel darkness, the all-seeing eyes of Avalokiteśvara (觀世音, the Bodhisattva of Compassion). Possessing great and wondrous forms, boundless as the void. Sometimes appearing as a five-powers (five supernatural powers) immortal, possessing the appearance of self-mastery through precepts. Free from desire, the body worthy of offerings, the tranquil path is always peaceful. Praised by the perfectly enlightened one, she is Tārā Bodhisattva (多羅菩薩).
At that time, the World Honored One, having spoken this verse, addressed the Gandharva King (乾闥婆王, a celestial musician) and all the assembly: 'These are the one hundred and eight names of Tārā Bodhisattva. I have already proclaimed them for you. You should wholeheartedly receive and uphold these one hundred and eight names and the Dhāraṇī (陀羅尼, mantra) of Tārā Bodhisattva. The Buddhas of the past and future have spoken and will speak them, for the benefit and compassion of all sentient beings. If there are good men or good women who generate a sincere mind, in the early morning, either for themselves or for others, reciting these one hundred and eight names and the Dhāraṇī of Tārā Bodhisattva, even silently reciting them, or using a piece of silk as a banner, or lawfully painting an image of the Bodhisattva on a clean wall with the most exquisite colors, or making a form of the Bodhisattva from sandalwood, accomplishing it at will with a pure mind. Then, before the image of the Bodhisattva, set up various offerings, and three times a day, with palms joined, pay homage and contemplate with a sincere mind according to the Dharma, reciting these one hundred and eight names and the Dhāraṇī. This Tārā Bodhisattva possesses great power, is most auspicious, seeks to eliminate all sins, and skillfully destroys the armies of demons, being good in the beginning, middle, and end, and is able to bestow the Dharma of accomplishment upon them. If there is someone who generates a sincere mind, reciting once, seven times, or even twenty-seven times, and does not omit any words or phrases during the recitation, that person will obtain all wealth, auspicious events, and the Dharma of accomplishment according to their wishes, without any obstacles. They will obtain the protection of all sages and saints, who will conceal their bodies and constantly protect them. Furthermore, they will obtain the protection of the Devas (天, gods), Nāgas (龍, dragons), Yakshas (夜叉, a type of spirit), Śakra (釋, Indra,帝釋天), Brahma (梵,梵天), the Lokapālas (護世, the world protectors), Nārāyaṇa (那羅延天, Vishnu), Mahadeva (大自在天, Shiva), as well as the Mother of Ghosts, Mahākāla (大黑天神, the Great Black Deva), Vinayaka (頻那夜迦, Ganesha), Nandikeśvara (慶自在天), and so on. Furthermore, they will obtain the approval of all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas (緣覺, independently enlightened ones), Śrāvakas (聲聞, disciples), all Wrathful Kings, and Mahāvajradeva Vidyārāja (大威德明王), who will all say: 'Excellent, excellent, good man. You possess the conduct of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. You shall be born in Sukhāvatī (蘇珂嚩帝, the Pure Land of Bliss).'
佛剎。是時五髻乾闥婆王。歡喜踴躍心生信重。即從座起自解己身。無價瓔珞金銀真珠摩尼珍寶種種嚴身之具。供養于佛合掌恭敬。瞻仰世尊而說贊曰。
善哉世尊 甚奇善逝 常以悲心 救護一切 而能為我 及於眾會 說此最上 真實之義
爾時世尊說是經已。彼諸菩薩摩訶薩。及諸聲聞並持明者。大忿怒主一切明王。諸天人眾及五髻乾闥婆等。聞佛所說皆大歡喜信受奉行。

【English Translation】 English version: Buddhakṣetra (Buddha-field, the land of a Buddha). At that time, Pañcaśikha Gandharva-rāja (the king of the Gandharvas with five crests, a celestial musician) rejoiced, leaped with joy, and generated great faith and respect in his heart. He immediately rose from his seat, removed the priceless necklaces, gold, silver, pearls, mani jewels, and various precious ornaments from his body, offered them to the Buddha, joined his palms respectfully, gazed at the World-Honored One, and spoke in praise: 『Excellent, World-Honored One! How wondrous, Sugata (Well-Gone One, Tathagata)! You always use compassion to protect all beings, and are able to explain this supreme and true meaning for me and the assembly.』 At that time, after the World-Honored One finished speaking this sutra, those Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (great Bodhisattvas), as well as the Śrāvakas (hearers of the Dharma) and Vidyādharas (mantra holders), Mahākrodharāja (great wrathful kings), the assembly of gods and humans, and Pañcaśikha Gandharva, and others, hearing what the Buddha said, were all very happy, believed, accepted, and practiced it respectfully.
