The Akasagarbha Bodhisattva's Most Excellent Heart Dharani for Seeking and Retaining Learning, Which Fulfills All Wishes

From the 'Accomplishing All Meanings' Chapter of the Vajrasekhara Sutra

Translated by Tripitaka Master Shanwuwei from Central India of the Great Tang Dynasty under Imperial Decree

At that time, Bhagavan (Bhagavan, the World-Honored One) entered the Samadhi (samadhi, meditative absorption) of Equality of All Paramitas (paramita, perfections). Having arisen from that Samadhi, he then spoke this Most Excellent Heart Dharani of Akasagarbha Bodhisattva, which fulfills all wishes:

Bhagavan said: 'This dharani (dharani, mantra) is spoken in unison by all Buddhas of the past, present, and future. If one can constantly recite this dharani, all karmic obstacles, including the five heinous offenses committed since beginningless time, will be completely eradicated. One will always be protected and cherished by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Until one attains Buddhahood, Akasagarbha Bodhisattva will constantly follow and protect one in every place one is born, causing all sentient beings to be delighted to see one. All virtuous wishes will be fulfilled without exception. All suffering and afflictions will be completely eliminated. One will always be born in the realms of humans and devas, and will not fall into the evil realms. In every birth, one will always remember one's past lives. Even without performing additional rituals, merely reciting this dharani constantly will bring such blessings. If one wishes to add rituals to hold this dharani for seeking and retaining learning, one should first draw a full moon on white silk, fine cloth, or a clean board. Within it, draw an image of Akasagarbha Bodhisattva. The size should not be less than one elbow in length, or even larger, according to one's ability. The Bodhisattva and the full moon should be proportionally sized. The body should be golden in color. The Bodhisattva should be seated in a half-lotus position on a jeweled lotus flower, with the right leg pressing on the left. The face should be exceptionally beautiful, with a joyful and delighted expression. On the jeweled crown, there should be five Buddha images seated in the lotus position. The Bodhisattva's left hand holds a white lotus flower, slightly tinged with red. On the'

【English Translation】 English version Having properly formed this mudra (hand gesture), place it on the top of the head and recite the dharani (mantra) once. Then place it on the right shoulder and recite it again. The left shoulder, heart, and throat should also be treated in the same way. After performing this self-protection ritual, all Buddhas and Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva (Ākāśagarbha, the Bodhisattva symbolizing wisdom as boundless as space) will embrace this person. All sins and obstacles will immediately be extinguished, body and mind will be purified, and blessings and wisdom will increase. All demons and Vinayaka (Vinayaka, obstacle-creating deities) will be unable to take advantage. Again, form the previous mudra, hold pure water in the palm, and recite the dharani once, sprinkling it on the scented paste and other offerings, as well as on the altar and the area near the altar. Again, form the self-protection mudra as before, place it on the scented paste, and recite the dharani once. The remaining flowers, incense, and even the wooden altar should each be treated in this way. After performing this ritual, the flowers, incense, and other items will immediately become pure. Again, form the self-protection mudra, rotate it three times clockwise, pointing both upwards and downwards. Only move the mudra, keeping the body still, and recite the dharani seven times, according to your own intention, dividing the distance, and establishing the boundaries of the ten directions. Next, you should close your eyes and contemplate that the true form of Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva is no different from this image. Again, use the self-protection mudra with intention, inviting Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva, and after reciting the dharani twenty-five times, raise the thumb and point it inward once, keeping the index finger as before. Again, form this mudra, recite the dharani three times, and use the lotus flower as a seat. Again, imagine the Bodhisattva coming to sit on this lotus flower, then open your eyes and see the Bodhisattva, generating a rare and precious mind, understanding it as the true form. Recite it three more times, with the mudra as before, saying this thought: 'Now the Bodhisattva has come here, it is the power of the dharani, not what I am capable of. I only wish that the Venerable One would stay here temporarily.' Next, take the scented paste, recite the dharani once, and use it to anoint the altar. Then take the flowers again, also recite it once, and scatter them on the altar. Incense, food, and lamps should be taken in order, each recited once, held in hand as offerings, and placed beside the altar, again thinking: 'All the banners, canopies, pure incense, flowers, and precious objects, born from the blessings and wisdom cultivated by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, are all adorned and beautiful.' Again, form the mudra, recite the dharani once, and imagine as before that all the offerings are accomplished. Then hold them to offer to all Tathagatas (Tathagatas, 'the one who has thus come' is one of the titles of a Buddha) and all Bodhisattvas. Offering in this way with the mind is the most excellent.

English version: If one cannot prepare offerings such as 'turxiang' (a type of incense), then performing the second type of mental offering will also lead to accomplishment. One should use hand mudras to count beads and recite the 'dharani' (mantra), clearly remembering the number of recitations. While reciting, close your eyes and imagine a full moon on the heart of the Bodhisattva, with the 'dharani' syllables appearing in gold within the moon. These syllables then flow out from the moon, pouring onto the practitioner's head, and also flow out from the mouth, entering the Bodhisattva's feet, as if one is personally speaking and reporting at the Bodhisattva's feet. While reciting the 'dharani' without stopping, the imagined syllables circulate back and forth continuously, like a rotating wheel. If the body and mind become weary, one should stop and rest, sincerely gaze upwards, then sit and prostrate. Close your eyes and visualize the full moon Bodhisattva again, with utmost clarity. Then, one should again mentally expand the visualization, gradually increasing it to encompass the entire 'dharmadhatu' (realm of reality), and then gradually reduce the visualization. Finally, when it is the same size as the original, one can end the visualization. Then, perform the previous hand mudra and recite the 'dharani' three times. Raise the thumb and send off the Bodhisattva, thinking: 'May compassion, generosity, and joy be bestowed, and may you descend again for the next Dharma event.' Recite the 'dharani' in this way, according to one's ability, either once a day or twice a day. Each time, from beginning to end, should be like the first day, and the number of recitations should also be like the first time, without increasing or decreasing. The total number should reach one million recitations, which is considered complete, and there is no time limit. However, there should be no interruptions in between. Afterwards, during a solar or lunar eclipse, donate food, drink, and wealth according to one's ability, and make offerings to the Three Jewels. Then, move the Bodhisattva image and the altar to a clean, open-air place. Take one 'liang' (approximately 50 grams) of cow ghee and place it in a cooked copper vessel, and also take seven leaves from a milky tree and a branch, placing them beside the altar. Increase the flowers, incense, and other offerings several times more than usual. The method of offering is the same as before in every detail. After the offering is complete, take the previous leaves and spread them again in the altar, and then place the ghee vessel on the leaves. Also, stir the ghee with the tree branch without stopping, while watching the sun and moon, and also watching the ghee. 《虛空藏菩薩能滿諸愿最勝心陀羅尼求聞持法》 English version: This describes the characteristics of the lower, middle, and upper grades. Whichever of these characteristics is attained, it leads to accomplishment. Upon attaining this characteristic, it becomes a divine medicine. If one consumes this medicine, one will obtain Dharani (retention). Having passed through the ears or eyes, the meaning of the text will be understood completely. It will be remembered in the heart and never forgotten. The other benefits are immeasurable and boundless. Now, let's briefly describe a small portion of the merits. If, upon reaching the stage of regression and completion, these three characteristics cannot be achieved, one should start again from the beginning, even up to seven times. Even if there are extremely heavy sins such as the five Anantariya-karma (matricide, patricide, killing an Arhat, causing disunity in the Sangha, and shedding the blood of a Buddha), they will all be eliminated, and accomplishment will certainly be achieved.
