爾時文殊師利菩薩。在毗盧遮那大會中。從座而起頂禮佛足。白佛言世尊。我今說本五字陀羅尼。若有善男子善女人。才誦一遍者。一切如來所說法義修多羅藏。讀誦受持等彼功德。毗盧遮那佛。告文殊師利言。隨意說之。

爾時文殊師利即說。明曰。

阿啰跛者曩

才說此陀羅尼。一切如來所說法。攝入五字陀羅尼中。能令眾生般若波羅蜜多成就。我今當說曼荼羅法。或十四日十五日。選擇極清凈處作曼茶羅。以瞿摩夷塗地。復以白檀香泥塗之。隨意大小。于曼荼羅中。畫文殊師利五髻童子形狀。身如鬱金色。種種瓔珞莊嚴其身。右手把金剛劍左手把梵夾。坐于月輪中。于月輪四面。周旋書五字陀羅尼。阿阇梨對於此壇。結金剛劍印唸誦。時文殊師利加持此阿阇梨。即得無礙辯才。仍為現身。一一解釋此陀羅尼甚深義理。時阿阇梨即當禮拜出道場外。為弟子受菩薩戒。即以緋帛

T20 No. 1171 Yoga of Manjushri Bodhisattva Dharma from the Vajrasekhara Sutra No. 1171 [cf. No. 1175] A Chapter on the Yoga of Manjushri Bodhisattva Dharma from the Vajrasekhara Sutra (also known as the Five-Syllable Mantra Dharma) Translated by Tripitaka Master Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple, holding the title of Minister of Public Works, Grand Master of the Palace, Acting Director of the Court of State Ceremonial, Duke Su of the State, with a fief of 3,000 households, granted purple robes, posthumously awarded the title of Minister of Works, with the posthumous title 'Dajian' and the honorary title 'Da Guangzhi,' under imperial decree. At that time, Manjushri Bodhisattva, in the assembly of Vairocana, arose from his seat, prostrated at the Buddha's feet, and said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, I will now speak of the fundamental five-syllable dharani. If there are good men or good women who recite it even once, the merit of reading, reciting, receiving, and upholding all the Sutras expounded by all the Tathagatas will be equal to theirs.' Vairocana Buddha said to Manjushri, 'Speak as you wish.' Then, Manjushri immediately spoke, saying: 'A ra pa ca na' Just by speaking this dharani, all the teachings expounded by all the Tathagatas are gathered into this five-syllable dharani. It can enable sentient beings to perfect Prajna Paramita. I will now speak of the mandala method. On the fourteenth or fifteenth day, choose an extremely pure place to create a mandala. Smear the ground with cow dung, and then smear it with white sandalwood paste. The size is up to you. Within the mandala, draw the form of Manjushri as a five-knotted child, with a body like the color of gold. Adorn his body with various ornaments. His right hand holds a vajra sword, and his left hand holds a scripture. He sits in a moon disc. Around the four sides of the moon disc, write the five-syllable dharani. The acharya faces this altar, forms the vajra sword mudra, and recites. At that time, Manjushri will bless this acharya, and he will immediately obtain unobstructed eloquence. He will then appear in person and explain the profound meaning of this dharani in detail. At that time, the acharya should bow and exit the altar, and administer the Bodhisattva vows to his disciples, using scarlet silk.


覆眼。引入壇場門次而立。時阿阇梨告弟子言。汝今獲一切如來般若波羅蜜。自今已后不應向人而說此明。勿令破汝三摩耶法。此陀羅尼極應秘密。阿啰跛者曩者。是滿一切愿義。何以故。

阿字者樂欲菩提義。啰字者深著不捨眾生義。跛字者第一義諦義。者字者妙行義。曩字者無自性義。樂欲菩提不捨眾生。深入第一義諦中行行。修習諸法無有自性。若如是修滿一切愿。此諸愿中證如來位及執金剛。不求當得。

我今又說契印曼茶羅。壇中畫金剛劍。四面各于本方。畫八供養契及四攝契。對於此壇唸誦。不久即當成就。

我今又說三摩耶曼荼羅。壇中書五字及八供養四攝種子字。對此壇唸誦而作是言。阿字門者諸法本不生。日日唸誦。不久一切罪障消滅速得成就。

我今又說羯磨曼荼羅。壇中安般若波羅蜜經卷。日日讀誦唸誦。以種種供養而供養之。不久即當成就。

我今當說畫像法。或白㲲絹素等中。畫文殊師利菩薩。坐月輪中。輪內周旋書五字。四面畫八供養及四攝。如大壇法。對此像前如法念誦而作是言。諸法自性成就。唸誦數滿五十萬遍。即獲無盡辯才。如文殊師利菩薩等無有異。飛騰虛空所求世間出世間事悉得成就。

又唸誦數滿一俱胝。離諸苦惱。滿二俱胝遍。

【English Translation】 English version: Covering the eyes. Entering and standing in order at the gates of the mandala. At that time, the Acharya (teacher) tells the disciple: 'You have now obtained the Prajnaparamita (perfection of wisdom) of all the Tathagatas (thus-gone ones). From now on, you should not speak this mantra (sacred utterance) to others. Do not let it break your Samaya (vow). This Dharani (mnemonic device) should be kept extremely secret. Arapacana means fulfilling all wishes.' Why is that?

'The letter A means the desire for Bodhi (enlightenment). The letter Ra means deeply attached to and not abandoning sentient beings. The letter Pa means the ultimate truth (highest reality). The letter Ca means wonderful conduct (noble actions). The letter Na means no self-nature (emptiness). Desiring Bodhi, not abandoning sentient beings, deeply entering the ultimate truth and practicing, cultivating all dharmas without self-nature. If you cultivate in this way, you will fulfill all wishes. Among these wishes is the attainment of the Tathagata's position and holding the Vajrapani (thunderbolt-bearer). You will obtain them without seeking.'

I will now speak about the Mudrā-mandala (hand-gesture mandala). Draw a Vajra-sword (diamond sword) in the center of the mandala. On each of the four sides, in their respective directions, draw the eight offering mudras (gestures of offering) and the four embracing mudras (gestures of embracing). Recite mantras facing this mandala, and you will soon achieve accomplishment.

I will now speak about the Samaya-mandala (vow mandala). In the center of the mandala, write the five letters and the seed syllables (bīja) of the eight offerings and four embracings. Recite mantras facing this mandala and say: 'The letter A is the gate of the non-origination of all dharmas.' Recite it daily, and soon all karmic obstacles will be eliminated, and you will quickly attain accomplishment.

I will now speak about the Karma-mandala (action mandala). Place a Prajnaparamita Sutra (perfection of wisdom scripture) scroll in the center of the mandala. Read and recite it daily, and make offerings to it with various offerings. You will soon achieve accomplishment.

I will now speak about the method of drawing an image. On white felt (a type of wool fabric), silk, or other materials, draw Manjushri Bodhisattva (gentle glory bodhisattva) sitting in a moon disc. Write the five letters around the inside of the disc. On the four sides, draw the eight offerings and the four embracings, like the method of the great mandala. Facing this image, recite mantras according to the Dharma and say: 'The self-nature of all dharmas is accomplished.' Recite it five hundred thousand times, and you will obtain endless eloquence, like Manjushri Bodhisattva without any difference. Flying through the sky, all worldly and other-worldly affairs that you seek will be accomplished.

Furthermore, reciting it one koti (ten million) times will free you from all suffering. Reciting it two koti times,


五無間等一切罪障永盡無餘。三俱胝遍。證悟一切諸三昧門。四俱胝遍獲大聞持。五俱胝遍成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。

又法于舍利塔四面。周旋右轉書五字陀羅尼。繞塔行道唸誦勿令斷絕。滿五落叉遍。

爾時如來及文殊師利執金剛等。于虛空中而現其身仍為說法。

歸命童真妙吉祥  我依瑜伽說唸誦  身口意業金剛念  如來甚深三密門  行者應發普賢心  從師應受金剛戒  不顧身命起慈悲  方可堪入解脫輪  應從師受三么耶  契印密語如經說  敬阿阇梨如佛想  于同學所殷重心  或於山間阿蘭若  流泉浴池悅意樹  山峰石窟迥樹邊  建立壇場如本法  莊嚴精室置本尊  隨力供養一心住  遍觀十方諸佛海  供養禮諸如來足  為成三業金剛故  當於二手舌心中  應想五智金剛杵  由此加持皆悉地  次應結契名警覺  二手皆作金剛拳  檀慧相鉤豎進力  二度側拄成覺悟

接下來敬禮觀自在王尊(Avalokiteśvara,觀自在菩薩),捨棄自身以祈求三摩地(Samadhi,禪定)。 雙手結金剛合掌置於頭頂之上,以口著地,虔誠禮拜。

捨身求請三昧真言曰:

唵薩嚩怛他(引)蘗多(一切如來)布惹(供養)缽啰(二合)靺多囊(引)答么(二合)南涅哩夜(二合)多夜彌(我將自己奉獻)薩嚩怛他(引)蘗多(一切如來)嚩日啰(金剛)達么(佛法)缽啰(二合)靺多野(傳播)𤚥(觀想口為紅色)。

接下來敬禮不空成就尊(Amoghasiddhi,不空成就佛),捨棄自身以祈求善巧智。 雙手結金剛合掌安於心前,以頭頂著地,稽首禮拜。

捨身求請方便真言曰:

唵薩嚩怛他蘗多(一切如來)布惹(供養)羯么抳(事業)阿答么(二合)南涅哩夜(二合)多夜彌(我將自己奉獻)薩嚩怛他蘗多(一切如來)嚩日啰(金剛)羯么(事業)句嚕(做)𤚥(觀想頭頂為綠色)。

接下來再次敬禮十方諸佛,觀想自身遍在於諸佛面前。 觀想五輪(雙掌、雙膝、額頭)著地禮拜,應當結金剛三摩耶(Vajrasamaya,金剛三昧耶)。

遍禮十方真言曰:

【English Translation】 English version Ta nang ya da ma nam nie li ye duo ya mi (I dedicate myself) Sa wa ta ta ga duo (all Tathagatas) wa ri la sa da wa (Vajrasattva) di se cha (bless) suo wa (Hum, visualize the Hum syllable as blue).

Next, one should respectfully prostrate to Ratnasambhava (寶生尊, the Jewel-Born One), sacrificing oneself to seek the position of initiation. Form the Vajra-clasped hands at the heart, and prostrate with the forehead touching the ground, reverently.

The true mantra for sacrificing oneself to request initiation says:

Om Sa wa ta ta ga duo (all Tathagatas) bu re (offering) bi sai ga (initiation) ya da ma nam nie li ye duo ya mi (I dedicate myself) Sa wa ta ta (all Tathagatas) wa ri la (Vajra) ra da na (jewel) bi xin za (initiate) Hum (visualize the forehead as yellow).

Next, prostrate to Avalokiteśvara (觀自在王尊, the King of Free Observation), sacrificing oneself to seek Samadhi (三么地, concentration). Place the Vajra-clasped hands on top of the head, and prostrate with the mouth touching the ground, reverently.

The true mantra for sacrificing oneself to request Samadhi says:

Om Sa wa ta ta ga duo (all Tathagatas) bu re (offering) bo la mo duo nang da ma nam nie li ye duo ya mi (I dedicate myself) Sa wa ta ta ga duo (all Tathagatas) wa ri la (Vajra) da mo (Dharma) bo la mo duo ye Hum (visualize the mouth as red).

Next, prostrate to Amoghasiddhi (不空成就尊, the Infallible Accomplisher), sacrificing oneself to seek skillful wisdom. Place the Vajra-clasped hands at the heart, and prostrate with the crown of the head touching the ground, bowing respectfully.

The true mantra for sacrificing oneself to request expedient means says:

Om Sa wa ta ta ga duo (all Tathagatas) bu re (offering) ga ma ni (karma) a da ma nam nie li ye duo ya mi (I dedicate myself) Sa wa ta ta ga duo (all Tathagatas) wa ri la (Vajra) ga ma (karma) gu lu (do) Hum (visualize the crown of the head as green).

Next, again respectfully prostrate to the Buddhas of the ten directions, visualizing oneself pervading before all the Buddhas. Visualize the five wheels (both palms, both knees, and forehead) touching the ground in prostration, and one should form the Vajrasamaya (金剛三么耶, Vajra Samaya).

The true mantra for prostrating everywhere in the ten directions says:


唵薩嚩怛他(引)蘗多迦耶弭嚩(引)枳質(二合)多嚩日啰(二合)缽啰(二合)弩梅嚩日啰(二合)滿娜南迦嚕弭唵嚩日啰(二合)勿(微吉反)

次誦成就妙真言  所有眾生求勝事  愿諸如來悉加持  速令成就無上道

成熟一切眾生真言曰。

唵薩嚩怛他(去引)蘗多餉悉鐸(當各反)薩嚩薩怛嚩(二合)南薩嚩悉馱藥三缽睍擔怛他(引)蘗多室者(二合)地底(丁以反)瑟姹(二合)擔

次當結跏端身坐  凈除三業令清凈  諸法本性清凈故  令我此身凈無垢

凈三業真言曰。

【English Translation】 English version Om Sarva Tathagata Kaya Vakk Citta Vajra Pranu Me Vajra Mandana Karomi Om Vajra Vut Next, recite the mantra of perfect accomplishment. For all beings seeking supreme matters, may all Tathagatas bless them, quickly enabling them to achieve the unsurpassed path. The mantra for maturing all beings is: Om Sarva Tathagata Sham Siddha Sarva Sattvanam Sarva Siddhaya Sam Padam Tathagata Sthiti Sthanam Next, one should sit in the lotus position, with the body upright, purifying the three karmas of body, speech, and mind, making them pure. Because the nature of all dharmas is pure, may this body of mine be pure and without defilement. The mantra for purifying the three karmas is: Om Svabhava Shuddha Sarva Dharma Svabhava Shuddho Ham Next, with the vajra palms together, the ten fingers crossed initially, recite this mantra: Om Vajra Jali Deeply crossing all the fingers, making a fist, forming the vajra bond, recite this mantra: Om Vajra Bandha Next, one should open the heart and enter the wisdom of the Buddha. One should visualize two syllables between the two breasts, the syllables 'Tra' and 'Ta', both white in color. Visualize these syllables as two door panels. The two hands should form the vajra bond mudra, and clap three times at the heart to open the doors. Next, one should form the Delight Samadhi Mudra, with Meditation and Wisdom as the moon, firmly bound. The Endurance and Wish degrees are interlocked in the middle, and the Generosity and Wisdom, Meditation and Wisdom are erected and touching each other.

The practitioner should practice the Asafpana-yoga. One who practices this method should not move any part of the body, stop the inhalation and exhalation of breath, making it very subtle and not allowing it to be scattered. Then one should contemplate emptiness.

After prostrating, he carefully observes his original mind and reports to the Buddhas, saying: 'The mind's appearance has no substance, how can it be cultivated and realized?' The Buddhas tell the practitioner: 'Good man, observe the moon disc in your heart, as if in a light mist.' Then recite the radiant Bodhi mantra. Carefully contemplate the heart-moon mantra, saying: 'Om citta-prati-vedam karomi' The practitioner should clearly and carefully contemplate. 【English Translation】 English version Holding the wisdom sword in hand. The left hand holds a blue lotus flower, on which is a scripture clip of the 'Prajnaparamita Sutra' (般若波羅蜜經). The body color is like turmeric. Recite 'A ra pa ca na' (阿啰跛者曩) once in the heart.

Next, form the Vajra Wisdom Sword Mudra (金剛智劍印): cross the middle finger (止) and ring finger (觀) to form a full moon shape, and erect the index finger (忍) and little finger (愿) like the shape of a sword. Stamp this mudra on the heart, forehead, throat, and top of the head, and immediately form a firm protective deity.

The mantra says:

'Om Vajra (二合) Tikshna (三合) Dhistha (二合) Svaha (二合) Hum'

Next, perform the Abhisheka (灌頂), form the Jewel Mudra (寶印): cross both hands to form a moon shape, bend the index finger (進) and middle finger (力) backward into the shape of a jewel, and touch the second joints of the thumbs (禪) and index fingers (智) together. Next, present the Vajra clapping ritual: Clap both hands together once, representing mutual striking. By presenting the mudra and mantra of clapping, it can cause the holy assembly to generate joy and quickly obtain the solid body of the principal deity.

The mantra of joy says:

Oṃ Vajra Tīkṣṇa Tuṣya Hūṃ

Next, the practitioner should visualize an eight-petaled lotus flower with stamens and pistils in front of the seat. Above the lotus, visualize a lion's Mount Meru seat, and above the seat, there is a seven-jeweled pavilion. In the center, visualize the Seven-Jeweled Lotus King, and above it, visualize the syllable 'Tāṃ' with majestic light, universally illuminating the Dharma realm without exception. This syllable transforms into Vajra, clearly visualizing its original form, and inviting the Bodhisattva into the visualized body. Make the shape of the moon with both hands, extending forward like a hook, and visualize the body as being the same as that Bodhisattva.

The mantra of Vajra Hook Bodhisattva says:

Oṃ Ākhiḥ Hūṃ

Next, one should bind the rope and enter the body of the deity, forming the shape of the moon, pressing the wisdom hand gesture with the meditation hand gesture into the palm. Due to the blessing of this secret mudra, (the practitioner and the deity) become one, without difference.

The mantra of Vajra Rope says:

Oṃ Ākhiḥ Hūṃ Hūṃ

Next, one should bind the lock mudra to make it firm, forming the shape of the moon, encircling four times. Due to the power of this secret mudra, everything is made firm and unchangeable.

The mantra of Vajra Lock says:

Oṃ Kṣepa Sphoṭa Vaṃ

Next, bind the bell mudra to make it joyful, using the meditation and wisdom hand gestures, with eight fingers like a bell. Cause the deity and the assembly to rejoice, blessing them to quickly achieve wonderful accomplishment.

Next, form the Vajra Lamp Illumination Mudra: Make the shape of the moon with both hands, with the tips of the Jnana and Dhyana fingers touching. By forming the Vajra Lamp Illumination Mudra, one will attain the Upaya Paramita (Perfection of Skillful Means).

The Vajra Lamp Illumination Mantra says:

Om Suti Jya Garim (Om suti jya garim)

Next, form the Vajra Anointing Mudra: Make the shape of the moon with both hands and scatter them in front of the chest, like anointing with incense. By the power of the Anointing Mudra, one can quickly fulfill the Pranidhana Paramita (Perfection of Vows).

The Vajra Anointing Mantra says:

Om Sukentamgini (Om sukentamgini)

The practitioner should then recite the one hundred and eight names in praise, offering them to the principal deity. Then form the Vajra Sword Mudra and recite the Hundred Syllable Mantra over the heart, empowering oneself. Even if one has committed various evil deeds in past lives, including the five heinous crimes, all karmic obscurations will be eliminated by the power of this Hundred Syllable Mantra, and one will attain the Surangama Samadhi (Heroic March Samadhi) in this very life. If the mind is scattered, one can recite this mantra repeatedly, or for one seven, three sevens, or even seven sevens, one hundred and eight times. The mind will then be free from clinging and quickly attain Samadhi (Concentration).

若有智者依此法  晝夜四時精進修  見世證得歡喜地

Without dissolving the previous mudra (hand gesture), contemplate carefully the principal deity in front, and visualize yourself as being no different from the principal deity. After clearly contemplating, recite the five-syllable dharani (mantra). It can be recited in Vajra (diamond) speech, or in clear lotus speech. Or recite it seven times, or three times seven times. Dissolve the mudra on the crown of the head. Then take the rosary and recite it in front of the heart, neither fast nor slow. Either one hundred and eight times, or one thousand times, or even ten thousand times. After finishing the recitation, hold the rosary with both hands and place it on the crown of the head, then put it back in its place. If it is Samadhi (meditative absorption) recitation, one should visualize the Mahadarsha-jnana (Great Perfect Mirror Wisdom) in the heart, in which the five-syllable gate is arranged. Contemplate clearly, according to the meaning, the mind is united with Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom). This is called Samadhi recitation. If the body is tired and lazy, then form the principal deity's sword mudra, and recite the five-syllable dharani seven times. Then make offerings to all the Buddhas with the eight great offerings, and praise them with beautiful words. Offer Arghya (water offering), and dissolve the boundary by rotating the Trailokyavijaya-mudra (Conqueror of the Three Worlds mudra) to the left. Then form the Vajrakhadga-mudra (Diamond Sword mudra), and send the holy beings back to their respective palaces. The mantra is:

Om kri tu va sarvasattva ratha siddhi-data yatha anuga garja-jvalam Buddha-vishayam puna-ra ga manang tadu Om khadga-sattva mu.

After performing this ritual, again use the Samaya-mudra (Vow mudra) to recite the empowerment mantra, and use the mudra to mark the four places, then perform the abhiseka (initiation), and wear the Vajra-kavacha (Diamond Armor). Manjushri Wrathful Dharani:

Oṃ vajra-tikshna-kuru-dhā chinda chinda hūṃ phat

Use this mantra to protect the body, ward off evil, and establish boundaries. Purify all incense, flowers, and all offerings, and receive blessings.

May all beings encounter this teaching, with Manju always as a virtuous friend. Quickly realize the skillful wisdom of Prajna, swiftly become the unsurpassed two-legged venerable one (Buddha).
