The Dharani Sutra of Manjushri's Dharma-Treasure
Translated by Bodhiruci of the Great Tang Dynasty from South India
Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World Honored One) was in the Pure Abode Heaven Palace. With a great assembly of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas (Mahasattva, Great Bodhisattvas), and countless Pure Abode celestial beings, they surrounded, made offerings, respectfully honored, praised, and gazed upon the Tathagata. At that time, the World Honored One, in the midst of the assembly, was expounding the immeasurable and wonderful Dharma of Dharani for the great assembly. Furthermore, for the benefit of beings with little merit in the future world, he entered a Samadhi called 'Emanating Light.' From the crown of his head, he emitted immeasurable and various kinds of light. The light circled and illuminated immeasurable and boundless Buddha worlds. After illuminating, it returned and encircled the Manjushri Kumara (Manjushri Bodhisattva as a youth), and then entered his crown. After the light entered from the crown, Manjushri immediately entered a Samadhi called 'Dharani自在王(Dharani Self-Mastery King).' Entering this Samadhi, he emitted immeasurable and various colors and forms of light from his mouth. After the light was emitted, it entered the crown of the Vajra Guhyapati (Vajrapani) Bodhisattva. At that time, the Vajra Guhyapati Bodhisattva rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, faced the Buddha. He respectfully prostrated, gazed upon the honored countenance, and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, in the past you said to me, after my Dharma declines, during the evil age in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the continent where we live), Manjushri will extensively benefit countless beings and perform Buddha deeds. I wish that the World Honored One would explain in detail where he will reside and in what direction he will go to perform these benefits. Out of compassion and protection for all beings, I wish you would explain this.'
At that time, the World Honored One said to the Vajra Guhyapati Bodhisattva: 'Good man, you are able to ask me on behalf of all sentient beings. Excellent, excellent! Now listen attentively, listen attentively, and contemplate well. I will now explain this to you in detail.' At that time, the Vajra Guhyapati Bodhisattva, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and leaped with joy. He arranged his robes and listened with one mind.
At that time, the World Honored One further said.
剛密跡主菩薩言。我滅度後於此贍部洲東北方。有國名大振那。其國中有山號曰五頂。文殊師利童子游行居住。為諸眾生於中說法。及有無量諸天龍神夜叉羅剎緊那羅摩睺羅伽人非人等。圍繞供養恭敬。於是世尊復告金剛密跡主言。是文殊師利童子。有如是等無量威德。神通變化自在裝嚴。廣能饒益一切有情。成就圓滿福德之力不可思議。復告金剛密跡主言。文殊師利有陀羅尼最勝極秘密心真言。並畫像及漫拏羅印法。於後末世佛法滅時惡法增長。諸災興起如此之時。于當來世贍部洲中。薄福少智諸眾生輩惡業增長。五行失序陰陽交錯。風雨不調惡星變怪。天人修羅鬥戰竟起。天人減少修羅增長。種種諸災。如此之時流行於世。惡鬼下降變為女形。與諸眾生作種種病。所謂喉閉疔瘡疥癩腹痛。瘧病或一日二日三日四日。乃至七日一發。或患風黃痰病或三病俱起。頭痛瘡腫眼痛。大小便痢諸雜等病。其惡鬼神或變身。為蟲狼虎豹師子之身種種諸獸。於世間中攝諸眾生。啖諸精氣威失力衰。如此之時贍部洲中。無量眾生橫遭枉死。縱有諸醫不能救療。如此世時一日之間有三十尾末啰數。是故金剛我今令汝轉與眾生。說此陀羅尼法使展轉受持。何以故此贍部洲所有眾生。常發菩提大善願心。我輩何日能得離此煩惱苦海無明愛

Those evil ghosts and spirits may transform into insects, wolves, tigers, leopards, lions, and various other beasts, capturing sentient beings in the world, devouring their essence, causing them to lose their power and weaken. At that time, countless sentient beings in Jambudvipa will suffer wrongful deaths, and even doctors will be unable to cure them. In such times, there will be thirty maras (demons) appearing in a single day. Therefore, Vajra, I now instruct you to transmit this Dharani Dharma to sentient beings, so that they may receive and uphold it. Why? Because all sentient beings in this Jambudvipa constantly generate great Bodhi (enlightenment) vows, wondering when we can escape from this sea of suffering and ignorance?'

【English Translation】 English version: Therefore, I command you to constantly teach and widely disseminate this, causing sentient beings to generate true faith in the Buddha's stupas and the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), cultivate virtuous deeds, refrain from unlawful actions, be filial to parents, respect teachers and elders, and generate admiration for the virtuous and wise. Constantly offer flowers, incense, and various delicious foods, with reverence, respect, praise, and chant this most supreme Dharani. For seven days and seven nights, each day observe the Eight Precepts. These Dharanis must also be recited. At that time, the Tathagata, with great compassion and pity, then spoke the Broad, Profound Wisdom, Thunderous Sound King Tathagata Dharani, which is as follows: 『Namo vipula-buddhi gambhira-nirghosha rajaya tathagataya. Next, the Dhāraṇī of Candraprabha-kumāra-bhūta (Moonlight Youth) is spoken. Namaḥ candraprabhāya kumārabhūtāya tadyathā: Prabhe prabhāvati dharma-viśuddhi bhavatu me svāhā. At that time, the Buddha told Vajrapāṇi (Vajra-holding) Bodhisattva: 'If there are good men and good women who recite this Dhāraṇī of the Eighteen Devas for seven days and seven nights, all the sins of that person's past, present, and three karmas, and even all obstacles, will be eliminated, and their body and mind will be purified. All worldly wind and yellow diseases, and all other illnesses, will be cured. 【English Translation】 English version: Diligent transformation through the ten wholesome deeds. If a king practices the ten wholesome deeds, everything the king does will be perfect. This Eight-Syllable Great Awesome Virtue Dharani is spoken by countless hundreds of thousands of Ganges River sands of Buddhas in the past, to protect all kings who practice the ten wholesome deeds, enabling them to obtain wish fulfillment, longevity, and incomparably superior blessings and rewards. All warfare will cease, the country will be peaceful, and all possessions of the king will constantly increase. This Dharani can benefit and have compassion for all sentient beings, can cut off the three evil paths, and can accomplish all peaceful dharmas, just as if the Buddha were present in the world. This is the body of Manjushri Bodhisattva, who manifests this form as a mantra deity for the benefit of sentient beings, capable of fulfilling all desires and intentions. If a person can temporarily hear and remember this Dharani, they can eradicate sins such as the four grave offenses and the five rebellious acts, how much more so if they constantly recite it. At that time, after the World Honored One spoke these words, Vajra Bodhisattva again said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, which is the Eight-Syllable Great Awesome Virtue Dharani that the Tathagata spoke of just now? May you please explain it.' At that time, the World Honored One told Vajra Secret Trace Holder Bodhisattva: 'Now listen carefully, listen carefully, I will explain it to you. 【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:我現在簡略地讚歎這個陀羅尼的一小部分功德。如果我要詳細地說,即使經過無量俱胝那庾多百千大劫也說不完。金剛密跡主(Vajrapani,護法神),這個陀羅尼如果男子女人不能完全按照儀軌承事供養,即使在家中被各種家務所迫,只要能夠記住而不忘記,按時念誦,隨自己的能力多少進行供養,也能得到成就。但是,不包括那些不至誠、沒有正信、不發大乘菩提之心、誹謗三寶、生起不善心、做各種惡業的人。這些人即使是小法都不能成就,更何況是大法呢? 這時,佛告訴金剛密跡主(Vajrapani,護法神)說:『如果有善男子、善女人,能夠唸誦這個陀羅尼一遍,就能自我保護;唸誦兩遍,就能保護同伴;唸誦三遍,就能得到大力的擁護,即使是住在十地(Dashabhumika,菩薩修行的十個階段)的菩薩也不能超越過去,更何況是各種小類的眾生。如果唸誦四遍,就能擁護全家大小;唸誦五遍,就能擁護一切眷屬;唸誦六遍,就能擁護一切城邑村坊等;唸誦七遍,就能擁護一切眾生。如果想要穿衣服時,應當加持七遍,能夠消除一切惡毒以及各種災難。如果洗手洗臉時,應當加持水七遍,能夠使眾人生起尊重仰慕之心,所有各種惡鬼神見到都會降伏,一切人都會敬重,降伏他們的噁心,生起歡喜心。如果有人患身體支節疼痛,加持熱水一百零八遍,洗浴就能痊癒。如果每天早起用一掬水加持七遍喝下去,在身上所有的正報(karmic retribution,由善惡業產生的果報)都能消滅,更何況是沒有災厄的人。以及各種三業(身、口、意)也能消蕩,並且能夠壽命長遠。如果加持飲食七遍吃下去,一切毒都不能造成傷害。如果見到惡人以及見到怨家,應當唸誦這個真言,所有怨家生起噁心,應當自我降伏,消除瞋恨心,以慈悲心相對待。有恐怖的地方,應當至心念誦這個真言,就能消除恐怖。』
【English Translation】 English version: I will now briefly praise a small portion of the merits of this Dharani. If I were to describe it in detail, it would be inexhaustible even after countless kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of great kalpas. Vajrapani (guardian deity), if men and women are unable to fully perform the rituals of service and offerings for this Dharani, even if they are constrained by various household affairs at home, as long as they can remember it without forgetting, recite it regularly, and make offerings according to their ability, whether much or little, they can also attain accomplishment. However, this does not include those who are not sincere, do not have right faith, do not generate the Bodhi mind of the Mahayana, slander the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), generate unwholesome thoughts, and commit various evil deeds. Even minor practices will not be accomplished by these people, let alone the great Dharma. At that time, the Buddha told Vajrapani (guardian deity): 'If there are good men and good women who can recite this Dharani once, they can protect themselves; reciting it twice can protect their companions; reciting it three times can obtain great protection, even Bodhisattvas dwelling in the Tenth Ground (Dashabhumika, the ten stages of a Bodhisattva's practice) cannot surpass it, let alone various small beings. If recited four times, it can protect the entire household; reciting it five times can protect all relatives; reciting it six times can protect all cities, towns, and villages; reciting it seven times can protect all sentient beings. If one wishes to wear clothing, one should bless it seven times, which can eliminate all evil poisons and various calamities. If one washes hands and face, one should bless the water seven times, which can cause people to generate respect and admiration, and all kinds of evil ghosts and spirits will be subdued upon seeing it, and all people will respect them, subduing their evil minds and generating joyful minds. If someone suffers from pain in their body and limbs, bless warm water one hundred and eight times, and bathing in it will bring healing. If one takes a handful of water every morning, blesses it seven times, and drinks it, all the karmic retributions (karmic retribution, the consequences of good and bad deeds) on the body will be eliminated, let alone those without calamities. And the three karmas (body, speech, and mind) will also be purified, and one will attain longevity. If one blesses food and drink seven times before eating, all poisons will be unable to cause harm. If one sees evil people or enemies, one should recite this mantra, and if any enemies generate evil thoughts, they should be subdued, eliminating hatred and treating each other with compassion. In places of fear, one should sincerely recite this mantra, and fear will be eliminated.'

【English Translation】 English version Recite this mantra (zhēn yán) one hundred and eight times before sleeping, and you will have good dreams and know good and evil things. If someone is suffering from various malarial diseases, the person reciting the mantra should look at the face of the person suffering from malaria and sincerely recite the eight-syllable mantra one thousand eight hundred times, and they will be cured. If you want to enter the battlefield, you should write this mantra on paper with bezoar and carry it on your body. All knives, staffs, bows, arrows, spears, and axes will not be able to cause harm. If you enter the battlefield, draw an image of Manjushri (Wénshūshīlì) Bodhisattva as a child and the mantra, and place it on an elephant's back to lead the army. The various rebel armies will not be able to cause harm and will naturally retreat. The image should be made to look like a child riding a golden peacock. All the rebels who see it will retreat. If you recite it regularly, all sins such as the five rebellious acts (wǔ nì) and the four serious offenses (sì chóng) will be eliminated, and you will often be able to see Manjushri Bodhisattva in person. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, you must recite and remember it without forgetting. Recite it one hundred and eight times each time without interruption, and you will always be able to gain the allegiance of all sentient beings. If you bless your hair bun seven times, all sentient beings who see it will be subdued, and evil people will retreat. If you can recite it three times a day, one hundred and eight times each time, what you do will be satisfactory, what you seek will be as you wish, and all your wishes will be fulfilled. Everything will be complete and perfect, and you will gain great wealth and freedom in your actions. When you are about to die, you will attain the Samantamukha Samadhi (pǔ mén sān mèi) and be able to see Manjushri Bodhisattva in person. At this time, the Buddha told Vajrapani (Jīngāng Mìjīzhǔ) Bodhisattva, 'Good man, if a king, prince, queen, princess, or any official or noble is able to write this Manjushri Dharani (Wénshūshīlì tuóluóní) in their home, they will gain great wealth and all disasters will be eliminated. All the wishes they seek will be fulfilled, and they will always be protected by good deities, preventing ghosts and demons from disturbing them.' At this time, the Buddha again told Vajrapani, 'This secret Dharani is inconceivable, and the majestic power of all Buddhas is also inconceivable.' At this time, Sakyamuni (Shìjiāmóuní) Tathagata again told Vajrapani, 'This eight-syllable secret majestic great Dharani also has a method of making images to benefit all, which I will tell to the kings who practice the ten virtues (shí shàn). If there are good men and good women who hold this Dharani, they will be able to obtain great protection with little effort.'
復能擁護諸王子妃後宮人婇女百寮輔相。及諸士女並之國士。一切人民所有田宅。如此之類悉皆安樂。凡此畫像若有人但能所在處安置者。于中有王賊水火刀兵劫賊。及諸災難並得除息。乃至非時疫病旱澇不調。蟲霜損害咸當除滅。常得依時龍王降雨苗稼豐熟。國人康悅無諸災難。
爾時金剛密跡主菩薩摩訶薩。白佛言世尊。曏者所說廣大畫像等法。當云何作唯愿說之。爾時世尊告言。善男子凡欲畫像。先覓上妙細白疊。次須簡擇日月吉宿良曜太白直次。刻分吉祥時善。然後畫像。于清凈處以香湯掃灑。取衢摩夷而涂其地。懸諸幡蓋燒龍腦等香珍饌供養。其疊須闊八肘長十二肘。先於中畫釋迦牟尼佛。坐七寶蓮華座如說法勢。于佛右邊畫文殊師利。如童子相貌頂戴寶冠。項著瓔珞種種莊嚴。身如鬱金色面貌熙怡瞻仰如來。次右邊畫觀自在菩薩。次畫普賢菩薩。虛空藏菩薩。無盡意菩薩。次於釋迦牟尼如來左邊。畫彌勒菩薩。次畫無垢稱菩薩。次畫除一切障菩薩。次畫月光童子。次畫金剛藏菩薩。已上菩薩等。各於七寶蓮華座上。皆須畫本形。乃至手執。並依本法畫之。勿使漏脫。復于釋迦如來上。畫七佛。所謂廣大智甚深雷音王如來。除一切障如來。阿彌陀如來。功德處如來。普香如來。難勝勇雷音行如來。心

Wherever this portrait is placed, if there are royal rebellions, thieves, floods, fires, wars, robberies, and various disasters, they can be eliminated and pacified. Even untimely epidemics, droughts, floods, insect pests, and frosts should be eliminated. It can always bring timely rain from the Dragon King, making crops abundant and ripe, and the country and people healthy and happy, without any disasters.
At that time, Vajrapani (Vajrapani, a Buddhist protector deity), the Lord of Secret Traces, said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, how should the vast portrait and other methods just mentioned be made?' The World Honored One told him: 'Good man, whenever you want to make a portrait, first find the finest and purest white silk cloth. Secondly, choose auspicious days, months, stars, and auspicious times when Venus is in the right position. Carefully select auspicious and good moments, and then start painting. In a clean place, sprinkle fragrant water and sweep, smear the ground with cow dung. Hang various banners and canopies, burn dragon brain incense and other precious incense, and offer precious food. The width of this silk cloth should be eight cubits, and the length should be twelve cubits. First, draw Sakyamuni Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha) in the middle, sitting on a seven-jeweled lotus throne, making the teaching mudra. 【English Translation】 English version All sentient beings in evil realms, Who do not believe in the Three Jewels (San Bao), constantly engage in breaking precepts, Slander the Buddhadharma, and fear no sins, Fall into the cycle of birth and death, dwelling in the dark Naraka (Nili, hell), Through immeasurable kalpas, revolving and suffering all kinds of pain, If they encounter this image, generate Bodhicitta (Puti Xin, the mind of enlightenment), Joyfully gaze upon it briefly, or even for a short moment, With minds undistracted, wholeheartedly looking up with reverence, These beings who commit evil deeds, all their sins will be extinguished, Obtain immeasurable blessings, how much more so those who perform good deeds? Able to cultivate pure fruition, and also possess wonderful features, Endowed with the practice of a Bodhisattva (Pusa), for the sake of vast sentient beings, Diligently advance with virtuous conduct, generating respect with reverence. All Buddhas (Fo) of the past, and those of the present and future, Able to make extensive offerings wholeheartedly for countless kalpas, Those who recite this Dharani (Tuoluoni, mantra), and those who venerate the image, The karmic rewards they obtain, their blessings are indescribable. All the sands in the Ganges River, one should know their number, But the power of these merits, their number cannot be known. Those Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, Sravakas (Shengwen) and Pratyekabuddhas (Yuanjue), And the multitude of Bodhisattvas, the wise and holy, and the Eight Classes of beings (Babu), Diligently making offerings for many kalpas, if one sees this image, Their merit surpasses that of making offerings to them. If one upholds this Sutra, Or reverently bows, encourages and praises those who make offerings, And encourages others, even generating joy in their merit, Always without forgetting these, this person, regarding all Dharmas, And all Dharanis, will definitely achieve success. Even worldly mantras, and the methods of other divisions, If before this image, one's mind is single and without different thoughts, Gazing upon the image and generating reverence, all Siddhi (Xidi, accomplishment) is without doubt.
At that time, the World Honored One (Shizun) further told Vajra Guhyapati (Jingang Miji Zhu): 'In this Eight-Character Great Powerful Dharani Dharma, there is a secret, most supreme, inconceivable mandala, which is the most excellent among all Dharmas. If there are good men and good women who can uphold, recite, write, and practice according to the Dharma, they will achieve all auspiciousness in this life, and all matters will be fulfilled as desired.'

At that time, Vajra Guhyapati Bodhisattva (金剛密跡主菩薩) said to the Buddha again: 'World Honored One, what was previously said about the secret mandala (漫拏羅) practice within this Dharma, how is it done specifically? May the Tathagata (如來) explain in detail for me and for future sentient beings, the method of cultivating according to this, to escape from worldly afflictions.' Then, the World Honored One told Vajra Guhyapati Bodhisattva (金剛密跡主菩薩): 'Excellent, excellent, good man. Now listen carefully, and I will explain it to you. If there are good men and good women, etc., with respectful hearts, who wish to practice this mandala (漫拏羅) method, they must first select a particularly pure and auspicious place for accomplishment. They should dig deep into the ground there, removing tiles, gravel, sand, thorns, hair, ashes, and all kinds of impure and unclean things. Then they can measure the land, making it eight cubits or four cubits in size. Take good, clean soil, firmly compact it to make it level. Take cow dung, incense, etc., and prepare it according to the ritual. If one desires to obtain a horse, it should be performed in the horse stable. If one is bitten by a poisonous snake, it should be performed by a large pond or where dragons are known to dwell. If one suffers from malaria, for one day, two days, three days, up to seven days, it should be performed near the south side of the village residence. If one is possessed by ghosts or Rakshasa (demon), it should be performed in an empty room or near a charnel ground. If one is possessed by Pishacha (flesh-eating demon), it should be performed under a castor oil plant. If one is possessed by all ghosts and evil spirits, it should be performed in a room with a dead person or in a room with a newborn child. If one is harmed by various poisons, one should recite this eight-syllable mantra, bless the water seven times, and drink it; the poison will be immediately removed. 爾時世尊告金剛密跡主言。凡欲作印。先須凈水洗手。用白檀鬱金龍腦沆水及諸上妙好香。石上以水磨之相和。以涂其手揩令入肉香潔。然即廣發其愿頂禮諸佛(而作是言)。

This great secret Dharma (teachings), is spoken for the king who believes in the Buddha Dharma, For those who govern with equality and fairness, it should be widely proclaimed to them. If there are wicked people without faith, even if you give them treasures, Whose value is equivalent to a great chiliocosm (a universe of universes), or three thousand great chiliocosms, With all the treasures within them, it should not be spoken to them.
At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha, again told Vajra Secret Lord Bodhisattva: 'This eight-character Dharani (mantra) seal is named Great Perseverance, it can quickly fulfill all wishes and joys, it can increase all auspiciousness, and accomplish everything.' Vajra Secret Lord Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, what is this seal like? May the Tathagata (Buddha) explain it for me.'
At that time, the World Honored One told Vajra Secret Lord Bodhisattva: 'Whenever you want to form a seal, you must first wash your hands with clean water, use white sandalwood, turmeric, borneol camphor water, and various superior and wonderful fragrances. Grind them with water on a stone, mix them together, and use them to anoint your hands, rubbing them so that the fragrance penetrates into the flesh, making your hands clean and fragrant. Then, broadly make vows, and prostrate to all the Buddhas (and say these words):'

若誦此真言及結其印。能廣作一切事業。若欲莊嚴身上著衣之時。加持衣七遍著之。即得護身常得眾人恭敬。若欲入陣戰鬥之時。所有器仗並皆加持一千八遍。隨身將入即得降伏。其賊自然退散。若欲降伏一切怨敵。以真言加持衣著之即得降伏。又法取珠珍或靺羯或金銀或諸雜寶。以加持一百八遍。刻作童子形安置幢上或安身上或於馬上。將入軍陣三軍前行。彼賊遙見自然降伏。如是等法無量無邊不可稱數。其二印者當須依教清潔持用。得長命報能除一切病。破一切魔及頻那夜迦。及諸惡人亦不能作諸障難。常得一切聖眾咒神現前。所求意願疾得悉地。常得一切諸佛菩薩。與文殊師利童子。冥加護助相逐作伴。乃至不退轉地速

【English Translation】 English version: These Buddhas possess the greatest and most extraordinary qualities, and all the countless Buddhas should be venerated. After completing the recitation, one should form the Great Diligence Mudra (hand gesture). This mudra involves joining both hands with the eight fingers crossed in reverse, all within the palms. The two thumbs are slightly bent and joined together, pressing down on the two index fingers. This is called the Great Diligence Mudra. This mudra is taught by all the Buddhas. Its mantra consists of eight syllables. Next, the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Mudra is described. With both hands joined and crossed, raise the two index fingers, slightly bent, with their tips touching. Place the two thumbs inside the palms, crossed with the right thumb over the left. This is called the Great Diligence Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Mudra. If one wishes to enter the battlefield, bless all weapons and equipment one thousand and eight times, carry them into battle, and one will subdue the enemy, who will naturally retreat. If one wishes to subdue all enemies, bless one's clothes with the mantra and wear them, and one will subdue them. Another method is to take pearls, agate, gold, silver, or various precious gems, bless them one hundred and eight times with the mantra, carve them into the shape of a child, and place them on a banner, or on one's body, or on a horse, and lead them into the army's front lines. The enemy, seeing them from afar, will naturally surrender. Such methods are immeasurable and countless. These two mudras should be practiced according to the teachings, with cleanliness of body and mind, and one will receive the reward of longevity, eliminate all illnesses, destroy all demons and Vinayaka (elephant-headed deity), and evil people will not be able to create obstacles. One will constantly receive the presence of all the holy beings and mantra deities, and one's wishes will be quickly fulfilled. One will constantly receive the blessings and protection of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, along with Manjushri (Bodhisattva of wisdom), accompanying and assisting one, until one quickly reaches the stage of non-retrogression.
證菩提。爾時金剛藏菩薩。偏袒右肩右膝著地合掌曲躬。向釋迦如來作如是言。善哉希有甚奇特。如是大陀羅尼法藏。今于贍部洲中廣行流通。為諸國主及小王大臣並諸人民廣說利益。世尊此陀羅尼。有何功力能作何事。若有善男子善女人。能受持讀誦書寫思惟。為他說獲何福德。唯愿如來為我宣說。

At that time, Vajragarbha Bodhisattva, baring his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms, and bowed towards Śākyamuni Tathāgata, saying: 'Excellent, rare, and most wondrous! Such a great dhāraṇī dharma-dhātu is now widely circulated in Jambudvīpa, extensively proclaiming benefits to the kings of various countries, as well as minor kings, ministers, and all people. World-Honored One, what power does this dhāraṇī have, and what can it do? If there are good men and good women who can uphold, recite, write, contemplate, and speak of it to others, what merits will they obtain? May the Tathāgata explain it to me.'
At that time, the World-Honored One told Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva: 'If there are good men and good women, as well as kings, princes, and all sentient beings, who hear this essential dhāraṇī teaching and can uphold, recite, write, and remember it, whether they do it themselves or encourage others to do it, or generate joy in doing so, or can extensively praise and extol its merits, such speakers and listeners will surely and quickly attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, and will not regress in the meantime. Wherever this dhāraṇī goes, know that Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva is there, spreading this Dharma, as well as Bodhisattvas, Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, ascetic great sages, and vidyādharas, as well as Devas, Nāgas, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, Asuras, Kiṃnaras, Mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, dwelling in the middle, constantly surrounding, praising, offering, revering, and respecting this scripture. Guhyapāda, this dhāraṇī scripture is named the Tathāgata's Dharma Treasury. If there are good men and good women who uphold, recite, write, respect, and praise it, and offer and revere it with various fragrant flowers, scented powders, incense, canopies, banners, bells, drums, conches, chimes, various subtle and wondrous sounds of singing and chanting, and excellent clothing, know that these people will obtain ten kinds of rewards in this life. What are the ten? Firstly, the country will never be invaded by enemy bandits from other countries. Secondly, there will be no disasters caused by the sun, moon, stars, twenty-eight constellations, or various evil omens. Thirdly, there will be no epidemics caused by great disasters, evil spirits, etc., in the country. Fourthly, there will be no difficulties caused by wind, fire, etc. Fifthly, they will never be subject to all enemies.'
家而得其便。六者不為諸病所逼。七者不為橫死著身。八者不為非時卒風暴雨所損。九者不為旱澇不調。十者不為虎狼蟲獸諸惡雜毒有所損害。善男子此經若所在處。及有人唸誦處。當獲如上十種果報。
爾時世尊為諸大眾重說偈言。
供養救世者 此法藏最勝 受持及讀誦 此中文殊說 彼等隨意滿 大富貴饒財 名稱遍十方 圓滿福具足 若人於此經 取一真言誦 即得不空果 吉祥諸愿滿 若有諸國王 統師欲鬥戰 書此陀羅尼 于頂上安置 一心常憶念 不為怨敵害 一切諸刀杖 亦不著其身 若入軍陣中 畫此文殊像 乘騎孔雀上 安置於旗上 或使人執行 諸賊遙望見 自然當退散 或以金銀等 造作童子像 種種妙莊嚴 置之旗旛上 將入戰陣中 三軍前引行 諸賊遙望見 應時悉退散 或悉失本心 歸款自降伏 人主人非人 諸天仙等類 夜叉及羅剎 乾闥緊那羅 布單與羯吒 鬼母及龍神 蟲狼與虎豹 師子諸象類 一切惡毒等 見之盡歸伏

憶念。乃至國王人民百官。苾芻苾芻尼烏波索迦烏波私迦並諸法師。常須憶念深生難遇。此陀羅尼法寶功德不可思議。此法與一切眾生廣行流通。從國至國乃至村坊。有人住處遞相傳受。于大眾中必須供養。恭敬尊重為他演說。及教他人展轉。令人受持讀誦。若能如是獲福無量說不可盡。乃至他國聞有國王並善人。愛樂大乘修行善事。亦須往彼勸令依法受持書寫讀誦。若擁護結界一切諸處。亦須應用此陀羅尼。若有法師受持讀誦此陀羅尼經者。常須恭敬當如敬佛無有異意。所須衣服臥具飲食湯藥。乃至四事勿令乏少悉皆充足。於法師處生大尊重珍敬之心。當興廣大不思議意。密跡主若有人聞此寶藏經。不能受持讀誦書寫為他演說。及不流傳使他人知。復不恭敬供養持此陀羅尼法師。亦不敬阿阇梨。亦不能發無上菩提之心。又復生疑不信之者。如此人輩當獲大罪。如犯四重五逆罪等無有異也。一切諸佛及諸菩薩。常當舍離難為救護。密跡主於後末世。若有善男子善女人。誹謗是經及出粗語。言此經非法非佛所說。當知是人佛法中怨。命終已后決定墮阿毗地獄。一切諸佛菩薩悉當遠離。

廣饒益有情 說此最勝法

Even the kings, people, officials, bhiksus (bhiksu, monks), bhiksunis (bhiksuni, nuns), upasakas (upasaka, male lay devotees), upasikas (upasika, female lay devotees), and all Dharma masters should constantly remember this Dharani Dharma Jewel and deeply appreciate how rare it is to encounter. The merits of this Dharani Dharma Jewel are inconceivable. This Dharma should be widely circulated to all sentient beings, from country to country, and even to villages, where people reside, and should be passed on to each other. In the assembly, it is necessary to make offerings, be respectful, and venerate, explaining it to others and teaching others to transmit it in turn, so that people receive, uphold, and recite it. If one can do this, the blessings obtained will be immeasurable and inexhaustible. Even if one hears that there are kings and virtuous people in other countries who love Mahayana Buddhism and cultivate good deeds, one should also go there to persuade them to receive, uphold, write, and recite it according to the Dharma. If it is necessary to protect and establish boundaries in all places, this Dharani must also be applied. If there are Dharma masters who receive, uphold, and recite this Dharani Sutra, they should always be respected as if they were the Buddha, without any different thoughts. Their needs for clothing, bedding, food, medicine, and all four necessities should not be lacking and should be fully provided. One should have great respect and cherish them, and generate vast and inconceivable thoughts. Vajrapani (Vajrapani, Secret Guardian), if someone hears this Treasure Trove Sutra but cannot receive, uphold, recite, write, or explain it to others, and does not circulate it to let others know, and does not respectfully make offerings to the Dharma masters who uphold this Dharani, and does not respect the acarya (acarya, teacher), and cannot generate the supreme Bodhi mind, and also doubts and does not believe, such people will incur great sins, just like committing the four grave offenses and the five rebellious acts. All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will always abandon them and find it difficult to protect them. Vajrapani, in the future degenerate age, if there are good men and good women who slander this Sutra and utter coarse words, saying that this Sutra is not the Dharma and was not spoken by the Buddha, know that such people are enemies of the Buddha Dharma, and after death, they will definitely fall into the Avici Hell, and all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will stay away from them. At that time, the Vajrapani Bodhisattva-Mahasattva (bodhisattva-mahasattva, great bodhisattva), having heard the Buddha speak this Dharani Dharma, rejoiced and danced before the Buddha, prostrated to the World Honored One, and praised the Buddha with a verse: Widely benefiting sentient beings, speaking this most supreme Dharma.
亦為利益我 亦利諸眾生 令獲大安樂 如來最勝尊 稱歎諸佛德 一切真言義 能勤修行者 希有未曾有 說法利眾生 我今當頂禮 最勝大菩薩 如教頂戴行
爾時釋迦如來。告金剛密跡主菩薩言。善哉善哉汝今已能攝諸有情作大利益。密跡主我今此法付囑文殊師利法王子手。令后末世于贍部洲廣為有情宣傳流佈。爾時文殊師利童子。即于佛前歡喜踴躍。熙怡含笑而白佛言。世尊今蒙如來於大眾中付囑於我。我當受持。世尊如來入涅槃后我于未來世。令諸眾生依教受持。廣行流佈嘗不斷絕。於是世尊說是法時。無量無邊諸眾生等。聞此法故皆得離諸憂苦。無量眾生髮阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。
爾時世尊說此經已。文殊師利菩薩及金剛密跡主菩薩。並諸天等龍神八部一切大眾。同聲讚歎未曾有也。頂禮佛足歡喜踴躍一心奉行。
佛說文殊師利法寶藏陀羅尼經

Extolling the virtues of all Buddhas, and the meaning of all true mantras, Those who can diligently practice are rare and unprecedented. Expounding the Dharma to benefit sentient beings, I now shall prostrate, To the most supreme great Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva, an enlightened being), acting in accordance with the teachings and upholding them.
At that time, Śākyamuni Tathagata (Śākyamuni, the founder of Buddhism) said to Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva (Vajrapāṇi, a Dharma protector): 'Excellent! Excellent! You are now able to gather all sentient beings, creating great benefit. Vajrapāṇi, I now entrust this Dharma to the hands of Mañjuśrī Dharma Prince (Mañjuśrī, the embodiment of wisdom), so that in the future degenerate age, he may widely propagate and disseminate it among sentient beings in Jambudvīpa (Jambudvīpa, the continent where we live).' At that time, Mañjuśrīkumāra (Mañjuśrīkumāra, the youthful form of Mañjuśrī) immediately rejoiced and leaped before the Buddha, smiling and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, now I am entrusted by the Tathagata in the midst of the great assembly, I shall uphold it. At that time, after the World Honored One finished speaking this sutra, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva (Mañjuśrī), and Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva (Vajrapāṇi), along with the Devas (Deva, gods), Nāgas (Nāga, serpent deities), the eight classes of beings, and all the great assembly, praised in unison that it was unprecedented! They prostrated at the Buddha's feet, rejoiced, leaped, and single-mindedly practiced.
The Sutra of the Dharma Treasure Dhāraṇī Spoken by the Buddha for Mañjuśrī
